I'm 6'1 at 185lbs and recently got the 5,10 HK. Was a bit in doubt about the size but especially at shoulder to head height and clean conditions it's a machine. Gets a bit challenging when it's choppy though due to the little weight. In small conditions at 2-4 ft I find it hard to catch waves although I have strong paddle power. As there was no word about the EA blackstix, do you think they would help? Got some Redz-Fins at the moment.

This is the board for you if you're an advanced/intermediate surfer but just not at a level of launching airs and continuous laybacks. Just had it in Costa Rica for four months, got so much better and I surfed everything under double overhead barrels. Allows an easy paddle, tons of speed for really impressive turns and fast out-ahead cutbacks. Huge fan

Great float, great wave catching ability, but I don’t like how it turns (doesn’t flow the way I like). I’ve tried JJF fins and Black stix f8. Haven’t hit the sweet spot in it yet.

I think I prefer boards with more moderate to extreme tail rocker boards as my custom shaped board feels better at turning than the HK.

I tried this board on a 80cm/1m wave on Adriatic sea last Sunday and..it's super super super. The board start more quickly than I never see, and on the wave face it's fast, stable and response very quickly at every back foot pressure.

The best way to get a Hypto is to custom order one. Im 6'1 185lbs from Malibu and i bought a 5'10 off the rack. The board is amazing... in good surf. It is way too stiff and drivey for smaller or weaker waves. I Try to stay around 33 liters on my boards and if i had a hypto that was 5'7 or 5'8 but 33 liters it would probably be amazing.

Great video. I am strongly considering the HK. I surf a HP longboard mostly but am wanting a shortboard for variety. At 6'1 and 185 pounds we usually have 1-4 foot weakish waves with the odd strong push only when a storm rips through. Im thinking that the 6'2 (although big) would be perfect considering it's my first shorty + our weaker waves. I competently surf logs, a high performance firewire 9'0 and a 7'4 thingy that I find rather boring as its too in-between.

Thoughts on sizing of the HK would help. Thanks :)

Great review i went to your link as well and read the stuff about the board. I'm 5'8 and 160lbs, I've been riding a 7s super fish in 6'0. But I've gotten better rides and control with my fiancé's 5'6 biscuit from al merrick. Thinking of getting a HK. We mostly surf 4ft waves in our spot in the philippines. But sometimes it gets well over head, will this board work on 10ft waves?

yo benny, watch your show down in tj cool stuff. I have a question for you , they say your supposed to order a hypto krypto 4-6 inches shorter than your height, but im a little iffy about that, im an intermediate surfer and i ride 29 liters of volume if i get a shorter board id probably get the 5'4" and thats like 26 liters of volume is there a huge difference or what should i do ?

Man really bummed on the hypto krypto, did not live up to the hype at all for me. I surf mostly fishes from Steve pendarvis and Christenson. I'm from San Diego.I'm 510 160 and surfed it at sunset cliffs, blacks, cardiff reef and swamis. I'm a life long avid surfer. I started with a 5'4 and traded it for a 5'6. 5'4 was way too small, I was getting clipped at blacks and my back foot stepped clear off the tail. The 5'4 paddled like crap, felt like I was swimming. Given my love for the fish I thought this thing would be a dream for more performance oriented waves. I found it to be a horrible groveler, and more suited for bigger hollow days....and that's because of the tail. The thruster set up makes it really slow all around, I can't make sections on it, which is why I stick with quads mainly. The tail is really pulled in too so if you do a hard bottom turn or cut back, it's going to sink and you'll lose all your speed in waves of all sizes. Really hard to connect ur turns on it. Don't surf it off the tail for that reason, in fact you watch Craig ride it his back foot is super far forward. So don't bother putting a stomp pad on it. So if u can't push off the tail doing cut backs is weird, you'll prob dig rail, the sweet spot is really hard to find. I'm tempted to try a 5,8 next and convert it to a quad to get the speed I need. Thrusters suck. Overall surprisingly the slowest board I've ever ridden in waves of all sizes. Perhaps a quad setup would unlock the hidden potential. It's an average wave catcher....and that's been my experience with all boards that are marketed as versatile all arounders, the just work mediocre at best in everything. It's like shooting the same golf club on every hole. Enough griping from me laters

update, got a sick looking grayed out 5'8 hypto krypto quad. rides a bit better but still a pos overall for surfing around san diego. Looking for a dope board, try a rusty fish quatro or a christenson monarch, they have been giving me the sensation the hypto just cant provide and work in the same range of waves.

@matt Coreia thanks for your feedback. I surf Sunset, Blacks & Wind N Sea and I am the same height and weight as you. I'm debating between this board , a 5'10" CI Sampler or customizing a CI Fred Rubble. Were you able to ride the 5'8"? If so, what are your thoughts? If not, what did you choose instead? Interested to see what you ended up with as I am in the same boat as you were 2 years ago.

Hi Benny,  love your reviews, short, sweet and to the point.

I know u get asked this all the time, but here goes man...... my weight varies between the seasons, 68- 72kgs. Im at intermediate level i guess, I can put in a few carves here and there, and I do some check stalls when barrel hunting, I mostly ride waves in the 2-6ft range, and up into the 8ft range when jbay is firing. Im amped on getting one of these HKs shaped for me here by a local shaper, due to the exchange rate mostly, and I cant find any HS HKs here to test out myself, what would you recommend? Im hung up between a 5'4 and the 5'6, epoxy or poly?..... My main concerns are with getting in early, taking the drop and finding my slot.... also do you know where i could find the the all the exact dims and measurements of the HK to give my shaper?  Much appreciated .

SHAKA!

These boards go so sick. Biggest thing I've learned is to not surf this thing too hard. The harder I try to surf the worse a time I have on it. Just get on it with the mindset you are out for a fun playful surf and you will be rewarded with one because the board does all the work for you. I've surfed this in small fat waves, big fat waves, small hollow waves and big hollow waves and it goes sick in anything. Surprisingly good barrel board! Just point and shoot and it'll do mach 10 with no effort. Not really the board for ripping on. I bought a JS blak box 2 for really throwing around but if you're in the mood for flying down the line or need extra foam for fatter slower waves then this is the go.
Peace

Hi Benny
Thanks for the review. I'm 6'0, 82 kg. I'm an average surfer from Switzerland, surfing approx. 5 weeks a year. Which one would you recommend...the Hypto 5'10 with 33.8l volume compared to the 5'8 with 32.3l? I want to ride this board in 1-5 ft beachies and catch a lot of waves but still have a board which would not be too stodgy to turn. I'm not sure if the 5'10 would be a little to fat for me?! I know, you usually recommend to have a little too much volume ;-) Cheers, André
PS. In December I will be in Sydney and check out the Northern beaches. Which ones are your favorites?

Hey, Im 5'8 And looking at boards and I weigh 63kg and intermediate skill level. Im currently surfing a billabong 6'4 fish but im finding it way to slow and chunky. Ive been told i want something like this with a wider nose for speed and around 30-35 litre board? What would you recommend based on this? I surf in New Zealand so looking for a more versatile board, Thanks in advance!!

heyyyy. i am 5'7" and 165ish pounds pretty advanced surfer. my main board is 5'6" and its roughly 26 to 27 liters of volume (regular PU construction) and i like the way it floats. i cant decide between 5'4" or 5'6" hypto krypto. im leaning towards the 5'4" just because the hypto krypto is epoxy and floats better. any suggestions? thanks

@RealCheddarPB The epoxy does add a touch of extra buoyancy but the Haydenshapes team have done a great job of making this construction feel less 'corky'. I talk about this in more detail in the full review here: http://bit.ly/HSHyptoKryptoReview

Regardless, if you're an advanced surfer, I think you're right to go with the 5'4.

Hi 123 The Status,

First, dropping down a foot is always going to be jarring - you almost have to re-learn how to surf. I encourage you to stick with whatever shorter board you choose. Persistence!

Second, the 6'2 is a bit big for your in terms of volume but, given you didn't feel comfortable on the 5'10, I don't think it's a bad option!

I hope this helps you.

Hi! I'm 1.83m (6ft) and i'm around 83kg(182pounds) and i live in Italy, i'm not a great surfer but i think this board could fit me and help me grow. i was wondering, should i get a 5'10", or a 6'00. Hi Alessandro, there isn't a huge difference between the 5'10 and 6'0 but, given your description and where you live (I understand the waves in Italy are generally quite small and weak?), go for the 6'0!

And many, many congratulations for losing 74 pounds - that is an achievement!

Im 6'0 ; 190 lbs ; was advanced at one point but everyday i am getting more and more intermediate (I probably would be on the 5'8 if I was buying a year ago). I have a hard time believing that I can't ride little boards anymore.. I am considering the 5'10 HK with all the other dimensions stock as listed on the website. Most often waves are 2-4 ft around here in malibu.. Do you think 6'0 is too big?
CompareSurfboards.com
CompareSurfboards.com - 10 years ago
Hi Max,

It happens - life and age catch up to us - but, regardless, the best surfer is the one having the most fun!

I always prefer to have a bit too much volume versus not enough but I think the decision between the 5'10 and the 6'0 will come down to the waves you intend to ride.

If you're going to surf mostly small, weak waves, the 6'0 won't hurt. If you're going to surf the Hypto Krypto as an all rounder for small to medium size waves, perhaps the 5'10 would be better, especially as an advanced to intermediate surfer.

Remember, too, that the construction of the HK will float a bit more versus a traditional PU boards.

I hope this helps you!

Cheers,
Benny

I just surfed the Maldives with HK, early season shoulder to head high with Machado fins. Great board.  One thing I have done is put a full Mat-black sticker on the top nose of the board until the HS logo. I did this because of the strong reflection from the sun off the white board.  It does help.  The maldives sun is punishingly shiny and also where I live. Normally I am surfing this and a Baked Potato.

Hi Teo, thank you for your question.  A 5'8 Hypto will work but, at your level, you can probably afford to drop down to the 5'6, especially if you buy an epoxy HK, which may feel slightly more buoyant.

Still, in my opinion, foam is your friend so I don't think the 5'8 is a bad call!

Please let me know how you go on the Hypto, it's a great board.

Cheers,

Thanks for your good feedback Robert; these are important factors. The wave type, size and period you surf are important, too, as is your fitness. I focus on volume as an equalizer; I've added a link to a volume guide on the CS site. Regardless, I'm 6' tall, intermediate and weigh 105 kg's (230 lb's). After trial & error, my volume sweet spot is ~36CL's for a good wave board, ~37-41CL's for an average wave board and 45CL's+ for tiny, weak waves. My HK is 6’2 and has 38.4CL’s of volume.

Would be good to know the size of the board as well as your height, weight, skill level... Sounds a bit cheesy but helps to put stuff in to perspective... Or add it into the description.. My 2 American cents
