This kit works great for dynamic displays when paired with either a scratch built barge or larger vessel in the pond. I'm working on an ore barge for mine using old styrene sheets I had laying about.

Was there a version of this mold released with a motorized option? I picked up an older model that share a lot of similarities with this model off of ebay as a junkyard find. It had what appeared to be a motor mount that was included in the kit. I sadly did not get the box, which is why I am unsure of it's branding.

@hpiguys Workshop was the mount included in one of the trees and I just didn't spot it?

Yup, lots of these, including this one, came with motor options to play with.

Enjoyed watching and learning from your video. I appreciate all the painting tips. I’m working on a northern trawler and realized I could assemble whole sections and then paint, but wanted to see what other modelers recommend. I’m going to switch from enamels to acrylic on my next model. The fumes (in a small apt) and cleanup aren’t that great. Thanks again...really nice model!

You did a great job on the build; I loved the fact you brush-painted it with craft paints -- something to which I switched when I lived in an apartment and didn't want to inconvenience the neighbors with enamel and paint-thinner smells. (Though the first nice day after the model was finished, it went outside for a clear-coat).
My quibble with this kit -- which is amazingly detailed and cleanly molded for its vintage -- is that I'd be cutting out one, maybe two more windows on each side of the wheelhouse; as molded, that's not nearly enough visibility. And I'd swap out the provided life rings for bigger ones; those look like they belong on a smaller-scale model.
But also -- a shoutout to model kits manufactured in my hometown!

Thanks man! It was a pleasure to build up.

Gunwale is the common usage.
Gunnel is a type of fish, or the older saying for gunwale.

Just a craft paint red, I think it was called Tuscan Red.

Love all your review and build videos !!!! I have a really old version of this kit still in the box. It is motorized. From what I see all the parts are still there for the motorized version except the motor.

Thanks John! Yes, you could still run it on battery or even RC without a huge amount of work.

Sure, a 9 gram servo or smaller would fit easily in the hull and upper cabins.

Yup it will float fine. Might want to add some sinkers glued to the bottom of the hull so it doesn't tip over.

Very Nice build, only 1 mistake. the steam whistle goes in front of the stack instead of the back. the cord would run from the whistle lip to the top of the pilot house. the whistles were used for signals to the deck crews not only of the tug but any ship crews they were assisting. Other than that it looks fine. Well done.

two things: (1) I agree with the fellow who suggests you build a pirate ship - maybe one from your earlier reviews, in the 100 scale range or so. (2) your colors and paint skills did it again. Thanks for all the tips

(Actually, regarding my comment that 'all CG tugs were 65ft', I found an old pic of a 64ftr that is actually more the style of this model with the taller stack and the round portholes, though still a somewhat different overall configuration...CG 64305...so, who knows? lol)
MHFROX
MHFROX - 6 years ago
Nice build! I got the kit from my son on Father's Day....however, regarding the kit itself, the USCG Tug 'Spindle' 67509 never existed. It's a fictitious name & hull #. (Ex-Coastie, btw) On CG vessels under 100', the first two digits in the hull # designate the length. The CG tugs were all 65 ftrs. SO, with a little doctoring on the decals, mine will be, though still fictitious, 65709. At least that part will appear more authentic...(and maybe only an ex CG guy would care!) Further, amazing the similarities between your workbench and mine. Self-healing matt, pegboard, exact same mini file set...(Hrbr Frt?) and even the lasy-susan for spinning projects. (I made mine from a boat seat swivel. Real handy, 'specially for air-brushing & glass etching.) Again, nice build! I picked up a tip or two watching. (Your bench is much tidier and more 'camera-ready'. lol)

I also am an veteran on the Coast Guard. Look up the USCG Tug "Guard" 67', and the USCG Tug "Penrose" also 67'. Tugs range anywhere from 20' to 154' throughout the history of the CG.

Any of the Lindberg sailing ships are nicely priced and build out to a good size. Try out the Jolly Roger from them. It's about 16 iches long.
Big ships cost big money and take lots of work.

I originally thought this was the same kit as the Lindberg Harbor Tug/ Diesel Tug but it is not. There are similarities but also many differences, the scale being one. The Harbor/Diesel Tug is 1/87 (HO) scale. The Coast Guard Boat and the Fire Boat are essentially the same boat with added details to make it into the Fire Boat. Both of those are listed as 1/72 scale.

My instructions call for the deck to be painted in grey but I see that you painted it green. It looks great. Did you choose green as a personal preference or because it's more historically accurate?
hpiguys Workshop
hpiguys Workshop - 6 years ago
I did green as I saw the green on civilian tugs and liked it. I'm sure grey is the 'proper' color but I loved the way the green stood out and looked on the other tugs so I broke the rules for my build.

I've built a few watercraft in the past month. What happens is, I build a few cars, people get mad and say they want ships. I build some ships or boats, people get mad and say they want cars. I build some military stuff and people say they don't like military stuff.
I can't seem to win, so I just build what I want to build and if people like it, that's cool.
If any new pirate ships come out, you can bet I'll buy it and give it a review.
Thanks for watching as always. :)
