I was so inspired by this video that I bought a pintail for my birthday today for myself. But skateboarding ain't easy. The moment I step on it, it is slippery and can move backwards and forward. And the board tilts sideways so it is hard to be stable on it.

This makes me so happy, so glad to share this timeless stoke even in 2020. You guys took one of the most unhelpful (albeit classic) board shapes and made me want to add another to my quiver of 9 all these years later. Just for the good times lol. Thanks Lindsay and Original!

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 4 years ago
Hey Stephen! That's so awesome. Age is just a number, really. What's your weight/height and what kind of riding are you looking to do? Those are the two things that will narrow down what board is good for you.

I would like to buy one, which length should I get? I’m just starting off, can Surf but want to longboard dance and cruise. I’m 156cm tall and 58,5kg Could you please let me know which size?? Does it make a difference for dancing if the front is not the same as the back? Love your video girl.

Hey original, I have a 44 inch pintail and compound 50 degree trucks with OJ super juice wheels and my board is really bad at turning but idk how loose you are able to make the trucks while still being safe can u help please
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 5 years ago
Hey! In this video our riders are actually using our S-Carving Trucks. You can check them out here: https://shop.originalskateboards.com/products/original-s8-200mm-longboard-trucks-set-of-2

Those will make your board turn much better because they are spring-loaded. If you want to, shoot us an email—customersupport@originalskateboards.com—saying you spoke with us on YouTube, and send a photo of your board, we can let you know if you the best setup so you can get that nice board lean without wheel bite.

Happy Cruising!

As with anything there is always some risk involved. But if you use protective gear and take it slow, you should be fin! Finding someone who can teach you or give you some pointers also helps.

Awesome review...

Which pintail longboard size would you recommend for beginner 5’6” 150lbs?
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 5 years ago
Hey Blake! At your weight/height, I would for sure checkout the Pintail 40. You can check it out here: https://originalskateboards.com/longboards/pintail-40-longboard/ -- we also have a size guide on that page and riders on the site that can help you if you need. Feel free to hit us back up on here as well! Thanks!

Ok since this videos old I don’t know if you’ll respond but Iv been trying to get a longboard. Iv found a good one with good reviews but it’s 44 inches and I’m 4’11 so I was wondering if it’s so big.
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 5 years ago
Hey Sam! At your height, the 44 is going to be way too big. You for sure want to pickup the Pintail 37: https://originalskateboards.com/longboards/pintail-37-longboard/ -- we also have a size guide on that post and of course feel free to hit us back up on here or on our rider chat (on the site). Let us know what you end up picking up!

Ash
Ash - 5 years ago
@Original Skateboards Yeah I definitely should have gotten some padding before going out, I had my first downhill accident a few days ago and left a lot of my body bruised and cut up haha. Thanks for the advice!
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 5 years ago
Ah! Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you'll be better soon. Definitely a good idea to have some protective gear in the beginning. It'll make you feel more confident in your riding.
Ash
Ash - 5 years ago
Original Skateboards Yup! I ended up getting a 43inch pintail, it’s great for cruising and carving. Recently I hurt my ankle in an accident with the board so I haven’t been able to use it sadly haha.
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 5 years ago
Hey Ash! Thankfully we see your comment :) Did you end up buying a board? At 5'5" a 39" board is fine. You also want to make sure that you get a board that fits your ride style. Let us know if you still need any help! Thanks again!

I'm a 13 year old girl, 115 lbs and 5 3 and I'm looking to get into some type of skateboarding. cruising sounds good for me but I'm not sure if I'd like to try tricks in the future, I would also eventually like to try and bomb hills since I live in New England where there's all types of terrain to skate. if I get an average skateboard then I would only be able to go to parks because the roads are pretty crappy. there are a lot of community things I like to go to so I think it would be fun to carve in and out of crowds. So I think I should get some sort of cruiser. probably not a penny because that's too small but I also do not definitely want a giant board, since it would be heavier and I couldn't really carry it comfortably anywhere. any boards you guys have in mind or any advice?

Ordered a pintail 46 two and a half weeks ago. Had it send 3to5 day shipping and it showed up in 8 days and without the hardware to put it together. I called and let them know and they said they would ship them to me right away. 6 days later and I don't have enough screws to put my board together... Sooo bummed. Will never order from these guys again. At least not without having them put it together first...

You don't want a pintail for for downhill. I have the east side relic deck, -44 reverse kingpin trucks, 70mm Orangatang 4president wheels (80a), bones reds

Multicolored shoelace - 8 years ago
i like my pintails to have a bit more curve in the board, it strengthens the wood and it doesn't mess with your average ride on any other longboard. For example my favorite would have to be the "Outer Limits" by Stella longboards.

Hey, guys...
I'm 1,75 and 58 kg.
I got a 40" Pintail and I really love it. But it is the best size for me?
Also, the wheels are Kryptonics Route 62. Are they ok for slide? I don't know how to slide yet, and seems difficult to do that with this kind of wheels... But I might be wrong.
I have the impression that the best wheels for sliding is orangotang.

What you guys can say about it?
Thanks and sorry for my english.

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
At your weight/height, if you were to go with the Pintail, the 40 would be the right size. If you're looking to cruise more than hitting hills (and depending on how steep your hills are), I'd say go with the Pintail 40. If you're looking to getting into different ride styles, like progressing into Freeride, the Drop Freeride has the edge over the Pintail. I started out on a Pintail, tackling smaller hills, so it is a great beginner option (the spring loaded trucks allow you to master carving). Have you checked out the Arbiter KT? That's another great option.

At your weight/height, picking up the Pintail 43 is going to be your best option - it's going to give you you the perfect cruiser/carver feeling. Picking the right board is about your weight/height and how you want to ride. You can checkout more photos and videos of the board on our website. The Pintail complete comes with the trucks; they are spring loaded, which is why you see everyone in the video cruising and carving with ease. The trucks will be based on your weight/height and what deck you choose, but the setup options are on the website. What's your weight/height? What kind of riding are you looking to get into?

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
What kind of riding are you into? What's your weight/height? The Original Pintail comes with spring loaded S Trucks, which you won't find on other boards, like the Santa Cruz. They give you the ability to turn super easily and tightly. I'd suggest taking a peak at those for sure. We may be a bit bias, but the Original Pintail is definitely my go-to for cruising/carving.

It depends -- what kind of riding are you thinking about getting into? At your weight/height, the Pintail 40 is a good beginner board. It'll give you a nice tight turn (thanks to the spring loaded trucks), which is a great place to start learning to carve. Alternately, if you're looking to move into different ride styles, an Arbiter KT is another great option setup at the shortest wheelbase you'll be able to learn to cruise/carve, but also get into fast freeride, etc.

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
Thanks for the love - the trucks are spring loaded, so that you have quick turn ability, but also the ability to learn how to carve (which is great for beginners). You can also setup your board with different trucks, so there are options for sure. It's all about riders personal preference. None of this stuff is a one size fits all deal.

Stoked for you to start getting into longboarding. What's your weight/height? The Pintail is great for cruising/carving and learning, BUT if you're thinking you want to progress into other ride styles, the Arbiter DK or KT are a better option. I have my KT setup at the smallest wheelbase, so I have a nice turning radius, but the ability to do fast freeride.

Welllllll I'd love to see you getting an Original Pintail 40 instead but those are two different boards. Sector makes solid decks and the Goddess is a classic board for, a lot of guys used to chop it since its pretty hill oriented at its core. How well / good it is for you sort of depends on the type of riding you want to do.

It also depends on your height and weight, and on your budget.

How big in size can I go in wheels for the 37? I'm just looking for a good cruising wheel.
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
Usually I wont ride anything bigger than a 70mm on a cruiser, those will work fine on the Pintail 37 w/ S8 200mms, and the trucks make the deck super low and easy to push (way lower than the pintail alternatives out there, more like a drop-through in height). The reason for the personal 70mm size limit for me is all about weight. Once you go bigger than 70mm it really starts to add a lot to the weight of the setup. For a cruiser you want to be able to kick it up and carry it around easily.

I woudl go Pintail 46 for sure. That's awesome that you are getting into it and I'm super stoked you found your way here. We build the Pintail 46 specifically for bigger guys, or guys who like a bigger board, looking to cruise / learn. Definately get the S10 250mm trucks, they will keep the setup super low and easy to push, for you at 6'8 there is no reason not to match up with a bigger deck / truck setup. Stoked.

Sounds like Pintail 37 / Pintail 40 to me: http://originalskateboards.com/longboards That's assuming you are going to be doing mostly small hills and flatland cruising / carving. If so either one of those boards with S8 200mm trucks would be absoltuely killer at your height / weight. If you wanted to do more slide oriented stuff something like the Drop Freeride 41 or Freeride 41 RockerConcave would be great. You should be able to get in under budget with any of those decks.

I am 6'3 220lbs, what board would you recommend?
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
For cruising and carving at 220lbs I would go with either the Pintail 43 or the Pintail 46.
Either of those is going to be dialed for a bigger rider so its really about whether you think you want a slightly bigger deck (go Pintail 46) or a slightly smaller with the Pintail 43. Those boards are going to carve like crazy, there isnt anything better for flatland / small hills.

For a bigger dude getting into bigger hills, check out the Drop Freeride 44. Great to learn to slide / bomb.

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
Something like the Pintail 37 is going to be a good option to get started on as a super small rider.
It can be set super loose which is the main thing that makes most longboards not so good for really small riders since most of the time they are too stiff to be able to turn until you weigh more. The Pintail 37 will be a true longboard for a tiny rider, but you will also be able to turn it, and thats sort of the name of the game to get started and have fun.

Depends on the quality and condition of the board but if you take care of it, it would probably last for a good 4 or 5 years. You should probably clean the bearings once you get it though.

100% Pintail 37 w/ S8 200mm trucks MW.
As a smaller rider you are EXACTLY the person that board / truck combo was designed for. A lot of times smaller riders have a really hard time turning a longboard. Thats one of the main reasons people dont stick with it / keep at it. The Pintail 37, and the whole series really, is designed to be super easy to turn to eliminate that issue. Another great option would be the Derringer 28. Same sort of deal, just packed into a smaller 28 inch board.

Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
I'm thinking you might be better off on the Drop Freeride 41.
You are almost the exact same size as I am and I feel like the Drop Freeride 44 is just too much board for me. Particularly for cruising etc where you may be picking your deck up and carrying it around a lot. The Drop Freeride 41 is going to be a lot lighter for that sort of stuff. Other than that I think its a great match. I learned a lot of my first serious slides on that deck.

What wheelbase option do you recommend for mid-highspeed free ride on this board
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
Not sure this is posted on the right video as the Pintail 37, Pitnail 40 etc only have one wheelbase since they are setup for cruiser / carving and each deck is based off of an ideal rider height / weight (ie. we match the board to the rider size as opposed to changing wheelbase etc).

With our decks that do have multiple wheelbases (Arbiter KT, Baffle 37) you really have two strategies. I usually forego some stability and push my WB as small as it will go to increase initiation / rotation.

If you want to do some cruising and carving like we are doing in this video then the Original Pintail 43 with S8 200mm trucks or the Pintail 46 with S10 250mm trucks would be awesome for small hills and flats. Hey Teresa, are you sure you have an Original Pintail?
If so, do your trucks have springs inside of them?

Basically Original Pintails with Original trucks are easier to turn than just about any other board out there (I have yet to find one). We designed them with flatland / small hills and tuned the shorter versions with small riders in mind. Give me some info on your setup and we can help get your deck tuned to work the way it should, probably a truck adjustment issue.

Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
Hey Selina, the Pintail 43 would for sure work for you if you don't mind a longer deck.
The really cool thing about Original Pintails that makes them different from any other pintail is our patented carving trucks. Those trucks, when combined with the right board design, make turning a big board super easy... even for a lighter / smaller rider like yourself. So while the Pintail 43 is a longer / bigger board, you could absolutely rock it. A Pintail 37 might be more your size easier to carry.

Any truck will fit, the Original Trucks were just designed as a carving / flatland specific goal hence the recommendation. If it were me I would beg borrow and steal to get an S8 truck (or heck even order online), it makes that much difference for flatland. Any truck will fit, but the difference in performance / rideability on flat is huge.

Hey Vegan,
The trucks sort of make the flatland / small hill cruising carving performance happen.
But yes, you can for sure use different trucks, its just a different deal (better for faster speed and bigger hills for sure).

Just got a Pintail 40 from you guys what setup should I go I got sector 9 race formula wheels and going to get some bones and now just wondering what trucks should I use.?
What are the default trucks on these?

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
Good question, what kind of riding do you want to do V?
The Pintail 40 is rediculously awesome for carving on flatland / small hills with a set of S8 200mm trucks (those are standard), but for more serious hills (or if you think you might want to straight up bomb a few) you might want to go with Calibers 50s or Paris v2s. As far as wheels, I like Volante Checkers as an upgrade, I believe Radius SataRides come standard which work well as a beginner and slide well if you know what you are doing.

What pintail do you think i can buy?
I never do longboard so it's for start but i'll be with it to much
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
Stoked you are getting started MB.
Original Pintails are SUPER good for lighter riders learning since they were built to focus specifically on making turning / carving as easy as possible on flats and small hills. Thats a totally different perspective than the other Pintails out there. I would look at either the Pintail 37 with S8 200mm trucks or the Pintail 40 with S8s. If you want a ligher board thats easier to carry go Pintail 37, or PIntail 40 for more room to move around.

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
Sounds like Pintail 40 territory to me Sierra.
A lot of times lighter riders have a really hard time turning boards since most trucks are made for bigger riders and bigger hills. That's sort of where the Original Pintail series is different. The Pintail 40 with S8s was designed specifically for easy turning while carving smaller hills and flats. If you want to bomb straight down a hill, not a good fit, if you want to carve down a hill ala snowboarding, fits your size perfectly.

floor swimming board -- I am wanting to use a board for basic exercises like floor swimming (lying down on the board, and paddling with my hands from room-to-room), and floor sledding (sitting on the board and pushing off with my hands), so I need a board at least 38 inches long, and a wide board, at least 9.5 inches. Do you have any boards like this? I am concerned that the longer boards might cause me navigation problems going through the kitchen into the living room.
Right now I am starting out with an Amazon-damaged-discounted Krown Green Flame 43" flat pintail that seems almost right, but .... I am prbably going to get 97 mm wheels to help me roll over the carpet pile better ... like using fat bike tires on snow.
..... Please recommend a board. Have you ever heard of anybody else doing this?
oh, I am an "old as dirt" newbie who has been mostly into bicycling (every week, even in NH winters), ice skating, skiing, and wind-surfing, oh, and swimming.

The Pintail series are great boards for smaller hill riding, cruising, and carving. We offer different tension springs you can put inside your trucks to make them more or less responsive depending on your preference. The Pintails come in 4 different lengths depending on your own height and weight. -Lindsay

You into carving / cruising Kay?
That's sort of what our Pintail's were designed for. Well. Not sort of. That's pretty much it haha
Basically how we set them up is great for that stuff, a Pintail 37 or Pintail 40 with S8 200mm trucks would be great for you at 5'0. If you think you are going to get more seriously into downhill / sliding / speed stuff, there are better options... like say a Drop Freeride 41 or an Arbiter KT, but for learning / carving / cruising. I'd look at the Pintail 37

Which size do you recommend?
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
Hi Patrick! For your height and weight the Pintail 40 would be a perfect fit. You can stick with the standard black springs if you want your trucks to be more responsive for carving. If you think you want a more stable board or you're looking to ride down some hills you can get the red medium tension springs for a bit more resistance. -Lindsay

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
Pintail 37 sounds like a great fit for you Morgan. Super easy to turn and thats really the first thing you want to learn. That's what makes the pintails we make, like the Pintail 37 so special. We load that board with S8 200mm trucks and that changes everything vs the average pintail you see, at least as far as ease of turning is concerned. Pintail 37 with S8s fits you perfect as far as Height / Weight is concerned.

Thanks for the quick response, the board will be basically used for mainly flat with the odd slight downhill but not racing it like a mad man just for commuting so id like a pintail with what ever trucks you suggest for this purpose and board length.
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
Yeah man sounds like a good pick on that Pintail.

How tall and how heavy are you?
Maybe we can help get a lenght / truck size picked out that matches you as a rider.
For mainly flats I love getting people started on Original S8s or S10s, but that also sort of depends on whether you have previous Skate, Surf or Snowboard experience. If surf or snowboard, go Original trucks fo sho, if you skate street, I would lean more toward an RKP truck. It will feel more familiar for you for sure.
deandigger
deandigger - 9 years ago
Me again, is the pintail the best board for me doing general weekend straight runs nothing fancy no trying tricks or would you recommend another original board, plus im after a complete board
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
Are you talking about bombing in a straight line down a hill?
Are you going to be doing more small hills and flats or more big hills / mountains?

Assuming you want to carve / do S turns like you would surfing / snowboarding then a Pintail 40 with S8 trucks would be awesome. That's pretty much exactly what it's made for. If you are thinking you might like to bomb a few hills (straight line down, as fast as possible) something more like the Arbiter KT or Drop Freeride 41 would be better.

Hi, im really interested in one of these boards i havent skated for years and ive been looking at a longboard also as ive knackered my leg and cant walk long distances so thought this would be a good way to get about. Im 5,10" 198lb so havent a clue about what length board or anything and most of my boarding will be flat not downhill. Ps do you send out to the uk?
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 9 years ago
Great way to get out for sure, as someone who has rehabbed knees a couple of times, ease into pushing long distances since that works your legs / knees pretty good in itself.

For flats the Original Pintails are awesome, they are standard with Original S8 trucks which were made for flatland / small hill carving. 5'10 x 198lbs is Pintail 43 or Pintail 46 territory for sure. Feel like you want a longer longboard, go Pintail 46. Want a little less to carry? Pintail 43.
We do ship to the UK!

as long as you choose Original Trucks all of them come with a spring, you can choose another spring option to be added and included as another option (additional tension means a different ride) but Original Trucks always load with springs. That's a great thing if you are looking a Pintail 40 or something like that, or even an Apex, when you dont have a lot of hills. Smallhills or flats + Original trucks = a great time, way easier learning when you can turn your board haha

Had to laugh when I saw the guy riding 3 decks one on top of 'tother...I was doin' this at 12 in 1973...I'm 54 now. Also had this radical gold anodized aluminum deck with a small yet very functional kicktail front and rear...I drilled truckmount holes as far fore and aft as I could and ended up (unbeknownst to me or anyone at the time ) with a dropdeck longboard 30 years before dropdecks or longboards were even made. Looking back I can only smile and laugh...I really had NO IDEA what I had made...I just thought it looked cool and rode fast and stable...but still...WOW...30 plus years ahead of the curve.

There are other companies than this one. Why get a pintail? They are to big to carry on the plane. Why not get a omen board bustin board landyachtz board gravity board arbor boards. There are other options and better boards once u progress. Why waste money on 1 specific board that does 1 specific thing. Get a board that is all around. A gravity miura is THE exact price as this and it does everything u want to do. It has a kicktail which is a totally new level of longboarding.

@Wessel Rood It's hard to tell from that page. It will probably work, but only with the S8 or S10 truck. I would love to start carving. I'd be new to it so I wouldn't be a pro. I'm leaning towards a 37. I don't have a wide stance and I would want more flexibility. I feel more comfortable with it being Flexy rather than stiff.

@Sailor Moon Gotcha - after seeing that you want to cruise and also do a bit of street, I'd suggest checking out the Arbiter KT or the Arbiter DK over the Pintail series. Both of these boards have more setup options than the drop carve 37, so you'll be able to transition from cruising to street with one deck. Have you checked either of those decks out? +Dee DG try penny board series. It's a great cruising board. Though they can still tackle steep hills. But not like twin tip boards.
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Andrew Bernal a Penny may be easy to carry around but that's where the advantage stops, particularly where hills are concerned.
Penny boards can turn tight, which is good, but they get that tight turn using a SUPER short wheelbase and super short trucks. That combination actually makes it harder to execute the amount of leverage necessary to nail a lot of really important slides, or even really hard carves.

A bigger board, built for hills, is going to be a huge advantage. Yes they are more expensive, but there is a reason people go with a more serious board for this stuff, it makes a difference!

I'm 5'4 and have no idea how much I weight but I'm pretty average for my height. I've been eyeing the Pintail 40 for awhile now and I'm considering asking for it on Christmas. I'm more into cruising and just riding around, so is this a good board for me?
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Dee DG Sounds like a good fit to me dee, that is Pintail 40 territory all the way. My lady friend is a little taller than you and started on the Pintail 37, and loved it. I think you have the option to drop down to the 37 instead but the Pintail 40 will give you more stance room. The main thing as a smaller rider, assuming you aren't going to be doing serious downhill stuff, is to look at trucks that are easy to turn. Original S8s or Paris would be good options. Stoked you are getting into it!

@David Zahnle without knowing your height, I think I would I'd go Original Pintail 46 all the way David.
For bigger dudes it's always nice to have some extra platform. A good friend of mine (big guy, owns an MMA dojo) just jumped on a Pintail 43 and loves it to death. Long with a big platform but still turns on a dime with the S8 trucks he has on there. Same can be said for the Pintail 46. Either would be a great option for you, go Pintail 46 if you like a bigger deck, or Pintail 43 to shave off a bit.

My lady friend is just about your size and she really had a great time learning on the Original Pintail 37. It's super easy to turn and that is really the number one thing you need to learn to have fun on a longboard. If you can't turn, you can't go around a corner on a sidewalk, or think fast to avoid a pothole etc. Turning is GOOOD. Another great option would be the Pintail 40, which is longer, while the Pintail 37 is shorter / lighter. Either would be a great fit

@Sibelle Stramaglia We do! Shipping costs $60USD and takes 3 to 5 business days via UPS express (its seriously fast).
The only thing to remember is that because we are not a part of the european union we are not allowed to collect VAT tax with your order, that means this will be collected by the EU once it arrives in Germany. Should be about 20% of your total. Normally this is just a part of the price you pay for items in the EU, but we are not allowed to collect it externally. Hope that helps!

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Joe Ridriguez you can totally setup a Pintail to do Downhill too.
The one thing to keep in mind is that riding down a hill is different than what people talk about as Downhill.
If you look at the riding we are doing on the Pintail 40 etc, that's more like riding down a hill or carving down a hill.
Downhill would be more like this: Original Skateboards Vecter 37 in Iceland with Aleix Gallimo

Really serious about Downhill, and want to carve? Go Arbiter KT.
How tall / heavy are you?
CityOfHowls
CityOfHowls - 10 years ago
I heard pintails get wheel bite and speed wobbles easily at high speeds. Is this true? I really wanna get one though.
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@cityofhowls not at all. Both wheelbite and speed wobbles aren't from any one TYPE of board but rather they are determined by the setup that is underneath that board, and the rider who is riding.

The Orignal Pintail40 / Pintail 37 decks we are riding, that Lindsay is talking about, are made for carving, cruising and learning.
Because a loose truck is easier to turn, and slide, that's how we set them up. You could put a set of DH trucks on there and it would be stable, but harder to turn and learn.

My lady friend is almost exactly your size (plus 1 inch) and she learned on / loved the hell out of her Pintail 37 w/ S8s. Actually thats the deck she learned to slide on before moving to an Apex and then adding an Arbiter KT to the mix for more downhill sliding aspects. Now she keeps up with me on most hills, it's a total blast. Hope you get into it just as much. Let us know if we can help.

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@i SHNIPEPEW depends on the type of riding you are going to be doing. If you are liking the look of the Original Pintails and the type of riding we are doing in this vid then I would really focus on two decks, the Original Pintail 40 (flexible) and the Pintial 43 (stiffer). Those two are perfect for your height / weight and will be absolutely epic carvers with great carving / slide initiation. If you want to do more sliding than that, I would check the Arbiter KT which is my fav personally.

YouPooped YourTube
YouPooped YourTube - 10 years ago
You can slide with any board/wheels. Some may be harder, like sector 9 steamrollers. It's not the board/wheels/trucks, it's you. Unless you have sidewinder trucks, which is extremely hard to slide on. Looser trucks means harder slides to initiate. Tighter trucks help a lot but is harder to turn, obviously. Loose trucks can help you in turns but i would say look at some more videos on sliding and how to slide, then tighten your trucks and try that way. That's how i learned, but at the moment i can only do toesides. I found out that actually committing and swinging your arms around when trying to slide, it helps a lot. Also moving your head around your shoulders the way your sliding helps.
Medo M.A.D
Medo M.A.D - 10 years ago
Well  idk its a bamboo board with loose trucks for carving and cruising... but i put flashbacks on for a lil easier sliding but i cant seem to get it??
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Mann Monkeyy tough to say without knowing the brand / board personally. It probably has to do with your setup.
Most of the stuff you see in this video is setup for super easy initiation of turns, which also translates to super easy initiation of slides (though that comes at the cost of downhill stability at high speed). We figure, if you are learning something new, and you might fall, you might as well learn it going a manageable speed.
Give me some more info on your setup I'll try to help.

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Cj Garza Doesn't sound like a bad match at all to me. You absolutely had the option to go with either the Pintail 40 or Pintail 37, but I wouldn't say that your height puts you definitively in either board. They both have advantages, the Pintail 37 will be lighter and easier to carry around, and that's a great thing for a lot of riders. You should have plenty of room for your stance even though the Pintail 40 would have more. I say get out there and ride, you are on a good board for you : )

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Brainfart sounds like a good fit if you want a longer stiffer deck. I am almost exactly your weight, and just a touch taller and I personally like the Pintail 40 a little bit better just because of I like a little flex. If you like flex, or don't have that many hills, I would lean toward the Pintail 40 to keep it a little bit more flowy. The Pintail 43 will be stiffer with a wider wheelbase which adds a bit to stability, so that certainly isn't a bad option either.

Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Nick DApolito sounds like a good match Nick. You could also look at the Pintail 37 to shed a little bit of weight (since it is shorter and narrower than the Pintail 40).
That being the case you certainly would do well on the Pintail 40, and it would give you some room to grow into it if you think that's important. If I had to choose for you right now I think I would lean toward the Pintail 37 to make it easier to carry around since you are a smaller rider!

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@tyler gonzalez stoked to hear you are getting into it. You have some options.
If you really do want to pursue pure cruising and carving, I would take a look at the Pintail 46. It's a bigger board for bigger guys, if you are on a flatter area with fewer hills I would think about sticking with the S10 trucks, maybe a set of white springs to tension them up. BUT coming from a skate background you could also easily go with Paris V2s or Calibers. Another option would be the Arbiter KT, more skate, less carve.

@Longboards by Original Skateboards  thnx for the sick advice, do the the blacks come standard without upgrading them?
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
the thing is that you trade one for the other.  As a lighter rider you are more in danger of not being able to turn than you are of getting wobbly.  The other thing to remember is that the biggest part of stability is rider skill / muscle strength.  Of course you don't want to be doing any racing or any real speed stuff on S8 trucks, but you aren't going to be doing that stuff for quite a while if you are just getting started. Between now and then it will help you improve much faster to be able to turn (and have to balance, so you can work to improve) than to be on a deck that only goes straight and is perfectly stable.  Maybe get a set of red springs incase you want to stiffen things up, but my guess from your weight is that standard black will be the way to go.

sounds to me like you are looking to carve down hills rather than do some of the more serious speed stuff (over 30 or 40 mph).  If that's the case then it sounds like a Pintail 40 or Pintail 43 would be a great fit.  If you want to add some stability, you could take a look at a set of Calibers, I have them on my Arbiter KT and love the heck out of it.  That said if you really are serious about the faster stuff, being focsed sliding etc, check out the Arbiter KT.  Still solid caving performance (though I say the Pintails are tops there) but absolutely amazing once you get into the faster game.

@Alex Engin yeah Alex, getting started is one of the most fun times in riding. Good to hear you are getting into it man!
Sounds to me like Original Pintail 40 or Pintail 37 territory. Given the fact that it sounds like you are looking to do more of the laid back style stuff I think maybe going with the Pintail 40 wouldn't be a bad thing. More space on the board, still turns great, but totally chill. I'd also go S8 trucks fo sho.
Would be stoked to see what you think of that deck!

sounds like you are in the right place to me haha
An Original Pintail 40 sounds like a great way to go, at 150ish lbs / 70 kilos you are going to flex it a bit but nothing too crazy.  Just enough to keep it smooth and flowy.   I don't think I would go for one of the longer decks unless you really like a BIGGER board.  You could go smaller with the Pintail 37 if you wanted to but if you ask me, the 40 is the way to go.

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Gabriel Bozeman ehhhh... check decks get you cheap quality.
The thing to remember is that the deck is a big part of the performance / ride but the trucks, wheels and bearings are also a huge key.  Quest is pumping decks out of china and not really as focused on that stuff as a lot of the brands who sponsor teams and events, since if once you get into that stuff your team is going to seriously throw a fit if you aren't producing stuff that works when they need it most.  Teams aren't just about promoting the brand, they are a fail safe to make sure we are on the right track with the stuff we are building.  Quest isn't doing any of that stuff which is an issue for me personally and a larger issue for the whole skate industry in general.

I am 5'11 x 170lbs and the Pintail 40 is the only way to fly as far as my size is concerned. If I was heavier I might look at the Pintail 43, but for you, go with the 40 for sure.

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Giles Fin I would for sure keep it focused on the Original Pintail 37 or Pintail 40.
The main problem that you will have as a smaller rider is being able to get enough weight behind you to turn, or even more so to slide, your board. Many times it's hard to initiate a carve or slide for very light riders on an RKP truck, particularly if you don't have big hills. Most of the time when I am teaching smaller riders I will go with a Pintail 37 or 40 and then Original S8 trucks for that reason.

@Longboards by Original Skateboards I'll try the board I actually bought just now is a sector 9 Bert
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Sam Mascorro right on Sam.
The sidewinder trucks are SUPER higher but you could absolutely rock them on an Arbiter KT.
You could also think about running them drop-through on a Freeride 41 or something line that.  They are a really specific truck that functions "sort of" like an Original S8 truck, but the height really changes things in comparison to a traditional RKP truck like you might put on the Arbiter KT normally.  I think it's still an option but pretty much anything with a sidewinder truck is going to be all about carving and complicated to DH / slide with.
Sam Mascorro
Sam Mascorro - 10 years ago
@Longboards by Original Skateboards they are sidewinder
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Sam Mascorro Right on, if you have trucks I might lean more toward something like the Arbiter KT since thats probably going to give you more of a carve with traditional trucks since you can reduce the wheelbase to increase your turning capacity.  The Pintails you see in this vid turn super tight because of the trucks, but like most longer wheelbase decks out there wouldn't be the same without them.

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Sam Mascorro whenever I am teaching a small rider I always push them towards an Original Pintail 37 or Pintail 40, those two boards are just so easy to turn that it makes learning the most important pieces much more simple: how to turn, which also helps you slow down... AND teaches you the basics to slide initiation. Those things can be tough if you are smaller, hence the recommendation. I would rock the S8 trucks as a combo for sure. Hope that helps!

Is the pintail 40 wide enough to dance on?
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Jada F. depends how tall / heavy you are! Probably!
The main thing with dancing is to understand that a truck that doesn't turn as easily makes dancing tricks easier. Harder to carve = easier to dance.
That said, the main thing to remember is that an RKP truck like a Caliber or even a Paris V2 will be better for dancing than an Original truck... or rather, it will be EASIER (not better, since you also lose some slower speed maneuverability which changes things)

Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@chao muziez the main thing that really makes a difference when you are starting out is being able to turn easily.
That's one thing a Penny Board does right. That being said, Penny Boards are also super super small and that small platform makes it harder to stay balanced or to really throw any weight behind your turns / slides (which is key to moving forward).

I would LOVE the Pintail 37 for you with a set of S8 trucks.
You will turn easily and if you liked a Penny, I think you will love it.

um Hi I'm new to longboarding and am looking for a board that can handle rough terrain and can go off curbs with ease. Would you recommend these boards or something with more of a kick tail like the apex 40.kinda low on $ so pintails fit my budget better. Thanks :)
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Jacob Mabry I'm thinking Arbiter KT all the way. It has a lot of the positives that come with the Apex 40 (kicktail, ease slide-ability etc) but its a lot less expensive. Where the Apex out does the KT is really in re-inforcement of the construction, the Apex is damn near bullet proof. That isn't to say the Arbiter KT isn't durable as all hell, it's just to say that the Apex is a beast vs abuse when compared to any maple deck. The KT is a better option if you are on a tight budget.
Melatonin and Caffeine

I just got my first board, and I went with a pintail longboard from "Arbor Skateboards" based on the fact that I liked the art on it.
It is made of bamboo, but I don't know any specs of it, and the trucks I picked made it higher off the ground. Was this a bad choice, I honestly know nothing about skateboarding.
When I try going down hills, I start to wobble, and it can get quite a bit terrifying.
I know I shouldn't bother you with another companies boards, but i want to learn to longboard, and I feel like I made some bad choices and got off to a bad start.
I also want to learn how to dance, so I started with the "cross step" but I can't seem to do that "carving" thing while dancing. Do you need to carve to be able to dance?

Sorry to overload a post like this, I'm just really curious.
Nice choice in spokesperson for this video, she killed it!

Getting in practice for dancing is much harder because in the past two weeks I have moved from the United States to Germany, and all the sidewalks and whatnot are made from brick.
I‘ve also taking some gnarly falls in front of girls, really kills that self esteem.
Best of wishes and smooth cruising!
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Valdemir nah man not a bad choice, the thing to remember is that riding fast is hard haha
It takes practice and there is a HUGE risk factor if you ride outside of your means and end up eating it.
Same thing is true for carving while dancing, it might look effortless but a lot of the guys you see doing it are ridiculously talented.
You gotta step it back and make sure you start at the beginning. If you feel wobbly, you are going too fast, back off, go slower and get comfortable.
Keep at it!

Get 2 boards for 2 different purposes. Any board would be great for cruising, Check out one of OG's Pintails or some Loaded Flexy Boards. For trucks i would say Paris, Caliber, Randal, Gullwings... I would lean more on the Paris trucks.

@Ethan Thompson for sure so long as you are getting on a board thats the right size for your height and weight, and matches the type of riding you want to do.

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Patricio Becerril I think I would really take a look at the Pintail 37.
Its a smaller board for smaller riders but it is one of my favorites for teaching first timers.
SUPER easy to turn and turning is the one thing you need to know how to do since it controls your direction, but also is an easy way to slow down / control your speed.
Good slide initiation at low speed too which never hurts, but the focus of the Pintails is really cruising / carving / having fun. See what you think!

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@CountKi Jr yeah man, I would start off looking at the Pintail 37 or Pintail 40 with a set of S8 trucks.
One of the huge problems I see when I am teaching beginners is that most decks are actually really hard to turn. Well. Not really hard, but require a lot of commitment.
Since beginners are just getting the hang of balancing flat, let along committing and balancing during a hard carve, a board that turns easily is a great thing. Hence the Pintail 37 / Pintail 40 which would match perfect I think.

Jack
Jack - 10 years ago
Okay thanks! Will check them out.
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Jacko I would take a look at two, the Pintail 37 and the Pintail 40.
I personally start most people who are learning off on the Pintail 40 just because it gives them a little bit more platform.
That said I started my lady friend off on the Pintail 37 a year or so ago and she loved it at 5'7''. If you like a smaller lighter deck, go with the Pintail 37, if you want some extra room for your stance, the Pintail 40 is absolutely not too big for you.

readersea - 10 years ago
I am a beginner and am wondering if I should get the pintail 37 or pintail 40? I am 5"6 and 115 lbs
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@readersea Ahh, tough call! You could go either way.
The Pintails are awesome for beginners because they are so easy to turn, even as a beginner at lower speeds.
Since learning to turn is your first, and last, line of defense that is a really great thing.

For your height and weight you are right in the sweet spot for either of those boards.
The Pintail 37 is going to be lighter / easier to carry (and plenty big for you) or if you like a bigger deck you could easily start on the Pintail 40.
Stoked!

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Brian Lively the thing is that any complete board thats coming in under $150 is most likely going to be coming in FROM China.
All this stuff is made right here in North America and uses veneers that we actually pick out ourselves. Plus unlike the cheaper decks out there, we actually support our riders when they have a probem, not to mention anyone and everyone who has a question. Whether you go with an Original longboard or not, you get what you pay for as far as a cheaper sub $150 complete is concerned.

@Tristan Jhaye just caught this reply now... stupid YouTube comment system...
ANNNNYWAY I think i would lean to the Pintail 40 if you are going to grow (though the Pintail 37 is still totally rideable for me at 5'11 x 175lbs).  That should give you some extra space and still be easy enough to turn to have a ton of fun NOW and in the future.

@Tristan Jhaye how tall / heavy are you? Rider size is really the key to choosing an Original Pintail that works best for you.
We ship to Canada every day, cost is $30USD flatrate. Only thing to keep in mind is that you will be charged sales tax when the board arrives so thats a few percent extra.

I was wondering if the Freeride 41 (wconcave) can handle cracks, pebbles, and maybe even some sand. Do you think that board is good for cruising on flats and some downhill? O! and i love the artwork of the elk on the board!
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@WaterWorldPlanet yep for sure. Most of the time I run wheels in the 70mm size which are plenty large enough to kick pebbles out of the way. Super fine sand can be a problem in your bearings but in general you aren't going to have a problem even in a beachy area... so long as you arent trying to ride on the actual beach. I'd check out some Paris V2 trucks and a soft set of bushings which will keep it fun on flats then maybe swap bushings or tighten up for steeper more DH oriented stuff.

@Alexander Sentell sounds like a good fit on the Pintail 40 to me.
As a lighter / smaller rider you will really have a lot of fun on that deck over top of a lot of the other options out there since the S8 trucks keep it super low (easy to push) and really easy to turn.  Turning is a really key issue on the Pintails vs a lot of other decks out there and ends up being one of their biggest advantages.  Hope your stoked on it!

@Tom Krajna ow tall and how heavy are you? A board REALLY needs to match the rider as far as height and weight.
If you are 6'8 a big board (for your) is going to be a LOT bigger than a big board for me at 5'11. It's all relative so hit us back and we will help narrow it down.

Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@Zynky T I would for sure focus on the Pintail 43 and Pintail 46.
We build both of those in 9 Ply which will be plenty strong enough at 220. Actually a good friend of mine just got back into riding after not skating for 20 years or so, he is a touch shorter than you but in the 220 range also. He loved the Pintail 46, I think that's what I would go with if I was a little more ripped (only 175lb here) than I am now haha

im still sorta new so i dont know what specifically to look for
Original Skateboards
Original Skateboards - 10 years ago
@lil Kiddo wheels and trucks are a great start to an upgrade for sure. I'd check out a set of Paris 180s as far as trucks as a first step, should run you about $50ish.
Crappy no name trucks are the quickest way to junk performance. From there I would look at wheels, I personally like what I see out of Volante a lot, take a look at Volante Checkers if you want to learn to slide. Again about $50. Those two components run about what you payed for that deck, but you get what you pay for, decks: same deal.

@Liam LiveGaming Hey Liam - at your weight/height, the Pintail 40 is going to be the most well rounded deck size. You'd be comfortable on either one, but the 40" will give you more stability due to the ratio of your size and the platform. Plus, you know that you love the design. You can choose any wheels you want once you go onto the website and select all the components.

@Kemmi Crosby You should get the 37" if you want to turn easily, the 43"- 46" if you want more stability while pumping, and the 40" if you want something in between. Get the 40" if you're gonna use it primarily to get places.

@Kemmi Crosby Depends on the application as always. A fixed gear bike is amazing for flatland biking but would do poorly on a dirt trail. All I can say is don't buy a longboard "for style", you can always buy different colored wheels but each wheel is catered to different uses. In terms of length, I'm 5'5 as well and my setup for commuting is a 37" deck with 180mm trucks.

@Kemmi Crosby you can order the Pintail on our website: http://originalskateboards.com. The prices are on our website and they vary depending on what size you want. Do you know what size board you are looking to get?

Are Pintails really "super low to the ground" ? 1:11
They use topmount trucks, which (if I'm not mistaken) are the highest of all longboard truck systems
