If you decide to buy somewhere else or would like to support the show, please donate at https://www.paypal.me/surfnshow The new Lost “Maysym” is a great introduction to Asymmetrical surfboard design. This board has a Rocket tail with a longer rail line on the toe side and round tail with a shorter rail line on the heel side. The two different tails put together make it an Asymmetrical design to offer a different feel underfoot compared to your normal Symmetrical surfboard. On my toe side I could generate speed easily due to the longer rail line. It also has a single channel on the toe side adding extra tail rocker for traction, drive, and vertical pocket surfing. The heel side of this board has a round tail with a shorter rail line that enables you to turn faster on your front side cutbacks, top turns, and round house cutbacks. I also noticed the quick bottom turns backside due to the shorter rail line in addition to the drive and hold a round tail offers. The Maysym goes good front side and back side, and I highly recommend it as a small wave Groveler for 1-4’ waves. This board is ideal for intermediate to advanced level surfers looking for a fresh feeling under foot. Ride it as a Thruster for more pivot or ride it as Quad for a looser feel with a little extra speed. Board Dimensions: Stock 5’3” x 19.25 x 2.28 Liters 26.5 My Height: 5’9” Weight: 160 lbs or 72.57 kg

Noel - When you are assessing the speed dynamics of the quad vs. thruster setups, this arguably the most important surfboard attribute in performance surfing. However as you allude to in your board analysis, it does however seem difficult to tell the differences in speed by just the footage or "feel" alone. To obtain a more objective and numerical viewpoint, maybe try using one of the Rip Curl Search 2 GPS watches to track your speed on waves so you can compare different fins, boards, etc. I have one of these and it is pretty cool what you can do with the tracking data. Just a suggestion you could use to really dive deeper into board mechanics in your testing. Love the reviews, keep 'em coming - except that they make me want all of the boards!

@Surf n Show Reviews I have a trace but have been using it less and less since the company dropped the surfing/action sports and moved completely over to soccer a couple yeas ago. Also, you have to put a mount on every single board you test, which would probably be quite a hassle for you! I can't speak for the first gen watch but the GPS 2 is pretty good, might be worth a look into. Thanks for the reply buddy and keep shreddin'!
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
JPegs Thanks for your post... I used to use Trace Up to get all of that type of Data. I found the Trace unit to be a bit more accurate compared to the Rip Curl Watch. I had the first generation watch and it was pretty cool but the more I used it the less accurate I found it to be. Wave counting was the obvious way for me to check that.

At one point I was using the Trace Unit and watch at the same time and neither stats were very close to one another. Maybe the newer version of Rip Curl Watch is better.

Stoked to hear it’s working good for you. Cheers.

Why don't you add cryptocurrency as an option for tipping. You will keep more of the money sent to you. If you look at what btc, ltc (on the lightining network) bch and others offer I think you will be surprised. It will allow for as little as 1 satoshi (=$0.0000361895 today) for almost nothing. Yes there are some technical hurdles now, but it is well worth it today and will pay off in the future. If you are interested I will be happy to help. I will also be the first to tip you with it if you do.

I've been interested in asymetrical boards since they first came out. But I thought in your review of the Seaside that it seemed to flow effortlessly compared to the maysym. Seaside vs Maysym? What if Machado did an asym version of the seaside?
Have you contacted Album about their asym?
Thanks!

Great review Noel, ripping on both fin set ups. Looked to me like you were a bit smoother with the quad. Thinking about trying the KA large fronts with the Reactor medium rears in my 5'5" PJHP...good set up right? Been riding the Reactor larges in front and medium rears but the board still seems like it could be better....thanks.

Richard Embery

Christian69James might be the reactor quad rears that are the issue. I use Matt Biolos or Hayden shapes quad rears. I use KA lge in the side if I need to get down the line fast or lge Hayden’s in the side In more pockety waves.
In smaller, tighter waves I use Medium Filipe in the side and aircore sml quad rears in the back. Feels great with all set ups.
My mate who works for Mayhem also swears by the Lge Hayden set up as a quad.

Christian69James It might go pretty good... I think the KA fins might have a little too much rake for that wide PJHP. Maybe the Perfomers or Medina’s. Some neutral might work a little better.

Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Andy S Beach Break waves I like a a upright fin for quick pivot. I also like boards with the wide point a little back from center if it’s really peaky. That makes for a quick pivot too. Most of the beach breaks have a good steep peak for 1 quick turn then a flat spot to get through and then the wave has a little inside runner or it closes out so I like a board that doesn’t have too much rocker.

hi Noel how do yo think this board compared to the rocket wide and great review thanks
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Stephen Chard That’s a good comparison... both boards do tight turns in the pocket for small wave performance boards. I would say the Maysym has a little better wave range at 1-5’ and the RW is 1-3’ maybe 4’ at most.

Noel is this board a groveller? Or could it handle 6 foot like the Lost website claims? It looks to me like the original Rocket and different rail lines.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Terence Ingram It might handle 6’ surf. It’s epic in 1-4’ surf when I tested it and when the surf was a little over head it had great traction. I think you could shred this board as a Groveler and a Daily Driver.

Definitely the most progressive surfing I've seen you do on small waves out of all the boards you've reviewed. Question: Is the concave symmetrical relative to the stringer? For instance, if it had a vee coming out the back, would it come off dead centre of the stringer or leaning more towards one side?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Valdo van Zyl I think it would lean more to one side if it had a channel on one side like this Maysym. Some of the Asymmetrical designs are extreme that I have seen... off center stringer, twisted rocker, crazy tails, different fin placements, twin fin toe side Quad heel side... etc.
Philip Kelly
Philip Kelly - 5 years ago
I think this is your most interesting review yet. Really cool how you're explaining what's happening with the board and illustrating with the clip. Great surfing also. I always find a fish with a big/wide swallow tail almost impossible to surf backside. I wonder if that''s because of that long heel rail line fighting me. Also, if you were to try a keel on one side and quad on the other, which side gets the twin fin, heel or toe? Porb quad on heel I'm thinking. Thanks for all the reviews and knowledge.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Philip Kelly The Twin fin would go on the toe side, Quad on the heel. Not sure how that would work on this model but try it and see how it goes.

How boring... You used an asymmetrical board with symmetrical fin set ups. The coolest concept about the whole thing is using a large fin on your toe side and a quad set on your heel side in combination with the different rail lines.
Hu Man

@Surf n Show Reviews Copy that and thanks for the detailed reply. I'm always impressed at your thoroughness. I'll keep a lookout for further reviews from you on Asym designs. Respect.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Hu Man I tried one with a twin fin on my toe side and quad on my heel with the extreme tail design and it was quite a bit different. It was fast and extremely responsive but I could not get it to stop sliding out back side. I tried multiple fin sets with bigger fins for added control but it still felt like it needed a little more traction. I would like to experiment more with them but for me this Maysym is a great way for most surfers to start feeling the sensations of a Asymmetrical design. I hope to do more board reviews on Asymmetrical designs.
Marco Renzi
Marco Renzi - 5 years ago
Hey Noel,
i really appreciate your work, and i was really waiting for this, but in this review there is something that sounds strange to me.
You said that on a round tail the water line is shorter, but at the same time you said that round house are longer. I can't really understand. I believe that the water line is longer on the round tail, because on a squash or similar you have a break point that helps the release way before the round tail.
I believe also that because of the fact it is rounded, when you push on it and you are going on the backside, it starts turning before(because it is more rounded) if compared to a squash tail that has a rail line more straight than that.
So the main advantage is that it starts turning before a squash tail, but the arching turn would be larger compared to a squash version(more straight rail line) where, when you reach the tail it pivots better and the board starts to be more vertical and radical.
Just my opinion, and can be wrong Noel. I just want to say again thanks for your work.
Marco Renzi
Marco Renzi - 5 years ago
Surf n Show Reviews thanks Noel! I hope to see on the next review the sub driver swallow compared to the sub driver and showing pros and cons of each one! Keep going!!!
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Marco Renzi On this board the toe side rail is a little longer and you can really see it with a straight edge on it. The toe side is also a Rocket tail and the pivot/channel is where the rail line ends and the water breaks off. The rail line is pretty long and has a good amount of surface area on the toe side too compared to the heel side.

The heel side has the round tail and the rail line is shorter... and it looks to be pulled in slightly compared to the toe side. Maybe check one out in person and you will see what I am talking about.

This board does not have the extreme tail designs like most Asymmetrical designs out there where the toe side is 2-3” longer compared to the heel side. However the Asymmetrical feel is there offering quick heel side turns.

Mathieu Revel
Mathieu Revel - 5 years ago
Because pros have been used to adjust their surfing when they go frontside/backside. Once you figure out whats happening backside vs frontside you adjust, it s just natural for pros. If they start to go asymm then they step out of what they know.
