If you decide to buy somewhere else or would like to support the show, please donate at https://www.paypal.me/surfnshow The Lost Puddle Fish board is very fun in 1-3 waves. It's fast, ultra responsive, and it has the traction I like in small waves. When we I started testing this board for this review the waves were really small, (1-2) and I needed motivation to get out there and surf. We had a 3 week dry spell for waves and this little 5'2" Puddle Fish made it fun and manageable. As the waves picked up I continued to ride it in 3-4 surf just to see how it could handle a little size and to my surprise it went good. Most of the time Fish type boards like this for me have a tendency to slide out and be a bit unpredictable in turns. This board has great traction and control because of the tail design along with the release channel. I also enjoyed this board in the Carbon Wrap technology. The EPS foam core has good buoyancy for paddling and is very lively under foot. The flex characteristics in the Carbon Wrap Technology is spot on for small wave boards and I am a huge fan. Get yourself a Puddle Fish for the small meager days to keep you sessions fun. Cheers!!!

Ryan The Rock Yes for the most part. Boards with a hybrid nose tend to get top heavy and affect swing weight when I go over 27 liters.

Hi Noel I’m considering buying the 5’8 pu version of this board off craigslist. It’s about 34 l of volume. I’m 5’10 195 lbs. Do you think that this board in these dimensions might be too small for small/weak surf for a guy as heavy as me? I’m a beginner intermediate so I want to a good board to learn to pump on. I’m trying to decide between this board and a 5’11 helium FireWire mann Kine chumlee.

For a 220 lb guy on the east coast, Long island, what size do you think I should go for? 6'1?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
chris powers I would go 6’4” as a step down from your other boards. After you feel good on the 6’4” then drop again to 6’1”. The 6’4” will keep surfing fun.... if you go too short too fast it can be frustrating. Cheers

I actually don't have a small wave board. I've only been surfing for a few months, started at the beginning of the summer. I think 90% of Long Island conditions are 1-4 foot outside of hurricane swells so I kind of want a board that will work well in those conditions. I started on a tri-fin (later single fin) 8 foot Costco Wavestorm then stepped down to a 7 ft, 23', 3', 52 L of volume fish. My skill level is novice-intermediate. Want a shorter board that will float me at my weight that works well in small waves.

Bruno Palmieri I think the Puddle Fish is a good board for your skill level and the SC waves if your surfing Trestles. It’s user friendly, fast, and easy to turn quick. Getting the right size is key though.

Marc Umayam I like the PJHP better... it suits my style of surfing a little better. The PJHP is better in the pocket and the PF seems a tad faster down the line. Both boards are fun but the PJHP got a favorite for 2018. Sick little board as a Quad. Cheers

Hi noel, i reach to get your expert advice it not really the same board but still kind of close ;) ... i have a libtech puddle jumper as a groveler, i toke it with a lot of volume those dimension are 6’1” 22.5" 2.80" 44liters , iam 5.8 , 190 pound i find it really hard to move rail to rail to get speed do you think it due to overvolumed or the width of the board ? what should i look for as a groveler in term of dimension (compared to my regular board evo 5'9 / 20 1/2" / 2 3/4" 37.5 liters )? thanks you in advance .

Youdig I think it’s hard to turn for both reasons. Too much volume and too wide. I would scale both of those down. See if you can demo a board with the same volume as your Evo. Make sure the board you demo has a wide hybrid nose like your PJ so you get good paddling.

Hi Noel. Great review thank you I have just ordered a Puddlefish largely off the back of your review and need to get some fins sorted now. I’ve heard you talk about your preference for large fins in small wave boards for the extra drive but the fins you use in this review are mediums and as such I wondered if there was a specific reason for that (do you apply a different rule to quads?)

I'm on the verge of ordering one of these to prepare for San Diego summer mush fest, but am kinda stuck on dims and liters.
I'm 5'7 and weigh 150, my daily driver is a Sharp Eye Disco 5'7 somewhere between 24-25 liters (second hand custom dims). I would consider myself a solid intermediate surfer, can pocket surf semi-vertically and am in pretty good paddling shape.

I'm sliding between the 5'2 (26.25L) and the 5'3 (27.5L) 'bro' dims. Any reliable feedback from Noel or any other rider out there with some good insight would save me a lot of new board ordering anxiety!
Cheers!

I like to ride these Groveler boards around 26.5-27.5 Liters. This is close to my HPSB volume too but where I surf it doesn't too mushy where I have to grovel hard. I suggest at least 1-2 liters more than your daily driver if your a intermediate surfer. If you advanced then I think you will like the volume around the same as you daily driver board. Cheers

You seem to prefer this over the Firewire Go Fish. Can you speak to the differences between the two boards a bit and how that relates to performance in the water.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
vanislandsurf First off the GoFish is a Twin Fin with a more traditional fish out line. Both boards are really fast but the GoFish would tend to slide because of no center Fin for me. The Puddle Fish is a bit more pivotal and transitions from rail to rail faster with traction. Traction meaning the board would not slide out unless I wanted it too. I hope this helps.

How would you compare this board to the Pod Mod or the Psycho Nitro. I have those boards already, but maybe this one would be better?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Surfdocsteve The PM can surf a little more vertical in the pocket because the tail is pulled in a bit more. Remember the PF is a FIsh and it likes to project down the line with a wider tail. The PF is faster down the line and carves very well... it will go vertical but not as easy as the PM.

I have not ridden the Psycho Nitro yet sorry.

Is there any way you could give me the time stamps of the clips where you are riding it as a thruster, if any were featured?

This board looks very good on top turns, but it looks as if you are having to be pretty tentative off the bottom and at times it seems to be bouncing a lot, I know fish are known to be this way, but I'd be interested to hear more of your input specifically on how this board bottoms turns and how the fin setup effected that!

Thanks for creating such an awesome channel!

Just got one of these boards also in Carbon Wrap. Took it out the third time on Saturday and it broke in half. Bummed. Waves were only 2-3 ft. I thought the epoxy/carbon wrap combo would have been a lot more durable.
Sea Monkey
Sea Monkey - 6 years ago
I just posted a review on the Lost Facebook page and noticed that the first review after mine was almost identical-- buckled epoxy carbon wrap puddle fish. Leaves me wondering if Lost is too confident about the strength added to the board by the carbon wrap and is combining it with a lighter glass job that makes the board too weak.

kineticsurf
kineticsurf - 6 years ago
Seen more than a few of the expensive eps stringerless epoxy cues get their backs broken in the last few years. Seen dozens of the Hayden future flex snapped/creased. It most likely broke because it was held perpendicular to the shorebreak by your leash behind you while diving under the wave- the worst possible position for it. Doesn't have to touch the bottom. The wave folded it like a taco shell. Beware anyone that rides dumpy, shallow, grinding, barrelling beachbreak with these. The solution might be to not wear a leash if possible like those crazy dudes in Puerto Escondido/Playa Zicatela- a legendary board snapping spot. Noel only surfs beautiful and perfect deeper water cobblestone rivermouth points and never lets his board dangle by the leash because he never crashes and always makes the wave to the end. Unlike all of us average barnyard animals.....

Thanks for the reply dude!!

Well, i like all types of boards (longboards, shortboards, fishes, beaters, stubby's, etc.) and i try to surf as much as possible on any kind of board. Shortboard-wise, they're usually groveler types of boards since the surf here is powerless (I live in The Netherlands). So i i'm always searching for the perfect mix of volume and maneuverability for those sloppy waves. I even had the Lost 'Gullwing" at some point, which was awesome but it got stolen :( As of now i'm really interested in twin-fins because of their speeds and looseness. Had great sessions so far with twinners.

So yeah, tbh i am kinda interested in the Puddle Fish (and all the other boards review you do) but not from a buyer perspective because...you know...they're so expensive :P And i don't wanna suffer from Gear Acquisition Syndrome haha.

Anyway, i'm just always curious how they perform in the water and you always showcase them really well! You got a favorite board btw? I got a Pyzel Nugget which i absolutely adore right now (especially with twinfins).

I think Chris' podcast on the wire are all time! A few of them I've listen to multiple times. I had no idea who dan Mann was before these!

Kreeg, glad you like the review!! I am also stoked on how knowledgeable you are about what were up too. Thanks for your support. On another note... Chris Grow from the Shred Show that works for Fire Wire now is who I am working over there. We have been chatting a bunch and both of us laugh all the time about the two of us working together on something now. Chris is a really cool guy and I think he does great stuff. Cheers!!!
