Lost "Swordfish" Surfboard Review by Noel Salas Ep 101

Where to Buy: The Surf Station: https://www.surfstationstore.com/collections/lost-surfboards/products/lost-sword-fish-surfboard Surfboard Empire (Australia & NZ): https://surfboardempire.com.au/collections/lost-surfboards/products/swordfish Surf Ontario (Canada Only): https://surfontario.ca/collections/future-fins/products/futures-amt-twin-mini-trailer In this episode, I put the “Swordfish” through the paces with special guest Nate Yeomans! The Swordfish is a Kolohe Andino model inspired from the Lost RNF Retro. After riding the Swordfish, I noticed some similarities from the RNF Retro -- most noticeably is down-the-line speed and excellent traction through big carves. A couple visible changes from the RNF Retro and the Swordfish are the extra length and pointed nose on the Swordfish. These two major changes enhance performance surfing as the added rail line in length enables you to drive through turns, and the narrow nose keeps the first third of the board free from bogging through turns at high speeds. After thorough testing, I found the Swordfish to be very fast, loose, and extremely maneuverable with its sleek performance outline compared to most other fish-type boards I’ve tried. I am calling the Swordfish a daily driver, and I highly recommend it for intermediate to pro-level surfers in 2-6’ surf. If you’re looking for a fish that’s fast with a performance vibe, then you’ll love the Swordfish. Thanks for that epic review! Best one yet!

T. Rudolpho SF is faster and has a better small wave range. I like the SF better in 1-3’ surf and the PK better in 3-6’ surf.

Hey Noel. Always frothing on the clips. How would you compare the rad ripper vs the swordfish? You said you’ve never ridden a mayhem like this but what do you mean by this?

Hi guys
So many boards have similar dims. Even the Uber xl has similar dims. What would be the difference then?
Also how about a fcs h4 vid? Would be nice...
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 4 years ago
Guy Katz Watch my Pyzel Gremlin, Phantom, Ghost, Shadow reviews. Jon designed this family of boards exactly like your talking about. Lost has also done this with the Driver, Sub Driver, UBer Driver, Mini Driver, etc....
Guy Katz

@Surf n Show Reviews here's an idea. I'm lost's website and also other manufacturers boards are devided into groups. I assume these groups have general attributes that are common. For example, with Lost the pj family will have the same general rocker, outline etc compared to say the pro-formance series. Maybe it's a good idea to have a vid that talks about these families of boards and the differences between them. Just a thought...
Guy Katz
Guy Katz - 4 years ago
@Surf n Show Reviews thanks for the answer. Problem is for guys like me, it's hard understanding from board descriptions on the web all of the feature you list. Where I live I don't have the privilege of going to the shop and holding the board. So I can tell maybe for example an entry rocker exists, bit how does the Uber XL entry rocker compares to the sword fish entry rocker (this is just an example of course)
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 4 years ago
Guy Katz UD XL has similar DIMS but its not a fish.... rocker, Concaves, tail designs, outline shapes and curves..... etc. So many differences in each design and thats what makes each board model so unique. Surf boards are cool like that.... very rare to surf two boards and they feel exactly the same.. even if they are the same model, shaped by the same guy, and glassed at the same time. UD XL offers more performance in the pocket by design, the SF might carry a little more down the line speed.

Hi Noel. What’s the relationship between the length of a board versus wave size? If the waves were firing (say 4-6 ft or possibly bigger) I wouldn’t know whether to take out a 6”1, 6”2, 6”4, etc. please advise. Thanks for the awesome content!
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 4 years ago
Imran Esack It’s really about what your looking for as a surfer and how you want to surf bigger waves. For me I like a shorter board for So Cal waves where I surf. If I surfed HI or heavy beach break then I might want a little longer board with more rocker to give me more hold and rail line to push through my turns. The down side for extra length can be less maneuverability or slower reaction time as it takes a split second longer to turn them compared to a shorter board. Everything in surfing is a preference and how things feel... as your skill level advances you will change your equipment to fit the turns you want to do and how fast you want to do them. Speed is one important thing in surfing and as the waves get bigger you work less to generate speed... now it’s about controlling that speed and now it’s about quickness in your equipment responding to your thoughts in critical sections or maneuvers. Obviously this all matters more to each surfer’s skill level.

As much as I want to ride one of Matt's boards, I feel the glass job just isn't up to par compared to other big name shapers. But hold the phone, thank God for Lib-Tech and Matt's collaboration providing the best darn tech for durability in any surfboard make period!!!! Off to the Lib-Tech site I go, woo-hoo

@Surf n Show Reviews Thanks Noel for the insight into your channel and business model on YouTube. As a surfer and always on the search for waves and new boards under my feet, I believe you have an intellect group of surfers worldwide that tune in for the nitty gritty of surfboard design and are very savvy to new ideas and design regardless of where it comes from. I do hope and pray you can offer more for your subscribers down the track regarding unknown shapers and their design philosophy in your reviews as it grows. For me, I'd love to see that change on your channel!! Keep the vids coming and God bless that right hand point for the review lol..

Mark Trevor Thanks for your kind words and generous offer to pay for the board you want me to review. At this point I need more requests for that board for me to review that model. I try hard to focus on the bigger brands and popular models that most shops carry stock world wide. This concept helps surfers and shops everywhere. Occasionally I do something unique or I choose a model from a mid size board brand that looks fun to shred. I also try to get models that I get a lot of requests for. I’m not saying no.... I just need more interest from our community. Cheers

@Surf n Show Reviews G'day Noel. Wow, I'm embarrassed to say that I had completely forgotten about that tech offered by Matt.... I'm an Aussie residing on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and grabbing a board off the shelf in C4 construction is impossible and not readily available in surf shops here. I've actually never seen one in real life!!! So Matt Biolos, get your act sorted in Australia and I'll be riding one of your boards in stock dims when you do.... OK, Noel I'd love to see you review the model by Superbrand called the Tazer and I'll happily pay for the board for review if Superbrand doesn't deliver!!! Your break down and honesty on every review is of stand up quality. Thanks for your reply btw.

Hi Noel, just want to say love your channel, I live in the city an hour from the closest beach and with this lockdown corona event looks like it could be a month or more before I get back in the water. Diego Solé Really depends on your style of surfing... both boards are fast but the UD offers more performance. With that said the UD or UD XL would be my first choice... I like more performance boards. The SF is a great performance fish that can handle some size... the SF is a bit faster so it’s really up to you.

Hi Noel. How does this compare with the Pyzel Astro Pop? They both look fast with good flow...
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 4 years ago
rowanhicksdroskyn AP is a better Groveler... paddles better and has more glide. The SF will out perform the AP due to it being longer... more rail line offers more drive through turns. The SW has more rocker so it’s wave range is better from 2-6’ surf. The Ideal wave range on the AP is 1-4’ surf.

awesome review! looks like an awesome board. However, I am currently in the market for a new HP surfboard. I have my groveler/daily driver on lock and I love it (Channel islands Fred stubble) and I am looking for something a step above it for above average days in california (I am from malibu). I was thinking about the Happy but thought it might be a little too much rocker and wont get to use it enough. Any suggestions?

Why do people say 4ft Hawaiian? Surely even the Hawaiians are calling that 6ft+

@Nathan Jones they say it's the back of the wave that determines size. also the surf is better than most regions in the world, rich vs poor mentality.
Nathan Jones

I'll never understand why Hawaiians thinks they're so special that they get to redefine what 1 foot is. Units of measurement are objective, no subjective, and to make them subjective defeats the whole purpose of them in the first place.

pizzaHunter You have to make the effort to for those changes. When I surf a 5’2” Groveler it narrow’s my stance a bit, then the waves get bigger and i jump to a 5’7” or 5’9” it takes a few waves or a whole session to adjust and widen my stance again.

@Surf n Show Reviews would be sick if you did a instructional video on the back foot and it's movement and your weight pressure distribution on back foot when popping up driving and turns. Haven't found a really good one on youtube. I'm 6'0 220 and have more weight for my avg height. Wide point forward boards probably ddont help but im having trouble where if I pop up with my foot/stance back my weight is back and I get no drive but if my foot/stance is more forward I get drive it's just a struggle to get it back and make more radical turns. Trying to see if shorter boards help.

Surf n Show Reviews

The SF can handle bigger surf and carries more speed (Better Daily Driver). I think the RW offers a smoother transition from rail to rail (better Flow) and a tighter turning radius in wraps.

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 4 years ago
1" in length makes a big difference. When you add 1' in length they usually add a little more width and thickness. That width and thickness plus 1" in length added 1 extra liter in float. The extra width offers more speed and glide, and that little extra thickness allows me to push harder through my turns. I have come to the conclusion that if I gain 8-10 pounds of weight to my frame then I will need to add 1 Liter more foam to offset the foam - performance ration that I like. So yes the 1" is a big deal when you want to maximize performance. The Pro's are way more sensitive.... they freak over 0.5" longer.

@CW Rodriguez The FB is a Twin Fin (2 boxes only) and comparing a board like the Swordfish that comes with a 5 fin option to a Twin Fin is never a good comparison in my book. I understand what your saying about the FB and SW outline looks close but the fin box position alone on the SF is most likely to far forward (making the SW super Loose) to be considered a Twin Fin deign. I am sure there is more to be said about that but I am not a Shaper..... The other point I want to make is.... surfing a performance Twin Fin will never feel or respond like a Thruster... that center fin in a Thruster changes everything.

Really the only similarities between the FB and SF is there high Performance outline (Pointed Nose) and sleek stretched outlines for the word "Fish" to be in their names. The NB2 is a small wave performance board converted to a performance Fish in the FB, and the RNF Retro (Round Nose Fish) converted into a high performance Fish called the Swordfish. I personally like the idea and concept of both of these two boards and I hope to see more models like this coming and create their own category.
CW Rodriguez
CW Rodriguez - 4 years ago
@Surf n Show Reviews Noel, can you expand on that? Assuming that the fishbeard is a fish version of the neckbeard, which is super high performance in smaller-ish waves, I would think it would combine the best of both worlds (performance shorty and twin fish). How does it differ when you're riding from the swordfish. Thanks
