I got one board in Carbon Wrap EPS and the other board is in PU/Poly. The Uber Driver is a small wave speed machine and surfs like a High Performance short board. I really enjoyed this review and both boards we very fast and felt good under foot. However the Carbon Wrap had that extra edge in the small waves with a little extra SPRING in my turns. I highly recommend the Uber Driver for surfers at the Intermediate to advanced skill levels. This board is perfect for Southern California waves in the 1-6' range. My Height: 5'9" My Weight: 160lbs

Hi mate. In your experience - how would you size the UD for a daily driver in the 1-5ft range (the same as a surfers height, an inch or two smaller than a person height, or as short as you can go relative to a surfers usual volume)? Also, I am a balanced-footed surfer who turns, trims and pumps down the line with adjustments between front and back foot pressure (while also turning hard off the back foot at the end of cutbacks and extending quickly out of the end of top turns). The Driver series are usually suited to back footed surfers like yourself & CI's Connor Coffin who spend most of the time on your back foot. I was thinking that the way the UD has The Rocket front and the Driver rear could make a Driver for balanced-footed surfers. Perhaps you have some insight. Cheers again :)

Kapukataumahaka Ōwheo I would size it be liters and dims. Liters... take your weight in pounds and divide it by 6. That will give you a good range for Intermediate to advanced surfers.

The UD suits more of a back footed surfer

Ryan The Rock Both boards are epic. I say RW 1-3’ Spinetek and if your looking for the 1-4’+ then go UD. The RW struggles in 4’+ in my book. The UD can hang 1-5’ no problem

Hi Noel
Love your reviews !
Need your advice for:
HD or f13 for small Mediterranean beach breaks , I want more release fill in the pocket..
one more thing is about the size fins, normally I prefer the large (I’m 150lb)fin for the bigger and faster wave to add more control. On small waves I tried like you recommended large(performance neo)but it feels to tide for me.
Maybe to try the reactor large for the small waves?
I surf now on og flyer 27.5 and it feel great 3-4 feet .for smaller waves I have gremlin but I don’t like it because I prefer more of the HPSB feel.
Thanks
Keep going bro
Ran Hadad
Ran Hadad - 5 years ago
@Surf n Show Reviews I will give the gremlin another chance with large reactor...and update .thanks

Ran Hadad You can also try a Medium Performer Center fin to loosen up that NEO Glass set.

I would go UD for the small wave performance board.

I surf a CI 5 8" 29.3L PU OG Pod as my go to board from tiny to up to well overhead as long as its not barreling too hard it works well and is super responsive both in doing airs and holding the rail in big turns, I absolutely love that board. I surf a 5 9" 29L PU Quiver Killer whenever I am surfing reef or powerful surf up to double overhead and holds well without sacrificing drive. I am trying to find that board that fits in the middle between these 2 boards. I have a 5 9" 29L PU Psycho Killer and it works ok but doesn't seem to have that drive to get around sections, feels a little slow unless there is a decent amount of push. I have tried a lot of CI's (Rubble, Fever, BlacknWhite, #4,) and none fit the bill. Can you give me your opinion. I have been looking at the Uber driver, Voodoo child so far and am open to suggestions. I want that middle board I buy to fit into the family of boards I love to use and work well. I live near Ventura. I surf pretty neutral footed, like to have a fast board but still holds in the turn but not too much where I can't slide the tail out off the top or punt an air. Thanks for your insight
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Jeffrey Bailey Yes, the NB2 can hang in some hollow waves. I would go PU for you want to ride it in. I would go Square tail... the gamble to go Swallow tail could be expensive. Just saying
Jeffrey Bailey
Jeffrey Bailey - 5 years ago
just watched your review on the NB2. Rad!!! Couple questions when you have the time.
1)Do you think this board could handle steeper pocket and barrel sections at times? A board that could be ridden on a smaller/medium day at a reef break or punchy beachbreak besides on a typical CA beach day
2) I would get a PU so you recommend the larger fins for a bit larger surf?
3)Random thought/question. The tail trips me out a little (I need to get out of my comfort zone I guess more), I usually order custom from CI, what do you think with this board with a swallow tail. Would it change it up completely?
Thanks for all your insight and your quick initial response

Thank you for the review Noel. Quick question. I am 5’9, 167 lbs and very intermediate. I am trying to get more maneuvers down, improve my backside and my surfing overall. Do you recommend this board? Also at 5’9 or 5’8? Most reviews say that the UD rides like a skateboard but I want to maintain the surf feel and not lose control when it gets to 5-6ft. I surf a CI Peregrine 5’9 19 2 1/4 right now.

Hi Noel , just started watching your reviews today. congratulations for the great job and for the surfing...
I just decided making a custom uber driver for my small wave board . I was between the UD or the Psycho killer (third option was the Pudle jumper HP ). Do you think it was a good choice between those 3? Back home here in Brazil when is small is either soft open face waves or dumpy hollow shore breaks. thanks again for the great feedbacks!!

Hi Noel, I'm looking to buy a new board and I'm deciding between the eps uber driver or the pu I really want a board that can handle barrels and larger waves but one that can also do alright in the smaller waves with turns, and strength is pretty important as well to me; which board would you recommend is it worth getting the eps board and sacrificing some of its capability on the larger waves or do you reckon it would be able to handle it alright?
Thanks a lot I found this very helpful

Hey Noel and community, so I picked up a stock 5'6" actually the very board you reviewed in the video... I'm 5'8" 145lbs Intermediate 8 years surfing, surfing in San Diego. I gotta say, I LOVE this board! I've tried a bunch of boards you've reviewed and this is probably my favorite so far. I love my Lost Driver and this feels just like that board when surfing, but just easier to get in the wave and flatter rockered. I've taken it out in 2-5ft conditions and it's worked perfectly with the medium Kalohe fins. Overall I love this board and agree with your review, but I think ideal wave range for me on this board is probably more like 2-5ft, or 2-6ft. If you love Lost boards, especially the Driver series, I think you gotta try this board out. Easy to surf and paddle, but still performs very similar to the Driver. STOKED to find a magic board! Thanks for the awesome reviews Noel!

Thanks Noel for the great reviews! I'm stuck between an Uber Driver CW or a Pyzel Phantom. I was thinking of getting the Phatom with Electralite to give it a bit more durability since you mentioned you put pressure marks on it relatively easily. I was also considering going for the 5-fin setup after watching your Phantom review. Is it possible to get the UD in 5-fin or is that pointless? Also Thinking 5'9" for both as I'm 6'0 and abt 165 lbs. Which board do you think would better as a daily in avg. So Cal waves? Thanks o much man!

m00ftak Stoked you like our show! Both boards are sick! The UD will grovel better in 1-3’ surf but the Phantom will be better in. 2-6’+. Noel, Looking at a UD for my son for knee/head high+ punchy beach break.  The only local options are with FCS II fins, not familiar with their lineup.  Like you, our go to fins are the Future AM 2's.  For FCS II with this board would you go with the FCS AM large fins, the Kolohe Andino's, or the Performers Carbon?  Also, for knee/head high + plus punchy beach break, CI Fever or UD?  Thanks again.

This vs sampler vs holy grail? What to get?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Kaleb Mannigel All 3 Boards are mental and you will be stoked on them all. Sampler in 1-3’ surf is super fast and paddles good too, but it lacks a little tail rocker so when it gets over 4’ it struggles with traction off the bottom. The UD goes good in 1-5’ surf and paddles good too with quick get up and go speed. The HG is best in 2-6’ surf and is very responsive and fast.... I would say the HG suits my style of surfing the best out of these 3 boards as a daily Driver but the UD and Sampler will grovel a little better.

Hi Noel. Great reviews as usual. Thinking about trying a carbon wrap or spinetek. I know they float A bit more than a pu. I normally ride my high performance pu boards at around 27 litres so is it best to drop the litres to 26 - 26.5 litres in carbon wrap/spinetek. Many thanks.

Richard Wadham-Smith The best performance Groveler in 1-3’ is the CI Rocket Wide Spinetek. The Lost UD is epic too and it’s good in 1-5’ surf with a HPSB outline.

Richard Wadham-Smith I usually order the EPS boards roughly the same. I would just order the DIMS you like on a new board and if the liters come out around 26.5 or 26.8 then you will be fine with EPS.

The CW and Spine-Tek constructions are epic.

Great review as always Noel! After a bit of advice if possible. I'm 64kg and currently riding a custom 5'8" 23.5L Sub Buggy which is going really well. It grovels quite well (with effort) but does it's best work with a little more steepness / power (2ft+). I'm considering something with a bit more go in smaller, fatter, less powerful conditions. Have been considering a 5'0" puddle jumper HP, but now after seeing this I'm somewhat torn. Any advise you can offer based on your experience? Cheers and keep up the good work!

Brandon Chan Dang that is a tough decision.... I have not ridden the Phantom yet but I have one coming. To be honest I think the rage on the Phantom and UD will be better 2-6’ surf. I have a question. Do you feel that the Uber Driver is more high performance feeling than The Sampler by CI SUrfboards?
I recently purchased The Sampler by CI surfboards and DON'T like it. I found that the board seems to catch rail up on the nose due to lack of rocker. For example, when I go for those initial high line pumps when going backside, it seems to catch. I have always loved The Whip by CI Surfboards and is still my favorite. Can you tell me from experience do you prefer the Uber in quality waves vs the Sampler?

Hi Noel,
Thanks for the feedback bro!
Probably leaning towards HS HG since I like the extra paddle power and mostly surf in 1-3 foot surf and if still performs similar. I bought the Fever and sampler in the last year so this seems to be a cool all arounder or in betweener surf. Your new review seems cool on that new board with replacement tails, interesting to see you liked the DT better. Thanks for all your efforts!!

R Watty Both boards are epic! If you want a HPSB look under your feet then go with the UD but it might struggle a little in the 5-6’ surf. The HG has its wide point front from center so it will paddle better. The HG surfs like a HPSB with a little fuller outline. Cheers

Tough call on which one I would choose but the UD has a little more speed but the MB felt so good on Round house cut backs.

Just got my hands on one of these as a demo, can’t say I’ve had a bad wave on it the thing flies, turns on a dime and still capable of proper turns for a small wave board. If comparing it to the B.B. It’s not that it’s a bad board but the UD is way more exciting for me. B.B. feels better in longer rail carves but that’s about it, everywhere else UD slaps it’s arse.

How would you compare the Uber driver to the Puddle Jumper HP? They seem to have a similar outline, and rocker. Which would you consider the best from knee to head high or even overhead when it's kind of mushy?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Leandro Dias I would not worry so much about your thickness... I like to use Measurements and liters as a guide. So use the liters to gage your thickness... don’t get hung up with measurements only. They work together with Liters.
Leandro Dias
Leandro Dias - 6 years ago
Surf n Show Reviews Thanks again. I'm trying to get the UD as a daily board that can still hold when it gets a bit bigger, in that case how thick do you think a good all-round board should be regarding my weight?

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Leandro Dias I think the 5’9” at 29 Liters will work better for small mushy surf on the East Coast. The 5’9” is going to feel like a skateboard compared to your 6’2”. Maybe you should try a demo board that is 5’8” or 5’9” with similar outline and see how it floats and feels under your feet before you pull the trigger on a purchase.

Surf n Show Reviews Thanks for the reply. I've been thinking about getting the Uber Driver at 5'8 19' 2.38' at 28l, I'm a 5'8 intermediate surfer at 155 - 160 lbs. I only have one board, a shortboard which is 6'2 18 3/8 2 3/16 at 25.5 or 26 l, it works great when the waves get overhead + or about chest high + with at least some push to them, but when they get mushy I'm always fighting to maintain speed. That is why I'm looking for something with more volume that can still perform. The only thing I'm unsure is the thickness, should I go with the stock dims at 2.38' or maybe a custom at 2.35' or 2.36' so I can still manage it in a bit bigger waves? As you can see my current board is very thin, but I'm very interested in a board that sits higher on the water. Since I live in Central FL I wouldn't mind the 2.38' UD as long as it doesn't feel like I'm surfing a floaty.
Thanks for the reviews! They really help "regular" surfers know how different boards feel, since most of us don't have the stacks to buy them.

Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Leandro Dias The UD has more of a small wave performance outline and the PJHP has a super wide tail. The PJHP goes good in 1-3’ surf and the UD goes good in 1-6’ surf. The width on PJHP carry’s a little more down the line speed in 1-2’ mush but the UD our performs the PJHP in the pocket.

Hey Noel, love the surfing as always! Just wondering how you can surf such low volume for small waves? I’m the same weight as you but surf 27 liters for chest to double over head waves, and around 31 litres for my small wave board. Although I am surfing Irish waves, which are usually lower period (12 to 14 seconds). Are you just very experienced and able to surf lower volume or are the waves more prefect out there and you can reduce volume?
David Sweeney
David Sweeney - 6 years ago
Yeah absolutely. I think you have me sold on the Uber driver, just hard to decide what volume to go for now. I think I will add 2 litres, so go to 29L. Thanks for the help :)
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
David Sweeney I think my low volume Grovelers are little bit of both.... fun waves that have a little push and my skill level. I surfed on the QS in the 90’s... so I am accustomed to riding boards that are super sensitive to my surfing.

If I surfed a mushier wave then I would probably go up in volume maybe 1-2 liters max. So 27-28 liters but the board would have to be a hybrid of some sort and super short too. If I add the volume then it needs to be shorter so it turns like a skateboard but has the drive, projection, and flow I am looking for.

Boards that have too much volume feel sluggish and hard to turn quickly.

A board with perfect volume responds to my thoughts and a board with excess volume feels like a delayed reaction in my efforts to do the maneuver. I hope this makes sense.

Hey Noel, for the moment the best surfboard for 1-6ft i read you talking about was the HolyGrail and Sampler (1-4ft), and the number one of selling in 2017 according stabmag and winner the simas surfboard 2017 and with a different construction and shape (something that you look for) was SCI-Fi, and it still selling like a number one. I like watching these video’s but I think you have a misconception of “drive” in a surfboard. You seem to use drive as a term for speed in your videos while Chris grow from shred show explained it more as a feeling where you feel planted on your board. This feeling is much like a sports car compared to a regular car in that you can drive at really high speeds and be planted and stuck to the road. In the sports car you can take a turn at a high velocity and know that you won’t slip out unlike the regular sedan in which you wouldn’t make the corner or slide out. Drive in a surf board though comes with the more flow and less pivot but you can definitely push hard in those turns. So to put this into fins a longer rake equals more drive and less pivot. A single concave in a surfboard creates drive when on a rail. A double concave will generate speed under your feet but be more susceptible to sliding out because the loss in drive. With drive does come speed but speed and drive aren’t the same thing. Thanks for the vids hopefully this helps.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Allan Burgonio I think Vinny is talking about me confusing Speed and Drive not Drive and Traction. I look at speed and drive being the same because a boards attributes is what gives a board speed or drive and the attributes in a board (rocker, concaves, rail Foil, Tail Design, board outline, etc...) will also determine the traction a board has to keep that speed through turns.

Chris Grow talks about a sports car having drive through hair pin turns at high speeds compared to a normal car. He then says a Round Tail in a surfboard will give you drive but what he is really talking about is traction and the ability to hold the speed a surfer generates going into a turn and accelerating out of it because of the boards design.

A sports car is designed to hug the road and take turns at high speeds because of its overall design. Low center of gravity, wide wheel base, weight, Tail Design, Tire’s width, and tire design etc. All of these attributes determine the traction a car has to hold its speed in and out of turns and drive out of them without spinning out. Much like a surfboard.

I hope this makes sense and helps you understand how I break down the boards.
Allan Burgonio
Allan Burgonio - 6 years ago
Vinny Pro, Noel does make the distinction between drive and traction. Also single concaves allow more drive and lift but can also feel sticky on turns or rail release. It's all preference and Noel does an excellent job in breaking it down. I agree with Vinny and Noel on fins. Fins can fine tune your ride to the surf conditions. Most guys don't switch out their fins, but I have found it can be as critical as the board design. Keep on shreddin!!

Your right about the carbon wrap being worth the extra money.. in Australia a carbon wrap is about another $200 extra than a PU. My puddlefish is PU Im like 240 pounds (110kg) I had it glassed strong 4x6x4 it has a few compressions under the front foot. But it is glassed heavy. My carbon wrap quiver killer (which I’ve had longer) has not one compression under front foot and only small compressions in front of tail pad from duck diving.. so def worth the extra money.. And think of it as an investment because your do better in the resale when you’re done with the board..

Surf n Show Reviews yes mate, I do :) Got the model the guy above mentioned and a few others too. Great shaper, but he’s not the bigger brand guy that would have shops over the States as well

Surf n Show Reviews JR is a gold coast shaper. Shapes Wade Charmicheal’s boards, Kerrzy used to ride for him a bit too. Keely Andrews is also on his boards (came second in the Roxy pro recently)

Great shapes!

Ben Costantini They are Very similar but the Uber Driver has more down the line speed compared to the Baby Buggy. Both boards are EPIC though!!!

Thank you Noel, been waiting on this one and you didn't disappoint!!!! I appreciate you adding the Psycho Killer comparison at the end. Keeping it in the ..lost family and giving us a solid review comparison knowing where both boards excel. Shredding in the water and with the reviews Brother, keep up the great work!!!
