If you decide to buy somewhere else or would like to support the show, please donate at https://www.paypal.me/surfnshow In this episode I put the Lost Uber Driver XL through the paces in 2-6’ surf. The testing began in the ocean with 2-6’ surf before we traveled for more board testing in the pool at BSR Surf Resort in Waco, TX. The Uber Driver first came out in 2018 as a small wave performance board. Earlier this year for 2019 Matt made some revisions to the original Uber Driver to make it faster in small gutless surf. After making those revisions he added Uber Driver XL for what he calls the “Bro Dimensions.” The UD XL suits the bigger guy or average weekend warrior surfer that wants a little more foam under foot in a shorter, wider, thicker package that can still rip. The UD XL is legit in my book…. it’s fast, forgiving, and it offers great flow through maneuvers. The extra foam in the XL dimensions is distributed very well and offered excellent performance in 2-6’ surf. You East coast guys that like shredding 1-2’ surf on boards with a HPSB outline will be stoked on the UD XL. I am putting the UD XL in the Small Wave Performance Category as a Favorite of mine for 2019. I highly recommend it for surfers that want that HPSB outline to Grovel from the low end intermediate – advanced level surfers. For surfers that range from advanced – pro level I recommend the 2019 Uber Driver for a little more sensitivity and responsiveness out of their sled. Custom Surfboard Dimensions: Diamond CW: 5’5” x 19 x 2.3 Liters 25.7 (board weight with traction 4.75 lbs no fins) PU/Poly: 5’5” x 19 x 2.3 Liters 25.7 (board weight with traction 5.50 lbs no fins) Diamond Carbon Wrap weight with Beta 2.0 R8 side fins and R6 center fin = 5.15 lbs My Height: 5’9” My Weight:160 lbs or 72.57 kg

Hey Noel, what are your thoughts on using a little thicker board and 2 ply stringer to increase flex, for those who like poly and a little more volume?

Noel, Love the reviews. What would you say are the big differences between the Uber Driver XL and the Rocket Wide? Looking for a NE Florida daily 1-3’ board that still works during the occasional bigger swell. I’m 5’8” and 175 Lbs. Thanks!

Hey Noel, great video once again! In small waves I ride the pyzel gremlin and move to phantom and then ghost as size & energy increase. Can the driver XL be placed somewhere in between the gremlin and phantom? I feel like it's quite different from the gremlin despite being used in same size. Is it somehow more high performance than the phantom too? What do you think? Thank you!

Hey Noel! Thanks so much for the sick reviews you do...so appreciate the work you guys put in to it!!
Question? I just picked up an Uber XL Cwrap but with FCS 2 SETUP. What fins would you recommend in that setup? Thanks again!

Hey Noel. How would you rate the Uber XL vs the CI Rocket Wide, both being small wave performance boards?

Noel, the outline looks like the JS BB3. You obviously liked this one quite a bit more. Can you compare the two? I have a BB3 that I like but don't love so any advice would be appreciated. BTW I am one of those right coast guys who like shortboards in tiny surf. Thanks as always great review.
rippert
rippert - 4 years ago
Thanks Noel that really helps! The BB3 definitely seems a bit sluggish in small surf I think I'm going to try out the XL. Much appreciated.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 4 years ago
rippert The BB3 really doesn’t go that good in 1-2’ slop from my experience... seems to have too much rocker. It didn’t have the X Factor in small surf with their HYFI tech. However the BB3 felt good in 3-5’ surf.... The UD XL carries more speed and offers similar performance in 1-5’ surf. So the UD XL out performs the BB3 in 1-2’ surf and i liked it better than the BB3 in overhead surf too.

Hey noel, Can you tell me difference between the captain fin co tyler warren especial and CF twin especial. It looks like the tyler warren is a more drivey and drawn out template and the CF is less drivey but more pivitol. Anyways, thanks for the input!

Hey I think it would be really cool if you order a spine tek dumpster diver and review one. I ride one and it is unreal. I think so many people forget that board and what it started in the industry, it would be interesting to see where it stacks up to all the new boards in its class. Love the show.

Tyler Killeen I love the idea... I never rode the DD but I always wanted too. I will reach out to the folks at CI and see what they say. My guess is they will say it’s an older model and not relevant to what’s in the shops but if we had a lot of requests for the review then they might do it.

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 4 years ago
Maynard Lim Yewww!!! Both boards will go good in 1-3’ mush... the Sampler paddles better and will carry more down the line speed but the UD XL offers more overall performance and has a better wave range of 1-5’ surf. Sampler will struggle a bit over 3’ surf.

Watching the rides before your talk I could already see how effortlessly you stayed on plane, no need to struggle or overwork it as dictated by circumstance to keep or regain speed.. just surfing freely! Nice to hear you bear this out in your review.

KOSTAS GOULAS Great question...it feels like it wants to be driven off the tail but surfers that are Neutral or even a bit heavy front footed should be good on this board. It’s pretty forgiving... and fast.

hey Noel, how does this board compare to the original (pre-dim change) uber Driver? I'm 5'10 and 180 so I feel like Im in a solid inbetween the two choices. In really good shape so float and paddling is never an issue and surfing typical OC waves, what do you think?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 4 years ago
Antonio Michael This UD XL has a fuller rail compared to the 2018 UD. Paddles a bit better due to a little less rocker and a tad more width. The fuller rail felt good too... I would probably go with the XL if your intermediate but if your advanced-Expert then go with the 2019 updated UD version.

Hey Noel amazing video! For a old guy (45) in smal waves (2 -4') which is better Uber Drive XL or Seaside RB? Thx
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 4 years ago
Dr. Ivan Penna UD XL is a Small Wave performance board.., so getting in the lip vertical and quick turns in the pocket is what it likes to do. The Seaside is a performance Fish... not much of a comparison between these two models. The Seaside flies down the line and will offer some performance cutbacks and quick transition turns but it doesn’t rip in the pocket like a SW Performance board.

Hi Chief. Maybe this isnt a good comparison but I lke the uber and i also like the neckbeard 2. Im healed enough from surgery to return to blacks. For performance size waves at blacks which would you choose? Also, im 200 lbs trying to get much lighter if that needs to be factored in.

IzandEva Inmyheart Both models offer performance surfing... I say go with the UD XL for the extra foam until you drop to your ideal weight. Then I suggest resetting and let’s talk again for the next board when you are at your fighting weight. Cheers

I've been looking forward to this review, I'm 5'7 and 200 pounds (plus full winter kit) and have always wanted a daily driver around the same height as me or less but still with enough volume & be a ripper board too. The XL could be a perfect match for me. Thanks for the helpful review Noel.
