Lost Pro-Formance "Driver" Surfboard Review by Noel Salas Ep. 43

This surfboard review is on the Lost "Driver" surfboard. The Driver was originally launched in 2010-2011 and became a favorite amongst Lost team riders and surfers around the world. The main purpose for the release of the Driver in 2017 was to give the surf community the opportunity to purchase a board off the rack in surf shops with the same glass lay up as the Lost Pro team riders. With this option the boards are lighter, more responsive, and better flex. The one major draw back to this Pro-formance glass job is they don't last as long. I ordered two Drivers with the exact same DIMS in two different constructions. My thoughts around this were to see how the Driver performs in small waves with the Carbon Wrap EPS/Epoxy construction compared to the PU/Polyester Resin. Throughout the entire review I switched off riding them both but in the end I gravitated towards the PU/Poly as a favorite for this board review in 2-6' surf. I will say that the Driver is one of new favorites for 2017 and I recommend this board for surfers in the intermediate to advanced skill levels. This board is user friendly, very fast and responsive, and it has great flow too.

Hey Noel, what's the reason for riding Lost Driver in 26.76 vol and say JS Monsta 8 in 26? Is it due to what size waves you'll be riding the boards in ?

Hey man I'm really struggling to find the right dims for me on the driver. How would you custom one for the smaller end of the range? I'm 60kgs and about 174cm. Old board is 27L and I think I drop a few L

Pedro Lemgruber I have not surfed the Sub Driver or PR. The Sub Driver looks amazing to me... I love the Driver. The PR has a lot of rocker so I don’t have much interest in that board for where I surf. The S Driver fits my home breaks really well though. Performance Board made for smaller waves is what I surf 90% of the time. I would go Sub Driver or Customize a Driver for 1-4’ surf. Cheers

Hi Noel, you talked about building a quiver and about changing length but not volume. I know you get groveller and standard dims on the websites but do you vary volume when you change length or keep the same? I am trying to build a quiver around my every day board and not sure on which way to go with volume
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
ttv74 I did not try it in my 5’7” DIMS but I know it would go mental. I don’t remember if the belly rocker is flat or continuous but if it has continuous it’s not much. The Driver has a big sweet spot under the front foot and it’s very fast in flat spots. Excellent HPSB. If I surfed competitively again I would have a few of those in my quiver for sure.
ttv74
ttv74 - 5 years ago
@Surf n Show Reviews Hi Noel, have you ridden the driver in your 5'7 dims? If so how did it go? Does the driver have a continuous or staged rocker? many thanks in advance.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Ross Thompson My HPSB have been 5’9” in length and volume ranging from 26-26.8 on a PU. EPS I like my volume around 25-26. I usually keep my Small wave Performance Boards around the same liters but 2” shorter 5’7”. My Grovelers can vary from 5’2”-5’5” depending on board outline and foil and volume around 25-27ish. My mini step up boards are 5’9” - 5’11” roughly 27 liters all PU.

If the Grovelers have a Hybrid nose with a lot of foam under the chest and front foot then I like them really short and volume roughly 25-26. If I get them too long all that foam and area up front messes with swing weight and it dictates how the board surfs for me.

Looks epic you’ve sold me on this one!
How did you find the thickness? I noticed you rode this board slightly thinner than most other hpsb’s.
Did this have a similar feel and “push back” to your usual dimension?
For a point of comparison I ride a fever at 2 7/16. Do you think a 2 3/8 driver would be similar?
Simon Durkin
Simon Durkin - 5 years ago
Rode my Pro-formance for the first time and the jury is still out. I had an odd behaviour where I felt (at times) the board wanted to go straight on the take off. Had to force it to point in the down the line direct. On two occasions I ended up bottoming out and losing power (verses being at the top of the wave, where the power source is) and the wave ran away from me. I also found the FCS Performance large fins a bit stiff. Next surf I will use MB (red/black) large fins. Stats: 90kg, 6'2 board.
Simon Durkin
Simon Durkin - 5 years ago
Update: just returned from the Maldives. The surf was between 2-5 ft. My quiver included JS MB HYFI 6'1, Urber Driver 6'2 and Ghost 6'3. As the wave had a fair amount of punch, the HYFI was not really required. The Urber drive was my good to board for this trip.

Hello Noel Salas, I have the good question:
The "carbon wrap" that are sold in stores has the same construction as those used by professional surfers? Do not they use a lighter, more flexible construction in carbon wraps too?
Thiago Bona
Thiago Bona - 6 years ago
Professional surfers use the pro-formance construction in PU board, with single layer 4 0z cloth on the deck. But in carbon wraps, the pros do not use different construction that the standard carbon wraps? Sorry for my english, i don’t speak so much...

Hey Noel, great review! How does this board compare to the mini driver? I'm 5'6" 110 pounds and was thinking about getting a 5'6" mini driver at 24.68 liters for better waves in the 3-6' range. Do you think that that board is the correct size for me or too big and too much volume? Also, how much will the rounded pin of the mini driver stiffen up the board? Thanks!

Also what dims would you ride in 5'7"? I'm the exact same size as you but older and on the east coast. What would you recommend. Could I make the driver work in small mushy waves or would a groveler fever work better? I like to ride short boards not fish even in small surf. Thank you again.

Surf n Show Reviews
Thanks for the reply!
So you're saying the "bro dims" comes with a thicker glass job?
They don't make any pro dims with a standard glass job
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
alon nir This Lost Pro-Formance Driver in PU has a light glass job on the deck. The point on this release of the Driver in the Pro-Formance glass job is for us non professional surfers to get exactly what the Pro’s are riding and a surfer like Kolohe Andino is looking for performance over durability.

A CI or JS with the same performance glass job would be just as pressure dented and damaged. I hope this answers your question.

Hey Noel, I really appreciate your reviews. I have a 5'9 pro-formance sub driver and i really enjoy it. The one negative thing about it, is it is not durable and doesn't feel comfortable in larger conditions. I am looking at either the lost driver in carbon or a JS Monsta Box Hyfi for more durability and better in larger conditions. do you have any suggestions?
Surf n Show Reviews

Sorry i was talking about the sub driver in pro-formance glass, I've never tried the driver. but was looking to buy a board to surf in Mexico in overhead to 2x overhead waves. i travel a lot so durability and performance is what I'm looking for. thanks for the quick response and happy holidays!
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Spencer McCroskey Stoked you like our show!!! The Driver in PU with the Pro-Formance Glass is not very durable.,.... not sure why your not comfortable in bigger surf. How big of surf are you talking about? The Driver is supposed to be good in 3-6’ surf. The Driver in CW will be more durable but not a good construction for 5-7’ surf especially with some texture on the surface. The EPS in general is very buoyant compared to a PU and it’s harder to bury the rail in bigger surf.

What fins are you using with the Driver you have right now?

The JS Monsta Box in HYFI i only recommend in 2-4 surf... it is not made for bigger waves.

My board suggestions for you are this...

1. Lost Driver in PU with a stronger glass job.
2. JS Air 17 in PU or Monsta 6 in PU.

Noel, thank you for the awesome reviews. Like you mentioned, I’m thinking of getting the Driver in smaller wave dims. Hey Noel, I'd like to ask you something since you are very much in the surfboard game these days.
I have a 5'11'' quite thin, 25 liter board shaped by Matt Biolos and I was wondering since I already have fairly good surfing skills I'm trying to go for airs more often but I tend to "chicken out" mainly because of my fear of breaking such a fragile board as I've landed on the couple of hard floaters in the past and got pretty scared because of the board. As you can see I really like this board. Any tips or advice?
Also, great job here as always!

S C The Proformance is much lighter and more responsive but it pressure dents a lot easier compared to a regular stock PU., I really like the Proformance boards but mine would not last to long if I rode it 5 days a week and did not rotate it off with other boards. I am really tough on the deck of boards though... some of my friends that are intermediate surfers aren’t tough on theirs and would be fine with the Proformance Glass job. Cheers

What's your opinion on front foot traction pads? I've had a few older guys tell me it helps them from stomping out there decks but I feel like it would add more weight than wax and cancel out the benefits of lighter glass? I've only seen older guys and pros who do a lot of airs using it so I never knew what to make of it
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
The front foot traction will help save the deck a bit... that's one of the reasons why I use a tail pad. I would blow the tail to pieces without a traction pad. Front foot traction is liked by some air guys for sure... but if you surf in your trunks a bunch it could give you some heavy rashes. I have one small wave board with front foot traction that I just recently tried and it felt pretty good. It will add a little weight but not enough to talk about for me.

Keith Hindle The Driver has a more performance feel compared to the OG Flyer.

How would you compare and contrast the driver and the OG flyer, are the pretty similar or no?

The Ghost review is coming but it could be a month or two. We will be shooting some different waves for the board too.

Right on, I know you have the ghost coming and I'm looking forward to that and more Pyzels would be awesome too. When should we expect the ghost review? Also I understand if its not practical for you but it would be cool if you could get some of these HPSB in more hollow/powerful waves.

Keith Hindle Not sure at this point. I have the Lost Baby Buggy coming up and 3 completely new models from Lost for 2018.

Thanks! Are you going to review the sub driver or the pocket rocket? How about some Roberts surfboards?

Stoked you like the show! I am more back footed / Neutral as opposed to front footed. Both the Driver and Fever are mental... you cant go wrong with either. I would build a quiver around both of these two models.

can you talk about the rails?

The rails on the Driver have a medium volume from nose to tail. They are relatively soft and forgiving too.

I like what you said about building a quiver from this model, or any model, would make it easier to go from the groveler to shortboard.
