Great review. Really enjoyed watching. Hard to say but what size would you recommend for a 51 year old, 5'10, ~155# guy who is getting back into surfing after a 5 year lay off to raise kids and other things. My last bigger Short board is a 6'6" Pancho Sullivan Surf Tech. There wasn't even a volume displacement value when I last bought a new board. I could not catch a wave on that thing in my last two outings but hope to be able to once I get back into surfing shape. Got an older second hand fishy hybrid board that measures 6'8"" x 21"x 3 3/4"with glassed on fins that floated like a log and was fun but did not like the steeper takeoff. I would like something with less volume but still fun as an everyday board. I was thinking about the 5'10" or so. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Hey, I’m 5’11 and weigh 155 lbs. I’m a beginner surfer who surfs in Santa Cruz and want to use this as an all around board. I currently ride a 6’0 35 L lost v3 stealth. Should I go with the 5’10 35 L or the 5’8 32 L. I’m not a technical surfer just a guy who has fun and likes to go down the line and up and down from rail to rail. Thanks! This would be super helpful if you can give me the size.

PLEASE talk about the weight of these boards.. just got a libtech board and was surprised how heavy it was... just bought a 6'2(pudfish) libtech board and it is way heavier than expected..(9.5lbs after the tailpad added ugg) i def expected it to be way lighter based on your libtech vids

Hey thanks for the review. I am an average ability surfer but a below avg paddler. I am 6ft tall and 225 lbs. I was considering this board in the 6'2. I am trying to step off of my 9 ft long board and onto something with more performance while still giving me the ability to more easily paddle into waves. Curious what you think of this board for someone like me. Any other boards, and sizes You could recommend would be appreciated.

Hey Nslo, the RNF Redux is a good board but requires more powerful waves and precise foot placement than some other ...Lost Surfboards. I’m 5’10”, 157. I surf a stock 5’9” lib tech puddle jumper, 37.65 liters or thereabouts.
Real guys told me RNF would not be redundant and would be a blast!
Would the 5’10” work at around 35 liters, or should I go 5’8” model?
I don’t have a real shortboard for comparison. Thanks!

Hey Paul, If the smallest board you have surfed is the Puddle Jumper, go for the 5'10. The 5'8 is a volume you will likely be able to surf if you keep progressing on short boards but jumping from 37.6L down to 31.5 will be a drastic change that would likely be frustrating.

Can you explain the reason behind your statement that "it's easier if you go lower volume"? I've never had a lower volume board paddle into waves better than a higher volume board and I'm just curious if you could expand on that. I'd like to get one of these for my own xmas gift. 37L boards get tiring for me to paddle but 39L boards feel good. Thanks. Best surfboard reviews on the internet!

Thanks CCrider for your question. It’s a good one!

Some boards ride significantly better at lower volumes. High performance shortboards come to mind as the most obvious ones, as these designs have concave bottoms and are not designed to be surfed over-foamed.

Our experience with the Lost Round Nose Fish, all species, is that they like to be surfed at your high performance shortboard volume or maybe a touch above. If you surf them at this volume, they paddle relatively easily, have a loose feel on the wave and better glide than shortboards.

Where these boards don’t work as well is if you size them at your grovel volume or higher. If you are looking at sizing the RNF at these volumes, you’d be better off with other Lost boards like the Puddle Jumpers for groveling, or LazyBoy/EZUP for volumes higher than grovel size. In our experience, the RNFs don’t perform well with all that extra foam and plow through the water when paddling/catching waves, making the extra volume more difficult to surf rather than less difficult like on most boards.

Hi there, on the ...Lost website it says that the stock dims of the RNF Redux have been changed/reduced for "boards made after 10/1/2017". In particular the 5'11 (for which I am interested), has now 0.5 lt less volume, albeit the same length, width, and thickness. Any idea about the reason for this change. Thanks

The changes in stock dims often come from repeat custom requests. In this situation, Matt Biolas kept getting requests for thinner rails so he modified the stock boards to better reflect what the people want to surf.

FCS2 fins fit the boxes in my newer lib techs, but they sit half an inch further back than intended by the shaper. Do you think this affects performance?

Hey Andreas, it does affect performance, it makes the board require more effort to turn and your foot needs to be further back on the tail.

Nice to see this review, as I've been curious about this board for awhile. Really like the idea of an all-around board that is durable and surfs well. I'm 185 pounds, 6'4", surf in the PNW (5 mm full suit), age mid-40s, intermediate-ish ability. I currently own a 39 litre 6'3" Rusty Smoothie , and a 40.5 litre 6'2" CI Pod Mod. Both good boards. Was thinking of the 6'0" RNF Lib Tech. Thoughts? Thanks.

Your sizing is spot on, it'l paddle better than the smoothie even at the same volume because the foam is more condensed.. The RNF Redux works in a huge range and Lib Tech construction is really strong while still retaining a similar feel to a PU/Poly.
