I have had a V3 6'8" and it was sadly really difficult. It of course could be me, but I found it to be really hard to ride especially when I moved up to hit a lip and it lost all power and it left me hanging with no movement. Now, I love Mayhem boards and have ridden them exclusively since the 90s and loved all of them and always buy them from the Catalyst store. The best board I have ever road was the WCT and I have had the RNF Fish, Uber Plank, RV which is fantastic, the Sub Driver , Mini Driver and the Sub Driver. All great. I blame me. Why am I having so much trouble with the V3? That is the question. Please help me figure it out as I have tried so many different fin configurations yet it seems to so work against me. I simply cannot get the board to work for me, Help?

I’ve not found a lot online about what fins go best in this board and have experimented with a few setups and thought I’d share.
Mine’s a 6’2” and ride it mainly in 3ft to 6ft. Didn’t find it so good for grovelling and a bit loose over 6ft for me.
Obviously everyone will have their own personal preference but for me, firstly, I found this better as a thruster than a quad. I’ve run am1 blackstix... a little loose for me and the board is super fast on decent waves so wanted something with a little more control. Ran F8s which were okay but didn’t make me love the board still and so left it on the rack and opted for other boards instead. Then I ran it will large JJF fins and, for me, it was a perfect blend of control and looseness. Hope that’s at least helpful to someone.

I have a stock 6’-2” Rocket that’s 39 liters and it’s not been what I expected.  I have a few lost surfboardsand really like lost but for some reason I don’t really like my V3 Rocket.  I thought I would be able to ride it in everything from knee to a few feet over head and I have found that the board only performs in shoulder high and above.  I guess the only reason I’m real disappointment in this board is because I thought it would be an everyday board and it's now become my step-up board.  I think the V3 Rocket is kind of like the Hypto Krypto in the sense that it is really meant to be ridden shorter than you are tall which is hard for me because I’m a bigger guy.  The V3 would probably be better for a smaller dude that could ride it as a 5’-9” or shorter.

I’m an intermediate to advance surfer with 15+ years of surfing. I’m 37 years old, 5’9” and 205 pounds, 212 with a wetsuite on, and ride 36L to 40L. I got the V3 Rocket to replace my old everyday board the Sub Scorcher 2. I’m riding the V3 Rocket as a custom 6’2” (39L) and I have found that it’s more of a step up board. I need a wave that is head high or bigger and breaking more top to bottom for this board to really work well. I surf in SoCal and this board is probably only surfed maybe 30% of the time on the top end of the good surf range. The Sub Scorcher 2 is a better everyday board in my opinion.

Hey! so i got this hard in 6'1, really liking it overall, especially in quad, i surf Manly and in summer it can be very small and sometimes mushy, poor sections, and i can t manage to get good sections when it s like 1 foot, i lose speed too quick and i m still a beginner / intermidaire surfer so my technique doesn't help. I m looking at having a retro fish twin fin for those days ! Do you think it s worth it ? or i should be able to surf those mushy small days with the LOST ( So i m just not good enough at the moment). Would be very helpful !! Thanks !

Hi, tried the new Lost Puddle Fish yet? Looking forward to watching your review on this board. Who is it for? Can a surfer coming down from a minimal learn to trim on this board? How stable and how forgiving is it to beginners? What type of waves is it best for and what surfboard is the closest to it it terms of stability and ride? thanks! :)

V3 rocket is the best board I've had, if it does break or snap, I'm getting another but going to put channels in it. Love the review, actually bought this board from the review, fast responsive and fun to paddle. If your thinking about one, go to lost surfboards, use the volume calculator an dial in your new sled. This is one happy customer

Another must have in the quiver. In chest to few feet overhead, the V3 rocket works like a charm. I like that it has volume forward, and feels meaty under the chest. It's a hybrid shortboard that allows older guys like me to rip.

Hi great review chears.
I am a 5'8'' 160 lb (72kg) advanced surfer in above average shape and i am looking for a board to fit my quiver in between my fish and HP shortboard (to replace my CI new flyer).
I usually ride 25-26 L boards and want to add a little volume and thinking about a 5'6'' V3 rocket for small to medium days.
I never rode any of the rocket family and wanted to know what you think and if the V3 rocket will fit my quiver as I hope ?
thanks a lot

thanks for the great response.
How would you compare the V3 rocket to the Chilly rare bird ?
and what would you say is the buoyancy difference between same board in PU and EPS or the new Epoxy tech (for example a 5'6'' pu V3 vs. a 5'6'' carbon wrap or eps V3)?
thanks a lot

Hey David, it's hard not to recommend this board...it's loved by so so so many and, given your description, I think a V3 will fit very nicely in your quiver! Note, I think you will find this board much faster (and flatter) than your New Flyer

I'm an intermediate, 145# surfer, got this in 5'6" stock dims (19.25"W x 2.32"T). I should've got in 19" W x 2.25"T, with a bit more nose rocker. It's a sick board , super fast, turns incredible, but doesn't take steep/late drops as good as some other boards. This board is fast as hell as a quad, rides sick both as a quad and thruster. Definitely get a 5-fin!!

Rode in double overhead Honolua as a thruster and handled like a dream. Stable, easy turns, super fast : )
Awesome even on waist high days as a quad.

Hi benny,

Great review! I'm currently looking at 2 boards. The rare bird and the lost V3, what would you recommend? I'm currently riding the lost Rv for the small Sydney summer surf but am looking at something that I can get on its rails. I'm around 87kgs & 6'3 tall. I generally surf short board that are 5'11 or 6'0 ft long. What's the major difference between the rare bird and the v3? And what do you reckon would suit me best for Sydney northern bleachers surf?

Regards.

Hey Benny...Im a Fl surfer and my everyday board is similar to the grocket 5'10' (performance fish). Im an average surfer but I'm looking for a travel board for trips to Nica and PR...My question for you is I'm looking for a board to travel with and use in some decent surf, but nothing more than a few feet overhead. Do you think the V3 would be a good board for some traveling to better waves and still be decent back in shitty FL surf? My only concern is size (im 5'9' 175). I wont to avoid as much redundancy as possible (but some is inevitable) so If I were to get a 5'9'' V3, do you think it would still perform in the headhigh surf when I travel? thanks for any input--Scott

Hi Benny. Based on your review and what waves I surf I've decided to order myself a V3 Rocket but undecided on what size to get. I'm 5'8" and 66kg (145lbs), 44 years old and an average/intermediate surfer. I've only recently discovered what a difference the volume of a board can make. I would say I'm above average fitness for my age but only get to surf once a week if I'm lucky. I got a 6'0 Fred Rubble a few months ago which is 28.6 L and feels pretty good but still not sure if it has enough volume or too much. Based on that I was thinking a 5'8" V3 at 29 L but would love to hear your thoughts on this.
Love the show.
Cheers, Warren.

Hey Benny, Im kinda undecided I travel around alot but back at home (Portugal)  I mostly surf in mushy surf, not that big, something like from 0.5 -2 mt.
I would like to get a board that is very responsive and still can handle small and mushy surf...
I was looking at CI number 4 and lost v3 Rockt...
Which one do you suggest? Or any other...

P.S: I have a C.I  Semi Pro 12  6,1 for better waves

Really appreciate your thoughts! Keep up the good show!

Hey Benny, We met a few weeks back in Mex! We were both enjoying some post surf street tacos and tequila with our friends- one of your buddies had just been married. The swell was amazing that weekend and I'm pumped we bumped into each other! I let you know that I was surfing a recently purchased Lost RV (partially persuaded by your review). It was the perfect board for that swell.

Quick question: What is the best way to custom order a new Lost V3? I want to get a board that has less volume and more agility. The V3 looks like a winner. I look on their website but don't see a phone number?

Thanks man.

Benny, I have a Lost Rocket Original. I love it. Really love it. Surf it in everything but do notice that it's not so good in double overhead. I have been thinking of a either the Hypto Krypto or the V3. I really like the idea of multiple fin setup sin the V3. What are your thoughts between them for versatility?. How different does the V3 surf to the original Rocket? I surf NSW South Coast Australia.

@Terence Ingram Hi Terence, I find the V3 to be more competent vs. the original Lost Rocket in bigger, better waves but it's still tons of fun in smaller surf, too. Surfed flat faced, chest high GI and solid overhead Bendalong on mine and it was awesome!

CompareSurfboards.com

Hi N8Surf, it depends on the conditions you will surf most but I always like to have a little bit of extra paddle power vs. not enough. That said, the V3 is a great paddler for a given volume
Brooks Perry
Brooks Perry - 10 years ago
Benny,

Just had my first session on the 5'6" (stock) V3 Rocket today as a thruster in peaky, somewhat sloppy high-tide El Porto. Paddled really well and felt really responsive, but I need to get a couple more sessions in to really feel it out. Definitely looser and more high performance than my 5'7" Motorboat (which I love as a groveler, but takes more effort to turn). I also have a 5'10" Whip that I've loved for average+ surf up to a few feet overhead, but I'm kind of trying to bridge the gap btwn the Whip and the Motorboat. I keep looking at the #4 and this V3 and while they have a similar outline, the contours and rockers are very different.

The V3 is actually a buddy's board and I'm considering buying it (brand new, just not enough volume for him), but I have yet to get on the #4 and I'm really curious to ride it before committing.

1. What are the key differences between the #4 and the V3?
2. If you had to choose one board for all-around Cali surf, primarily ranging from the South Bay to Malibu to Ventura, which of these would you go with?

Kick-ass show, thanks so much for all the insight!

@CompareSurfboards.com Thanks Benny! I ended up going with the V3 anyway because I couldn't pass it up for the price my buddy gave me. Haven't been able to surf it yet in anything over 2 feet, but the forecast looks a little more hopeful for the coming weekend. Cheers.

Hi Brooks, thanks for the great question.I dig both of these boards - they both handle a bit of size and power but paddle well and are tons of fun in smaller surf, too. I feel the V3 has a smoother ride overall across wave heights so that would be my pick.I hope this helps you!All the best,Benny

Great review!!! Newer at surfing probably just getting to the intermediate stage. im 6' 175ish was riding a 6'2 × 21× 2 3/4 JS rock and roll that was great for getting my wave count up and technic down by paddling earlier into waves. Started craving a little more Vertical response and maneuverability. So after extensive research most notably influenced by your review. I decided to pick up a 6'0 V3 as well as the FCS 2 Lost mayhem tri/quad fins and use as a step up board for me. Now I'm broke as Sh#% !!!! I was a little concerned about the smaller dims and losing wave count and paddle ability. Not even an issue in fact might even paddle better! This board did exactly what I was looking for! Almost feels like cheating!

Thanks for the sound review!

Hey Benny,

I live in NY and surf mostly beach breaks but occasionally will surf some points/reef breaks

I want a board that will perform well when we get some heavy overhead barrels, but that I can also paddle out with and have some fun when its waist high. I am 5'11 and weigh 155lbs.

Could you recommend a good dimension for me for this board?
CompareSurfboards.com
CompareSurfboards.com - 10 years ago
Hi Nick, have you read this guide on sizing: http://bit.ly/knowyourvolume
It should help you with dimensions.

Also, you will always make tradeoffs with one board covering waist high up to heavy overhead barrels but the V3 Rocket is one of the best all rounders out there in my opinion.

Cheers,
Benny

Great review -- it was an major influence for me to buy a stock 6'2" off the showroom floor. I surf in central FL, and have been using it all conditions with good results, but, I have had bad results as a quad, only good as a thruster (MF1 so far my favorite fins with it). Anyone have similar results, or quad suggestions for this size V3? I tried MF1 and PC7 Bamboo with FCS2 Performer trailer, and FCS2 MB so far.

I agree with other comments about rail thickness -- that almost stopped me from buying it when feeling the 6'1" and 6'2", but I like 6'2" boards. I am considering ordering a 6'2" with the 6'1" thickness, or thin out the 6'2" rails.

Cheers!

Benny, tuff question: Rocket V3 or Rare bird? The goal is to be the main board, I usually surf beach breaks, knee to head high, mostly flat, but with some hollow days.
CompareSurfboards.com
CompareSurfboards.com - 10 years ago
Hi Dudamir,

This is a very tough question! The Chilli Rare Bird and Lost V3 Rocket are both great boards. Both very versatile, fast and fun to ride.

While they will both handle a broad range of wave sizes and conditions, in my experience, the Rare Bird worked better at the smaller end of the range (say, waist to head high) while the V3 Rocket could handle more solid, powerful waves. Simply put, I would take the V3 Rocket to Indonesia as a step-down board but I wouldn't take the Rare Bird.

I hope this helps you!

All the best,
Benny

I don't (can't) do airs so I don't know if I'm qualified to answer your question but, based on my experience, I wouldn't take the Hypto to Indo - I find it really fun, fast and playful but worked best for me in smaller, less powerful waves.  Whereas I would take the new V3 Rocket to Indo and surf it in bigger, more powerful waves.

I hope this helps you!

Cheers,
Benny

What size V3 do you ride? And do you mind if I ask your weight? Thanks for your review.

Hi Chris, I don't mind at all - I am 110kg's and I am riding a 6'4 V3 Rocket.  In the past, I have gone for the 6'2 but I'm not finding much downside going bigger.

Thanks for watching!

All the best,
Benny

How does it compare to the SPV?

Hi Fred,

Thanks for your question!

While I find they share a similar wave range, the feel of these two boards is quite different.  Overall, I find the SPV fast, precise and good for technical surfing - probably suited for more advanced surfers.  The SPV

The V3 Rocket works effortlessly in a broad wave range but is slightly more forgiving.

I hope this helps you!

Cheers,
Benny
