The extra volume would definitely help keep you out of the water adding some paddle power, and help you get into waves earlier

The Black Box II is more of a traditional shortboard with a central mid point, narrower nose, narrower tail, and more rocker. If you are targeting the same volume you would end up on a longer black box. The Black Box will make more radical turns and surfs more top to bottom while the V3 rocket makes more carving turns, The v3 Rocket builds speed well on its own while the Black Box II is easier to build speed through turns

Here are two sets of dimensions to compare:
V3 Rocket
5’10″ x 20 x 2.5″ | 32.97

Black Box II
5'10" x 19.75" x 2.375" | 29.00

I’m an intermediate to advance surfer with 15+ years of surfing. I’m 37 years old, 5’9” and 205 pounds, 212 with a wetsuite on, and ride 36L to 40L. I got the V3 Rocket to replace my old everyday board the Sub Scorcher 2. I’m riding the V3 Rocket as a custom 6’2” (39L) and I have found that it’s more of a step up board. I need a wave that is head high or bigger and breaking more top to bottom for this board to really work well. I surf in SoCal and this board is probably only surfed maybe 30% of the time on the top end of the good surf range. The Sub Scorcher 2 is a better everyday board in my opinion.

+kos 21 thanks for your question. Something 36-38L volume should help you overcome this difficulty. 32L is pretty low volume for someone your skill level and body weight (for reference, I am 180lbs advanced and ride most of my "everyday" boards around 30-31.5L, a little generous for my weight but not by much...)

V3 Rocket has a low entry rocker and just makes surfing easier, yet has enough performance to help you keep progressing trying new turns and new things.

That 36-38L volume would put you on a 6'2" V3 Rocket but that would be a custom order board right now. You can get that same volume and a really similar shape in the newer ...Lost Short Round, would still be looking at a 6'2". You can order that board at this link: realwatersports.com/surfing/surfboards/lost/short-round

You can contact us by phone 252-987-6000 or online at realwatersports.com/contact .

I'm an intermediate, 145# surfer, got this in 5'6" stock dims (19.25"W x 2.32"T). I should've got in 19" W x 2.25"T, with a bit more nose rocker. It's a sick board , super fast, turns incredible, but doesn't take steep/late drops as good as some other boards. This board is fast as hell as a quad, rides sick both as a quad and thruster. Definitely get a 5-fin!!

Rode in double overhead Honolua as a thruster and handled like a dream. Stable, easy turns, super fast : )
Awesome even on waist high days as a quad.

@surferdjnj  Thanks for your question!  The V3 Rocket is very versatile and you'd probably have a great time surfing it.... it paddles great but still turns tight in the pocket, and you could get the same volume as your Byrne by riding a 5'10"-6'0" V3.

The V3 Rocket, like all other rocket series boards, has a flatter entry rocker and then a good amount of rocker in the tail.  This added tail kick means the board can be surfed aggressively off the tail when you want to do a cutback etc.   If you're super heavy on the back foot all the time, you might want something with a flatter tail rocker, to keep you in trim and prevent you from plowing the board through the water.

The ...Lost "Driver" series is the reverse rocker pattern from the Rocket series... the Drivers are flatter tail rocker with more entry rocker.  For you I suggest looking at a 6'1" Mini-Driver, that has great volume, flatter tail rocker, and, based on my experience, it fits nicely in an East Coast barrel.  Board does really well in smaller waves too, it will surf anything until it's time to pull out the groveler.   http://www.realwatersports.com/surfing/surfboards/lost/mini-driver

Hope this helps! -Chris @REAL Watersports

Hey Drake, give us a call (252)987-6000 or drop us an email realpro@realwatersports.com so we can discus your surfing in more detail and figure out the right board for you. The Sub Buggy is definitely a good board but it would be good to know more about your surfing to determine if it is right for you and the waves you are riding.

Lost Sub Buggy From PU/Poly 5'0" do you think this is a good board? I'm currently riding a 5'7 but I would like something smaller?

Hey Drake, Thanks for writing in. We a great selection of boards for young rippers like yourself, check out our grom section of boards http://www.realwatersports.com/surfing/surfboards/grom As for the size recommendation, it will help to know what other boards you have been riding but based off volume calculations a board around 18-20 liters should be a good size for a surfer your weight who is good at catching waves, and building speed. For your fins, Lost makes a signature series fin, that is sized down to your weight range in both Future's and FCS depending on what style fin boxes your board uses. Check out the Futures version here http://www.realwatersports.com/futures-lost-grom-honeycomb-tri-fin-set-tri-color I am glad to hear you are starting to blast airs! Keep surfing, keep up the stoke, and get in the water as much as you can! - Ashlon Durham

Hey I have a question I'm 12 years old and I'm starting to practice my first ariels and airs. What type of board. What size of board, and what volume type board should I get. I am 80 pounds and 4,10. my favourite company is Lost and i know fins are also a big factor. I like shapers fins and was wondering if u can help me out.

Thanks,

Hey guys, I have a question. East Coast surfer here and I need a board that I can surf on my back foot or neutral. Bad front knee and can't get good drive off (weight on) my front foot anymore. I ride a 6'4" Byrne MB pill at 33.5 CL. Love that board but really want to try a LOST. Would you consider this board a neutral or back foot board?

HEY Trip - show us your garage and which boards have been a keeper. That would be an interesting thing to see; from someone who can buy any board/s and sell them 2nd hand through your shop. Which are the boards that will stay for you 4 ever.....? that would be a testament to a good board.

Hey, thanks for sharing. It's always nice to get a more technical perspective now that i'm trying to pay more attention to surfboard design. I have been riding one of these as a quad and a tri fin set up for about a month now and the board feels good, like you said it really can feel good in the pocket but i've been finding that it doesn't like cutbacks in flat sections of the wave. It tends to bog or stick. Any suggestions? and have you heard anyone else saying the same?
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 10 years ago
This is isn't something we've experienced Bruce but everyone surfs differently! Perhaps you could try putting some larger fins in - might create more lift and give you some more drive. Feel free to give us a call or email us at realpro@realwatersports.com if you want more info!

REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 10 years ago
Hey @tommy hsu - stoked you grabbed the v3 rocket - what an amazing board! We recommend MD fins for you and you should go for a tri/quad set for sure. The V2 rocket only worked well as a tri but the v3 (which you have) works as both a tri and a quad so you can mix it up to keep things awesome!
