The German 'E' boats had diesel engines and I think this made them, I should imagen, a bit less risky.

What a marvellous job on the restauration of this magnificent boat! Too bad the original engines could not be restored, but imho that is compensated for by the sound of the turbo diesels and the increased safty that comes along with that.
Can't wait to see it perform as the backdrop for a WWII epic film about the young men that went to war in boats like this and th MTBs.

Here in the USA a similar boat , A PT boat was restored and they installed real .50 caliber brownings and a real 20 mm oerlikon cannon all demilitarized but teal nonetheless why cant they do that in england ?
I do believe the US NAVY PT 689 still retains its three packard v12 aircraft engines which is fortunate

UK law doesn't allow real guns to be used. It's not a museum piece, it's a demonstration craft.
In my country you couldn't even get away with the replicas they are using on that one. The presenter said something about the owner being the Portsmouth Naval Base, I guess that's how they can use the replicas they have. But unless it's a commissioned Royal Naval vessel, no guns.

Same designer made both boats. The 109 is a 80 foot version of the Original 77 foot boats. The UK prototype was 70ft. Electric Boat company then Americanized the Paine design into the PT.

Don't think you got the guns usages right. Let alone Oerlikons are cannons, not machine guns. Those were your AA guns. And the Lewis guns weren't AA, they were anti personnel. You couldn't hit or do shit with those Lewis guns on such a platform. Not reliably.

Here's what a geek I am. I start watching a video about a WW2 Motor Gun Boat and my eye is drawn to the boat in the next dock. Why, I say to myself, that looks like a twelve meter with a cabin on it. It seems that it is Sceptre, the failed 1958 challenger for the America's cup. Who the hell would notice something like that? Only a complete boat geek. Oh, and the MGB is massively cool, too.

I imagine you'd run the center engine only for normal cruising, and the outers for slow speed maneuvering. Undoubtedly the diesel replacement has significantly increased fuel economy; been a while since I've seen the numbers but original gas (petrol) PT boats used a positively Enormous amount of fuel. Totally impractical for any sort of recreational use. One centerline 800HP diesel ought to be plenty for a nice easy 13-15kts until you want to show off with all three.

I remember the initial restoration of this boat back in the late 80s by Guy and Art Webster, who if I remember correctly rescued it from being a rotting run down houseboat!. A significant amount of the plywood hull was replaced then and I believe the intention at that time was to fit outdrives, whether that was ever completed I don't know. Good to see her still going though.

it was a bad presentation of the boat, I did not realize very well how the boat is, one thing I understood ..... @Adrian Larkins Dude, be reasonable. The parts and companies are long gone. They use pricey avgas to run on. Most have bee long since used up by boat racers decades ago. Airplanes are the same way. Pratt & Whitney stopped making radial engines decades ago. That is why turboprops are used so much.

I'm just happy that all the structural work has been done and the hull is not rotting. Sorting that that out would have been an enormous undertaking.
You can put the original engines in anytime you want. It becomes a bit difficult to do if the boat is sunk or scrapped. Which is a fate most of these boats have suffered. The maintenance and upkeep of these boats is mind-boggling.

Go for industrial grade crap, don't outsource unnecessarily easy tasks to "professionals" and you are at like 500 grand tops with slightly de-tuned oem powerplants.

I don't know about UK gun law, but machining a replica or getting a demilitarized thing shouldn't be impossible. I really hope it's a work in progress and the diesels are just placeholders.
Efoxx ok
Efoxx ok - 5 years ago
Adrian Tallpoppy so Packard Merlins runs about $1million in needs overhaul condition, and overhauls would add another $150k each. That ups the cost over 3.4million right there.
And I'm pretty sure 3" deck guns aren't just lying around, or even legal to buy, sell, or own. Not to mention the tons of weight they add.
I'm sure YOU have those kind of resources lying around, so why don't you contact the owner and offer your services.

I was the coxswain of the Last 'D' Long Boat (110 feet) Gun Boat based at HHS Hornet until it's closure in 1956. There were four long boats in our squadron, I was also the squadron diver. We lived on board, I had toilet in the sick bay which doubled as my cabin. Our engines were four high octane Packard (US) petrol engines - (Rolls Royce) UK onward.
The only other craft at HMS Hornet during that time was the MTB (Short Boats) they did not live aboard
at the time.

i always considered it a privilege to have been selected, we enjoyed a faultless camaraderie.

People who want to know how these things were used should read "The Battle of the Narrow Seas" by Sir Peter Scott. Funny what he was doing before he was famous for bird watching. Double diagonal mahogany and 100 octane fighter fuel. Brilliant combination. I am glad they have put decent engines in her, if I was rich I'd have donated them myself.

My friend John MacDonald from the Back of Kepoch, Arisaig, Invernesshire was on minesweepers in the channel in WWII, he thinks he was 14 when he joined the RN when they called up his fishing boat. He wasn't seeking trouble the way these guys were, but he was out in the same sea at the same time. Reading the book gave me a different view of the quiet old lobster fisherman I knew.

My father was with Air Sea Rescue during the war based on the Hamble and also on the Gold Coast.. He was on a number of converted MTB's picking up either sailors or airmen. He used to say that flat out they could just nudge 50mph.

Small correction, the refit didn't replace the Packards, they went decades ago! During her restoration over 10 years ago, she was fitted with MAN diesels.

I actually started weeping about 10 seconds into this when I realized what it was. Been following the rebuild at Berthon. If anyone is interested I highly recommend Adrian Rance's Fast Boats and Flying Boats. It's the story of Hubert Scott-Paine and the British Power Boat Company. Just a fascinating story.

As you say, magnificent! A great tribute to the sailors of the day. So very grateful that this superb restoration has been carried out and I very much look forward to seeing her out and about in the Solent. Well done and thank you, to everyone concerned!

Dont you just. Pity the powers thst be betrayed the UK and sold it out to the EU. Now 17M voted leave and the powers once again are trying to sell the people out. I for one would be very annoyed to have my head blown off in 1943 for this shite.

the 110ft patrol boat I served on clutched in at 12 kts. Meant a lot of single engine ops or clutch in / out when entering crowded harbors.

+MotorBoat&Yachting,
Hello guys? Awesome video. As you have reviewed Scandinavian boats in the past, I hope you can take a trip Sweden? They have The Veterans Flotilla at Ystad. They have one MTB with Italian engines(diesel) and they are twin 5,000hp each!!! yes 5,000 horse power EACH!!!
It is capable of 50knots +!!!!
It would be great if you could review it as a comparison. We must keep the history of the last 70 years alive.
Many Thanks
