Majestic 530 Review. We love this boat. Everything we would want in a live-aboard sailboat.

In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we continue our series where we are checking out the Catamarans at the Annapolis Sailboat Show to see what we think would suit us as a full-time live-aboard catamaran as we circumnavigate the globe. This episode we cover the Majestic 530. This boat is clearly built for the live-aboard as everything you would need to live is built in and included for a reasonable price. To us, it feels like this boat is the "best bang for the buck" in the Catamaran market but at 53' it may be just a bit too big for a cruising couple? Watch and see what you think. Hopefully, you enjoyed this episode. If so, give it a thumbs up, share the link with friends that might enjoy this content and subscribe so you don't miss any future episodes. You might be right. No boat is perfect. You have to take the good with the bad, I guess.

Yah, you can definitely see the owner's family situation in that layout. They have basically ceded the whole main deck to having a gaggle of teens running up and down all day, while the adults retreat up to the fly-deck with their own little snack/drink fridge and keep the kids out of the controls. Big galley because it's always big family meals. It's cool that Majestic is so flexible with owner designs and still finds places to sneak in storage etc.

Honestly, that layout is the most sensible for that family.

If they have 3 or 4 kids and the 2 parents, they need that living room area to congregate in.

I can't imagine young children in even smaller space than that one tbh.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 5 years ago
Yes. The previous years wood was perfect for us. The layout was more to our taste too. But I guess if I had kids running around I could see this new layout having some merit.

@Cruising Off Duty The woodwork is beautiful in the previous year model. Too bad he opted not to have wood cabinetry with that layout. I like his layout. It's what I would want for my family.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 5 years ago
Ya. Clearly he thought like you. Space for kids to run around. I heard after his passage he tried to sell it. I’m guessing that layout did not sell as well as the beautiful wood and layout from the 530 we saw the year before.

The galley so close to the rooms will stink the rooms with cooking smell, but the washer / dryer outside is a great idea since it lowers the amount of air pollution from drying clothes.

Ya, if we were being paid to do proper boat tours we would go into wireless mics etc to make it more professional. But at this point, no one is paying us and we are running and gunning at the show and filming pretty much every Cat at the show so the viewer feels like they have experienced coming to the show with us. Probably too many boats to do in such a short time. Next year we plan to only film boats we are seriously interested in and where we can find a knowledgable salesperson who can give us a guided tour.

The Majectic 530 has no interest because the portholes are too high, when you sit in the living room you don't see in front or on the sides, in the cockpit it's the same.

If you have to be standing up to control in front of you while sailing, a big advantage of the catamaran is lost.

So for me, catamaran badly thought.

Just wondering how much space you two need. You can only use one space at a time. Life is short, go for what you can afford. Janice is punching way above and mixing with too many rich people. Get real girl or find an old man who can give you what you want.

The wider a catamaran hull is relative to its length, the slower it will be. This cat looks like a really slow boat. If space and lots of room is a higher priority to you than speed, that's OK with me. If you want to claim that this fat, heavy boat is just as fast as a boat with low displacement and a low width per hull, I must object.

This is just another catamaran review that treats a big catamaran as though it were a furnished vacation cottage. If you plan to use it as a vacation cottage for a week or two a year, close to its home port, that's OK, but if you plan to actually sail offshore, this attitude is potentially fatal.

@Cruising Off Duty I agree that many condomarans have made ocean crosings, and even circumnavigations. It is those that add flying bridges that cause me real concern.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
I am agreeing that it won't be a fast cat. I also agree that a flybridge is not for us and that it will add unnecessary weight and raise the center of gravity. So if you are asking my opinion of it is a fast boat? No. Can the normal sports seat model, that we like, sail well enough to cross oceans in a respectable time? Yes. So I'm not agreeing that this "Condomaran" cannot do blue water crossings.
BenjaminFranklin99
BenjaminFranklin99 - 6 years ago
@Cruising Off Duty ? You just agreed with me, but made it sound as though you didn't. If you take a roomaran and then clap a flying bridge on top of it, who knows what the consequences might be? Obviously, you heighten the displacement, CG and the CE, as well as the windage amount and center of the windage, as well as lowering the sail area. These are not good things.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
I’ve spoken to a bunch of owners. It sails fine and has crossed oceans. It’s not going to win many sailing races but it sails respectably

Really the same boat we were on? I doubt that. They guy who owned it sounded like he had plans to sail a lot more. Who knows? If it is the same boat perhaps there are health issues. He had nothing but good things to say and if he hated the boat I am sure they would not have had the owner on the boat to possibly sabotage future sales. Perhaps Robert can clarify if he is reading this.

Thanks for sharing guys. Sorry not for me in either format. Taste is highly personal - for me so clunky and old fashioned looking. So cheap looking too but a million bucks - wow ! there was a 2014 Serie 5 Privilege (sport seat) recently for sale in Grenada for $899 USD inc. all blue water necessities. Entire galaxies apart in terms of finish/quality IMHO. Cheers.

Always open to hear someone else's opinion.  There is a new hull shape coming in the near future with Majestic.  Interior, we loved last years model, not this years, which was cut up strangely with a boring grey interior.  If a future Majestic had the new modern shaped hull and last year's interior it would be damn near perfect.  IOO.

I think the Majestic last year the Best for Cruising and a live aboard! The Hull Galley is nice but people around a Kitchen more fun! Great if you have kids! For me the Port aft cabin great for a giant pantry, spare parts and tools! I also think the Master cabin mid ships is nice!

hey guys. Always love the vids.. We are building the M53 in about 3 years. We will NOT be doing the flybridge. WAY too much for the upgrade and Im not excited about the flow. But it works for the guy who built it and his kids who are young. Royal Cape is an awesome company to work with. We have friends who built one in South Africa and cannot say enough positive about this tank. Comfort yes! Points like a J class....Um not so much. But it is a massive condo big enough for all the creature comforts and lots of friends. We love the customization and the "All inclusive" no bs pricing. We keep trying to talk ourselves int o a FP or Bavaria etc.. But we always come back to the M53. BTW Im the guy who yelled "Hey cruising off duty" 2 years ago while standing on the Lagoon at the Annapolis show .. Keep up the good content.

Thinking of buying a cruising cat myself (just need a wife like yours). You would do a great service by going beyond the storage capacity and cosmetics. Do they all come with Yanmars? Should you spec a Volvo or some other make? Is engine noise a problem when they are mounted underneath the stern beds? In mast furling? What's the optimal genset/solar/wind generator combo? Hydro gen? Best instrument package? From looking at other channels, seems the auto pilots are constantly going out. Overall, who has the best build quality. (Hint, Leopard.)

Although it is kind of fun to watch these clips of condomaran shopping, I keep hearing a clock ticking loudly in the background. Four or five years (even months or weeks) from now you could be (probably will be!) dealing with a whole new set of circumstances. I've got a neighbour just inches from retirement who got sick this year and now has been in the Queensway Carleton for six months. His spectacular "land yacht" diesel pusher rolling home he bought last year in anticipation of retiring is sitting in a Navan storage yard and he hasn't been able to meet his new puppy they adopted just before he went to the doctor to find out why he wasn't feeling great. My point is we have to live for today, enjoy what we have now and not defer our happiness for rainbows & unicorns in the future. It seems your "must haves" requirement list is skewed towards volume, high weight & drag, appearances & land(ish) living, while being on the water may be very different than what you think.

Buy a used, cheaper boat and go sooner rather than later. The beauty is OUTSIDE the boat, so don't worry about the wood-finished paneling & under-mount sink count. Boats are not a great investment, so I wouldn't take the proceeds of selling everything you own and placing the sucker bet you will be reaching the Marquesas in six or seven years. One of the reasons people sit at anchor endlessly is that a cruising yacht is a full time contortionist job constantly repairing & maintaining complex systems, while trying to find expensive obscure marine parts in places where they don't have Amazon, take out & cell service. Your mileage may vary and objects on the horizon are closer than they look.

I've delivered an M530 from Cape Town to Durban, great interior, etc. BUT, the mast (sail ) was quite frankly an afterthought on a motor cruiser. Her sail abilities are VERY LIMITED! Just take her for a test sail, before you make any final choice, I was very disappointed:-( We motored all the 900nm)

Well, 1 Mil later, I suspect they are motivated to convince themselves, it sails well! Also, I would beware the high C.O.G.; the guy on the fly bridge all-but-admits, it's a sketchy (I would say UNSAFE) decision. Compare to the Balance, or the Antares, which truly put safety first - especially the Antares, where the Naval Architects REFUSE to shift the balance, one inch off plan (bravo!). @Cruising Off Duty

Cruising Off Duty cool. I wonder how many of these boats are sailing around the world vs in a fixed spot like the Caribbean. If it has good seaworthiness and the speed is in the neighborhood of Lagoons then it’s a much better choice than a Lagoon.
Cruising Off Duty

Existing owners say it sails quite well. Its no speed demon obviously, but it sail respectably well. Its a long waterline so it will handle waves and chope well too.

I was at Annapolis last year (‘17) and clearly remember that (prior) boat but having sailed 5k ocean miles in both monos and cats I wondered how that size (displacement) boat would sail, handle, and maneuver in varied conditions. It was clearly spacious and that is certainly important to you. And I agree that it seems to be strong value for features. In any case, I’d love to see it performs under sail.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Well they keep sailing them to Annapolis from South Africa, so clearly they sail pretty well and can handle big ocean crossings. Speaking to existing owners they say it sails very well. It's not a race cat but it sails well for its girth.

50. comment for Majestic 530 Review. We love this boat. Everything we would want in a live-aboard sailboat.

Which one did you like better...this years or last?
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Majestic seems the best for comfort. But still out of our price range unless we got a good deal on a used one. The Maverick 440 that comes up in the next episode is probably our favourite and in our price range.

A lot of parties take place in the kitchen, so having the galley on the main deck is a plus, unless you hire servants a.k.a crew... ;-)

I do agree, last year's model is better, and that price tag for the flybridge makes even me reconsider... On the other hand - even more storage space...
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
We totally agree. Everyone tends to hand around near the kitchen. Janice wants to be able to make food or snack/drinks and still feel like she is part of the conversation, so we want an up galley. Last year's had it all the way we want it.

I can see why you love this cat so much there's little to complain about in any area. What I didn't see in this years model is a chart table / Nav station, I assume there is one just didn't see it, $500,000 more for the flybridge is, as you say, an awful lot of money to pay for this feature - a 50% increase wow. Perhaps in the future you could do some test sails of your favorites especially if you do a test sail as a potential liveaboard couple not just a hour or so in a bay a proper test.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Yes. A sail test of our favourite would be a good idea. We went out on a test sail of the X5 at the end of the show. Sadly it was a really low wind day. There did not seem to be a Nav station. This owner really changed things a lot. I guess he just wanted a big play area for his 4 girls.

Is that right? 450-500k more for the flybridge over the sport? Sure there isn’t an extra zero in those numbers?? Anyway, thanks for the videos!

@Cruising Off Duty The guy who owns the boat has a few youtube videos of him sailing it up. The flybridge actually looks reasonably accessible (one guy scrambles up from the bow really quickly). That said, the added swaying does not look like fun, especially with the way cats roll (or don't).

EDIT: Here's the video of them sailing in reasonably heavy seas:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88LwY8IAqhs&t=58s
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Well. They told me $1.45M. You heard the guy on the flybridge, that works for the company, confirm it to. He said "It's almost like a whole second boat".

I think that this specific boat is now on sale for 1.1 mil $ (huge price cut). See it here: https://www.yachtworld.co.uk/boats/2017/royal-cape-catamaran-majestic-530-flybridge-3240183/

P.S. If that's not it then it's its twin brother.

Cruising Off Duty the boat has identical layout and color scheme. Galley in the hull, same black countertops, same tiles, same covers for the girl room. Those are lots of coincidences to be a different one.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
It is another RC Majestic 530. But yes a flybridge. Asking $1,275,000 after a "Big Price Reduction". So I'd still go for a Sports seat version and start with a new one a $945,000. 5 years used version maybe we get around $600,000. Or less, if the boat market gets weak in a recession. Who knows?
Anton Ditt
Anton Ditt - 6 years ago
Yes the old one is way better.
I know your focus is the real estate, but you really should do some seriouse test sailing before buying a cat that weights 20 tonnes...ouch!
Anton Ditt
Anton Ditt - 6 years ago
It's just shocking for me <g> My current favorite is 8,5to@50ft...loaded to the waterline. Not for racing but for good day runs on little canvas, hence peace in mind.
But I really love that sort of fully protected helm, that you sadly can not really have on performance cats
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Of course. Window shopping now with a focus on comfort. When we are ready to whip out the check book, we will certainly do a lot more study and test sails of the boats we narrow down. These Majestics sail here from South Africa. From all accounts they sail quite well. They aren't going to beat a Outremer 5X in a race but, we don't care about that. We will be living in much more comfort with lots of room for guest crew for long passages, if we had the Majestic, at 1/2 the price.

This is a very practical design. I like the rubberized decks from a practical stand point. I am not a big fan of teak decks. Most teaks decks are too thin caulk lines are too narrow. The boards shift loosen over time. Teak decks become scored and weathered and breakdown. They become ruff on your feet and are expensive and time consuming to fix. teak decks needs to be maintained weekly. This design makes sense for a large family and ease of maintenance. I'll take ease of maintenance over the fancy wood any day.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
I agree. This rubber floor seems like a great option. We would never want real teak on our decks. WAY too much work to keep them looking nice. The rubberized fake wood looks like a nice option too.

Way less disappointments here comparing to that other boat when beautiful wood on it will get damaged and faded (and it certainly will!).
Сергей Канаццкий
Сергей Канаццкий - 6 years ago
Of course this finish will get damaged too. But since it didn't look "rich" from the beginning and it's way easier (and cheaper) to fix, there will be less disappointments )
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
I guess. But I have to wonder. The grey may not fade but I bet it will show cracks, scratches and scrapes much easier since it is a uniform mat finish. It's a personal choice. We like the wood better.
Donald Klarich
Donald Klarich - 6 years ago
That is the best boat you guys have ever been on. The gray/white looks great and modern. I know you like the wood but that is so old school. The layout on that boat for a family is great. It also has more than enough sinks to make you happy.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Ha Ha. Yes. Plenty of sinks if you count them all. haha. The interior finish is certainly a personal choice. It is nice to see this builder lets you decide to put whatever you want for the same price.

BenjaminFranklin99

When you have an engine in each hull, you have complete control over maneuvering under power. Put one engine in forward, and the other in reverse, and the boat will spin 360 degrees in place. What is the bow thruster for?
Cruising Off Duty

Thanks. Yes it is frustrating. We wish we could afford to go now. Waiting for my pension to vest. Otherwise, I am sure we would go now. Life is too short to wait, other than we need to survive while we sail the world and money does put food on the table.

I've seen some videos of Ooga Chaka before (I actually went searching for it, since this is the highly customized boat the owner of last year's Majestic was telling you about, for the family with the four daughters, and was intrigued). It's VERY different from last years, but I think in terms of being very specifically purpose built? This boat is an amazing indicator of the great amount of customization available.

@Cruising Off Duty I do believe the Maverick is less than the Majestic/Antares, I have watched some Maverick tours on Youtube, and I really like a lot about them. A Maverick 440 would be less in a lot of slip fees than the Majestic, ultimately. The Majestic, beautiful as it is, just seems soooo vast!
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Yes. We don't need 5 cabins to sleep in unless we decided to run a crewed charter business. So we'd convert a bedroom into an office and for storage. The Maverick and Antares are both nice boats. The Antares costs about the same as the Majestic, so it is hard to say I wouldn't still go for the Majestic with all the extra stuff you get for the same price.
Eva Greenwell
Eva Greenwell - 6 years ago
@Cruising Off DutyFor a couple, like yourselves, it would also be entirely possible they could convert one of those rooms into a full fledged workshop as well, which would probably work well for full time livaboards. Am really looking forward to the Maverick and Antares episodes coming up as well!
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Totally agree. It wouldn't be the finish or layout we would have chosen, but it does go to show you that Royal Cape will customize your interior in any way you want. Not many builders would do that without adding a lot of fees. If you wanted the Sport version for $945,000 but you asked them to turn a bedroom into and office or go from the standard 5 cabins to 4 bigger cabins, etc, they said they would do that at no additional cost. As long as you are not asking for extra stuff put in they will not change the price. That is very cool to have it custom to what the buyer wants. Rare in the industry.

Waiting for my pension to vest. If I went now I would have to pay a huge penalty to start drawing on it now. Plus in 4 years, our house will be paid off and that is a big chunk of where our money will come from to buy this boat. If I had another way of making good money, I guess we could go now and just not touch the pension until it vests, but I can't see any way to make the money I do now. Youtube ads is not going to pay me anything more than beer money. haha.

StormSignal it’s a big decision. I think they want to buy in 5 years. The boats they are showing would be used. I thank them for their due diligence. Many of us are in their position. They are getting really good at showing boats. Maybe future side job for them.
