Maverick 400 & 440 review. Our favourite boat under 45'. Everything you need at a reasonable price

In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we continue our series where we are checking out the Catamarans at the Annapolis Sailboat Show to see what we think would suit us as a full-time live-aboard catamaran as we circumnavigate the globe. This episode we cover the Maverick 400 and 440. This boat is clearly built for the live-aboard as everything you would need to live is built in and included for a reasonable price. It is the perfect size for a live-aboard couple and is our favourite boat under 45'. Watch and see what you think. Hopefully, you enjoyed this episode. If so, give it a thumbs up, share the link with friends that might enjoy this content and subscribe so you don't miss any future episodes. Cruising Off Duty How does it sail in choppy water? Light boats tend to bounce around alot. Any idea what the clearance is between the water and center hull?

I would go with the hybrid version with the Lifepo4 batteries. you can set the generator to automatically turn on at whatever voltage you want and turn off at another voltage. This system is much more efficient and uses less fuel for the same distance.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 5 years ago
I think by the time we are ready to buy the Hybrid version will be a bit cheaper (as LiPo batteries get cheaper) and that would be the route we would go for as well. I like the idea of all electric motors. Less maintenance.

I would like to see all the lines run to oversize wrenches right next to the helm station, for ease and safety during rough sea sailing.

Had to laugh atari's 10 year catamaran is close to a brand new Maverick with Maverick you're getting a way better boat because it's 10 years newer with technology atari's 10-year old used boat you're getting some pretty woodwork not even a close comparison love to be able to buy the new Maverick with the electric motors be a little bit green for this planet anyway couple more projects and I might be there thank you for presenting that opportunity to 4 people to help burn less fossil fuel you guys rock

It's a close toss up between the Mav 440 Hybrid and the Antares 44GS for us, both are great fully optioned live aboard and circumnav boats at a complete sailaway price..... and still reasonably priced even with our Aussie dollar
Maverick Schiering
Maverick Schiering - 5 years ago
Hi Shane, thank you for the kind words. At the moment we build a Maverick 440 for a couple in Qatar; this yacht will have standard diesel engines and Lithium-Ion batteries a combination we have done also in the past. This way you can enjoy all the benefits that Lithium-Ion batteries bring for your house systems and save budget on the Hybrid propulsion system.
Shane Villis
Shane Villis - 5 years ago
@Cruising Off Duty yeah the standard deisel is also an excellent choice I could go with
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 5 years ago
I agree that they would both be excellent options for a liveaboard and it is also that the price you see is with everything you would need, included. The Hybrid all electric Maverick would entice me because I love technology. I can't wait to see it at next years Annapolis Show. But with being in the cutting edge of any newer technology, is you always run the risk of 1) the technology not being as good as it is explained to be (ie the Lithium Ion batteries are not big enough or take forever to charge on solar to keep the boat going on electric for long enough and you end up running the diesel generators all the time so not really being a green alternative) . or 2) The technology gets way more advanced and cheaper in the future and you end up feeling like if you waited, you could have gotten something much better and not broken the bank to get it. At least with a Deisel engine, you know what you are getting because that technology has been around for 100 years so no surprises or disappointments will, most likely, happen. We think a Maverick 440 standard version may be something we would seriously consider, it would be cheaper too and diesel is sold everywhere and diesel mechanics can be found worldwide. Something goes wrong with you Lithium/electrical system in the middle of the South Pacific Islands? Probably a lot harder to fix or find parts for. Just a thought.

Ha Ha. Janice and her girlfriend called it that when we Chartered a Cat in the BVI and the name has just stuck with us. Absolutely love this boat I did really like the Antares 44 basically due to the woodwork and set up I feel this catamaran as close to the same set up with safety features for almost half the cost however I do agree the daybed is pretty much waste of space which would be a great spot for the navigation station get rid of the desk in and make it a little bit simpler with self tacking and a few other items so one person can manage this boat by themselves for extended. Of time love the video thank you for sharing

Nice looking boat with many well thought out features Hopefully they have improved their workmanship and Quality Control since just a few years ago. Below is a link to a 400 built in 2011 and it is in pretty poor shape. The survey is actually included in the listing and highlights poor craftsmanship.

http://www.boatersresources.com/boat-for-sale/2011--Used-485145

Maybe the boat above is just a one-off lemon, but boy does it have issues. Check out the videos in the listing above as well. They highlight an abundance of defects.

I agree that is a factor to consider.  If we were buying new.  But we expect to avoid some of those early years depreciation loss by buying a used Cat.  So if we find one that is a few years old we should be able to see if there are any issues by a proper survey before we buy whichever boat we end up going for.

@Cruising Off Duty - I went back and looked at the posting and also the write up that included email correspondence on multihulls4us.com (link below). I was unable to determine a hull number.

However, this was a brand new boat and the delivery turned out to be a piece of crap. The warranty work appears to be shoddy (look at the gaps pointed out in the videos). The guy finally just tossed in the towel and took a huge loss on the boat. Ask yourself - Do I want to buy a boat from a company that is known to leave customers holding the bag? Do I want to buy a brand new boat that won't pass survey?

Don't get me wrong, the boat you reviewed looked awesome. In fact, I recall that the guy showing it stated it had already sailed 10,000 miles. But... Do you want to do business with a company that is known for screwing over their customers? Not me; the risk is too high.

WOW, that is a lot of boat for 44 foot. The walk around you guys did on the X5 had me loving that boat. However for a Million two it was out of the budget. But this boat at seven hundred thousand and some it’s an excellent price. And the option of diesel hybrid with all that fuel capacity and water, indeed this is an ocean cruiser within budget. Thanks for the great video.

Super nice boat. That cockpit table though...
Maverick Schiering
Maverick Schiering - 6 years ago
There are a number of different cockpit tables available, you can find these on the builders' website following the link
https://www.maverick.life/decor
Scroll down to the section "Choose your own Cockpit layout"

The standard on Mavericks is to have a 6 - 8 person table that slides down on a pole for use & up again to be out of the way. Then on the side, there is another table for dining for 2-4 people. This has the advantage of an open cockpit when not using the large table & even if both tables are in use you can still easily walk to both sugar scoops and get in & out of the dinning seats.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Ya.  He did say there was an option to get one larger 6 person table instead of 2 little table with a space in the middle.  I am 100% sure I would opt for the 1 bigger table.  Nice that there is the bigger option.

I will take a longer vid every day, especially if you have a guide! Great job guys. On a side note I wonder what wind conditions have to be present in order to do 10 knots in ordre to get the "full" benefit of the regenerative power of the props? My wife loved the tub, they might be on to something and if that something helps me get into the voyaging community even better. Lol
Maverick Schiering
Maverick Schiering - 6 years ago
For the Hybrid at 6 knots sailing, you'll generate about 1kw of power per electric engine in hydro-regeneration mode i.e. 2kw in total. That is a lot. Normally you'll be sailing above this speed in most wind conditions.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Im sure with a decent breeze on a beam or broad reach, a cat like this could easily go 10+.   Janice loved the tub too.  Now,  it is not a super deep tub but still, the ladies do love to lay in tubs.  Whatever makes them happy, right?  :-)

I went on one of these five years ago in Annapolis, It is one of the ugliest cats I have seen and the boat at that time had a lot of design issues along with bad reviews. I will say that the redundancy systems and options are awesome and a lot of the systems are well thought out. But I will still say that it is still one of the ugliest cats out there. I would think that if they freshened up the design and kept the systems, they would have a massive winner. I would really like to see you do the St. Francis, and the Privilege.

While you are flerting with bigger boats due to the fact that you are gonna be living on the boat and it is always good with the extra space, just keep in mind that the bigger you go the most expensive the maintenance will be and the various fees under way. Many times this might limit your sailing experiences. Get a good size solid and sea worthy boat, as simple in maintenance as possible and allow money for repairements while you are under way. Many things that you might not fancy can be altered on a boat with small money in the future. No boat is perfect when you buy it. You make it YOUR boat after owning it for 2-3 years.

Hi Jim, hull #008 was repaired under warranty paid by the factory. Originally the yacht was launched in Cape Town in July 2011, sailed across the Atlantic and then sailed across the Pacific Ocean arriving in New Zealand where warranty repairs were conducted & paid for by the factory. This yacht was subsequently re-named Take Two by and the owner who sailed her from New Zealand to Australia spending time on the Great Barrier Reef, then onto Thailand and he is currently living aboard with his girlfriend in Malaysia - hopefully enjoying the Maverick Life.

Well I didn't show the full interview of the owner of the boat but he seemed exceedingly impressed with how his Cat handled the sail from South Africa to Annapolis so I have to assume that now they are on hull #21 on the 400 and who knows what hull number on the 440s, that the issue with Hull #8 is ancient history now.  Good builders are always improving their boats as issues arise.  You should always learn from your mistakes.

Totally agree.  This boat has moved to the top of our list now that we know all the redundancy and extra thoughtful features built in that I am sure are not there on any of the big mass production cats.

I really enjoy your videos. I’ve been a fan of FP cats. I’m not a big fan of the way this boat looks. However, the design and practicality of this boat is off the charts! Just the amount of hatches and the way they’re designed. Offsetting the hatches so they are not part of the walkway, brilliant! I’ve never thought (wannabe cat owner) about what a pain it would be to walk on the side of the boat with the hatches open. They solved that issue. All the redundancy with all the systems is wonderful! Also, the option to have electric motors with diesel as a backup is AMAZING! And the price of this boat that’s made to travel the world, unbelievable!

I really like what appears to be a lot of thoughtfulness put into the features on this boat. However... Seeing all the issues with Hull #8, and what appear to be structural design issues with the boat, with the claim that there are at least 4 other similar examples out there, it feels like putting your money down on a Maverick would be a big gamble. Do they still paint the interior instead of gel-coat?

JL H - 5 years ago
This is why I have gone and baught a 2010 Discovery 55 monohull sail boat in the UK instead as no they have a great reputation as a bluewater sail boat.I find a lot of catamarans look interior wise like flat pack furniture that you used to get from MFI in the UK and was then assembled by the village idiot however the quality of Maverick appears to be on par with my Discovery 55.

Hi Sam, thank you for expressing your concern - although this is not really a true or fair reflection of the builder. If you would like to read the whole truth & facts about hull #8 you can follow this link to the builder's Main website

Hi Craig & Janice. This is a wonderful compliment, especially coming from you knowing and viewing all the wonderful catamarans you have been on and made videos about. There is certainly is a lot of choice on the market. Thank you for considering Maverick as your possible #1 future home. We believe that the more clearly a person can crystallize their cruising agenda; the easier it will be to find the yacht to meet their agenda. You both have certainly done that – you are very clear about your agenda. The Maverick 440 AIR POWER that you saw at the Annapolis Boat Show last year - returned to Cape Town this week after completing their full circumnavigation. For me personally, I really love your dream. Take 10 Years to go around! Enjoy the time on the water. Enjoy what the world has to offer. Spend time in the Caribbean, take your time to see the South Pacific properly – to discover new places and see new things. It is an attitude to how to live & enjoy your life. Live the Maverick Dream. Live the Maverick Life.

You are very welcome Eric.  This show converted us.  We will not be considering a used big production Cat now that there are boats like this on the market at a reasonable price, that are built from the factory with full time cruising and live-aboard couple in mind.  #1 on our list as of now.

You know what?  I don't think I did stand in the tub this year.  But we did last year I believe.  It would be the same.  I recall it was fine.  I'm 6'0" so I wasn't hitting my head on the roof.  If you are taller than that, then perhaps you may need to bend a bit to get under the shower head.  But that should be expected for the really tall person.

Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Hey Robert!  Thanks for chiming in.  You, better than anyone, know what can be changed and it is clear that everything is at the owner's discretion.  That's the Benefit of a boutique builder that is willing to change things at the factory without expecting a ton more money.  Which is not the case with many of the big production builders.  Thanks again for the tour.  People seem to really like the video and nothing but positive comments on the boat.  Cheers!  Craig

Robert Schiering Moving the generator forward then how do you keep agitated air out of Sea chest or Sea cock? Use the Generator only at anchor? Just wondering.
Robert Schiering
Robert Schiering - 6 years ago
The daybed can be changed to a U-Shape saloon & storage area any day of the week. An alternative position for the generator is in the forward lasserett / outside locker - which is a good position for weight balancing close to mast and making more storage space in the owner's hull. The position of GenSet is the customers choice.

Hi, I really enjoy your ship tours. I think I learned a lesson from this one if I'm ever to make such an investment. This guy did a great job showing you around the vessel and as you stated at the end that you probably would have missed a lot if he wasn't there so I can only imagine what you may have missed on your other non escorted tours. Lesson learned, get a professional tour even if you aren't ready to buy now so you know exactly what you like and not like so much from all of these yachts.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Ya.  The floor colour is a personal choice of the owner.  I might have gone with something that matched the wood better myself as well.
NY Don
NY Don - 6 years ago
@Cruising Off Duty Very nice yacht indeed but the design from here seems that it was built more for speed than comfort which is what you're looking for. I liked the walkway outside of the raised hatches. What I did not like as much was the contrast from the light wood floor design and the oak like cabinetry in the salon. I know it can be personalized but those didn't seem to go together. Just my taste of course.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Thanks Don.  We did ask for tours when we were at the Lagoon booths and other big builders, but they said the sales people were busy dealing with other cus "real customers".  So we often did ask but go no attention.  The people letting people on the boat were really just hostesses and didn't have the knowledge to answer any detailed question other than referring to the brochure, which anyone could read online.  Other than the Lagoon 50 where the guy recognized us from our channel and took us on a guided tour, we were largely ignored or told to make an appointment and come back later to speak to a saleman with knowledge.  We had too many boats to film to wait around for appointments.  All the boutique builders saw us and immediately offered to give us a tour.  Just goes to show you the value of dealing with the smaller builders.  They bend over backward to make you feel like you are cared for and part of their family of owners.  This cemented our thought that we will not go to a big production builder for our boat in the future, because I am sure the after sales service is also as lax.   You feel like you are just a number.  The big builders are pumping out a new boat every day or 2.  The boutique builders are only making a handful of boats in a year.  So they give you the 1 on 1 attention. This boat is the perfect size  and price for us so it is now at the top of our list for our future boat.

Best review so far. The invested time spent building your reputation really pays off with this guided tour by Robert. Now the question is, is there anything they didn't took care of designing this boat? Floor hatch for ventilation at anchor, fresh and sea floating toilets, diesel and electric motors, hatch over the shower, motor service from the outside, rain harvesting, double sinks!
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
The Xquisite X5 had one in the middle of the main salon floor. So they could open it but being right in the middle of the area you walk could lead to an accidental trip. This one being under the Salon table makes it fairly risk-less to keep it open. Good location.

Cruising Off Duty this is the first time I’ve seen them in the main salon. Three airtight compartments? Another unique feature.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Yes Kevin.  It is an escape hatch.  All cats are required to have the escape hatches in the bottom.  some have then in each hull closer to the water so people are often afraid to open them incase a wave comes up and splashes in.  He was just saying that the escape hatch, at this location, when opened allows for great cool air from the surface of the water without much chance of a wave getting in while at anchor.  Free AC!  :-)
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Yes Gionvanni.  This is at the top of our list now.  It checks all the boxes.  Perfect size for us too.  We'd go with the 440 though, not the 400.  We want to have a decent sized dinghy on the davits and having the longer sugar scoops allows for more weight at the back.  Plus it will sail faster and hobby horse less than a shorter cat.
Kevin Mc
Kevin Mc - 6 years ago
Giovanni Fiorentino I cant help to think that “floor hatch” is more of an escape hatch more than anything.

Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Hey Eva.  We love cruises and we see a lot of snowbirds that spend their entire winters going on back to back cruises.  Makes perfect sense.  You have all of your food and activities paid for with nightly entertainment and social outings planned for you and you have nurses and doctors right there on the ship, just in case.  If we were too frail, in our later years, to keep sailing but still wanted to travel, we would definitely consider living the Cruise ship life for the colder months of the year and then live in Canada (with our free health care) during the warm 6 months.  Not a bad way to live.  :-)
Eva Greenwell
Eva Greenwell - 6 years ago
@Cruising Off DutyI am crossing my fingers for you! The 440 would definitely be my choice, 100%, if my health these days didn't preclude me from living on the water. The closest I dare get these days is a world cruise, thanks to Cunard having nice medical facilities. Entirely different experience, but fun none-the-less. When it comes to these beautiful boats, alas, I have to live vicariously through others, thanks to YouTube! :D
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
Thanks Eva. We love this boat now that Robert explained all the extra features built in.  We saw the 440 last year but did not get a guided tour so we only liked it a lot.  But now we Love it.  This is the perfect size and price for a boat that is designed for a world cruising couple.  Head and shoulders better than a big production boat at any size.  We no longer would consider a used Lagoon, FP or Leopard after seeing this cat.  Fingers crossed when we are ready we can get a used one at a good price.
David Hutchings
David Hutchings - 6 years ago
I wasn't expecting to like this boat as the styling is a bit quirky, but I really do. It has a lot of long term cruising design built in from the factory. Also I like implementation of advanced construction techniques such as the honeycomb veneer furnishings which results in a 43' boat 2 tonnes lighter than the smaller Lagoon 42.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
I agree David.  It seem to have completely won us over.  We would never consider getting a big production boat after seeing this boat.  Only concern is with a small builder, there may not be any used ones on the market when we are ready to buy.  It may force us to buy new and finance the difference.  I'd hate losing the depreciation in the first few years of use.  Let's worry about that when the time comes.  Finger crossed one will be in the used market at $500,000.  That would be perfect for us.
Kazooka
Kazooka - 6 years ago
Well, I'm dead. That is the dream boat. The only changes I would make: 1) All lines to the helm (I know you can control the port winches from the helm, but you still need to handle the lines); 2) A self-tacking jib option. Otherwise, it ticks every box and even offers the hybrid option. Incredible!
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
I agree.  Some of the lines going to the port side and expecting that a solo sailor would hold the line from the starboard side, seemed a bit strange.  Maybe they will change that in the future design change or if a new owner requests a line location change.

I know what you are saying.  Cheeky Monkey had a new FP and they had no end of issues with things not working, even though the boat was new and the FP people seemed to just point them toward the 3rd party company that installed the extra option.  I think most times the big production builder will, at best, send you replacement parts and you will be responsible to find a reputable installer on your own to fix your boat.  That would suck in some out of the way place.  Yes, we will do one wrap up episode at the end that states what boats we rank the highest in different size classes.  Most likely.... Best Boat 45' and under (gee I wonder which boat that will be? haha).  Best boat between 45-50', and best boat 50'+.  Maybe even go favorite production boat since most people will end up buying them.  I doubt any big production builders boats will be at the top of our list but the Leopards did impress us this show.  The Lagoons were a disappointment this year.
Michael Rouse
Michael Rouse - 6 years ago
@Cruising Off Duty I've seen that with the other Cat youtube channels. Fresh out of France and people are having issues with water makers, autopilots, etc to get little support from the builder. Can't wait to see these guys next show. Again, awesome videos! Will you be doing a final thoughts of the top 5 in your short list to purchase? I know you have many others to still show but once you're done with the initial videos.
Cruising Off Duty
Cruising Off Duty - 6 years ago
It is very impressive and it was great to have Robert there to tell us about all the extra features that would not have been noticed by us if we just walked through.  The boutique builders were more than happy to give us a guided tour.  The big production companies didn't care to offer even though we said we were there to showcase their boats for our channel.  Shows the level of service you could expect post sale too.  I have little confidence the big production builders would bend over backward for you like these smaller builders would.

I agree.  This boat has thought of just about everything a live-aboard would want.  Very impressed with this boat and now at the top of our list for the under 45' range.  The Majestic at 53' might still be higher on our "Wish list" but that is a Huge boat for just a couple and is probably out of our price range anyway.

We have the Antares next.  We didn't do a full walk through tour of the X5 this year because they came with an older model than last year's episode and the boat didn't have all the new upgrades so I will just point people to last years episode.  We do take the X5 out for a test sail at the end of the show, so we will show that.
