You shouldn't submerse your trailer like that. It's enough that the wheel nave touches the water.

How easy is it to accidentally deploy this thing while you are running on plane causing massive damage?

You must have never launched a boat? That's an absolute dumb statement. Take a stopwatch and time people how long it takes people in teaching videos for both, rope attached to trailer launches, and launches where the boat stays clipped to trailer and driven to dock before trailer is removed from water, vs. this method. Remember start your watch when they start backing up the truck until when they board the boat....this is faaaaaar quicker than any other single person launch I can possibly think of. Maybe faster: dumping the boat from the trailer, parking as fast as you can, sprinting back to the shoreline and swimming as fast as you can to board your boat. This method might shave a minute or two off since you don't have to control the boat back to the dock, but I'll sacrifice the minute or two.

Umm why? It saves time if anything. It would take far longer to get off and tie the boat up ECT. As long as they sit the boat out of the way there's no problem

The only reason i want one of these is that i have a closed bow boat so it's a pain to climb up and down the deck to deploy it and not safe on inclement weather. As for launcing and parking the boat on the water, i think its just a gimmick for me as most launches have some sort of deck where you can simply and securely tie your boat until you park your vehicle. It may come in handy if you are in a remote area with a basic launch, albeit at a risk of loosing your boat and the motor if something goes wrong with the electronics. But thanks for letting us know about your experience with the motor. Hopefully by the time i get one they'll have a rechargable battery for the remote.

you'd waste less time by just tieing it up to the dock - seriously
Mitch Richards
Mitch Richards - 4 years ago
I love to tie my boat up to a dock in windy and rough conditions, especially just from a rope in hand from the trailer. The best part is watching my boat get banged against every single thing around the launch including the shore and the ramp.

Do you feel that it maneuvers as well (for example around Lilly pads) as the cable steer models such as Fortrex? This seems to be what the bass pros think.

Way to risky, i you lose somehow gps connection and your boat drifts out of reach you will be f*cked!
And don`t say that will never happen because it happended to a friend ot mine. Spotlock lost gps connection and the boat drifted away and out of reach while he was parking his car. When he came back the boat was not where he expected and no other boat was around to help him either. Took him hours and hours to get his boat back with aid of some others. Boat was damaged because it drifted to rocks. So as a tip, never ever use this method when no one is around!
Brakkeleer Thuis
Brakkeleer Thuis - 7 years ago
Nope. GPS module got broke. Yes, things can get broke and go wrong, that`s all i`m saying.
Be quiet and fish
Be quiet and fish - 7 years ago
Spot lock uses an accelerometer along with the GPS so a loss of GPS will not make it go crazy and travel/drift across the lake. The chances are that he accidentally hit another button on the remote which caused it to stop holding position or he has an electrical issue. You can see in the video that I wait until the boat is holding before I leave. This allows me to drive the boat to the ramp in case the anchor mode fails to work. If you are launching in heavy current or high winds you should use your best judgement before launching like this.

So the actual ad looked like the boat automatically came back to pick him up, I seen you driving the boat back towards you, so I take it that it does not come back, you actually have to run it? Thanks for the review, I will be definitely be looking into this unit.

@Be quiet and fish couldn't you program a waypoint for it to go to such as the dock ?
Be quiet and fish
Be quiet and fish - 7 years ago
You are in control at all times with the exception of anchor mode. When you launch the boat you activate anchor mode once it is clear of the trailer. You must then drive it back to the dock with the remote. After the first time you will be a pro with it.

Thanks, the newer setups can use your smartphone as controllers as well. I believe they also made the new controllers rechargeable. After two seasons with the motor I feel that it was a good investment.

Just heard the other day the remotes are going to run off of 3 AAA batteries in 2017, or you will be able to just use your phone with the new app, since the new 2017 models will have bluetooth capability.

i bought a used 48lb thrust minn kota auto pilot trolling motor how do I find out if ir's 12 volt or 24 volt ?
3waver
3waver - 6 years ago
It's likely 12volt. You typically don't require 24volt until you're around the 80lb thrust.
Be quiet and fish
Be quiet and fish - 7 years ago
It is most likely a 12 volt motor. There are two ways of figuring this out. You can hook it up to one single battery and try to power it on, if it powers on then it is 12 volt, if not then 24 volt is the probable answer. I would however just look up the model in google and see if that model in 48lb is 12 or 24. Do not hook up 24 volts without knowing if it is 24 volts, you may damage the motor and electronics.

Be quiet and fish
Be quiet and fish - 8 years ago
+YouWrasse IsMine (th3master69) After I posted the video I noticed it was my fault. As I was moving it up to the dock I wasn't paying attention and twisted it to the max. When it is operating in an automatic mode it will take care of it for the most part. Sometimes it does get confused and needs to be spun back around with the remote to clear line twist.

+YouWrasse IsMine (th3master69) I thought that was what you were trying to say. I will tell you a funny story, I did this style of launch at a busy boat ramp once. A fella at the dock thought I lost control of my boat and jumped into the water to save it. I told him thanks for the effort and tried not to laugh.

Was taking the factory one off and installing the new hard and did you have to drill new holes
Be quiet and fish
Be quiet and fish - 8 years ago
+Jonathan Watts I had a Minn Kota Powerdrive on the boat and the bolt holes did line up well. The Powerdrive I did have was very old so I cannot say that it will work for you. The one thing I didn't like is the directions have you disassemble a portion of the lifting drive and it has you remove two small c-clips, they are easily lost so be carful. Also it is easy to mess up the timing of the lifting assembly, I used tape to mark it's position before I pulled the clips. The hardest part for me was removing the old base bolts and installing the new base bolts because it is hard to access underneath the bow of my boat. I spent probably a total of three hours on the mounting, so it wasn't too bad.
