If you want to kayak in rough water and waves that will break over the deck get a closed cockpit kayak with a spray skirt or a sit on top. They are designed for that type of water.

You have not given any specifics. I have had the boat out in 1 foot waves in a bay. The boat is an open cockpit kayak. No spray skirt for waves that break over the boat. This is obvious. Hi there! Thanks for the review and the footage. I have a few questions, looking for some honest thoughts.

First of all, safety-wise, is this boat any different from other types of kayaks when it comes to scrambling back on just in case you capsize while on solo? I love the idea of converting this to a solo for an occasional outing myself, so any thoughts on the safety (is it too heavy to flip alone, etc.) would be great.

Also, looking at some of the reviews on REI doesn't look that great. Especially the comments about manufacturing quality. The metal parts (the G-buckle, the cross brace rod) look like they bend easily, and aren't handling the load. Have you seen/experienced similar issues?

I found Oru responsive. If you have an issue give them a try, Good Luck it is worth the test to see if it can get you out on the water and into adventure! =Cosmo

@Cosmo Weems Thanks for your reply! Yes, I noticed that the crossbar support is pretty close to the back of the backrest of the front seat. If a heavy person sat up front, and leaned back, that could be a problem... In fact, that might also explain the bent G-Hooks.

I decided to pick this up at REI. They have a rock solid return policy. I'm totally excited for this product because it definitely checks all of my barriers for Kayaking (no storage space at home, don't have a car with a rack, etc.).

I was shipped an early model. It has G hooks that slip I fixed that by jamming scrunching the strap into the point where the strap goes into the buckle. I pinged Oru about that and they offered to send me new books. I declined because I solved the problem. I am an experienced kayaker. I think the boat handles well. I did read the REI reviews. One person with slipping buckles appears to have been using the metal cross strut as a back rest rather than the straps. I can only assume they are of umm larger sized person. The cross strut is not a back rest. duhh. I had the boat out several times so far and no floorboard issues. I Like it. I do have to note. An Oru is a delicate boat compared to a rotomolded plastic boat. It needs to be treated well. and not abused. I am keeping mine! =Cosmo

It has rails for mounting stuff. At this point I think you need to call Oru kayak to answer your questions.

@Cosmo Weems Where do you mount the fishfinder? The rod holders? Can you stand in it while casting? Is there a room for a cooler bag for the catch? :)
See, if you are going to argue about the pros of such kayak, packability alone won't cut it because there are drop stich inflatable yaks on the market for about 1300 USD less, which are just as packable and far easier to deploy on the water.
The very obvious advantage of this boat is how light it is-on par with kevlar and carbon fibre yaks which cost twice as much.
And being so light means you can cover twice or three times as much water as one would do in a tandem pedal kayak for the portage of Oru is a breeze compared to hard plastic boats.

Anyway, was just teasing you, be safe and take the yak to the water as much as you can,
