New 2016 Luxury Performance Pontoon Boats: Bennington 2550RSRA For 2016, Bennington restyled its popular R-Series of custom luxury performance pontoons, and models such as the 2550 RSRA show off the results. The characteristic downward swoosh of Bennington’s fence rails ends in a fiberglass stern that matches its angle. Rear-firing speakers keep passengers out back in the groove. An extra-large swim platform and a tall optional ski pylon make it ready for the aquatic games, and boarding is easy thanks to the stainless steel swimming pool–style ladder. The rear seating group, accessed through the centerline walkthrough, has twin rear-facing recliners whose backrests have the perfect amount of recline. Bennington’s 2016 R-Series boats have new two-tone upholstery that’s soft to the touch and features diamond-stitched accent panels. You can fill in the pontoon's rear walkthrough with an optional sectional to turn the whole area into a conversation pit. Perhaps the biggest statement on the 2550 pontoon boats are the standard (for this model) aluminum-clad forward-swept sport arch that is totally seam-free. It has embedded speakers to bring the sound off the floor for better sonic dispersion. Amidships are two restyled Pure Comfort V2 captain’s chairs with high backs that cradle riders in comfort. At the helm, the driver has a standard Garmin Echo 100 fishfinder and holds on to a newly designed leather-wrapped, stainless steel wheel. The bow section mirrors the stern with twin recliner couches that have loads of storage underneath. At the rear of the port-side lounger on our boat was a pop-up changing room that can be optioned to hold a Porta Potti. A large espresso teak dining table is perfect for snack displays, and twin cupholders can be moved around the boat. Our test boat was rigged to rock with the Elliptical Sport Performance Package, which has a giant 32-inch center tube and a 25-inch transom to allow Bennington to mount a Yamaha F300 V-6 outboard. The 2550 RSRA rides high in the water, and the center tube is bigger, so the pontoon can bank like a sportboat in hard turns. It was quick out of the hole, with a time to plane of 2.6 seconds, and the Yamaha’s mid-range snap took it to 30 mph in 6.7 seconds. Top speed was 44.9 mph.
