Pukas The Link Surfboard Review

We review the Pukas Link surfboard, shaped by Matt Biolos. The Link is a super fun and skatey shortboard but with dialled in performance as well. The Link is definitely not a cruiser, or a low rocker groveller, but a board with some proper rocker and concaves. This is a board for a good surfer to chuck around, smack the lip and generally surf radically in small clean beach break conditions. Matt has been at the forefront of the wider and shorter board revolution and has always tried to execute this with performance in mind, not just fashion or retro. Matt started with his ShortRound and made it a little more racy. The nose was pulled in and more tail rocker was added so the board could fit into faster and more dumpy waves. To work with the rocker, Matt added a lot more concave from the centre back through the fins. The concave gets up and going and fast, as well as increases rail curve, allowing for quick radical direction changes. How does the link compares with the ci sampler ?

In summary I would say the link is fuller in the nose, and has a bit more overall rocker. The CI Sampler has a better low end for surel. For more info hive is a shout info@boardshop.co.uk

The Pukas Link is working for me in anything, waist to head high, messy or clean. Simply an everyday shape that you could have as a 'one-board-quiver' if the waves have some push. It catches waves remarkably easily, has nice pop when you pump, floats well without being corky and there's a killer 5mm single concave from nose to tail giving it spring and lift from the get go.

One question...what are the main differences between the link and the short round in terms of : rocker, paddling, turns, floatation, thin /narrow tail? The look exactly the same board? Thanks

Boardshop.co.uk Hi,
Is that correct that the link doesn’t like wind as an eps board? I have the 5.10 31.75L.
On windy conditions It’s difficult to paddle and it feels that you’re not moving forward at all.
Hard to catch waves, however on glassy conditions w/o wind it works perfectly.

I would go around 5ft 6 with the Link. Hope that helps. Cheers

+Marco Renzi Hi, Yes I think the custom 5ft 9 would be perfect for you. Would fly in the beach break conditions, especially with the element of performance you are looking for.

+Boardshop.co.uk i'm 511 and i was looking for a custom 5'9 19 5/8 2 5/8....do you think it should be ridden at my same height? I was a bit confused if going with a link, short round or sampler, or new flyer.... I was actually looking for a board to surf 2-3 max 4ft mushy beach break, a board that is fast and could allow some aerials. The short round looks a bit slow in videos. Thanks

+Marco Renzi Hi, The Short Round and Link are quite similar but think of the link as a performance short round. If you were to take the same length short round to link, the link would have more rocker, slightly narrower tail and shaper rails. In terms of paddle power and wave catching the short round would have a bit more volume so paddles a bit better. Both brilliant boards – the link is a bit more performance orientated and likes a quite quick, dumpy, steep, beach break to fully come alive! Were you looking at a particular size in either board?
