If you decide to buy somewhere else or would like to support the show, please donate at https://www.paypal.me/surfnshow In this episode I review the Ghost by Pyzel Surfboards. This high performance custom is made for the waves I surf here in Southern Ca and the board DIMS are 5’9” x 18.88 x 2.44 Liters 26.7. It took roughly 6 months to get this board review done partially because of the lack of surf this winter. With that being said we got to test it in punchy little beach type waves in 3-4’ and some point break waves ranging from 2-5’. This board is very user friendly for a HPSB and I noticed that it paddles very well, along with generous sized sweet spots that make it very forgiving to ride. One of the easiest performance boards I have ever ridden. It does not demand your feet to be in the perfect spots on the deck of the board to do good turns, and generate speed. I rode this board with the John John Florence signature Futures Fins as a Thruster set up in the hollow lefts we got to surf and then I switched to a Quad set up for a little more speed at the point breaks. All in all this is a great HPSB to have in my Quiver and I am sure it can handle any size surf I want to push myself to ride.

Hi Noel. Just checking out your review on the Ghost. Excellent review as always. I have a specific question and wondering your thoughts. The break I am moving to is Zuma, which if you're not familiar, is a pretty steep and closed out beach break, thus I am trying to find a board that will be most suitable for it. I'm 5'11" 180lbs and a fairly decent surfer. I also would like the board to hold up in most other Southern California waves as well. I currently have a Tomo Evo as a grovler, which is plenty fun, but not so good for steeper or bigger waves. Much appreciated.

@Surf n Show Reviews Awesome. Thanks Noel!

Barclay Neel Zuma is a pretty hollow beach break. I would check out the Pyzel Shadow for that wave. The Ghost will go good too but the Shadow will need less power to go good.

Really helpfull. Thanks

Yannick Haddouche I would Stock 5’8” at 26 liters
Yannick Haddouche

Because my most performance surfboards are sci phi 5'6 (daily driver)and lovebuzz futureflex 5'7 (perform smaller waves), 24'7 liters eps foam both, should I go for ghost 5'8 stock dims 24,7 liters too in PU, or 5'8 stock dims 26 liters?

I' m 5'9, around 150 lbs, bit more in winter.

I could order custom 5'8 thicker to be between 24'7 and 26 liters....

Your knowledge help to progress.

Just to help:

5'7 sci phi I use before 5'6 was playfull with quad in flatter waves, and easier paddler too with 26 liters, but too much material under m'y feet when waves start pumping like we regulary have here in France beachbreaks.

Same problem with m'y Hypto, old cruiser 5'6, 28'8 liters, than I use more now during winter to trim and cutback with thicker wetsuit, gloves etc....  hard to order custom narrower directly from australia to France. But I love this low rail and forward wide point. Futureflex too with this flat rocker. Just dream about shorter and narrower one. With more rocker, it could be the ghost!

I surf go fish 1 year now, 27... liters, 20 1/4 wide as you know, and feel directly better on seaside when I receive and surf it last week. Less volume and outline tail help me  to perform more with flow.

I order and wait Neck beard2, stock dim 5'5, 25,6 liters spine tek. Hope it's not too much....

Thanks again for  helping.

I read in Jon Pyzel interview, JJF has ghost quiver from 6'0 to 6'8, Same thickness and wide for each board, 18 3/4 x 2 1/2.

Could we say the rule to bigger waves is adding lenght on boards but not wider to keep control on rail, and playing à bit with thickness for volume?

or not playing with thickness too, and finally volume added by lenght give more weight to the board, so the extra volume is no more a problem because or the extra weight too
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Yannick Haddouche I guess it could have the same liters by adding a little more thickness but I wouldn’t go wider than 19 wide on the Ghost for me. A board like the Ghost isn’t supposed to be wide and ridden in mushy waves. You want that board to be responsive and have good hold in waves with some power.
Yannick Haddouche
Yannick Haddouche - 5 years ago
Ok Noël, Everything is more clear now for me. Easier to spend money in boards whith advices comming from real tester. I paypal you again today for your job. In shops around here, so few sellers knows their boards and don't surf it.

I suppose 5'7 you could order for your spot couldn't be in same volume you had with 5'9 in your test?
Surf n Show Reviews

Yannick Haddouche I would Ride a Phantom in 3-5’ surf and the 5’7” Ghost in 4-8’ surf. I would not ride the Ghost in 3-4’ surf... too much hold for my likings unless the waves are super hollow.

I feel like your asking me to use the Ghost as a Daily Driver or a HPSB and I would not choose that board as a Daily Driver for where I live and surf on a regular basis. I would choose the Phantom as a Daily Driver.
Yannick Haddouche
Yannick Haddouche - 5 years ago
@Surf n Show Reviews Last question: 5'7 ghost you talk about could replace Phantom for you?
Surf n Show Reviews

Yannick Haddouche
Yannick Haddouche - 5 years ago
And if I need à bit more lenght, do I have to order with same wide and thickness? Same volume?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Yannick Haddouche if I ordered another Ghost for where I surf here in So Cal I would go shorter maybe 5’7” and ride it in 4-8’ surf. The Round Pin Tail has good hold and I would not like it in surf under 4’.
Yannick Haddouche
Yannick Haddouche - 5 years ago
Hello Noël,
Could you imagine surfing the Ghost in epoxy?

I heard John John rides his small ghost in epoxy in smaller waves.

In this case, would you change the volume or the board?

Would it be made with eps foam too or polyuréthane?

Thanks for your advices.

I paypal you last month.

I receive m'y sea side 5'2 this days and test it 2 times: résolu more perf than go fish without loosing the flow. Thanks
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Yannick Haddouche For me the Ghost is more of a mini step up for waves that range 5-10’. I would not want my mini step up boards in EPS.. they are too topical at high speeds and they are a bit harder to control with the chatter too.

If your looking for a sick smaller wave board with performance then go with the Phantom in EPS

Ramiro Garcia A good rule of thumb on liters is take your weight in pounds and divide it by 6 for intermediate/advanced surfers. If the seems a little low then add 1 more liter. Cheers

Hey Noel, i'm 5'9 at 174lbs and i ride a stock 5'10 Phantom in NorCal and i was looking into the 6'2 ghost for OH Ocean beach and also for a travel board. I've ridden the Phantom in some pretty good size surf before but i want a little more volume to surf a little more comfortable in some bigger size waves. would the 6'2 be a good choice or would a 6'-6'3 be better?

I'm 5'9" 180 with a 6'3" ghost and it doesn't feel to big. The 6'3 makes an excellent winter board here in Nor Cal where you have to paddle alot. Its one of the best paddling shortboards i've ever been on which helps to get in a little early and the rail holds really well giving you alot of confidence. I've had mine in 3ft-10ft. The 10ft days I felt a bit under gunned where a 6'8" probably would of helped but at that point I would probably spring for the Padillac model. It definitely likes a steeper/punchy wave but still works suprisingly well on the smaller 3/4ft days when i had the wrong board with me.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Alessandro Alpago I would go similar to your mini step up boards. If your going to charge bigger waves then you need to choose how long you want it to be and how much volume you want.

Hey Noel. Late to the party since the review. Long time viewer but first time commenter. Really appreciated the breakdown on this video as well as the comments. I was concerned with the stock Dims as I am 5’7 145lbs. Saw your input on the 5’7 for here in soCal and pulled the trigger on it. Although I’ve only had a session or two with it, I’m in love with it. I agree that the quads handle the smaller waves well so I feel like I won’t be disappointed if Surfline gets it wrong and it isn’t as good as the initial report. Thanks for being very attentive to details on your show. It helps immensely in making decisions as a consumer on a budget. Looking forward to more of your reviews. Stay stoked and having fun! Cheers.

Surf n Show Reviews thanks again for the response. Perhaps it is just the conditions we’ve had at the beach breaks I usually surf (up until this past week being the exception). Perhaps I’ll try playing around with it as a quad rears with carbon. I appreciated the review you did for the cymatic and comparing FCS 2 with the futures as it made me want to expand myself into trying more fin set ups.

Hey Noel. I was curious as to what FCS 2 fin you would suggest for the ghost? I was running my MF 2 medium fins on it and it was a ton of fun at the point break, but I seem to struggle getting enough drive in beach breaks like blacks. Do you have a recommendation for both types of breaks and would you suggest going up to a larger size to get the increased drive? I’m 5,7 145lbs and my ghost is a 5’7

Great review Noel! I bought an al Merrick pod mod for my daily driver and have been looking for a step up board like the ghost for bigger days. The local shop has a pyzel ghost at 6’4 x 19.5 x 2.5 x 33.1 cl. I was curious to see if you think the volume will be efficient for my weight or if I should get more volume? I’m 6ft 215 pds. My current dims on my pod mod are 5’10 x 20 7/8 x 2 5/8 x 35.7. Thanks again for the great work!

Although buttery smooth on rail, I also find the the Ghost is a bit slower in smaller waves. I have a 5'10"(my height) and it feels more like a 6'0". A 5'8" would have been a better choice. That said, it works extremely well in larger surf without having a ton foam stretching out in front of you which always feels awkward to me when I step up. Personal Conclusions: buy 1-2 inches smaller than normal dims unless you want to use it as a step-up in your usual dims.
b4ssfunk3d
b4ssfunk3d - 6 years ago
I hope I made the right choice with my 5'10. I am riding a Klimax Raptor from Peru which is 5'10 x 19 x 2.32 at 26L. My normal board was a wave catching shortboard at 5'8 with about the same volume. I feel like the new board is a tiny bit big for me as I am 5'8 and 155 pounds and maybe could have gone with a 5'9. But I feel like I might eat those same words when I want to surf 6-9 foot waves that will be coming soon to Peru in a few days. In words of a famous surfer, foam can be your friend. It doesn't hurt to have a little more. I am a tube rider more than anything so I probably shouldnt worry about 5'10 being too big when I need a one board quiver for bigger waves too

Was it just me, or did it seem like John John was catching rail like crazy on this board in Brazil? It seems to me that the “Bastard” model that he was surfing looked way better under his feet. In my experience boards with the wide point forward cause me to get my weight to far forward on the board causing the board not to turn, but instead catch. I really would love to see a review of the Bastard or the 74, to hear a comparison between Pyzel boards that are wide forward vs wide point to the rear.

Sean W. Hanley I didn’t watch too much of the contest but I thought JJF did some sick turns and his board looked good but he was falling more than normal.

My experience with the Ghost was very good... the board wasn’t catching on the front end any more than or less compared to a regular HPSB outline. I found the Ghost to very forgiving.

Maybe we can review the other twin boards this winter when we get some good winter swells.

I am 6'2 190, Gained some weight and for some strange reason have been surfing better. Maybe muscle memory. My question has nothing to do with this ghost board but combining 80s style and something like this. I had a concave tail 80s board that I could lean into a bottom turn and destroy. The board had enough foam and volume to get me into any size wave. The only set back the board had was being almost 3 inches thick. It was a 6'2 x 2 7/8 x 20. Is there a board you have tested that incorporates 80s, 90s rail surfing to something new and progressive? I still have some old school boards that rip but need to experiment with something new. Normally I ride 6'2 x 19 1/4 x 2 5/8. But still miss more foam and volume.

Rome Cheers... I think the SKX looked Spicey too but remember that was EPS too. Way more lively in general but the Ghost rails really settled down nicely on big carves. I think as the waves get bigger the Ghost will shine bright and I will be able to push hard on my turns.

Great review and surfing! Your surfing looked better in the quad setup to me. Looked snappier.

I just purchased the squash tail "Phantom" any thoughts on how you actually think these two might compare? Pyzel's messaging seems to say that the Phantom is a lower end wave type board and I will be riding it from 2ft-6ft I guess... Also, very interesting that you mention the entry rocker is lower on the Ghost than most HP boards. Hopefully the Phantom will do for the waves Im getting here in the UK. P.s - Thanks for all your hard work on these reviews!

Great ! I m going to Indo on Monday and was considering getting one today on top of my shortboard. I have no doubt it s an excellent board but it looks like you really need to take it on solid waves only, at least a punchy 4 foot (you might be better off using a normal shortboard otherwise). Just worried that I end up no using it much after my trip... On the shooting of you surfing, we can tell it starts to light up on the bigger waves

yeah exactly i d love to get it for indo but I think my fever should go fine for up to double over head

Mathieu Revel I agree it needs some juice. I don’t HPSB very often.. it needs to be 4-6+ for me to even consider them. This Ghost is a legit HPSB and I would only ride a few times a year where I surf. Maybe if I surfed Blacks, DMJ’s or some heavier beachies

This whole review seems irrelevant as you are riding customized dims. Not the stock dims.

Stock dims are very different to what jjf surfs.

I had a stock dim ghost it seemed to be geared for large 6+ foot waves as a step up. I sold it straight away as I don't ride 6+ foot waves. And it didn't work well in smaller stuff

Surf n Show Reviews Yep. Should of gone custom dims. Love your reviews. Keep it up!!!

Johnny Pp I made this board relevant for myself by ordering it for So Cal waves. Stock DIMS in the Ghost are more suitable for bigger waves that I don’t surf on a regular basis so I made it work. JJF rode the Ghost here at The 2017 Hurley Pro event in EPS and it looked good under hit feet.

I usually order my HPSB custom from most board makers because the stock boards are a bit too long for my likings. Maybe you should have ordered yours custom too...
