Pyzel "Phantom" Surfboard Review by Noel Salas Ep. 61

No obligation, but if you want to support the Site and keep the reviews coming you can donate here. https://www.paypal.me/surfnshow In this episode I review the Phantom by Pyzel Surfboards. We get epic waves for this board review and the Phantom did not disappoint. This board is designed as a daily driver for waves that range from 2-7’. After testing it in waist to 1’ foot overheard I would say this board excels in these types of conditions. Jon Pyzel created the Phantom with the same DNA as the Ghost. The Ghost is a HPSB for waves that excel in waves in 4-10’+. The Ghost and Phantom both have their wide point front from center with extra foam under the chest for paddle assistance. They also have a relaxed entry rocker to help with paddling and extra speed down the line. The back half of both the Ghost, and Phantom are all performance and these two boards excel in the pocket and off the bottom. The Phantom is very user friendly and I highly recommend it for intermediate to advanced surfers. EPS Gremlin Board DIMS: 5’4” x 19.25 x 2.31 Liters 26.35

Got the Phantom, your assessment is spot on. Excellent paddler, fast, and good range. Not a quad guy but curious to try with this board. Have you used AM2’s in a quad setup? Do you think they’d go as well as the JJ front fins you used?

Thanks

The best thing about these boards is how closely they relate to one another. So many shapers seem to shape individual boards in isolation so you end up with a groveller, daily driver, and step up that feel completely different to surf. Sure they might all work really well, but it takes a few waves to get used to a board every time conditions change. But with the ghost family each board flows into the other in a really logical way and preserves that same feeling so that surfing a gremlin in gutless waves feels weirdly similar to surfing a ghost in overhead surf. It seems so obvious but by shaping a family boards with forming the perfect performance-based quiver in mind, Pyzel is both lessening the transition between boards for customers and increasing the chances of repeat business e.g. if I buy a phantom and later on am in the market for a step up, the ghost is the obvious choice. Buy a gremlin for small days, a phantom or shadow for average days (depending on how high performance you want to be), and various lengths of ghost as your step ups.

Rhidian D Very well said and I completely agree. The transition between the boards in the Ghost Family is pretty seamless.

Hey Noel,
I’m interested in ordering the Phantom as a daily driver and step down from my 5 10’ Ghost. I am a 50yo guy from Australia, intermediate/above average, fit and surf nearly everyday. I weigh 145lbs.
I’m looking at electralite finish.
I was thinking the 5”8’ 27.3L in stock dims,
Would you suggest dropping down to the 5”7 26.7L in electralite due to its better floating/buoyancy?
Cheers Dan

Hi Noel, some advice please? I am 51, 5'7, 73kg's, live on the South West Coast of Victoria AUST and would say I am an intermediate surfer. I have a 5'9 CI Grovellor 4 @ 30.5 lts and a 5'10 Chilli Rare Bird @ 30.5 lts also . As I am getting a little older and the paddling power is dropping, I was looking at adding a little extra volume into my board quiver for when I get out in the bigger 4 foot + days down here. The 3 boards that are really catching my eye's are the OG Flyer, Neck Beard 2 and the Pyzell Phantom at around the 31 lts + range. Am I on the right path and which board would you suggest? thanks

Hi Noel, I am buying the Phantom 5’11 stock dim in EPS construction. I am 5’10, 183 lbs, good surfer. The board has 31 L. I’ve different boards in my quiver and with this one I am looking to surf at 3-6 ft punchier beach break in OB (SF), Bocas del Toro, Costa Rica, France and Portugal. Should I shave off 1/2 liter or 31 L is a good number? I recently surfed a Sci Fi 5’10 at 30.7 lt in a Point Break in Portugal and felt great under my feet. Thanks and keep up with the great work u are doing

Noel epic review mate!
I live in Bali and want to order a custom Phantom, I think it will go great for a lot of the waves we get here in the Canggu area, and will fit in nicely with my good-wave board JS Monsta 6, and my groveler JS Blak Box 2.
My one concern is with the construction/durability. At the Pyzel factory here in Bali I believe the only construction option is standard PU (I prefer the feel of PU to Epoxy anyway), and I know you were riding yours with team light glassing, but since I'm ordering a custom do you think standard PU with standard 4x4x4 glassing will be durable enough so that the deck doesn't get all compressed in and can handle a fair bit of air travel, riding around on the side of my scooter etc?
Lastly, the quad setup you were riding it with looked great, we have FCS 2 down here, what FCS 2 quad fin setup would you recommend to match what you were riding here in Futures?

Thanks heaps mate and keep up the great reviews I love em! :)

Surf n Show Reviews Hi Noel I’m about to order a custom Phantom here in Bali and just trying to decide on the dims, I’m thinking PU construction at either 5’10” 30.1L or 5’11” 31L, maybe it’s splitting hairs haha but just wanted to quickly drop you a line and see if you had any thoughts because I’m a little nervous about under-voluming. My current good wave shortboard is a JS Monsta 6’2” 30.2L.
I’m about 171lbs and 6’1” and am intermediate surfer but very paddle fit from surfing every day here.
Thanks mate you’re a legend and keep up the amazing reviews, they’re a huge contribution to the surfing community :)

Hey Noel, awesome review as always. Just a question, after your reviews on the Holy Grail and chatting to a guy on a HG I was definitely getting one, but I got a demo and took it out in 3ft sort of slow waves. Board was as you say fast, easy paddler, but I found on my backhand when always doing a drawn out turn, it would nearly stop. It went awesome in the pocket but out on an open face didn't want to bounce back like my Mod Pod say. To be honest most waves in my area are more full and slower, but do get great steep punchy waves too but only once every 10 surfs. I'm now thinking phantom looks more suited for all types of waves, thoughts please Noel?? Have brought the sampler and the pod mod from your reviews and have been spot on.. Sorry long message, but spending 1k HG got to get it right..

Domonique Ascension Gateway The Sampler and PM have less rocker compared to the HG so they will go way better on a slow flat wave. I think the Phantom will struggle on that wave too. I suggest CI’s new Neck Beard 2, or the Pyzel Gremlin. The NB2 review drops in 3 days....

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Kohei Matsuda The JJF has less rake... so it pivots faster. I wouldn’t say it’s better than the DR fins.... they draw different lines. If your board feels tight then the JJF template will help your board turn faster. If you surf a lot of beach breaks then the JJF fin will get you vertical in the pocket faster. If you surf a lot of point breaks then you might like the DR fins better... open face waves with more room to carve.
Paul James
Paul James - 6 years ago
What would you say about ordering it with a round tail instead of the squash ? I'm always a bit afraid with "wide" squash tail. I surf in Hossegor mostly, and we have a bit of everything, it can be a bit mushy, it can be very steep, size is rarely more than 6-7 feet and when it is, it is too hard to evolve in the water as it often gets very hollow and dangerous (without even talking of the currents) for non pros. This is why The Phantom looks like a perfect board, but I would be tempted to get the round tail to hold steeper faces without loosing the "daily driver" aspect of the board. The only real downside to the round tail would be to have more difficulty for tighter arc I guess ? am I right ? but is it very different ?
Thanks for everything Noel, I always recommend your show to friends who think about changing boards.

Paul James The Phantom has less entry rocker but more belly and tail rocker compared to the OG. The Phantom is easier to surf and a bit more radical in the pocket.
Paul James
Paul James - 6 years ago
Thanks for the great answer. How would you compare the OG Flyer to the Phantom, because for the size I would need (6'2 - 6'3) they have the same dimensions and they look pretty similar. Thanks again
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Paul James A Round Tail sounds good for your waves. The around tail will do Sick arcing turns but it will struggle to go vertical. Round tail boards want to carve and do more round turns... a Squash Tail enables you to pivot off the rounded corner as the breaks off the water. Water adheres to curves that’s why the round tail holds so good.

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
-Prem The Round tail offers more hold because water adheres to curves. You might want a Round tail for big carves and good drive through your turns. Might be good in those punchy reef breaks. In smaller waves here in CA I would go Squash in HI I might want a Round tail for the power there.

rippert No comparison for me... the JS Monsta Box is epic in 2-5’ surf beyond that it starts to get a little skiddish off the bottom. The Phantom handles 2-7+ with no problem due to its tail rocker. I think the MB will be faster in 2-4’ surf but the Phantom will out perform it in the pocket in 3-7’ surf. Both boards are sick though....

50. comment for Pyzel "Phantom" Surfboard Review by Noel Salas Ep. 61

S Murray
S Murray - 6 years ago
Question for you Noel. Pyzel says to ride this board around your height, but that would put me at many liters over my typical HPSB volume, and actually over my groveler volume as well. I noticed you rode yours shorter. I'm around 190-200 (depending on the beer drinking season), decent shape, and I'm 6'3. My typical volume averages around 32, MAYBE 33. The Phantom in stock dim 6'0 is 32.60 liters... should I ignore the "ride your height" and go shorter? I want to keep a board that will fit in the pocket when it's decent here in FL. I find my 6'3 V2 Shortboard by Lost gets hung up a lot when I try to push it and it's not way overhead.

Alex Wender You could go with a more upright fin to loosen it up a bit... the Haydenshapes or the WCT fins. If you go upright then I recommend trying a Large in the Hadenshape fins so you still have speed.... the WCT fins only come in Medium.

Hi Noel. Big fan of your videos. Have another one of the “this vs. that” questions that you get a lot, and they are very helpful for comparison. How would you describe the difference between the CI OG Flyer vs The Phantom ?

I’m looking for a daily driver in smaller 3 or 4ft conditions that are a bit faster then your local, I’m in oz but maybe more like blacks for comparison. Which board is more user friendly and paddles into waves easier?

I have demoed a 6’0 stock OG Flyer a few times now and really liked it. Did not think it paddled great in bigger slower waves but easy to take drops so could just sit s bit deeper.

Ps. My favourite all time board is the Pyzel Stubby Bastard, have it both in PU and Epoxy.

Karl Jakobsson They Both have low entry rockers. The Phantom seems to have more tail rocker.... so a little more HP feel.
Karl Jakobsson
Karl Jakobsson - 6 years ago
Surf n Show Reviews Thanks Noel! Much appreciated. Sounds like the phantom is more similar to the Uber Driver. Guessing UD has a tad more nose rocker perhaps.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Karl Jakobsson The Phantom has more foam under the chest and a fuller outline on the front end of the board. The center of the board to the tail silvers like a HPSB. Great combo for the wave size you described. I say Phantom over the OG.
Chris Fan
Chris Fan - 6 years ago
Hey Noel, would you say the phantom and the rocket 9 are similar? On paper they have nearly the same dims on paper. The also both have lower nose and higher tail rocker. Seemed like you liked the phantom lots more... Any insight on this? Thanks!
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Chris Fan The Phantom has more foam under the chest and front foot... so it paddles better and the Phantom has way more speed. The Rocket 9 lacked speed as a Thruster but had good speed with the 2+1 set up. The Phantom seems to have a little more tail rocker... so more traction off the pocket and a little more surface area in the tail makes it super fast. The Rocket 9 has a pulled in tail for performance but I think because the tail is so pulled in that it lacked surface area to give it that down the line speed unless I used the Twin fin set up. Others might disagree with me... a lot of people swear by the Rocket 9.

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Javier Hernando Rodriguez The Phantom is more user friendly. Easy to surf, great paddler, and Big sweet spot under the front foot. The Gamma is epic but not very forgiving.... it’s a HPSB and it needs at least a 3’ wave or bigger to go good. The Phantom has a good wave range of 2-7’+.

Was thinking be good if you could do some Dylan Longbottom boards. They go good, and have a bit of a following over here in Oz.
I got a 5.9 x 19 x 2 7/16 free flow with less lts than he states ( feels like bit under 27 not 29 lts)
It"s a good performance board in good waves.
His other models the mexican and new mex5 look good too which i keen to try.
I also have a 5.8 x 19 1/2 x 2 3/8 twister which is a fun summer board, been trying the c- drive fins in it which are pretty rad. You should try them sometime. Drivey with release, but a bit funky sometimes...

Daniel Perlaky

I think a pretty valuable takeaway is that comment about a shaper building out a quiver of boards that share the same DNA – it's very logical to alter a board to suit different waves without changing the core principles of the design and feel. Maybe similar to Rocket and Rocket Wide but this kind of takes it to another level where with the three boards you can pretty much handle everything without having to fully re-adjust your approach to suit a totally different board.

I know you had the Team Lite glassing on there but durability is a big concern, especially for the travel boards. I think Pyzel has some durable options but I have a Pyzel in Firewire FST construction and after a year it has literally 0 pressure dents and barely a scratch even after a few run ins with super low tide reef heads. Too bad FW and Pyzel ended their shaping arrangement but hopefully more and more shapers will give options for ultra-durable closed-cell EPS for worry-free travel.
Daniel Perlaky
Daniel Perlaky - 6 years ago
Word... I also have a Machado Almond Butter in TimberTek, arguably the most eco-friendly of the constructions (though no board is truly eco-friendly), and the longer we can make a board last without losing performance the better I think – part of the reason I think your show is valuable is because it helps people dial in to the right board for them and then hopefully have to buy less boards in total. The Almond Butter has been on trips and has taken airline abuse without any issues and also has no pressure dents. The closed cell EPS is a big bonus on trips as well because it doesn't need immediate repair and won't suck in water – so rather than a hack job during the trip and waiting for it to cure it's reasonable to wait until you get home to repair.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Great comments and I agree with you about all of it. Durability is very important to me too and the Firewire constructions are next level in durability and feel. So far I have tested the LFT, and Helium and they felt great and were very durable. Thanks for your comments.....

Hey Noel, I have the same question too. Do you feel it'd be kinda pointless to have the phantom and the uber driver? Or better to go phantom and a more dedicated groveler? Seems like the uber driver isn't really a dedicated groveler for those soft 1-2ft mush days we've been getting in SD recently. THANKS!

Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Both boards are epic.... the Phantom has more foam under the chest so it paddles better and it has a bit more rocker in the belly of the board and in the tail so it will have better traction off the bottom. The Uber will grovel a little better because it has flatter rocker in the belly allowing for more speed in flatter sections on 1-3' surf. Both boards are user friendly and are great daily drivers.

i ended up going with a 6'0 psycho killer in carbon wrap. It's an amazing board. Had it out on a clean waist to shoulder day and i'm very satisfied. Paddles like a dream, plenty of speed to get through flatter spots and can easily get vertical when you have a workable section. I rode it as a thruster with a set of Lg performer fins in neo glass for some extra flex. Fun session for sure. But the Phantom looks like a fun stick as well. I might pick one up too, just to give it a go.

Peter.... sorry I missed your question. The Phantom and Sampler are really not comparable. The Sampler is a small wave board 1-3' maybe 4' max and the Phantom is a daily driver for 2-7" surf. The Phantom has a bit more tail rocker and will offer more performance in the pocket and off the bottom.

I would pick the Phantom over the UD and Sampler as a Daily Driver.

oisin186 Stoked you like our show. Not sure we are going to continue doing wetsuit reviews. Not too many surfers watching them and they are a lot of work. We want to focus on surf equipment that surfers want to learn about. We love Wetsuits and find them worthy of a review but our community doesn’t seem to be to into them.
