Ahh when I saw pyzalien I thought you got your hands in a pyzalien 2 was pretty excited .. I had a pyzalien a while ago I really liked it , it was my first pyzel board it was a custom I felt like I ordered it a little big but it was amazing , I would catch so many waves with ease on this board , I went thru a lot of different fin setup with this board cause nothing felt that great till I tried the old futures honeycomb HS fins those fins made the board feel amazing , medium John Johns felt really good too at 190lbs .. the HS generation fins weren’t out yet but I rode them in my friends pyzalien that was a inch taller then mine and a squash tail instead of swallow tail and that felt really good and really fast , im sure the jack freestones would work really well in that board .. I always thought a stringerless epoxy pyzalien would be gold.

Mathieu Revel I was surfing 3-5 Haleiwa . And a bunch of spots of the west side Oahu the were 1-4 I’m 190 6feet tall I had a 6’0 custom 33.5L board , def thought about ordering another one in his eps construction electralite in like a 5’11 and a little thinner

I m 6'2 185 and rode min in 6'0 stock dim, 31.3L, paddled better than board at 32L, definitely due to the foam upfront. For people interested they should ride it a bit below their standard shortboard volume. Agree with you, I was catching a lot of wave with the board but I usually don't have much issue catching waves. Medium JJ fell good but lack of drive, I agree with that as well. Where do you surf ?

Mathieu Revel yea I tried am2 did not like it .. I was getting so much drive with the old Hayden shape fins , like no pumping flying across waist high waves. The medium John Johns felt really good with turns and pivot and feel of the board but it lacked a little drive for that board.. I think you need a good upright fin, squash tail if your gonna go a little taller then your height and swallow if you go below your height. It’s also a flat deck so your order I think 1/8 thinner then your standard board.. I usually ride 2 5/8 it 2 9 /16 and I know if I got another it would be 2 1/2 thick .. there’s a lot of foam in the board that made mine feel kinda heavy / tankish feeling so I always felt if I got something like a electralite construction a little shorter it would prob be a magic board.. there’s something with like the nose/chest area where it felt like it had a little more foam or weight which made it drop into waves super early and fast for me.. but they say no board is ever shaped the same so it might just have been how jon shaped that board for me that it felt the way it did.

Funny, i had so many expectation for that board and ..... bummer I really didn't click with it, 185 lbs, tried AM2 and the new John John medium too. It s the only board i ever had that caused me trouble like pumping for speed and at so many turns i would bog the rail and really didnt like steep drop. Took it in indo and it fell better on flat face but Sydney beach break for me no go. Sold it and got a DHD DX1 which I freaking love

Interesting to hear you hated the twin plus trailer fin setup. I have a 6'1" Pyzalien at 32L (I'm 5'10" and 155lbs.) and my favorite fin set up is AM Large and MR Twin small trailer. The board feels faster than a quad and turns better (though I do actually like quad plus knubster trailer as well). And it's hands down way faster and more interesting than the thruster I think – it's not bad as a thruster but compared to the Twin plus Trailer it's almost night and day – there's so much spark and soul with this setup. I'm a pretty average surfer mainly surfing San Diego reefs and points and this board comes out for the 4 foot face to 8+ foot face days. It catches small waves better than I thought it would and feels stable in the bigger waves. I'd encourage others to give the 2+1 a shot and compare. I now run that in my 6'0" Machado Almond Butter as well and works awesome. For those rare days when it's pumping or the wave is really steep I'll switch back to the quad plus knubster for more stability and bite in the face. (My quad is AM Large fronts, Mick Fanning Medium rears, Knubster trailer).

Benny overvolumed his board a bit and he clearly didn’t like as much as I like mine. I love my Pyzalien more with every session. I’m 6’2 170, got 5’11x19.5x2.31 30.1l and it was money.
For fins I really liked it with HS2 Generation medium, really fast setup. And when it’s pumping the JFF Techflex are great. Roberts are a good call as well. AM2s felt good too but only if there’s some push.
Board prefers an open face wave but it’s basically a one board quiver almost up do double overhead, depending on the wave. I can’t recommend it enough. Very playful, fun and fast board. No need for more and more wide over hyped and over marketed hybrid boards. There’s a reason these never pop up on Craigslist. People rarely sell them because they love them. Of course not everyone clicks with the design, but if you aren’t sure, give one a try.

I've been really stoked on mine and just posted a comment specifically about loving it as a 2+1 (AM2s and MR trailer). I'll have to see if there's a HS2 equivalent in FCS as an alternative to my AM2s.

Overall i share your feeling, I found it did not perform so well in small surf vs other small wave board and it doesn't perform as well as a shortboard in bigger condition. I know a lot of people love this board but for our Sydney beach I think there are much more suitable boards out there. Took it in indo and it worked well on flat face but not in our local beach break. Some waves fell good some others fell bad, strange feeling overall... kept the board for 4 - 5 months only. I had weird surf with this board overall.

Step down for a good surfer. Not as good when ridden at even a mid volume. I've owned 4. You want them small and you need to be comfortable on a shortboard to make the best of it. Great for waist to overhead barrels you just have to have the skills and size right.
