Steph - thanks for the extra info. You could get away with a fairly small board (as small as 26L) with your weight and skill level, but since you're positioning this for mostly mushy small waves, you are okay to go with a little more size and float. You want a board you can fit in your car, but don't go ridiculously short, as you don't want too much of your body dragging behind you when you paddle. I'm thinking something closer to 30L volume would be great for what you need.

Finding a Happy Shovel will be hard as there aren't too many around any more, they're mostly custom orders these days. Good substitute for you for a board you could buy immediately would be:

Used for mostly mushy knee high waves a couple times a month. Surfing for about 20 years on and off. I have a 6'10" fun shape that is more like a longboard for me, but want something with more punch...narrower rails, but small wave maneuverability and travel friendly so I can put it into the car easily.

How would this board relate to the other boards in your quiver, or would this be your only board? It's just like cars, computers, shoes etc... new stuff comes out and the old stuff gets harder to find. As far as the construction goes, it's all about your personal preferences. The EPS/Tuflite style Happy Shovels won't have much flex so it will be a stiffer, skatier ride. You'll get a slight buoyancy boost as the EPS is a little floatier by volume compared to PU/Poly. I personally prefer the feel of PU/Poly but all constructions have their place in the water, just depends on personal preference. Hope this helps! -Chris +real watersports

+ZmannR2 - Glad the info is helpful. Vapors has a good wave range but like you most surfers will want something below it in their quiver as more of a pure groveler. One thing to note is Happy Shovels are getting harder to find (we haven't had any in stock in a hot minute).
