Rusty Surfboards "The Heckler" Review by Noel Salas Ep. 25

This video is about "The Heckler" by Rusty surfboards. Noel found out that The Heckler was a nominee for the Sima Surfboard awards in the Alternative category for 2017. He phoned up the folks at Rusty to see if he could get one to review. They agreed to give him a demo board to review and the DIMS are 5'3" x 20.12 x 2.16 Volume 26.7. The board was tested in 2-4 surf and Salas said it was fast, and responsive. A few key features of The Heckler are the flat deck, Venturi channel, wing in the tail, and the beak nose. The flat deck allows for maximum foam to be carried out to the rails for great flotation. This is key for a small wave Groveler to maximize floatation down the line and paddle power. Rusty has implemented a special channel that starts in the belly of the board in two half moon shapes. These two channels start wide begin to narrow 4-6 inches in front of the two side fins. This narrowing channel is supposed to create the Venturi effect. The theory is take the water coming through the bottom of the board and channel it to narrowest section to create a low pressure that will then create thrust as the channel begins to widen behind the fins, and through the tail. This is supposed to create speed, control, and flow from rail to rail. Salas mentioned that he felt all of these features happening while he was riding the Heckler and he could see why it was a nominee for Alternative surfboard of the year. The wing in the tail make for a good pivot point as the tail narrows. Salas relates the outline of The Heckler to an ordinary fish type design but the wing, and Venturi concave make it a bit more high performance in the pocket. The beak on the nose pack this little package full of foam to help with paddling. Salas also said even though this board is super wide and has great flotation it still flows rail to rail smoothly because of the Venturi channels which create a lot of Vee out the tail. Here is what the Rusty Website has to say about The Heckler: New for 2016, the Heckler is a Fish with some new ideas. We've utilized a "fishy" outline with a shallow dovetail and pronounced wing to produce a lightening fast small wave wonder. The proven Venturi bottom design that has been so well received on two of our other models, the Rooster and the Hustler, adds a new dimension for fishing and Fish lovers.

Just bought this used without really knowing nuch about it; it was a replacement/cheap groveler as my main groveler is in the shop.

And I did not think that big "Venturi" channel would make a huge difference but I have to say this is by far the fastest board I've ever ridden haha. And it's REALLY responsive. At my skill level I didn't think this board would feel levels better than any other well-reviewed board I've ever gotten but this was truly a cut above all the other grovelers I've ever owned. It's realllly responsive for it being this sort of small-wave board and that Venturi effect is the real deal. I couldn't explain this dramatic increase in speed.

Between the Lost Puddle Fish and the Rusty Heckler what would you recommend for 1-3 foot beach breaks ?, I saw both of your reviews and I can't decide which one to purchase. the board will be used in southern California

Ryan The Rock The Heckler is a small wave board... 1-3’. I heard the Short Round can handle a little more surf. I recommend the Uber Driver for small wave performance surfing.

So I just got this board and I was wondering how it would float me in the dimensions I got so I was wondering if I put it in a pool will I damage the board ? I was just wondering how it floats me and I’m in az also I understand that salt water floats you better but I have to know because I’m getting another board around the same volume before I get to California to surf

From what I know about the Rusty Zeppelin it's more of a big guy small to medium wave board. I have not ridden the Zeppelin because it does not fit my build and skill level. However if you are a bigger guy then you might really like it. The thought of wearing a 6/5 wetsuit in colder water you might want to consider adding at least 1 full liter of volume to your board in the winter time. A 6/5 full suit will most definitely add some weight and lesson your flexibility. I hope this helps.... Cheers!

first and foremost this is the the best board review channel on the web, really great insights and of course being able to see the board work is priceless . I was wondering that out of all the grovellers out there , ( that you have reviewed or just surfed ) which would you consider to the best allrounder or one board quiver i.e most capable of handling some size and hollowness. Would the heckler fit this bill say over the dwart ? - thanks

Yasser Saiyad Stoked you like the show!!! The Heckler is a super fun board and a great Groveler. I think it's good in 1-3 feet and I have not ridden the Dwart. I think the CI Pod Mod is sick and it can handle som hollow waves too. Have a look at that review and see what you think.

Hey Noel!

You say it would be awesome to try this board in 5'6 by 19 1/4 wide or something like that, which it's almost the stock dims of the Hustler (similar fishy outline but narrower, same venturi bottom, etc), have you tried this model? If not, do you think you would like it more?

And in the other hand, could you tell me your thoughts about the new Go Fish by Machado?

I'm between this three models for my summer board here on the european beaches, just looking for a groveler that still performs, hope you can help me!

Cheers and keep the show going on, awesome job buddy!

I really enjoyed surfing the Rusty Heckler and I think the Hustler does fit the description I was thinking of ordering the Heckler custom. The Hustler could be a great board but I would need to touch and feel it to see how they are distributing the foam to know if that board would work good for me at that length. The 5'3" Heckler felt good but when I ride boards that short for a couple of weeks it really messes with my stance by narrowing it and adjusting to my longer boards could take me a couple of sessions. The Go Fish by Rob Machado looks epic and I would love to give you some feedback on it but I have not even touched one yet. It looks really fast and fun but.... not sure what it would surf like performance wise but I am frothing to ride one. Wish I could be more help to you sorry.

Hey Noel,

Your reviews are awesome. Really love the content that you're putting out - and you shred!

Question:

Are the Mick Fanning's that you're running on this size Large? I'm curious because I'm currently surfing a Lost Puddle Jumper (5'4 stock dims) and running Medium Performer FCS II Fins. I feel like I could use a bit more fin for added drive since the board is so small and the tail is really wide. I'm 5'9 and about 150lbs.

What other fins do you think would work well with a wide-tail groveler model? I've also been eyeing the FCS MR Twin fin / Thruster set up with the stabilizer fun in the middle. Have you ever tried that set-up?

Thanks!

Hey Noel, another quick question. Since both fins are pretty pricey I'll probably only get one for now. If you had to pick between the MR Twin Fin set or the Mick Fanning's, which would you go with? This is predominantly for weaker, wind swell surf in the 1-4ft. range. I'm already running a set of Performer FCS II fins in my Lost Puddle Jumper, but they're Mediums and I feel that they lack drive. Thanks brother!

My Mick Fanning fins are Large and I think they will go great in your Lost board.

I do have the MR Twin Fin set and they are epic. Take a few minutes and watch the JS Nitro review and you will see them in action. Both the MF Large and MR Twin Fin sets will maximize the drive!!! Enjoy and let me know what you choose and how they go!!!

I've loved my Rooster (their better wave version). I'm on the OBX, NC and use it for the 4 ft plus days. I swear those channels work! Weight forward and the board is a rocket...shift foot to back of pad and it turns on a dime. Tail rocker flips up the last few inches where the channels exit the tail.

Those double concaves use the Venturi effect to create a powerful hydraulic jet engine which powers your board not just through sections, but also right out into the lineup, like a jet ski. You'll never have to paddle again. And you'll never have to buy any gas either, because the Venturi effect operates on the laws of perpetual motion.

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 4 years ago
That's a tough question.... I like them both and they felt very similar in their flow and speed. I think I would go with the Pod Mod in Flexbar!! On the Other hand I wonder how this Heckler would go in Rusty's new Torsion Spring construction????I am really into all of the new constructions coming out and I would want my Grovelers to be in a super light and strong construction. But they do need to have good flex & feel.

Thanks for the comments and sorry if I seem excited about this little board. I did say that I could see why The Heckler is a nominee for a surfboard award.

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 4 years ago
Yea Duncan thanks for commenting.... I did notice similar characteristics to the Bonzer's I have been riding but they did not feel exactly the same under my feet. The Biscuit Bonzer felt a bit faster down the line but this Heckler felt a little smoother rail to rail. However I did slow down a bottom turn on both the Bonzer 5 Shelter and this Heckler and the water flow was coming off the back of the board in a very similar spray pattern. These two bottom contours could be similar in theory from a shapers perspective but I am just the test pilot trying to explain how they function and what they felt like under my feet. Cheers!!!!
