Sevylor HF 250 Boat & 18LB Trolling Motor Review & Test!

Took the Sevylor Fish Hunter HF 250 3 person boat out for two days of fun and fishing. This boat can hold up to 600 pounds. The max weight I had in it was 2 adults, plus gear equaling about 450lbs. It seemed just fine with 450lbs and it could hold more; however, there is little space for more. The trolling motor also amazed me. I had read it was very weak. Although it doesn't go very fast, I had no problem slowly trolling around the lake and even pulling 300+ pounds of weight (2 inner tubes with 3 small adults), and that was with 2 adults in the main boat. All in all, great boat and trolling motor setup as long as you don't expect too much!

How many miles do you think you can go on a single charge ? Was that 1.5 hours of constant use ?
Earthling1984
Earthling1984 - 5 years ago
@polymful Yes

@Earthling1984 What is AH stands for, Amp Hours?
Earthling1984
Earthling1984 - 5 years ago
@polymful If you want to go long distances gas probably would be your best bet. Batteries get pretty heavy the larger you get. I mean, you could get a 100AH or larger battery, but, it will be very heavy.

@Earthling1984 Thanks for replying. The thing is that I don't fish. I need the motor to move longer distances, and I am debating whether I should buy this electric motor or a some cheap gas engine. How long do you think you would be able to go on a larger deep cycle battery ?
Earthling1984
Earthling1984 - 5 years ago
I would for sure recommend a larger deep cycle battery. I now use a 40AH battery and it lasts well over an hour, probably close to two hours straight. So, I can fish for like 6 to 8 hours, moving to different spots here and there. I like to bring the small battery as a backup, in case larger battery dies; but, have not needed it yet. No matter what battery you go with, for sure always bring a small spare that will get you back to shore.

man idk anythign about motors im buying a blow up boat like this but dont know what all i need t buy to install a motor on it though

@Earthling1984 appreciate the reply idk anything about boats ill b doing it completely alone id like to have a better boat than a inflatable but my god even a 6 foot tiny 2man boat is 600 bucks online its highway robbery lol im to afraid to put a blow up boat in my local creek if it snags a tree and bust

so for putting a motor on a blow up boat you need to buya trolling motor anda motor mount right
Earthling1984
Earthling1984 - 5 years ago
The motor mount will attach to the back of the boat. It will be like a flat board that the motor connects to. The motor simply clamps onto the board (takes just a few seconds to attach a motor to a motor mount)
Earthling1984
Earthling1984 - 5 years ago
If you get a different boat, just make sure that it is trolling motor compatible, and, that you can easily buy the motor mount for it.
Earthling1984
Earthling1984 - 5 years ago
Get a minn kota 30 or 35 thrust. This motor was ok, but, not anywhere near as good as a minn kota. You can get a motor mount for this specific boat that will allow you to attach pretty much any trolling motor.

What do you use for bag to store or transport? Also, deflating the tunnel valves are a pain. Is there a better way to deflate than to squeeze the nipple? Thanks!

Earthling1984 I like your setup but I also thought that the batteries are heavy without much capacity. I also dont like reaching back for the motor handle so I'm trying to solve these issues now. Heres my video. Please tell me if you have any ideas. https://youtu.be/Kh9SOtsujDw

Batteries are crap. I use between 20 and 40 AH deep cycle batteries now. These little Chinese batteries crap out very fast.

I bought the Fish Hunter 360 last summer. It does not have the motor. I am not as good as you to personalize it that good. I just want to buy an electrical boat and a battery so I can go fishing coming summer. Can you tell me what type of motor and battery should I buy?
Earthling1984
Earthling1984 - 6 years ago
Well, not a horrible idea, but, $100 is way too much! Maybe for $50 or so I'd say buy it. You can get a Minn Kota Endura C2 30 on amazon right now for $99.99 brand new with free shipping. So, depends what you can talk him down to.
Abdullah Barak
Abdullah Barak - 6 years ago
is it a good idea to buy a used motor like this one for sale in my city {Minn Kota Endura 30 Trolling Motor 12v 5spd asking $100 or less}
Earthling1984
Earthling1984 - 6 years ago
Also, check Amazon (or other online source, or store) and find the motor mount. I didn't use it with this original motor. But, you will want it for sure. Much easier to use.
Earthling1984
Earthling1984 - 6 years ago
*I upgraded.
Earthling1984
Earthling1984 - 6 years ago
U upgraded. Go with a Minn Kota for sure. A smaller 30lb thrust will work great for this light boat. Check out what Minn Kota's are available. You can often find sales on websites like amazon (or at least lower pricing than stores). As for a battery. Really any deep cycle, or, marine battery is good. Don't get a standard lead acid, make sure to get a deep cycle. The larger the better, but, also the heavier. So, it will depend how long you need to run the motor. Around 30AH should give you a good 2 hours of motor run time. Always bring a spare 2nd battery (get a smaller 10AH batter - or around that size), to use as in case your first battery dies while you are out there.

thanks Earthling1984 for your prompt reply!! i was asking you because the min kota motors are f***ing expensive here in switzerland. and as I have the sevylor 360 inflatable boat, it would perfectly fit. im not gonna use it for fishing, just to have a nice little troll and to chill with some friends...
Earthling1984
Earthling1984 - 7 years ago
thecognac I used it a few more times, but, have since upgraded to a minn kota. The Sevylor motor never failed (in the 10 or so times I used it), but, it was pretty slow. It worked, but, to get around larger lakes a more powerful motor was needed. If you just plan to go on ponds and small lakes, this motor may work good for you. I found the minn kota with a 40AH battery work better for me on larger waterways.

Earthling1984 do you bring paddles just in case?
Earthling1984
Earthling1984 - 7 years ago
niall441 Batteris aren't bad. I now use a 50lb thrust minkota motor with a 40AH battery(for this boat and also I often rent boats I put this on). Can fish all day and zoom around anywhere. I just bring one small battery of around 12AH as backup; incase big battery gets low I can still get back to shore.

Isn't a deep cycle battery and real trolling motor REALLY heavy for this boat or a kayak though?
Earthling1984
Earthling1984 - 8 years ago
May I suggest though. Get a real motor from MinnKota. A 30lb would be good. This Sevylor motor is ok, it does work, but, for not much more cost a 30lb MinnKota will really make a huge difference. Plus, MinnKotas you can get parts for (props if you break one, etc). This motor you can't service, if you break it, pretty much out of luck. Mine still works, but, I have since got a MinnKota so I've only used the Sevylor motor like 5 times, and now it's sat in storage. Also, get something around a 30 to 40AH deep cycle battery. These little batteries worked ok for a while, but since they aren't deep cycle, they stopped working pretty quick.

Tips:  ALWAYS tie a tether to the motor as the power cables may pop off if the boat flips.  (unlikely)  Measure the current to the motor at full power.  Amperes used, divided into battery ampere hours = run time max.  (W/fully charged batteries)

Looks damn good! I've been looking around for one, and this one seems to fit the bill and can't go wrong for the price. What really impressed me is the amount of weight it pulled with little or no struggle/performance drop. Thanks

That was more about the motor.  The boat would be fine.  If the motor isn't powerful enough can easily upgrade to other motors on the market for not much more cost than Sevylor motor and more power.
Earthling1984

It might be, especially in calm water.  If too windy, and heavy net, may not do so well.

But I must say, even with Jay (almost 250LBS) and me (about 150LBS) plus some gear + batteries equaled about 450LBS, and I still felt like this boat could support more weight, although space was limited it was plenty sturdy.
Earthling1984
Earthling1984 - 11 years ago
Agreed. Maximum 2 if you want to us for fishing or carrying any supplies. If you just want go to out and have fun, you could fit 3 adults in it (sitting sideways like me and Jay were)... of course you would have to pull around another tube with a cooler of beer :)
