SharpEye "Modern 2 Fusion E2" Surfboard Review by Noel Salas EP. 42

The SharpEye Modern 2 surfboard is such a sick little board. I tested it in 1-4' surf as a Thruster and as a Twin Fin with a small trailer. It is loaded with volume for great paddling and extremely fast down the line. It also has a pulled in tail and a bit of tail rocker to jam it in the pocket like a performance board. Enjoy the full review as I break down the Modern 2 board design and the new Fusion E2 construction by Surftech. This is a great collaboration and this construction fits this board perfect.

Thanks for adding the Toledo experience. I was gonna get a 5'6" but now I know I need a 5'10" 180lbs. Which you liked better? 5'4" or 5'6"?

Do you think the Merrick 2+1 twin fin setup would be better than the MR twin fins on the Modern 2 on the waves you tested the board in?

b navarrete I like the MR’s better in that board. The AMt’s are a bit to upright and make that board too loose.

Felipe Segatto do Carmo I would say the Modern 2 is better in 1-3’ surf... the Monsta Box is more of a daily Driver in 3-5’ surf.

Noel. I'm on the fence between the 5'8 (31.6L) and the 5'10 (34.2) modern 2. I usually ride around 33L. Do you recommend I go with more or less volume?

Hi, sick review... I bought a Pod Mod a year ago and I love it.. its still pretty much intact as I only surf it at mushy pointbreak like waves. However I want to give it a twist, ¿How do you think a Pod Mod would work with the Twin plus small trailer setup?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Carlos A Ramos S S Pod Mod is epic for sure. Not sure why don’t you try it and report back to all of us. You be the test pilot in this one... cheers!!!

Thanks Noel, I just rode my Modern 2 for the first time. I’m running the Merrick twin plus 1 setup. I held them up to the MR twin fins and they are very similar but the slimmer tip on the Merrick’s really lets you load up more quickly when you’re pumping for speed in sub par conditions. The V in wider boards is key which I why I went with this over the Merrick Twin but I got it two inches longer for float - this is the magic board at 6’2- I’m 200 lbs in a wetsuit. You are hands down the best board reviewer, THANK YOU!

Quick question. How is the board in regards to durability.  I find that I pressure dent my PU boards quite easily comparing that to my Firewires, they are rock solid.  Is the Fusion e2 closer to PU or Firewire.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
Thom Ye The FireWire LFT and HE constructions are pretty durable. The Fusion E2 is in between the PU and the FireWire LFT. PU’s are pressure dent pretty easy and I think a regular EPS foam blank is roughly 20-30% stronger when it comes to pressure dents. The HE by FireWire is the most durable and has the best flex compared to anything else I have tested.

How u compare the modern2 and the rocket9?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
djpipe1 The Modern 2 is more of a Groveler and super fun in 1-3+. The Rocket 9 feels more like a short board and goes good in 2-6’+ surf. When you see both of these two boards in person side by side they look and feel completely different. The volume in the nose and chest area on the Modern 2 makes it a legitimate small wave board.

What Channel Islands board would you recommend for the following conditions? An outside peak with 4-5 ft. faces that are slopey to medium steep that breaks into a flat spot, then reforms into 1-2 ft. face that is slopey to medium steep. I have a 5'2"x18 3/4"x2 1/4" squash tail, high-performance, small-wave board and my weight varies between 150-160 lbs. I may be too heavy for this board. It works best for me on reef breaks and it paddles into waves best for me under the lip. I have to pump hard and plenty to get through flat spots and this board pivots in a very short space. When I frontside cutback to rebound, it happens very fast as though it happens in the same space. I like to feel the rail engage a bit more. I also have to back off a bit when doing backside snaps because it feels like it's going to fly out if I go vertical.

Surf n Show Reviews Thanks! The B & W has similar qualities to the fever. Why don't more Channel Islands pros use it in contests? Zeke switched to the b & w from the rook 15. However, Adriano did win his championship mainly with rook 15s.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
UniqueStranger You could go with the Pod Mod. It will go good in the wave types your talking about and it can surf in the pocket really well to. You could also go with a custom B&W. Low entry rocker with aggressive tail rocker for progressive surfing. This 3 are my favorite.

Hey Noel, Im wondering what the difference is between a rounder template compared to a board with more parallel rails. Perhaps you could start a video series about some of the different board characteristics i.e. tail shape, rockers, fin configurations, and so on. I think they would get a ton of views. Anyhow thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise, it's greatly appreciated.
JRock888
JRock888 - 7 years ago
Surf n Show Reviews That makes perfect sense. Similar to board length.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
A rounder template will have an easier time getting in the pocket compared to a board design with more parallel rails. The board with more parallel outline or rails will be faster down the line though. I hope this makes sense.

Hi, what's the main feeling difference in between this board and the Haydenshapes Untitled one?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
This Modern 2 feels like a true groveler and the Untitled has hidden foam and feels like a small wave performance board. The Untitled is way more progressive in the pocket. The Modern 2 has a performance feel for a Twin Fin and goes good in 1-3' surf. I would not choose to ride this Modern 2 in surf over 4' but I would have no problem surfing the Untitled in waves up to 6'. I hope this helps.

Surf n Show Reviews I totally love your channel and I had a question for you. I have been riding the channel islands pod mod (5' 10 and about 38 liters of volume) as my first shortboard for the last year. It works great in little waves but is a little slow when it gets into bigger surf. By the way I am 5 foot 11 and 145 pounds at 13 yrs of age (still growing). I am looking for a board that I can take out in bigger surf more towards the 5-8 foot range. Do you think the channel islands fever would be a good board for that? If so what dimensions would you reccomend. If not do you know of any other boards that would be good for me? (I like Channel islands because I get a 40% discount on boards because my cousins are team riders).

Earthling of the Sea So stoked you like our show. The Pod Mod is so good and yes I think the Fever would be great for you.

One thing concerns me is the volume at 38 Liters on your PM is a lot. When you get on a Fever your gonna have to work hard paddling and the Fever is going to be very loose and responsive compared to your PM. I suggest the 6’1” if this will be your first HP board or a little bigger. Maybe you should consult with your cousins who are team riders to help you too.

Noel how would you compare the lost carbon wrap to this construction? I'm skeptical about a pop out board but the price is right.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 7 years ago
Tony Howell This construction is as good as all the EPS boards I have been testing including the Lost Carbon Wrap. Now the flex and feel is not the same but the quality is there for sure. Each new EPS construction has a little different feel but their strength and quality has been very good for my testing process.

How does board feel under your feet as apposed to the rocket 9?
Surf n Show Reviews

I dont think ive ever seen a convex bottom on a performance shortboard before. Im shaping (or trying to shape) a performance twin fin like this board but i was just gonna do a single to double to v out the tail but maybe i'll give the convex a try. Most of the twin fins ive ridden felt a little sticky going rail to rail so i could see why he did that.
