If you decide to buy somewhere else or would like to support the show, please donate at https://www.paypal.me/surfnshow In this episode I review the Slater Designs “Gamma” in a new technology by Firewire called Helium. I got my hands on two of them… one is 5’6” x 18 7/8 x 2 5/16 Liters 25.5 for more as a daily driver in the 3-6’ surf. The other one is a 5’10” x 18 ½ x 2 5/16 Liters 26.5 for a little bigger surf as a High Performance board in the 5-8’+ surf. Both boards felt great in the 3-6’ surf but since we only got waves in that wave range the 5’6” board looked the best in the footage but the 5’10” felt good too. We just never got the sizeable surf to test it’s range. The new Helium Technology by Firewire has great flex and durability and is second to nothing I have ever tested. After riding the 5’6” for roughly 4 weeks in small to overhead surf I took the wax off the board and to my surprise there was one little pressure dent that I could barely feel with my hand. Most of the time the decks are pretty well pushed in after 4 weeks of testing. With this being said the Flex and feel on the Helium Technology felt great and the durability is now setting the bar for the rest of the boards that I test. Overall the Gamma is an excellent High Performance board that I recommend for the Intermediate to Advanced surfer. The Helium Technology will help this board to perform with great flex longer then a PU board and feel fresh under your feet.

Hey Noel, I have been really enjoying my Gamma in 4-6 foot So Cal days. But I do notice it's limitations in the 2 to 4 foot somewhat mushy days, which are all too common here. I'm looking for a high performance daily driver, that can handle the more average to fun days. Do you think the Holy Grail would provide a similar "Gamma" feeling for the more average days? or any other board suggestions? p.s. thanks for allowing us mortal surfers to "sample" so many boards through you.

MrSnoopful I think the Pyzel Phantom goes excellent in So Cal 2-4’ surf. Another board I like in 2-4’ mush is the CI NB2 or RW. Check those 3 boards out at your local shop. I would go NB2 Spinetek in 2-4’ surf.

What fins would you use in the fcs2 lineup for waves in the head high to a few feet overhead? Am2’s ?
Miguel Marquina
Miguel Marquina - 5 years ago
Surf n Show Reviews Thank you so much for telling me about the fins in the Fcs2 lineup. I put in the HS’s this morning and I could really feel the difference. The board is really drivey, so it makes sense to put a more upright fin to compliment that hip. The waves this morning were headies and the HS fins seemed more flexible than the carbon reinforced performers that I have which I think I will use when it gets a little bit bigger being that the fin has carbon in it

I have ordered a gamma in 5.11 and i am 6.2. the litres are nice in helium like 31.8 L.

I was thinking in having a CI fever, what are the diferences betwenn too boards???
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Xabier xabi Both boards are sick!!! I found the Fever to be a little easier to surf, and it will need less of a wave to get going. It think the Fever has a little less rocker in the belly and entry which makes it paddle a little better and get down the line faster too.

Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
D Brown This Gamma has better flow and needs more of a wave. I am sure the outlines look similar but they do not ride the same. The Gamma is more progressive and is a true HPSB. The NF was just ok for me. I like the OG Flyer better than the NF.

Vanue The LFT is better for all conditions because it has a bit more weight to it. That weight will help you sink the rail faster if your surfing in windy conditions. It will also have less chatter or vibration because of the extra weight. If your looking to buy a Gamma then I recommend the LFT.
Ruben
Ruben - 6 years ago
@Surf n Show Reviews Is there a reason why Kelly choosed that material and is it good for every condition surf? I just surf 5 times a year so I`m an intermediate surfer &also what are the diffrences between Helium and LFT, and which is better for every condition surf? Would nice to hear your opinion about it.

Vanue No... it’s solid but HPSB are very responsive and they can be very demanding and hard to surf.

These Gamma’s felt great under foot but I am used to surfing HPSB.

Erezdekel Erez123123 Gamma needs more of a wave to go good and it’s a bit more demanding. The Phantom is the easiest HPSB I have ever surfed. If your a golfer then the Gamma is like hitting blades... the Phantom has a large sweet spot and is super easy to surf.

Hey neol, sick review so well explained man, gets allot clear,
I am hesitating between getting the 5'10 or the 5'11 in hp dims, i live in south of france with fast and allot of times big beach breaks " hossegore, seignosse...."
I weight 172 pounds for 5'10 in height
Any suggestions cause the 5'10 has 6.5litres and the 5'11 has 8.1L knowing that this board floats well maybee the 5'10 would be better??

Miguel Marquina How much bigger surf? I would go 5’10” in 5’ and bigger and I would choose the 5’8” in 3-5’ surf. The 5’6” worked pretty good but the 5’8” would have been better for me. I rode what Firewire sent me. If your going to be riding the Gamma in bigger surf then I would buy it in LFT not Helium too. You will want the extra weight in bigger surf.

Hi Noel, before nothing, thank you very much for your work!!! HELPS A LOT to those who do not have the possibility to try or see in person the different surfboards that are on the market today..... I want to ask you a questions in function to your experience:

1) The boards in HELIUM, at the same amount of liters, are more bouyancy than FST (FIREWIRE) OR CARBON WRAP (LOST).
2) HELIUM is stronger (durable) than CARBON WRAP?
3) I´m analyzing buying a board FOR GOOD WAVES (CHEST TO HEAD +). I am in doubt between GAMMA 5.9" or UBER DRIVER 5.9". Which do you think is better for that range ...... I already have a FIREWIRE DOMINATOR FST for small waves

I´m 5.75" - 145-150lbs - Beach break Surfing

THANK YOU VERY MUCH. AND FORGIVE FOR THE EXTENSION OF THE QUESTION.
Javier Hernando Rodriguez

Thank you very much!!!. You are very helpful... i will take a look at lost driver in CW.!!
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Javier Hernando Rodriguez The Buoyancy is roughly the same between the Helium and CW.

The Helium is a bit more durable... way less pressure dents compared to the CW.

The Gamma would be better out of the two boards for the wave range you are seeking. I think a better board match up is the Lost Driver and the Gamma. The Driver is easier to ride compared to the Gamma. All three boards are epic and you cannot go wrong with any of them.

Cheers and I hope this helps. Stoked you like our show!!!! Yewww

captainkoz Holy Grail is the most versatile for waves in 1-6+. The Gamma and SJX need a wave to go good... 3-6’+. The N Flyer has too much rocker for my likings in small waves... it needs 3-6’ surf too. The HG goes mental in everything... beyond 6’ I would switch to a HPSB. Cheers

Surf n Show Reviews , thank you very much for your time and recommendation... But I’m a bit curious about what do you think about Medina FCS 2 fins? Do you think it work also ?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Caetano Stoked you like our show!!! The Reactor is a very upright fin so it will pivot quickly and make your board very loose and responsive. If you want more drive in small waves get a fin with a bit more sweep or rake to it. It will give you more drive and draw out your turns a bit compared to the Reactors. I recommend the Kolohe Andino fin... not too much rake and not too upright either. Lots of speed and won’t make your feel tight or hard to turn. Cheers

Shawn Weston The Gamma is not a Groveler and I don’t recommend it for 1-3’ surf. It needs a good wave to go. The Sampler is really fast down the line and I highly recommend it in 1-3’ surf. The Rocket 9 is good in 2-6’ surf... it will grovel in 1-3’ surf if you run a 2+1 set up. (Twin fin + small trailer) I would go Sampler out of the 3 boards you mentioned. Cheers

You look good on this one !  I unfortunately snapped my lovely fever last week end... so devastated...this board fell so good, need another board, for the 3 to 5 foot, I kind of hesitate to try the gamma or to re-order the fever cause it worked so well for me. You reckon it s risky to go with the gamma considering I had the fever ?

Alternatively a local shop is selling the board in 6'1 at a very fair price, comes down to 30,8L, you reckon there will be a big difference in paddling with the 6'2 I used to own (32.4L) ?
Mathieu Revel
Mathieu Revel - 6 years ago
that makes a lot of sense, what kind of dims would you recommend to be more or less between 31.5 to 32.4 ? considering i ll take this board from 2 foot plu punchy / anything from 3 foot
Surf n Show Reviews

Mathieu Popey The linger Board will draw your turns out and it will feel like your turning in slow motion. A good example... a shorter board is like driving a sports car... more responsive.

I m a bit worried to mess up the original design / performance of the board playing wiht dims. 32L seems to be a good literage for me, i m 188cm 84 85kg, what are the drawbacks to surf a 6'2 you reckon ?

haha maybe the gamma could do the job, I have a neckbeard for smaller stuff, just a bit weird that it gets pretty high in volume quickly for such a performance shortboard, i kinda of like more length to get in the waves earlier, i d need to go 5'11 on the gamma while i m on 6'2 for the fever

Hey Noel. I was wondering weather the shorter wider gammer feels too similar to the city sampler. I really want to get the gamma in those dims but was not sure if it felt to much the same. Great show. Keep them coming
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Michael Pemberton The Gamma is a HP board and it has that feel too. It needs a good wave with some push to go good. The waves need to be 3-8’ for to perform.

The Sampler is a small wave board and goes good in 1-3+ surf. The Sampler is pretty flat rocker wise and can get speed on small waves unlike the Gamma.

If I could get another Gamma I would get the 5’8” in The Daily DIMS.

How would you compare this to the Hayden Shapes Holy Grail ?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Surfdocsteve No comparison in my book... the Gamma is a High Performance Board and the HG is more of a daily Driver. HG will go good in 1-6’ surf and the Gamma is 3-6+ maybe 8’ surf. The Gamma is not a Groveler and struggles in small waves.

When was the last time you reviewed a local?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Yea Guy thanks for reaching out... I think the last local shaper review I did was on Lost Surfboards (San Clemente, CA) I also did one on the Magic Mix by Super Brands (Carlsbad, CA) a few of months ago. I am currently working on a review right now on the Ghost by Pyzel Surfboards (HI). Some other local shapers I am starting to work with is Chemistry Surfboards (Oceanside CA), Album Surfboards (San Clemente, CA), XTR Surfboards (Oceanside, CA). I am doing my best to review boards that our community is asking for and boards that I am interested in. Most of the boards that I am choosing to review are from the major brands because it helps surfers world wide (larger scale) do to You Tube's global presence..

Doing reviews on Local shapers is very important to us too and we understand that it helps out our local community and the families it provides for. I just wanted to respond to your comment so you know where Surf n' Show is coming from. Cheers!!!

So how's it work as a quad?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
William Blaze Sounds like a pretty fun challenge and I will ride more boards as Quads but I won’t give up thrusters... sorry. I will even ride try my HP boards as Quads... for turns emblem though I think they don’t pivot as good as a thruster. Cheers
William Blaze
William Blaze - 6 years ago
So you only see quads as being good for barrels? That's too bad. I haven't rode a thruster in years. I ride quads in everything and find they work way better in all conditions. I'm sure if you simply rode every board you have or tired as a quad for the next year, let your surfing adjust to being on a quad,  you would never ride a thruster again. The funny thing also is the only time I can ever see using a thruster is in hollow waves where I don't need to generate speed, but I actually need to go slower to not outrun the tube. I challenge you (as I have before) to ride every board you review this year as a quad, and lets see what happens after a year. And remember it's all about the back fins with quads. Smaller back fins for smaller days, bigger for bigger. Cheers.

William Blaze I did not ride it at as a Quad. I would only ride a High Performance Board as a Quad for barrels.

Great review! That 5'6" looks solid under your feet! You should do a review on the LFT Omni. Great board with a ton of glide. I've been riding the 5'2" and it has been really fun, it's a super fast board that turns really well on rail!

Wow that 5'6" looks electric under your feet mate.. Must be one of the best ones in the last year or so looking at how it goes. I have a Chumlee and the Helium is one tech that's got really great damping even though it's super light. It's nice to see the manufacturers really starting to get it right with the control of flex on the epoxies. I think of flex and importantly control of flex to be like a car damper if you just have a spring it's returns way too fast but with damping that return of flex is controlled snd gives you good spring back that's still controlled.. I think the big players with the Helium, carbon wrap, Hi-Fi and dual core etc are really using materials strategically placed to do a good job.. I'm stoked with my Chumlee and Carbon Wrap Puddle Jumper just wish we had waves like yours to use them in ;-) Great review as always. Really look forward to these... Super detailed and the presentation is really polished now so thanks heaps for putting your time into bringing all this great content to us :-)

Your keeping a nice pace on those waves with the Gamma Noel. Good to finally see solid footage of this surfboard. How does it compare to the JS Monsta box in terms of drive down the line and turning capability. Do you think it has similar rocker?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
bodhi tree Cheers on the review. This Gamma has more rocker over all compared to the Monstabox and the wave range is larger too. The Gamma is good in 3-6 maybe 8’ and the Monstabox is 2-5 max. The a Monstabox can Grovel the Gamma cannot. The Gamma is a high performance board and needs a wave with some power and The Monstabox is for less then average waves.

Surf n Show Reviews right on Noel ! What are we gonna be riding in 10-15 yrs from now !? The mind boggles . I love all the new technology, the last couple of years have been some great development in flex and materials. As long as it’s fun to ride, I’m interested . Good to have someone like yourself to provide some solid ride reports before possibly shelling out money . Futures bright bro !

Whats the best surf maneuver/turn to learn after the bottom turn? (For both frontside and backside)
Surf n Show Reviews

I say a good carve in the pocket is a good start. Not every wave has a lip to hit so carves are a great maneuver to work on for starters.

Hi noel, great review! was waiting this for a month, totally worth it, I have a blak box II in the hyfi construction, looking for a board for the better days, 4-6 ft hope also 8ft, So if I want the gamma I should go with the HP dims, between gamma and the V3 stealth point break surf 4-8ft, what you think? I am an intermediate, sometimes not so intermidiate. trying to improve my surfing.Very interested in your opinon. cheers from mexico.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
alejandro soto palomares I would go with the 31.5 on this one. It will be more forgiving and paddle better.
alejandro soto palomares
alejandro soto palomares - 6 years ago
awesome!!! thanks for taking the time to answere. I only have one more question, I am between the 31.5 lt or the 29.7 , I feel really confortable in 30 to 32lt, but I was wondering because of the construction, I should get the 29.7 lts I weight 75kg, 165lbs.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
The Gamma will be a great board for the 6-8' point break surf for sure. The Gamma is very responsive and will test your skills as an intermediate surfer. The Gamma is very sensitive to foot placement and is not very forgiving at times but at point breaks I think you are good.

The Lost V3 Stealth is a sick board but I would ride that one in 2-5'+ surf... more for the average days. When it gets a bit bigger like 4-6+ then I would go with the Driver by Lost. Its more like the Gamma in that they are both High Performance boards designed for waves with some power or size.

Noel, thanks for a great show.  Beautiful style in the water.  I was hoping to get some info:  the outline looks similar to the JS Monster Box,  your turns in the water looked similar as well.  Can you give me a few bullet points on the differences in dims (rocker, rails,N/T widths ) as well as construction (HyFi v Helium) Thanks. Ant
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Ant D Stoked you like the review. The Monstabox is a board designed for waves in my opinion in 2-5’ surf. The Gamma has more rocker throughout. The Gamma needs some power to go good and the Monstabox can grovel a bit better. The HYFY construction has more flex compared to the HE Technology with the Springer. The small wave boards by FireWire in HE Technology like the Chumlee or Dominator don’t have the Springer on the deck like the Gamma so they will have more flex for the smaller waves. The durability on the HE is much better compared to the HYFI. The Gamma is a true High Performance Board and the Monstabox is more for those less than average days.

I think a better comparison would be the Gamma to the Monsta 6. Cheers....
