Slater Designs "Sci-Fi 2.0" Surfboard Review by Noel Salas Ep.100

Where to Buy: The Surf Station: https://www.surfstationstore.com/collections/surfboards/products/firewire-sci-fi-2-0-lft-surfboard Surfboard Empire: (Aus & NZ Only) https://surfboardempire.com.au/collections/firewire/products/firewiresci-fi20 Surf Ontario: (Canada Only) https://surfontario.ca/collections/slater-designs/products/firewire-slater-designs-sci-fi-57-sci-fi-lft-fut In this episode I put the new Slater Designs “Sci-Fi 2.0” through the paces in 2-6’ Surf. My board testing started in 3-4’ surf that had some push and the Sci-Fi 2.0 did not disappoint. The most notable changes for me in the Sci-Fi 2.0 from the Original Sci-Fi is the narrower tail with increased exit rocker, and 1” shorter in length. All three of these changes give the Sci-Fi 2.0 a high-performance upgrade in the pocket and extended the wave range to 3-8’ surf n a shorter package compared to the OG Sci-Fi. A couple other changes to the Sci-Fi 2.0 that were not as noticeable to me is the wide point shoved forward, and increased depth of Tomo’s Quad Inside Single Concave for greater lift and responsiveness. I found the Original Sci-Fi to be faster down the line in smaller mushy surf due to it having a wider tail with less rocker. If you loved the performance of your OG Sci-Fi, then you will be stoked on the upgrades with the 2.0. These changes put the Sci-Fi 2.0 in the HPSB category, and I highly recommend it for intermediate – pro level surfers. After reviewing a stock 5’6” and 5’5” in this review I liked the 5’6” better due to 1” more rail line to increase drive through turns and the extra float did not hinder performance or agility in tight transitions. If you are stuck choosing between two stock sizes…. I suggest the bigger one. The changes made in the Sci-Fi 2.0 make it very responsive and user friendly and the extra foam is your friend on this model. My Height: 5’9” My Weight: 160 lb or 72.57 kg Stock DIMS Tested: 5’5” x 18 3/8 x 2 ¼ (24.9L) 5’6” x 18 5/8 x 2 5/16 (26L) Recommended Fins: Thruster: Naked Viking Surf “Peregrine” (Pivot Fins) Quad: Large Peregrine Side fins / Pyzel Medium Quad Rears.

Hey Noel, great review as always, how would you compare performance wise, the Sci-Fi 2.0 to the Cymatic?
Also any plans on doing a review on the El Tomo Fish?

martinwajda SciFi 2.0 has more tail rocker compared to Cymatic. It’s a bit more high performance... Still waiting for boards on the El Tomo Fish

Hi Noel, Thanks for another great review! A bit disappointed not to see a comparison to the Cymatic. I layed them side by side at my local shop and to me it looked as if the SciFi 2 is just a Cymatic with a pointy nose. The rockers looked the same to me. To the naked eye at least. What do you think? Did FW tell you how the two differ? BTW. I now own a Cymatic, haven,t had it in the water yet however. Looking fwd to it though! Your review was helpful in choosing that board, so thanks.

I recieved a new cymatic 5'5" yesterday and surfed it today in solid 3-4ft. Setup as Noel recommends, performers with reactor quad rears. Goes fast, holds well and turns on a dime. Amazing so far. I also have a 5'5" Omni and you can notice the difference in the way they surf. Both are good.

Nice Noel !!! which one you prefer Cymatic or this new Sci Fi 2.0 ?
thanks

Surf n Show Reviews - 4 years ago
David Almeida as a daily driver / HPSB I would choose the Cymatic. If I were surfing a hollow wave or bigger surf then I would choose the the SciFi 2.0. It has more rocker so it will offer more hold in bigger surf compared to Cymatic.

Great review, the comparation with the sci-fi 1 is wowwww. For a guy that is 6’2 and 180 lbs there are no stock dims. FireWire would start makeing more options in this tipe of boards, like in gamma model.

Height doesn't matter at all, it's all about volume. Just because you're 6'2 doesn't mean you can't ride a 5'8. Find the right volume for your weight and go from there.

@Simo thanks yeah cymatic sounds sick will prob get one. There is a second hand seaside in the size down i want so just deciding whether to get that or the cymatic I think

@Tom David Hey Tom , can't go wrong getting the Cymatic ! Having both the Cymatic and Seaside at aprox the same volume , Cymatic was easier to paddle had more drive , worked really well as a 2+1 set up (T1 twin futures) worked better than a quad set up for me . Worked in 1 foot mush to double overhead ! super fun board , improved my surfing heaps after a 10 year break . I have 5'7 Cymatic and a 5'5 Seaside.

Tom David Smaller Seaside sounds good... you might even like it on smaller days too. I say work out the Seaside first... get a 5’9” and try it in some bigger surf. Then try it in some smaller surf and if it goes good in both.... dump the 5’11 Seaside and get something else... or have two Seasides.

Tom David - 4 years ago
@Surf n Show Reviews blinking hecka I don't know what board to get! My current board is a seaside but I got the 511 which for my weight 105kg it's too much foam for when it gets bigger. I'm tempted to downside to a 5'9 seaside to increase its range and use in everything or something else and just use the too floaty seaside as a small wave board. Cymatic was going to be the go but I think if I get something else a thruster might be good for the drivey feel. I like the boards that pack volume into shorter lengths because I dont want to have to go to long. Suggestions?

Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 4 years ago
Tom David P2 is a 1board quiver/ Daily Driver... this SciFi 2.0 is a HPSB so it will offer more performance in the pocket due to more rocker and narrower tail

Great review, as always! Would you suggest this board for a low intermediate level, to be used in glassy conditions ( let's say Bali, Maldives....) head to slightly overhead conditions? At the moment I use Hypto Krypto 6.2 38,4 lt for those conditions, and I feel good. I was thinking about the Sci Fi 6.2 at 38,9 lt. I'm 6.2, 200lbs. Thanks in advance! Alex
