I wonder how they would do on a small river float?

I’d like to use them for hauling camp gear. Are the hulls 3/16th thick or more?

I've been debating on whether to get a kayak...I am one of those big guys you mentioned, but I had a disk in my back do some spinal cord damage a couple of years back, so lets just say I'm not "sure footed". Now not being sure footed shouldn't be an issue when you're sitting in a kayak, but it's the getting in and out that has me concerned. I wen't fishing with my dad in his 17' bass boat...I backed it in for launch, parked the truck and walked out on the dock where he was waiting.....FML that was scary as hell.
I think this is going to be my best bet for on-water fishing, given my limitations. Thank you for your review, and I'd be interested in seeing more vids of cool mods for your boat.

YouTubeFISHINGVIDS thanks! One question....do you hook your battery to the wires on one end and plug your trolling motor into the outlet or just sit your battery at the motor and hook it straight up? I like the idea of using the outlet but I’ll have to find a plug to wire to my trolling motor. At least that might balance the weight out a little better. Thanks again!

Great review..thanks!  Question..I noticed you tipped the boat over from its side at the start of the video. We just got this boat and are looking at our storage options.  I had considered making a little platform made (since it would be on concrete instead of grass) and putting it up on its side, but then I wasn't sure if the integrity of the seams would be an issue, or if it could handle the stress like that.  Do you think storing it on its side could cause problems?  We'll likely cover it and even strap it because we sometimes get high winds...but I don't want to damage the hull, etc by storing it on its side.  Your thoughts?

Ive had 21' Bass Boats and Yaks but love fishing out of my 2-Man. Suggestion: Take your trolling motor partially apart and reverse the direction of the handle as it relates to the motor. This way you face the motor and it pulls you where you want to go. You have much more control this way! Try it!

I got a 36 min Kota and I found a EverStart 29DC Marine at Walmart (waiting for the maxx to come in stock) need a second because I have a livewell on my boat.

I can't find a store with the Schumacher CSX15 and Walmart is out of stock.

I've got an 18ft Lund to do serious fishing out of, but I've also got a little 10ft water-tender boat that I cart around to the small hand-launch bodies of water right near my house. For one person, it gets the job done with just a base 30 thrust Endura. I don't even think that boat is 145 pounds, maybe closer to 120. I wish it was pre-wired like that bass-raider is but I got around that with some crafty battery modifications. I have a quick disconnect now for the battery, with the male plug on the end of the endura. I can plug it into the side of the deep cycle's battery box, and un-plug it when I'm done. Easy enough. No messing around with terminals now.

When I moved up here, I didn't have this little 10 foot boat. I lucked out and have probably half a dozen small bodies of water(with both largemouth and smallies in each of them) right near the house, and I was gonna need a small motor-less boat if I was gonna fish them. Was a great purchase and it's held up great through beating it up through hand launches, and bumping it into stumps.

I weigh 300lbs+ and have been fishing out of this same boat for the past 5 years. There's only two major flaws if you're on the heavier side... First is the hot summertime really softens the plastic and the floor warps while standing. You will have to put hard floors in it to stand comfortably. I used 3/4in particle board, then covered with really good/cheap outdoor carpeting. Hard floors provide great places to attach things like anchor cleats.

The second flaw is the seats are too delicate for a big butt. I used a metal hinged seat from Wal-Mart, removed the plastic seat bottom, and made a new bottom out of 3/4in layered/finishing plywood.

I've been rolling with that setup for a few years now without a hitch.
Jon Penvose
Jon Penvose - 7 years ago
Thank you! I'll definitely check out your video. I appreciate the reply.
Z Noble
Z Noble - 7 years ago
Jon Penvose You shouldn't have any trouble if you build a plywood floor for it and build you a custom wooden seat while you're at it. I posted a vid showing the mods I've made, very helpful for us big dudes. I can stand in the front end close to the battery and trolling motor without problems. The rear does lift up a little but it's not that bad. If someone is fishing with you or if you have anchors, motors and whatnot on the opposite end of the boat for counter weight that helps a lot too.

I'm not gonna lie, the first few trips might seem sketchy but once you get the hang of it and realize how stable it is you'll enjoy it.
Jon Penvose
Jon Penvose - 7 years ago
Hi ZNoble, I'm thinking about getting one of these myself. I'm a big guy too 6'6'' 350ish (heavier in the spring haha). Do you think I'd have any issues sitting/standing towards the rear of the boat? I know it's rated for 500 lbs but I'm not sure they mean nearly 400 lbs in one spot!

I have been watching your videos for a while now. Very good stuff. I have a question. Have you found that a longer casting distance amounts to more bites? I mean if I cast with my spinning reel I can cast 15-20 feet further usually. Do you think casting those 15-20 feet extra amounts to more bites? I'm talking about fishing off the bank mainly?
YouTubeFISHINGVIDS

Most distance allows you to cover more water so you'll have more fish seeing you lure. So yes, you'll get more bites if you can cast farther...

All that weight adds to your stability, and your boat's ability to hold in the wind... I can't imagine trying to stand in the stern of my 70 pound inflatable (same 10' length, but, only about 85 pounds ready to fish). *That says a lot about why you launch on the side you do and I launch on the side I do, eh. ; )
Harbor Freight sells a couple of different small trailers that could easily be set up to hold your boat (the folding one could suit your needs well, without much modification, because your boat is basically flat on the bottom... http://www.harborfreight.com/1195-lb-Capacity-48-in-x-96-in-Heavy-Duty-Folding-Trailer-62648.html ).

Pretty much have the same setup brother haha..Can confirm these little boats are worth the small money they are. I have an 18 ft ranger but i cant take it everywhere and this little boat gets me where the other big boats cant get me. Got this thing for $350 with 40% off at DICK'S. If you dont have the cash for a big boat or u just wanna get into the smaller lakes and ponds that hold some HAWGS buy this boat. Its cheap, throw a troller on bring ur battery and gear and get goin. ONLY thing i recommend is do not get a gas motor. i tried a 2.5. and it bent the back of the transom and i almost sunk in the middle of a lake LOL but not LOL. But yea get this boat and reel em in. Good luck!!

Hey Cornell. A while ago you posted a video and I asked why you were putting swivels with your crank baits. Turns out they were snaps. I also noticed you take the ring off the bait and snap directly to the little ring coming out of the bait. Was wondering why and the pros bs cons. I'm only asking now during your latest vid cause I can't remember that video. Thanks for your channel vids and reviews
YouTubeFISHINGVIDS
YouTubeFISHINGVIDS - 7 years ago
The pros are that you can interchange you baits faster, use less line since you don't retie as often, more time time to fish, no action change and you're more likely to change you baits more often to fine what works since it's so easy to switch baits. Cons...0.

Cornell, first I agree you should have many more subs, really enjoy your channel. Easy for any level of fisherman to connect with. So, I'm close to pulling the trigger on the Pelican. What is the largest body of water you've had it on? And what is the roughest water you've had it on? Is it capable of safety navigating some of the quicker flowing waters that kayaks get into? Not rapids, but I'd like to at least get it out on some of the calmer waters off the beautiful Coosa River near the Jordan lake dam. Thanks!

Thanks for responding Cornell. Academy had the 12' for $500 but it had 3 bench seats and I don't believe it comes with the folding chairs. I'm going to go to Dick's and get the 10 E. I know you said you didn't mount anything permanently, but I'd really like the sonar mounted, but don't want to drill holes in the boat. I'm going to get a similar model unit, any suggestions?
YouTubeFISHINGVIDS
YouTubeFISHINGVIDS - 7 years ago
Thanks Anthony! I've only had it on a small 500 acre reservoir. I've been some pretty high winds that had the lake white capping, but nothing crazy. It handled it like a champ. So long as you don't get in crazy current with a weak trolling motor you should be fine. I'd be more comfortable with a little gas motor added if you decided to get in some heavier current situations. You'll love it!

Recently came across your channel and I really enjoy your videos. Not everyone has a $30k Bass Boat. It's refreshing to see someone doing fishing videos from shore most of the time, proving that you can catch bass walking the shore line. Great incentive for the younger fishermen, or someone brand new to the sport.

I've had my Bass Raider for a few years now and have made 3 modifications/add-ons that has made things very convenient. First thing I did was add a 7 inch pedestal to one of the seats. I'm very tall, and that extra 7 inches makes a world of difference. Not only is it more comfortable on the knees and circulation, it also allows me to sit higher while fishing and be able to see just as well as standing up.

The second mod I made was bolting 4 small D-rings to each gunwale, 2 inside, 2 opposite of them on the outside, with about 4ft between them. That allows me to strap down Rods I'm not using at the moment. I unfortunately learned the hard way that eventually you will knock rods off sitting them on top of those sides. I lost 3 rods at one time having them sitting up there unsecured. I caught a fish and as I was unhooking it, the rod I was using fell and hit the 3 sitting on the side and over they went into 30 feet of water never to be seen again.

The last mod I made was a make shift rod holder that can hold 4 rods. I used lengths PVC pipe that fit snugly in the corner holders on the boat that extended about 3 inches above the plastic bracket. I added a 90 degree elbow to each piece, an between that I have four evenly spaced 4 way cross fittings mounted so the open parts of the fitting are straight up and down. Just stick a rod in and it stands perfectly. Been quite a while, but I believe it was 1 1/4 inch PVC that I was using.

Really enjoy your channel, keep up the good work! I've been thinking about getting one of these for river fishing. My back isn't what it used to be and many of my launch sites are a fair distance from the parking lot so I've been looking at the Bass Baby with the built in wheels, do you know of any dolly systems available for the Bass Raider? (something similar to the Hobie wheels). Also, isn't that the front of the boat where your motor is mounted?

Hey Cornell, i love your videos but I am wondering can you please do a video about how, when, where, why and which different types of line to use? Is mono better for certain conditions? Is braid best because of strength and lack of stretch? Or is fluorocarbon the weapon of choice and why? The lake i fish most often, from the dock, is filled with weeds and lillypads most of the summer so i would like to know what i should be throwing to not break off so often. Very good and helpful information. Thanks for posting. I have been dithering over my choice of pontoon style, canoe, Jon boat, or kayak for a small fishing boat. Leaning towards one of these. All of the options seem to be similar in cost when kitted out. The Pelican and Jon boat are the heaviest options, but the pontoon is the most stable design for similar capacity. I do not foresee portaging my boat often, so the weight is less of an issue in my expected circumstances.

You're going to love having a trailer for the BR. Especially since you fish alone on it 90% of the time like I do. I'm older so it makes it way easier to hit a couple of spots in the same day because you don't have to take the whole thing apart and reassemble again. This will be the third season with my boat. I also run the Endura Max and never even came close to running a group 24 battery down. I average 6 to 8 hrs a trip.

I watch a lot of kayak fishing in salt water. In bays and some will have 2.5 3.5 motors on them.SOME WILL GO OUT Deep on calm days.Do you think the boat would be just as good as a kayak? more money? as stable as kayak or better?I know kayak you can paddle or foot paddle.the boat maybe not.Have you ever used it in ocean water ? And if you can or will say how much they go for? Thanks Jay.
YouTubeFISHINGVIDS
YouTubeFISHINGVIDS - 7 years ago
I've never had it out in big water, but I'm sure it would be fine on calm day. It's way more stable than a kayak! As I mentioned in the video, I seen them sold between $600 & $800 which puts it in the range of some medium to high end kayaks.

I wanna see you load that up on the roof rack and how u tie it down. I have a bass raider as of Dec. and have only used it once due to lack of transportation.

I used to carry a 145 pound or so Penguin sailboat on top of a Plymouth Volare. I could get it up there alone. There is a trick to that.
I think you can find vids of people doing this with laser and sunfish sailboats.

Awesome video! I've been waiting for it for a while because I have the same boat. I run it almost exactly like yours except I bought a Bullnose Rudder for the trolling motor and it helps position the boat quite a bit. Thanks for the video!

Testakillz Beware the guy at Black Hills who wears a Yankees cap and cruises around in a small electric motorboat . He will shadow you, follow you around and loves to leap frog you to fish the shoreline directly in front of you, the direction you are going. When I figured this out I would motor toward a different point to fish. He would take notice, stop fishing and then motor over to the same point to beat me. One day he pissed me off doing this for over an hour I decided to just leave. Another time I put my boat away and decided to fish from shore at the boat ramp and he decided to cross in front of me where I was casting. Either totally oblivious or a total jerk.

I'll be modifying a 1974 14ft Sea Sprite tri-hull boat this spring. Got the boat from a friend for free and been upgrading here and there. Once I finish, I'll take a short video and post in here. The next time your at your in-laws place, maybe swing up to southeastern WI for a great time fishing a friend's pond. There's some 5 lbers in there...fun stuff. Would be great to fish with you. ;-)
