Hey there! Great videos! Any recommendations for a quad fin set in the futures? I m 77kilos and just got a new tomo evo in 5"10. I m a average surfer on a short board and I feel like I need more control in the bottom turn. Cheers

You like it better as a quad or a thruster? I’m in Oceanside, CA. and am a big guy who likes to throw turns

Slapturkey thanks man!

Thruster is the best go the board has so much speed anyway that quad isn't really necessary most of the time

Come on you can’t go surf rubbish waves like that for a review seriously go surf something decent and then you can tell us what the bored feels like

Just look up the volume for a pro that weighs the same as you, that's your minimum volume - then add as many L as you think you need to have a proper wave count per session. If you struggle to catch waves, add a lot of volume. If you're focusing on turns, add only a bit of volume.

Board looks fast, were you riding 3 or 4 fins?

thruster set up in this review. Board does ride amazing as a quad though

Great review and pretty much the same way I felt after riding the first time. Such a versatile and fun board to ride.

Hi Thank you for the awesome reviews. I had an evo FST 5'3 for 2 years
and loved it until it clean snapped under the lip of a Oaxaca barrell.
Living in Texas I travel to surf so I need a versatile board that works
in waves ranging from windswells in the Gulf Coast, to California and
perfect barrels back home in Mexico. Now I am shopping for a new board,
not sure whether to go for the SKX or another EVO.. I really like that
it's available in the Timbertek construction too. Thoughts on FST vs
Timbertek?
Sunrise Surf Shop
Sunrise Surf Shop - 7 years ago
so this is a tough one honestly because all surfers are different but personally i don't like the stiffness of the Timber Teks, that being said certain models ride great with this construction and its stiffness. Baked potatoes, Chum Lee's are good in TT and an Evo might be but i'm not sure? I wouldn't risk it if i was you because it might ride differently then the one you had. As far as the SKX, i love the feel of that board but i think it will need a good wave to work its best (not ideal for gulf coast windswell) That is the next board we plan to review on Test Drive once we get some decent waves. Hope that helps! thanks for watching

As soon as we get a solid swell over here! probably end of August or September realistically. Sorry not sooner, waves have been terrible around here this summer. Thanks for tuning in!

Hi, great review! Would you recommend Evo for a 1st shortboard or someone coming from a mid-length board? Who can surf it, a novice, a learner who wants to progress from a foamey or mini-mal? Thanks. Best of luck with your shop and your Youtube channel.

stick with the Baked Potato or EVO! The vadar and vanguards are great boards but meant for quality surf. We sell a lot of baked potatos to guys who have only longboarded and want to get on smaller boards, they work great for that purpose. The EVO is a great all arounder, will work in mushy stuff but hold a lot better then the baked potato if the surf gets good. Whichever you chose just get it bigger then what is recommended for your size, the extra float will help you with the situation you are in. Thanks for watching,l let me know if i can help in any other way!

@Sunrise Surf Shop hate asking this question as it's so common but my local surf shops will just give advice often influenced by what's on the rack. I'm an athletic guy a bit out of shape after a long illness and pretty inexperienced other than some longboarding which I picked up really fast but also tired of only surfing a LB. Had been looking at the FW Sweet and Baked Taters, have had a local shop trying to push a 5'10"+ Von Sol Shadow which seemed nice with lots of volume. Mentioned this to someone impartial and experienced who absolutely swore by the Evo. I'm very small, 5'2" and after illness weight dropped from 135 to 115 and not moving back up very fast so 120 would be my new normal. Mostly mush here in the summer though been great lately w/no let-up in sight. Southeast New England, mostly RI. Any advice would be very welcome. There's numerous used Vanguard's and Vader's for sale at good prices but no place to demo that I'm aware of. Also from the earlier mentioned Von Sol, I can pick up a 5'4" Manta at a great price but I've scored the wrong board at great price before and it obviously isn't a great price when the board is wrong for you. Much thx

Appreciate the help. Yes I am determined :) got into surfing pretty late. Got no delusions of joining the world tour or even competing :) but been doing surf & balance workout at home plus some surf training on a longboard skateboard on the streets. I'll take your advice and probably go right in the middle of 5'7" and 5'9" and get a 5'8" :) hope that translate to 70% fun and 30% challenge. Will hit you up on the email. Hoping the shipping cost isn't that steep to send an Evo to where I live. Thanks man!

Sunrise Surf Shop - 7 years ago
honestly at that weight i would think a 5'7 or 5'9 would be ok as far as float but still be challenging. look at it like the 5'7 would be a bit challenging but could pay off in the long run, the 5'9 would be a lot easier in the beginning but as you get better it will start to feel a little big. If i had to pick without knowing how determined you are i would probably say do 5'9 since it is your first smaller board. local ding guys can fix them for sure and if you have trouble finding one locally we can have it drop shipped directly to you and give you a discount off any accessories (traction pad, fins, leash, etc...) that you might need. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the help. Was lookin for a board that is symmetrical for stability and campact for maneuverability. Since it will be my 1st shortboard, I prefer something relatively easy to ride but still offer some challenge allowing me to progress. Thank you for test driving and reviewing this board. Your video helped a lot. I stand 5'8 & 1/2" tall and I weigh 136lbs/61,5K. Novice skill, how much can I over-size this board to have fun and a lil bit of challenge? I just hope local shapers here can repair this type of construction if ever I damage it. What other model is closest to this board's behavior and features on water?might have a hard time finding one, locally. Thanks and more reviews and test drives please. :)

The Evo could be a good transition board from someone coming down from a bigger board. I would recommend to go a little bigger then what an experienced person would ride though. It will be really stable and maneuverable which is a hard combo to find when you are learning. Say you are experienced and your weight would dictate you ride a 5'8, you would just go up to a 5'10 and it should work fine. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!

Hi, you have a great ability to tell the average surfer (most of us) how a board works and your video tells the story in average type waves. I am 165 lb and 5''10 tall and 52 yrs young. i'm of a little above average ability, could the Tomo EVO be a one board quiver, i live in Australia and surf cronulla, which is generally HB pier type quality and size on any average day. what size would you recommend?. i was deciding between EVO or Nano. or please pass on your thoughts. My understanding is the Vanguard is not a grovellor and meant for good waves. love the videos, keep them coming, Steve

Sunrise Surf Shop - 7 years ago
Don't know why i am missing some of these comments, i apologize for taking so long Steve!! you have been told well, the Vanguard needs a good wave and from my experience the Nano felt a little weird (we sold a couple and people liked them) but the EVO is the way to go! I would think a 5'5 EVO would be good but if that seems to small go to a 5'7 and play it safe! hope that helps, thanks for tuning in and the kind words

im a 85 kg kitesurfer and i want a surfboard for strapless kiting. what you suggest me ? evo or vader? or VG? and what size? thanks
Michael Brashier
Michael Brashier - 8 years ago
I'm thinking of picking on of these up for kitesurfing. I'm guessing I should go a size or two smaller. I currently ride a 5'8" Sweet Potato but its just too much volume for kiting. I'm 6ft, 185lb.
Michael Brashier

look up volume of a 5'5 or 5'6 Sweet Potato and line it up with similar volume in EVO model! that should work good for the kiting i would think? good luck'

Great review! I rented one yesterday in a rising swell, thigh at first, shoulder later. Completely agree with your review. The board just goes so fast and is super maneuverable. I rode a 5'5" at just over 30l, which is the same volume for my 6'2" hpsb. The evo was much faster and paddled about the same. Fun board!

Thanks for reviewing this board, I think this is what helps customer to look at different kind of sticks!
Do you think that EVO could be a go to board for anything from 1 to 5/6 ft?
Could work also on something faster and hollow like Indonesia/Maldives?

Sunrise Surf Shop where in the Philippines do you surf? I'm bookmarking spots for the next time I visit family there.
Sunrise Surf Shop
Sunrise Surf Shop - 8 years ago
yes it can for sure!! if its a board you are going to be using strictly for good waves like Indo though the Vader is the way to go. I have one stashed in the Phillipines for the point breaks and good surf over there. Sorry for late response, thanks for watching!!

Exellent review! What size would you recomend for a 175lbs 6.0 42 year old intermediate surfer.
Sunrise Surf Shop
Sunrise Surf Shop - 8 years ago
sorry for such a late response, i would think 5'10 would be good depending on what side of the intermediate scale you are on. 6'0 at the biggest! These boards are still fun if they are a tad big when you are at that intermediate level. Thanks for watching!!

+Dani Dani i use the large AM template on the majority of my boards, if nothing else because i know exactly how that fin reacts in all conditions, would highly recommend to try out the Medium Biolos template though, that is a very good all around fin. Also try it as quad, heard a lot of people liking that, even ones who dont usually ride quads
