If you decide to buy somewhere else or would like to support the show, please give at https://www.paypal.me/surfnshow In this episode Daniel Thomson and I talk casually about his new design the Hydroshort. The Hydroshort is a great Daily Driver for 3-6’ surf. I did catch a few 2’ waves on it and it went well but the 2’ surf had a bit of push to it. I don’t recommend the Hydroshort as a groveler in 1-2’ mushy surf. After putting the Hydroshort through the paces in multiple wave sizes and conditions I liked it best as a Thruster with Medium fins and I highly recommend this board for Intermediate to Advanced surfers. My Height: 5’9” Weight: 160 lb or 72.5 kg Hydroshort Board Size: 5’6” x 18 9/16 x 2 5/16 Liters 25.5 Favorite Fin Set Up: Thruster “Futures Beta 2.0 R6 Vapor Core” Tomo’s Height: 5’8” Weight: 158 lb or 71 kg Hydroshort Board Size: 5’6” x 18 9/16 x 2 5/16 Liters 25.5

Is the Hydroshort one of your favorites for 2019? Definitely looks loose underfoot
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Donald Calvo It did not make my favorite list for 2019. It was close and I had to think about it long and hard. The reason it didn’t make my favorites..., it took a little getting used too. Boards that make my favorites list I connect with them in the first session... most of the time on the first couple waves. After I got the Hydroshort dialed with fins it lit up and got spicy.

Face tension, yeah, great way to articulate that. Noel, also really enjoyed your input on the medium fins, epic stuff, thanks/

Hey Noel, so do we go for our favourite volume or do they need to be ridden shorter like Tomo’s other shapes? Thanks!

Spotty One Normal Volume.... 25.5 on the Stock 5’6” is my normal Volume. Think of the Hydroshort as your typical Daily Driver.

Noel, excellent review once again. Would you say too much overlap with the Cymatic to make it worth having both?
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Bronze Whaler Yes... same wave size for both boards. However they surf completely different. The Cymatic is sharp in the Pocket and epic for vertical surfing. The Hydroshort is more user friendly and surfs more like your typical Daily Driver/HPSB

That board's too short and too ball bearing-y. But, it's nice, but I'm happy-stoked with my White Noiz.

Great review! I have been riding mine for the last 3 days, and your review was spot on. For me, definitely a board for chest high and bigger. I struggled with it on a day with small (waist high) waves, but it still goes. I prefer it as a quad, but it's still very fast and snappy as a thruster. Also, it get's into waves easier than the Cymatic I had. Very happy with it so far! Killer board.

Hi Noel,

How can you compare it to the cymatic knowing that the two boards are daily driver?
But for sure one of the two will be my next board!
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Paul Louvion Cheers!! I would go 5’4” Cymatic
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Paul Louvion On the other hand... the Hydroshort is more user friendly... easier to surf.
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Paul Louvion Cymatic is better in the pocket and offers more sensitivity being shorter. Both boards a fast but the Cymatic is more responsive

Hey Noel, listening to this video with my headphones and I’m only getting audio in one ear? It starts when we look at waves together and goes back to normal at the music

Congratulations for the work! If you can help me with a question, thank you. I have a cymatic 5.8 and I am in doubt between Hydroshort 5.10 or 5.11. I am 42 years old 5.9 of some and 82kg. What do you suggest? thanks!

Surf n Show Reviews - 5 years ago
Pablo Stivaletti If you love your Cymatic and it floated you good then get roughly the same liters on the Hydroshort.

Yo was thinking, if you right click your audio bars on editing, you can fill left or right channel, so you get stereo on the talking thoughtout the video. Thanks for feeding the search for a perfect board!

I would love to hear Daniel commenting about certain behaviours at Lennox Head and around. I am of course talking about his father but also noticed some comments from Aussie guys there saying Daniel himself wasn’t exactly the nicest bloke in the water.
Would make s lot of sense to me. It’s one thing to make big smiles at the camera to promote boards and make money but I also like to know the real face of people.
There are many many talented shapers out there.

So many people look up to all these pros and personalities. They are just people good and bad like you and me. Be your best, smile heaps, be nice to people, enjoy the surf, share the waves. Aloha :)

Thanks for the awesome review. I'm stuck between a holy Grail, phantom, and a cymatic or hydroshort. I had a sci fi that I liked . Current quiver is a 5-8 hypto and 6-0 mini driver

Alright so I had the chance to try out the phantom and holy Grail in 3-5 foot surf. Used the same fin on both. Both were awesome but I liked the skate feel of the holy Grail. I also did a cut back on the hg and surprised the shit out of myself. Honestly both were awesome but ended up with the hg A deciding factor for me was that they didn't have the phantom in epoxy. Durability is big for me. Can't be buying a board every couple months.
