I also ask Tomo to explain the differences between the Hydroshort and his other models the Hydronaut, SKX and Cymatic. The Hydroshort is a great Daily Driver for 3-6’ surf. I did catch a few 2’ waves on it and it went well but the 2’ surf had a bit of push to it. I don’t recommend the Hydroshort as a groveler in 1-2’ mushy surf. After putting the Hydroshort through the paces in multiple wave sizes and conditions I liked it best as a Thruster with medium fins and I highly recommend this board for Intermediate to Advanced surfers. I’ve had my hydroshort in helium for 3 weeks now , I’m 100 kg and 184 cm 58 yo grommet. I went for the 6’4” and my first surf l was thinking I’d made a mistake but the waves were shit so kept plugging away in crap surf with glimpses of what this board could do . Today l had 3ft waves ( head high ) and some steep faces and this board took off , unbelievably fast and such a good paddling board to get the old bastard in early. I’ve got a skx which l love up to 5ft and can’t wait to get the hydroshort in some real quality 3-6ft barrels , I’ve got a hydronaut 6’8” which I’ve had in 4 - 6 hollow beachies and it goes insane can’t wait for some indo juice next year . The hydroshort is definitely not a grovler and the review was clear on this . So stoked with tomo shapes as it’s given me a new lease on surfing and hopefully l will be pulling in for the next 20 years.

Michael Giuffre Both are designed for similar wave size and type. HG is looser and maybe a tad faster rail to rail. I think the HG offers more progressive surfing too... airs etc. the Hydroshort is easier to surf and paddles better.

Another great review Noel:) I have been using my 5'9" firewire baked potato and I love it, I use it in a lot of smaller wave beachbreak. For that board I went over what most would say to get in terms of volume and have no regrets. However, when I went with a bigger Evo I absolutely did not like it....probably because I went too big. I'm looking for a board to go in a little bigger conditions for winter...nothing crazy just something that can handle a little more size than the BP and this hydoshort might fit the bill.

I am about the same height and weight as yourself and just broke 50 years young but surfing nowhere near the same performance so I am not looking for real HP just trying to keep the wave count high. What size would you recommend? For what its worth I would use it probably exclusively as a quad since I always seem to make those work better than thrusters. In terms of firewire I am looking at the Cymatic and SciFi.

surfcrs I like the Cymatic and Hydroshort for the wave size your looking for. I would keep the Liters close to your BP if it floats you good.

One of the best reviews yet, loved it!
One thing that might be highly subjective - I surfed an Evo before, which I overvolumed slightly (1l extra for groveling). It was a great board, but found it to not work great in choppy conditions. Afterwards I got to know that you should go low in volume on modern planing hull designs, as low as you dare. Tried an Evo one size smaller and it went great! My mistake. Still these seem to be quite sensitive to sizing. Didn't have that issue with some Machado models, Al Merricks or lost boards.
Any thoughts on sizing regarding the Hydroshort Noel? Go on the lower side of things for these as well?

my experience is these boards need to feel a little under volumed when u put them under your arm.. cause the boards that feel just right under your arm are usually over volumed when in the water..

@Surf n Show Reviews thanks man! I'm just on a much lower level, so kinda shy to go low. Especially here in Europe you often seem to get bad advice regarding board size (too big). Never regretted going lower, sometimes regretted going bigger thinking about it.

Felix Lux I try to keep everything consistent with my liter range 25-26.2 in EPS. PU my range is a little different 25-26.7ish.

If I am in between two sizes then I always size down and go for the lower liters. I would rather work a little harder paddling and get more performance out of a board... especially with EPS boards. They can be a bit corky and I want them to sink quickly.

Dan made a very good comparison with the SKX.
But I'd still like to learn better the differences between Hydroshort X Cymatic.

would love to hear your thoughts and how you - Noel - felt about the differences in riding them: Hydroshort X Cymatic: wave tipe/size and performance approach.

when would you chose a Hydroshot over the Cymatic and vice-versa?

I already love the Cymatic and find it a great option for a high performance approach in small-medium punchy waves, without carrying all the nose length of a traditional HPSB.

Rafael Mellin The Cymatic is completely different due to the parallel outline. Tomo mentioned that... the Cymatic has a long rail line with a blunt nose that offers a HPSB feel in a short package. The Cymatic is a HPSB that surfs vertical excellent in the pocket on 3-8’surf.

The Hydroshort is more of a conventional Shortboard shape with a torpedo nose to keep it a little shorter and still fit into a tight pocket.

Out of the Cymatic and Hydroshort I prefer the Cymatic for my style of surfing... it surfed more vertical in the pocket for my style.

Thanks Noel. As always two quality reviews. How would you compare this board to the Sciphi? I almost always ride that or my Seaside. I’m actually on my 3rd schiphi. ‘This board interest me just like that fish that’s sitting on the table. What’s the name of that one? Tomo mentioned you me he had a fish coming out in January or sometime shortly after. Is that the one?

Maurice Cureton I like this Hydroshort better compared to the SciFi.
That fish is called the El Tomo Fish... I think it’s coming out soon, not sure on the dates. Yes that’s the Fish Tomo was talking about. You can order one now on his website.

Bought a Cymatic based on the review (last video review), and within the first 3 waves (after getting used to the accelerated speed it generates) that cymatic board Lites Up as soon as you stand up it just goes!! And goes fast. I can’t wait to surf it in solid overhead surf. Here in Ventura .

I hope to see more Tomo interviews, his boards are crazy good. I have a 5’2” eco (quad set up- KS fins)
5’3 vanguard (clay Marzos thruster (
Two SKX’s (a custom thruster, and a fun fin stock board 5’8”.
Now a cymatic (5’3” / 25.4 Lts) with generic plastic fins (in fin testing phase) trying all kinds of constructions and shapes. Quad/tri etc. also twin for fun
CI /Ks12- Slater fcs fins
Also neck beard 5’8” (don’t ride it)
8’6” FCD designs/patagonia quad gun shape. (EA quad set)

Love the cymatic.. it’s one of the best boards I’ve ever been on. Exceptionally fast and responsive.
