Tracker Jon Boat Review

Bought a brand new 2013 1436 Tracker Jon Boat. My experience with this Company has been less than favorable. At this time this company has not stood behind their product. This may be helpful for considering this type of boat. The price may be attractive, but the features may fall short for any type of fishing or serious use.

Good review... I thought about ordering a boat a few times but after watching your video that thought now totally gone..
Cheap is what you paid for cheap is what you got. And many people say I am nuts because I HAVE NEVER AND WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING off the net that I can not see and touch first. AT least a exact Copy of what is being sold... I have been watching a lot of different reviews etc. as I am planning on getting a JB probably in Dec when I move from Ca. To Texas... To many even on Crags ist seem to think their boat is new as most are asking the same of almost the same price that can be spent on a new one... They think by adding a 800 dollar motor it makes it worth a extra 15,000 bucks... They are nuts... but I know... there are lot who will say its a match and they just rather buy a used, banged up 900 dollar boat with a used motor worth about 500 bucks for 2 grand because they are including a 200 dollar trailer... MOST arent smart enough to ask about title for boat and motor and trailer which is required at many places...

You did not do proper research. If you wanted a boat as you are describing you should have purchase a alumacraft 1436. Plus its a heaver boat that uses a slightly thicker aluminum. No floatation corners in rear so your tank and and battery will be out of the way so you can fly fish your heart out. Maybe you deciding factor was price the alumacraft is about on average 15% more at local stores.

Your probably right, if there was a alumacraft dealer and a boat within 500miles. This Tracker was an hour away. Lesson learned.

Did you not see it at your dealer before making the actual purchase? Sounds like you had the option to not get it and you went ahead and bought it anyway. I prefer the new model as It adds a place for maybe placing my tackle or lures wihout worrying about them falling over.

Gunlover1955, Since this posting of several years ago, it appears Tracker has made some slight improvements to their Jon Boats. Whether you pay $1000 for an inexpensive boat, pay $400 for a Stand UP paddleboard, or $50 or an air mattress you expect that the manufacture should get it right. Constructive feedback only helps the industry.

I have 4 buddies with that same exact boat. They run then on a weekly basis. All year round. No issues and they are all running 15hp Outboards. The one is running a 18hp mud motor. They use the boat for what it is. A JON BOAT. Hunting fishing adventure crusing. We beat them up and push them to there limits. They are solid boats.
MARSH MADNESS 49
MARSH MADNESS 49 - 6 years ago
This guy is being absolutely ridiculous. He's bitching about the most silly stuff ever. People like this should never make reviews. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this boat. I understand the issue with the fuel tank. Even though a 3 gallon fuel tank will fit but yes the 6 gallon will not.

Him saying that the transom is too thin is ridiculous. It has three different middle interior supports. Just because the motor dug into his plywood on the inside of the boat does not mean you have to replace the plywood. He clearly has no idea what he's talking about. And the fact he's complaining that some of the paint chipped off on the back part of the transom where the motor has been. OMG. Try tightening down the motor more so it will not slide around. This is ridiculous

Hey Marsh. The great part of living in this country is having the right for all of us to speak our opinion. Even if we were not part of the buying process. I was attracted to purchase because I found it locally, and it was cheap. And I got a cheap boat. Lesson learned. When the dealer backed my views, Tracker Boats was not very cooperative. The dealer ended up cutting me a deal and taking the boat back. In support of Tracker Boats, today they have completely rewritten the warranty policy. If that new policy had been in place in 2104, the issue would have been solved by the dealer quickly. Since that time, Tracker is now using a more durable paint and materials, and I am sure that customer feedback is helpful in an evolving market place.

Excellent review! Thank you for sharing your opinion. If Tracker is wise they will listen to your review and opinion. I also have a problem with the lack of space at the back of the boat. But at the same time there is flotation material within those areas. That can be a plus. If I get this model of boat, I will consider using one of the special gas tanks used to fit that tight area. Lowe also has the built up areas in the back of many of their jon boats.

It sucks that you weren't happy with the boat, but I mean really... who buys a boat based on what it "looked" like on the website. You went to the dealer. You didn't think to give it a good look over before you made the deal. Its your own fault you didn't get the boat you wanted. Im surprised tracker even answered your phone call. This was far from a warranty issue....

Yes, I could have been more careful the hour that I was at the dealer picking up the boat. Bottom line the manufacturer failed to follow thru immediately with myself and the dealer. This drugged out a couple years. The dealer and customer is not responsible for a poorly designed boat. The dealer is a multi million dollar annual customer of Tracker. You would think that may have some merit. The fact that 47,000 people have viewed a less than favorable review should have at least deserved a phone call.

I went to Tracker's website, and at the time and the configuration was open in the back of the boat (according to the photos shown). I drove to a dealer in another town to pick it up. While I was filling out the paperwork at the dealer, the guys on the lot loaded the boat in my stock trailer. It was not until I drove to the lake to launch did I realize my gas tank did not fit. It took some head scratching at first, but then I realized that Tracker changed the configuration of the back bay mid model year, but did not change the photos on the website. I tried to make a bad situation work, but after a few days on the water, everything else inferior came to my attention. Tracker DID NOT stand behind the product, and it took close to 2 years to work it out with dealer, but the best part is... I am in a much better boat today. My experience today is... if your motoring over open water, it is best to stay away from cheap. Period.
A boat is much different from buying a bicycle and going for a ride in the park.

I've owned the Tracker 1436 and the Alumacraft 1436lt. To me the Tracker is more stable. A 3.5 gallon tank fits nicely behind the seat. With these new four strokes a 6 gallon tank is overkill. For the price you just can't beat this boat. I got good comments on it every time I took it out. Just wish they would put the live well back in. The boxes on the back are full of foam for extra flotation in case you turn over.

he has a point about the back of the boat with the addition of the corner flotations. This does not leave room for an external gas tank. I just bought a 2016 1436 and am having trouble finding a small enough gas tank to fit into such a small area.

Hello.  I was literally hours away from purchasing a 2016 Topper 1436 until i read this.  This will be my first boat.  I only plan on using it on a fairly large (540acre) lake which is normally pretty calm.  Local laws do not allow gas motors so I am planning on a 55 lb Minn Kota.Do you pros think that there will be an issue with the Tracker for me being that I am not using a gas motor?  Its $709 at Bass Pro Shops here.  The only other option is a Alumicraft 1436 for $779 and its a farther drive to get it.  Is the $70 and additional hour drive worth it?Also can I strap one of these in the bed of an F150 to get it home? Thanks pros

Since the Alumacraft is only $70 more, I would highly steer you that direction. Tracker is owned by Bass Pro, and my drawn out experience with customer service was horrible. When you do get thru to the phone jockeys, it is pretty clear they do not know their product. It feels very corporate and not personal. We are not talking Apple here. I am only expressing here my experience. I am sure the paint job alone would be worth it. Good luck!

It has been 2.5 years since I purchased this boat. The day I sold it I was much happier than the day I bought it. I did learn alot about operating a small boat in rivers and lakes.
My next boat will not be from a large company with litterally no CS experience behind the phones. I am buying locally from a boat manufacture with a owner that has decades of experience in the water fishing. The owner even offerred to drive a demo boat hours to my home river prior to buying and is truely interested in our needs and conditions.

I own a 2012. Tracker topper 10 (bought it new ) I purchased my boat based on the tracker reputation I must say I'm not entirely happy with it ...first off the paint started to peel 2 months after purchase while the paper work says the paint color is forest green its not actually forest green its close to olive drab but not quite olive drab .......so I called tracker customer service to attempt to purchase touch up paint after a half hour of being placed on hold and giving my serial number and other questions unrelated to my particular situation I finally gave up the tracker customer service reps. Couldn't answer a simple question like would it be possible to purchase TouchUp paint ....then I asked if they knew who manufactured the paint for tracker.....you guessed it tracker customer service reps. Couldn't answer......after a month or so of using the boat I noticed the piece of plywood that is on the transom of the boat on the outside...had become discolored a closer look revealed that the discoloration was the actual paint washing off said plywood...so i removed said wood dried it out for a week then applied two thick coats of oil based paint (rustoleum brand because its non toxic when dry) then a good coat of cheap olive drab spray paint when reinstalling plywood I noticed that tracker hadn't painted under the wood it was bare aluminum ant there was some slight white rust ( oxidization for you grammar lawyers ... L.o.l) so taped sanded and primed (duplicolor gray primer) and two coats of cheap olive drab spray paint ( sorry have forgotten name brand of spray paint assure you it was very cheap ) but after words I got curious so removed inner transom wood same thing then on a hunch I decided to remove handles again same thing ........ Now here's the kicker to all this I could've went to my local academy sports and purchased a wider better built alumacraft boat for exactly the same money .....point to all this is reputation shouldn't be the only thing considered when making a boat purchase ....now I must admit the boat is usable and I have no complaints about the usability of a tracker boat but I am concerned about trackers apparent lack of attention to the small details and the customer reps. Lack of knowledge of their company's products as for purchasing another tracker... Well I'm not sure that I'll ever have a need to purchase another fishing boat because this one does what its intended to. Do (get me out on the water and on bigger fish) hope this helps whoever reads this to make an informed decision

I may have a solution to your space issue if you have not yet settled them. I don't know if it will work but its worth a shot. Instead of putting your fuel tank in front of your seat you should just take some Velcro make a square the size of the tank and Velcro it down that way it won't bounce around or move. And you could do this on top of the support blocks if they are big enough. But like I said I don't know if it will work, the velcor may not be strong enough. Just a tip

The 2015 model is advertised as well for a 15 HP outboard but bare this in mind comeing from a welder this is just a aluminum boat witch is a vary soft metal to start with I think the support was a great idea but it shouldn't be rated for a 15 HP moter due to the problem u have had and weld's do leak if not done correctly witch I think is were your water problem is coming from if u wanted a fly fishing boat u should have bought a flats boat

Thank you for the comments. Tracker could make some slight adjustments to transom, oar locks, paint and fuel tank area and it would not really change the overall price. In fact they have lowered the price of this boat since the year I purchased it. I belive they have already upgraded the paint on the newer jons. I needed a boat that could fit a 6 gal tank in the back (not a 3 gal). Their website depicted that and I took the hook. No hard feelings, but accurate reviews only helps the industry produce better products and marketing.

The Columbia River is big place and the conditions vary greatly. I have seen it perfectly calm and I have windsurfed it in 50 knot winds with an overhead height swell. The river is potentially dangerous in any pleasure boat. If you live there, you know what I am saying.

i have one and love it.. Jon boats are not meant to be pretty, i have a 2013 as well, and it looks 10 years old, but thats because i beat the crap out of it, but do any rivets leak? no. does it still work great? yes. i understand the fuel tank is an issue, but i switched to a tall 3 gallon and it fits fine. for the price i don't think it gets much better, the oar lock is just lame on the dealer end, but they usually just touch up the paint with a rattle can anyways, which you can easily buy the tracker green paint (i use this boat with a 16hp longtail mud motor or a 15hp mercury)

Got some major issues with your claims. To start with you are mad that a boat doesn't fit your tank. Do you buy a car to fit some old wheels laying around also? There are plenty of tanks that will fit in that area. Do you really think a boat manufacturer didn't think that fuel was needed? Also the G3($1160) you speak of have the EXACT same braced transom design. Check their website you can see the tanks also. Then your false claim that water is coming in under the MISSING welds at the very top of the transom. This is pure stupidity. If water is coming in there your entire boat would flood. Because your transom would be underwater. Check your drain plug. The paint is actually powder coating. And no its not bullet proof or grind proof. Dry docking on rocks, sand and concrete ramps will damage any paint or powder coating. The NORMAL size transom is wood not steel. Very common and used for decades on light jons. It looks like you need to tighten it up better. Or add a small piece of aluminium where the contact points are. Then you act like a company that only sells in person thru dealers. Somehow mislead you with a single website photo not being updated. with new improved design change. You claim this is photo shopped! LOL Despite the fact that you purchased the boat in person. This a car TOPPER!!! That is very lightweight and portable jon boat that weighs 162 pounds and cost $600. What in the hell are you expecting? You are trashing a company for your own ignorance. People please have some sense about these claims of his.

Your right in your thought process. My research came from Tracker's website. What actually happened, I drove into the dealer and they loaded it in my enclosed stock trailer, which took a minute. The dealer stores their boats upside down on a rack. The boat said Tracker 14 on the side. I went inside the shop and filled out the paperwork and left. When I pulled the boat out of trailer at the lake (after the state registration was paid) and started to load my gear and gas, I noticed it was not the same boat. Lesson learned. Never assume a manufacture will sell the new boat as advertised on their website.

I "had" the same boat made in 2008 and my "5" hp 4 stroke ( forget 15) would make the transom flex at full throttle!  Forget the factory paint and the .05 thick hull sells a lot of JB weld!  Toppers are trolling motor pond boats!

I spoke with the Engineering Department today where the boat was manufactured.  There are two gas tanks that will work.  1 is a Scepter p/n# 05876 the handle is on the top its a 3 gallon (14.25" L X 10.5" W X 9" H).  Also Mercury has a Quicksilver model # 8m0044976 which is a 3.2 gallon also with the handle on the top of the gas tank.  He was not aware of the disconnect between retail sales and the plant.  It will fit in the back.  Take care,

G3 makes a nice sturdy boat. Well worth a few extra hundred dollars. If Tracker is the only choice I would go with at least the 1542LW. It is better for outboards, but the height on gunnels is still shorter from what I can tell.

The photo which was changed to depict the added back or floation panels weeks ago, now the photo has changed again and they have added the angle brace supporting the transom. Thank you for correctly updating the 2014 photo to reflect the 2013 model that was purchased this year and shown in this review.

Your exactly right. Tripping over the gas tank in the center of this small boat on this model should be obvious to anyone in the business. Building the transom stronger and thicker to accomadate outboard motors is a small price to pay than the potential liability of having a motor slip on a thin piece of plywood (like I have experienced). I feel this boat is better suited for battery-operated trolling motors without the outboard. My hope is that they would listen and build a better product.

What they've done to the transom makes no sense, That space is where the battery and/or gas tank should go; if they needed to re-enforce the back panel they should have done it right.

Thank you for the comment. The last time I looked at the website, Tracker took the old pre 2013 1436 photo and it appears they tried to photoshop the back panels into the new 2014 model photo. This was within a week or so after this video was posted. In an attempt to correct their mistake they forgot to add the angle brace. How hard would it be to take a correct photo of a 2014 boat and add it to the website?

Thanks for the video / review. Your point about the web advertising is completely valid.

The Tracker 14 is plenty stable in flat water for fly casting. It is not the type of boat that you would want to stand on the edge and move around. Tracker makes much wider and more stable models if that is a concern.

I saw a G3 Jon boat last month in my travels. It took care of all the questions I experienced with the tracker topper 14, with the gas tank placement, transom thickness, oar locks, and paint durability. The one big difference was that the height of the gunnel on the boat was about 6 inches higher. This would make the boat feel much safer in rougher water conditions. Your right, this is a much nicer, more expensive boat. The price was $1550.

What about the stability of the boat? Is it stable standing up in.? I do fly fishing and frog gigging so I need stability.

Jon, Your right with your comments. This is a Jon Boat and it is meant to be used. It is not a problem that the paint is coming off after 5 days, the problem is the advertising on the website claims the paint will protect the boat for years of use. Building a transom with more support is good, but my outboard does slip out of position on such a thin plywood/metal transom mount (not good). Since this experience I have seen one excellent option out there. Check out G3 Jon Boats. A+ in design.

I very much appreciate the review due to the fact I will be buying one here soon. Although there is some flaws, I think, with all respect, that you are overlooking this to be a big nice fiberglass boat. It's a Jon boat. There meant to be run up on shores, and thrown in the back of the pickup truck. There not meant to be pretty boat unless you spend all of your time in the open water. The gasank is the only problem I see, BUT this resolves the transom problem and supports the 15hp much more.
