Many of our viewers don't know about our life transformation - from contractor/restaurateurs to a more simple way of life, how we built our own sailboat and embarked on a life of cruising. In this video Pt. 1-7 we've made a compilation of several videos, our backstory up to the launching of Emerald Steel. Great stuff! It's always good to know when to walk away and damn the cost. It comes down to having principles; as a grumpy old man I could say how different young people are now, but no, there will always be those that stand by their principles and those that don't. As my gran used to say, "There's nowt so queer as folks." I've been watching since the beginning and can't wait to see the follow-up - that's quite an achievement for YouTube.

I just love this episode. What a story! Jules with his dry laconic humour, and Suzie bright and chirpy. Both immensely talented, determined and obviously devoted to each other. Most lesser mortals would have thrown in the towel and got a job in MacDonald's, but not you two. You are an inspiration to all, and now that I have subbed I can't wait to hear about your continuing tale. Soon please xx

Jules and Susan, Thanks for filling in some of the gaps! I've followed your story from almost the beginning of your posting. Jules and Susan, amazing! What a wonderful story of life. You have a right to be proud of your accomplishments especially finding the path to happiness. I believe there is one God and He is watching over us; giving us every chance to find Him. Jules, you said some time ago that your channel was not based on click-bait. Well, I beg to differ; your click-bait is a more honest and purer way of life. Stick with it and continue to be happy.

Wow, what a great story. Well we did have some of the story from the earlier series but this really filled in the details with great humor. We were sitting on the edge of our seats from beginning to end. We knew it must have turned out well since you are still living on the boat and have made many exciting trips and still coming back to SD.

I hope we have the chance to get together. I am exactly the same sage as Jules and my grandfather was from Czechoslovakia too. Of course that does not make me an honorary member but I remember the stories he told of arriving in New York penniless but willing to work.

Anyhow hope you had a good time back in the Mother country and we can connect soon. V&J

Your recent videos seem to be timed to shake and confirm my thoughts. I can truly relate to losing it all in real estate (3 houses 2 on the water, 1 direct beachfront) and I retired in 2007 just in time for the cash... I too survived and while I sold 2 properties at a huge loss, I finally waited out the market on my San Diego house which I sold last April. Now, I am looking for a 30' - 40' sloop or cutter and may see you on the water. With Kind Regards and gratitude, thanks Peter.

I'm also trying to be free of slavery from the fancy cars, big houses, and corporate jobs. Sold it all and now and on a 43 foot sailboat. Only problem is my better half likes land better. Nothing is perfect. Life is hard on a boat. Too many things to mention in a post even after only 1 year aboard. I suppose you get used to many of the discomforts. I'm now in the Bahamas after leaving Canada. I truly admire you two for sticking with it for so many years. Todd.

Great video, but the repeated reference to "floor" drives me wild. I used to build wooden boats. A floor is a lateral structural member that ties ribs or frames together, and helps secure the ribs to the keel. I assume the same terminology would be used in steel construction. As I'm sure you know, what you are referring to as a "floor" is actually the "sole." Sorry. I just had to say it....
joe jitsu
joe jitsu - 5 years ago
Sailing Emerald Steel I figured as much. After spending much of my life messing with boats, building boats, and fixing boats, I'm accustomed to the technical terms, and struggle to remember to use non-technical terms with people who don't know boats. You do a much better job than I ever would.

One thing I figured out, at least for Americans, is to tell them "The steering wheel in your car is on the port side." People usually get that. Of course, if they mess with power boats, all bets are off.

Your video brought back many memories. I built the exact same boat about forty years ago. I remember receiving the booklet from Roberts, selecting the Spray, receiving the full size plans, and so many other aspects of your story. Call it what you like God, the universe, or a higher power. I call it God. I've realized over the years that there is no such thing as luck and that the God I pray to has never given me what I want but has always provided more than what I need. +Sailing Emerald Steel What a coincidence! My mother brought my sister and me in Italy in september 1951 and we were sent to the refugee camp in Opicina (Opcina in slovenian, wich means comune, in italian, the community with a mayor), then she went to her husband's family (which she did not know, as my father, after the war, went to work in Jugoslavija and then died in a train accident in 1950, so she decided to seek a new life in Italy), near Gorizia, Gradisca d'Isonzo and our adventure begun. Your achievement is spectacular, your Emerald Steel a work of art. Spartaco Giacometti, Monfalcone, Gorizia. Italia.

Great story. Would love to hear the rest of it with pics. Old FRED sounds cheap, like Fred Mertz on the Lucy show, just a bastard though. Did you consider paying the extra rent and just working faster in the yard? . Also you could have turned in FRED for not having a permit on his deck.. I understand why you didn’t

Without YouTube the rest of the world may have never known about this incredible lifetime adventure. What sets Emerald Steel apart from the other YouTube sailing stories is the thought and planing that went into this from the beginning. The boat is a reasonable size to provide a comfortable home for two people. Issues like cooking, eating, bathing, laundry, food storage, water production etc. are more solvable with a larger boat. This was well thought out.

Your story is inspirational. So much wisdom and courage. You two deserve your happiness. I am reminded of Scotty Kilmer's channel on cars. He is an ex paratrooper and over his garage are four words which I think is the motto of the paratroopers. These words are "Live Free Or Die". I think you are familiar with the idea. Thank you for your inspiration.

You inspired me... you make a believer out of me... I just follow another path, from computer programming to now intend to buy a full feature jeanneau64, it has been 12 years now... sitting on a chair infront a computer 10 hours a day, every single day... Now finally at age 67, I am ready... I do not know what will happen.. or what the future holds... but it is a thing I must do... and that dream kept me alive for all these years... I am the last of my generation. they call me crazy, no one wants to come with me... I do not have any clue what is like sailing... nor where I go, I just know that is a thing I must do... me and my computer... Thank both of you to give a meaning for my life... hope some day we can met... my email: nervoso@k1.com.br

Great story that turned out wonderfully....The challenges involved up to launch, contributed to your confidence and determination as the character to excell as cruising sailors developed and your momentum was set in motion and continues to the present. You have a wonderful relationship and were blessed with capabilities that were developed beyond what most couples attain. 'truly a great destiny.

People might watch one of your newer videos and think yall are another trust fund crew, but yall have really embodied what i consider the true American Dream. ..The true American Dream is the pursuit of happines, not the pursuit of wealth...I am new to sailing, and bought a 1966 gladiator 24", nearly a sister ship to the lapworth 24 " Dove'" and am learning just how much dedication one must have to keep up any sailboat, let alone make one from scratch or refurbish an old one in any disrepair. Im in Everett WA still at the previous owners old slip I took over at purchase and have been waiting 12 months for live aboard moorage so far (what they said I would wait when I paid the 100$fee to be on the waiting list...now they are saying 18 months if I am lucky as I am sleeping in my subaru M-F in Seattle at my job that barely pays seattle min wage...been doing this since Nov 2017, and I hope I can keep it up and get to living on my boat and start the long list of repairs and replacement of old outdated or worn out gear...and am still super excited about the day I can sail to the horizon.. Each and every day
