Have a look at www.jefa.dk. Lots of good stuff on rudder, stocks, bearings and maintenance. Best solution is to drop the rudder and replace the lower bearing. Its a DIY project to glass in a new bearing

Chris, you have an email account. I can send you photos from my removal of old - surprises regarding the rudder stock - its tapered and not a tube in a tube, and the bearings...

Hi. I wonder if you have all the parts correctly in your drawing. Because in the rudder system like your’s and mine (Bavaria 44 at least) you have the actual bearing still sitting inside the casing what you call bushing. There is an upper and lower bearing and they are needed to also get the angle straight of the rudder pole. Here the drawing from the Jefa people. Contact them. They are very helpful. Have your Bavaria Hull Number handy. http://www.jefa.com/rudder.htm On their web site on the left side is a navigation pane. Select Installations. Then Grp wood from the center. Also go to last item of the pane then in the middle scroll to the bearings and select the link bearing site... I think you are on the wrong trail injecting epoxy into the mechanism.

Please...drop the shaft out, check it for trueness and wear, measure it and replace the worn bush with one at the correct size. Epoxy is not the right thing to sleeve a worn bush. Get some sleep..do the job properly..you’re making us nervous! All the best..Andy and Jenni.

IF you don't fix that rudder properly you live to regret it . I would never take my wife and baby to sea with a bodged up fix on something so important as a the steering system. "Sods" law being "sods law" it will; fail during a critical time. Cancel sailing and do it properly.

Norman Boyes has it correct. Your wife and daughter are precious. Slow down and pamper them (and yourself) so you can get it right. If you lose steerage or develop a massive hole at the waterline it will cost you much more than the delay will. Even if you have to pick up an odd job to fund it, do it right!

Take a step back, ask how much it would cost you to be rescued and risk your family for the sake of a few more days in the yard to fix a potentially dangerous situation?
Drop the rudder and make a safe permanent repair!!

My two pennies worth: As David Brown (and other's) have advised, get some rest and perhaps look to a more permanent repair. And let that deadline slip a little. There's no doubt on my part that you will find a good solution to the problem.
evanofelipe
evanofelipe - 6 years ago
Chris, I share your grief, but this has got to be fixed permanently, without resort to alchemy. There’s clearly a ‘physical’ cause of the stiffness. I totally endorse the message of many of the comments expressed below. It makes no sense that the shaft can feel free one moment and tight the next, if the entire structure has got to be stripped out, so be it. Do it. Just pouring solutions down the gap is not going to give you any confidence it’ll last. Best of luck.

Keelbolts every metal part needs bonding to the negative side of the engine. Big anode needs bolting to the hull

Not sure about the epoxy you are using but most of the ones I have used need to be applied at least 3mm thick so it can generate enough heat to cure properly.
Stop, breathe, sleep and do the real repair. Stuff the deadline.
David Brown
David Brown - 6 years ago
Forget about your deadline. Drop the rudder out. Knock out the old bush. Get the ss tube properly fixed to the hull (I would rebuild the entire support structure to ensure proper bonding). Get a new bush made by a machine shop. Fit it. Breath. Sleep. Decompress. Don't rush. Take a few days off. Do the solution that a boat builder would do.

What about brake fluid to clean the gunk to start? Then maybe medium gelcoat polisher? And why set yourself a deadline which means you will be fed up and exhausted when you launch? Give yourself some more time! It’s supposed to be s relaxed more enjoyable life!
Craig Overend

Good luck! I wasn't sure if you mentioned in the last video that you also followed the baking soda with vinegar to neutralise it? If so it likely softened the epoxy. I'd add oil, failing that, acetone to remove any uncured resin.
Don Alexander
Don Alexander - 6 years ago
I agree with Brad Larden. Holes in the boat, keel, rudder and rigging cannot be "Jury rigged". Not when you may possibly be out with your family in Blue Water. If your a small lake sailor not such a biggee. Also, why stress out yourself and your family with a timetable that is not absolutely necessary? You don't want to make decisions of importance ( like Keel connections and rudders ) based on the clock or calendar. Take the time and do it right. If you don't have the time or finances to do it right then wait. The biggest mistake sailors make is setting sail into deteriorating conditions because they " have to pick up Uncle Sal" in St. Croix in 2 days. When your young you can be in too big of a hurry, it's just not that important to hit the timetable. Tranquillo and enjoy the journey. Don't perform for your Youtube audience! Best of luck with whatever you decide.

You know better. Take a deep breathe, slow down and fix that whole assembly properly. Don’t let your rush to hit the water compromise the basic integrity of your boat and family home.
joel1239871
joel1239871 - 6 years ago
Chris, I know that you have looked into it a bit, but what is the chemistry after you put the baking soda into the shaft? Is there some residual that is causing the problem? Water shouldn't break the binding of the epoxy by itself, so something else is going on. What about putting hardner down the shaft to react with any uncured epoxy? I don't know, but this is weird. I don't think petroleum products are the answer for stiffness. Maybe lithium grease, but that's not the problem, is it?
Ed Russell
Ed Russell - 6 years ago
I'm not sure if it would work, could you try liquid soap in there to lubricate and also spray water in to use the soap to lift the " gunk" out . I have no idea if this is a viable option bit it's an idea. Best of luck

Direct to the matter. A structural part of your rudder system has been compromised unfortunately. The pipe system is a safety structural part and you can not just solve that with to say "a bit of glue". You will have to take the rudder out and rebuild the pipe, and subsequent solve the buss issue properly. This solution is not seaworthy and will come back to bite you, hopefully not on the high sea's with wife and kid.
Brad Larden
Brad Larden - 6 years ago
I know it's easy for me to say but I think you might be better off repairing that whole sleeve fixture fully. It's probably the most important part of your boat and with your lovely wife and daughter aboard, I would think it's not worth the risk of hoping for the best. That's just my 2 cents worth mate. Good luck with it whatever you choose to do.

Could it be that the stainless steel tube is not perfectly circular, and the epoxy has dried in this non-circular form thus when its rotated it interferes?

Best of luck. And more sleep! I feel great about your shims fix. I'm somewhat familiar with the material. Based on your experience - slick as the material is - do you expect the shims to shift or remain inert absorbing the force? If not, hopefully they'll spin around the bushing as opposed to spitting out! Love your problem solving.

Would adding a good penetrating oil help remove the junk and ease the pressure when you try to break the shaft free?
Hope you get something to work without breaking the bond to the rudder tube in the boat. Regards
