‘Dream Job’ Reality Check

Dear ladies and gentlemen thank you for entering the description section of dream job reality check. It is here that you will learn a little bit more about the video that is probably playing above. Some things that I would like to highlight is that if you love what you are doing that nothing is ever really like being at work. This doesn’t mean that life isn’t difficult maintaining a weekly upload schedule and sailing around the world. There have been arguments, squalls, pirate attacks, shark encounters, coconut attacks, post argument make up bliss and hours of sleeplessness. This is sometimes before breakfast. I guess for me there were a few things that stick in my mind that might be the catalysts for this video. Early on when we had come across people in the Pacific, specifically Travis and Mark and Jose and Gina and they had mentioned getting into sailing because of some of our videos and how they maybe made it seem easier than it actually was. Also listening to my friends and family back home who were under the impression that we were just sailing around on holiday which just is not the case at all. Sailing from A to B in your home in a foreign country with your “car” (tender) surrounded by salt water of varying levels of violence needs a certain level of attention most boats have a Captain and several crew. Filming this and making videos is another thing entirely and usually people on land have reliable internet and can order broken microphones online. We work crazy, ridiculous hours, there are only two of us but we love it. We hope you love the content we make. Thank you so much for following. I know you guys don't do a lot of gear reviews, however, any chance you could sneak a few thoughts in on the hydro-generator? I saw Riley pulling it off the port hull, I think? Does it work?
Cheers and stay safe
Nice (new) haircut too!

"Gee, Riley sounds like he's working hard. Maybe we should have a break and go on the PKA Podcast" - Elayna, 2018.
Hit up DrChiz and go on PKA, my aussie comrades!
Lucky to be living the dream. And sailing too ;)
personally your friend almost seems like a muse*( spelling?) not a gypsy.
Just googled it! guess the open water is her muse

So people if you are not well and not getting better don't take just one or two doctors word on what the cause is, we went to about 10 doctors and where treated like my wife was a hypochondriac. Even asked them to test for cancers and got mocked / ridiculed, be insistent and keep going to a new doctor until you get answers.
And the moral to this story..... chase your dreams when young like Riley and Elay have as once you have additional commitments you may never get the chance later in life to share that dream. It does not need to be on a million dollar yacht, get a Wharram or something like Lucky fish have which is a bit more work to maintain but a heck of a lot cheaper, very safe and can be kitted out to be very comfortable.
Would we change the decisions we made? Probably not as we have 4 amazing kids as an outcome, kids that we have taught to embrace life and also maintain responsibility for decisions they make. We have put off our dreams due to the decision to raise good and decent people, no regrets with doing that but can not help but feel robbed just as we can see getting some time back for us being pulled out from under us.
So chase your dreams everyone but not at the expense of the lives around you.

What happened to your video guy? Clearly gone?
I really like the room, comfort and speed of the cat. Makes me think about an upgrade but my budget may not like the idea.
It is very difficult for most people to fill their days with memorable events. The closest they can get is; second-hand experience.
Though, I will tell you that living a life like yours is addictive. Just imagine going back to a 9--5 job in a cubicle. The next great adventure that you can embark on is ; raising a family. That undertaking has rewards like no other.
All in good time.
Dan
Happy travels folks
Very genuine and honest
Thanks for keeping it real, fun and interesting...you truly are special.

Love the short hair too Elayna.
Along the way, you've created a good channel with great content. I swear, I watch your videos and almost feel like you two are real, active characters in my own life. I feel like I know the both of you very well, and as you mentioned "being honest" with the camera and "showing the good along with the bad" is a big part of the reason why. You both do a great job. As a weekend boater, I envy what you're doing but understand the huge undertaking it is to accomplish everything. Just keeping a boat operational can itself be a maddening experience. I couldn't imagine living on one with no home base to return to at the end of a long week on the water. I don't know how you two live on a small boat (in this context, even a huge boat is small) without killing each other. It's tough living in those small, confined spaces with someone and having no where to go, literally being isolated on a boat together. Or maybe that's just the one element you don't show for the cameras. If so, it's understandable but it would be interesting to watch.
Good luck with everything and thank yoy for posting another great video.
Wonderful video topic.
Thanks for all you do guys!

Elyna, the shorter hair really suits you.
I'm out.
I have realized just how much I take for granted day to day. Wow, I don't know where to begin.....most people whom have no sailing or cruising experience couldn't begin to understand what you do day to day. After this video they have a small glimpse of the reality to sailing around the world. Thank you so much for letting the rest of us share in your amazing journey, unfortunately I'll never have an opportunity to sail the world, but I have a small boat that I and my wife fish from on vacation. I live near Niagara Falls New York, and have fun showing people the sights from the water, it's a great change of perspective. I also have a little of Riley's sense of humor, I bring them out for a ride and take them 1/8 th of a mile above the actual falls! People freak out, but they settle down when I tell and show them they are perfectly safe. I don't go near the falls as close as I've seen others go, they do have a line of markers that show the point of no return, I stay very far away form those...u need binoculars to see them from my boat. Ok, too much blabbering....what I mean to say is...just the preparation time for those inshore trips take hours, going through the check list for safety, to checking the engine..I really appreciate what you both do so I can dream for an hour or two every week! Thank You so much for that privilege......love you guys, calm seas and safe travels.....
Keep it up we love the videos!
It’s quite clear y’all are a great fit. Your style of fit is why y’all have made your adventures so interesting to so many. You’re a great example to all of mature diligence, living your dream. Please don’t change your approach. You’re a big hit just the way you’re doing it. Most of us are very envious!
I fly drones and do my own post production and not a easy
Job to do.
Your haircut looks great.
God bless and be safe.
Can I ask - What was that program you used for potential route tracking?
Kevin
I learned to sail at 15 on a Styrofoam snark that I bought. I am now a 55 year old who has continuously owned sailboats for 40 years, and has never skippered a vessel out of sight from land. I have not walked in your shoes...it is a courageous endeavor for sure. But please consider my story when you get such comments in the future.
One of the things to realize is how lucky you and Elayna are to not have kids yet. Life really does change quickly once that happens. Good and bad.
Mostly good... :)
sincerely, i appreciate it.
i cant even manage to keep at sharing on social media, can't imagine how emotionally and mentally taxing constant filming is.
I generally like long hair, so im sad you had cut it, but then your new haircut remindsm me of Nausicaa (of the valley of the wind), which is awesome, and an awesome movie, if you have not watched it yet - do it :)
As for comparing looking after a boat against a small child....umm not sure about that, one thing I do know it would be impossible to do both....toddlers get into everything when your not looking and it just wouldn't work on a boat .......be warned, ha ha.
p.s. I am a patron under another name and really enjoy your vids, thanks.
(and filming too, of course)
The flow of your videos is so great
How many times do you watch it through?
What editing program do you use?
Haha I can imagine all the maintenance work that needs to be done and that it actually is a 24hour job to be sailing :D But that's a big part of the thrill of sailing, isn't it?
As a guy doing a lot of roadtrips in old.. very old cars i can sort of relate to things breaking down all the time ^^
All of that said let’s call a spade a spade. Like millions of others you are operating a business, a business you love, and one that is unique, but still a business. Your office is amazing and product production is very exciting, but it is still a business. Like others you have capital investment, debt reduction (I assume you are still paying for your beautiful boat), operating expenses, taxes and overhead along with all of the other financial concerns that are common with any business. You also live with weekly deadlines. All indications are you have managed these commitments extremely well. To balance all of that, currently the revenues you are generating are the envy of almost every other sailing channel on YouTube. Factor in the potential for growth and you should be very proud of what you have accomplished.
Can anyone do what you have done? Absolutely not! It takes more than a camera, a boat and hard work to achieve the personal and financial success you have. Like entrepreneurs in any business you need to be able to make the right critical decisions on a regular basis. You need to have the right chemistry among the team and the product created must be one the public wants. Having a couple, as the face of the business as easy on the eyes as you two are certainly helps. I agree, with some careful planning, anyone can go sailing and produce YouTube videos, but to realize the financial success you have takes something special. This gig will provide you with financial security for the rest of your lives. Few can achieve that doing something as exhilarating and exciting as you two do. Well done La Vaga!

These two kinda feel to me like the two of you, just 20 years down the line... (I really hope this is not considered spam, if it is, feel free to send, flames, delete, ...)
Elayna did you cut your hair?
Safe travels to you
.
As always! Thanks for the heads-up, guys.
Random Q: Would anyone you know even concider doing this solo? :)
PS: I like Elayna's semi-bob hair cut. I bet that cut out a lot of work.
Cheers to you two and all the brave people who are living life Differently with enthusiasm!
Thank you so much for making this video, I’ve been following you guys pretty much from the start and you inspired me to start my own channel although it is slightly different, as I’m restoring a wooden gaff rigged sailing yacht. I’m based in the UK so if you’re ever in the North Sea and need a pilot for the UK East Coast or Netherlands, give me a shout, I’ll show you some lush hidden creeks and sheltered Anchorage’s. Link to my channel is above ✌️✌️✌️⛵️⛵️⛵️
And, your new hair cut looks pretty great!
