06: The STRESS of Selling up to Sail away and Live the Dream - Yacht Survey and Sea Trial

We've had a survey done on a great boat - an Amel Super Maramu - but it's far from perfect and there's a lot of work to do on it. Nevertheless, we've put a deposit down and are steaming ahead! Even so, preparing to live the dream is stressful - we have to sell the car, pack up a house and rent it out.. all during the kids summer holidays! Transcript Woody went to Greece for a sea trial and survey of the boat that we're really interested in and the guy that was with him - who’s a surveyor - they were working long hours so he didn't get much time to do too much drinking this time which is good! Greece is a good place to start for sailing because it's often flat seas and it's going to be nice and warm. On a sea trial you take a boat out, you get the sails up the engine on and you test everything to see if it works and you also see if you actually like the way the boat sails. This is the Amel Super Maramu, 53 Foot. We're doing the sea trials.. just off the coast of Lefkas So I'm really glad we got the survey done by someone who we really trust and yeah, i's a good 27 pages and all the things that highlighted - stuff that we probably weren't aware of actually. Loads of things need changing, lots repairs, some things need replacing the generator needs a lot of work on it. Engine’s okay but needs a good overhaul. It's basically like to doer upper. Obviously there's a lot of money we've got to put into it to fix it up. So I'm really excited that we finally got that stage - we found a really good sea worthy, strong boat and that's the main thing for me really. So I'm kind of excited about finding that boats and I’m also really excited about going but I know at the moment the excitement isn’t really there because I'm just trying to get the thing done. We've put a deposit down and we hope the deposit is secure because the last deposit we put down on a boat the money got lost for about 10 weeks and we thought we'd never get it back again. That was a very stressful time. We’ve advertised the house now so it’s available for four weeks from today and it's not very long really. We've had viewings already, someone came around yesterday unexpectedly, the house was a tip and I think they were quite surprised it didn't like it did in the photos. So I’ve got a long list of things that he doing in the house from painting various bits and pieces and clearing it out - there's still other things that need clearing really. So we've got the car that needs selling, the house that needs doing up in places and clearing out, we need to pack and we've also got the kids holiday. I'd rather they're out there being active than just hanging around me not being able to do stuff with them. I'm fine, I’ve just got a millions of things I've got to. I don't feel like I'm really spend time the kids enough, but they quite like being at home don't you kids? Yeah! I've got lots of friends, I'd like to see them all before we go but at the moment I'm just finding that hard as well, to fit that in. We need to get away by September because the boat is in the yard until the 18th of September so we've got to get there a few weeks before to paint the bottom and do various job before we even launch it in the water, so it is quite kind of stressful - like even doing this at the moment.

You must have seen Sailing SV Delos, surely? That Amel yacht is a very robust, seaworthy boat, I saw the videos, boy they took it through some beatings, it stood all of it. Good luck!

I'm just glad to see you are an experienced sailor and got yourself a solid craft. I hope the children take onto it too. I went to school on a ship at the age of 13 in 1967 to become an officer and gentleman, haha. I'm 65 now and wrung a lot of seawater from my socks!

+whispjohn they're very robust and unique boats with a cult following. We were lucky to find ours really. Yes we've been catching up with the Delos vlogs since setting out.. picking up maintenance and vlogging tips!

Looking forward to your adventures. Did you say you had lost a previous deposit. I am looking to buy a yacht this year in the med and worry about paying a deposit and losing it.

Thank you for this information. It would be a worry if money went missing forever.
I am happy your money returned to you.

Yes, our deposit went 'missing' for 12 weeks in total, during a Caribbean/US bank transfer. I got in touch with the YBAA who told us, 'There are many incidents of wire transfer hacking where monies have been fraudulently directed to offshore accounts with no chance of recovery.' The broker was very reputable and it wasn't their fault, but it was a very stressful time on both sides and eventually the money just popped into their account with no real explanation. You should be OK with European transfers as the banking regulation is very stringent here but still, you have no control which 'intermediary' banks are used during the process. Maybe we were just unlucky, but I'd be very wary when buying in the Caribbean. For the boat we've just bought we got ourselves a Forfex manager (although I hear XE are good as well) to transfer between currencies and it just took a couple of days.

No UK, but they're available in the US too as our friends manage to get one there - so they must be universally available. Sorry, I haven't got a product code - and IKEA is pretty useless for online shopping so can't seem to find it online either.. :/

I wish I was on commission for the map Kevin - everyone asks about it and loads of friends and family have bought one since we've had it up on the wall.. amazingly it's just from IKEA!

The Amel Super Maramu is a very good boat, but takes lots of maintenance! The more electronics you have on board, the more will fail or break. A sailing boat should always be managable without power and el. devises as well and this at any condition!

Amels are renowned for being able to sail short handed but they do come with a lot of electronic gear as standard.. I guess it's just a matter of keeping on top of the maintenance! We're also used to sailing keelboats so pretty good at manoeuvring under sail.. if the need arises!

Hi guys hope things are going ok exciting time, again could you email me details of the yacht with the forward bunks and head in the bow, manufacture and the broker if possible any any comments you may have about this boat. Many thanks. best regards from Melbourne Aus.

There were so many yachts and videos, that they all got a mixed up in the end so can't really remember.. the Oyster 465 definitely had that configuration - custom built I think - and the other was either a Hallberg Rassy or Colvic. They were both listed in Lefkas/Prevesa, Greece with either Network yacht brokers or Williams and Smythells.. so I'm sure if you did some detective work on Yachtworld you might be able to find them if they're still listed. The one that stood out most was a Nauticat which had a sauna in the forepeak!

If you ever have any doubts about the Amel, check out s/v Delos. The boat is a tank ;)

We've seen a few of their videos and fully intend on doing a popcorn style 'box set' watching session.. when we find the time! It's true, Amels have an awesome reputation - although not the most beautiful of boats it has to be said ;)

hi back great to hear from you yep i was confused didn't think Amel made a configuration like that, that's what i am after, but the Amel are a fantastic yacht, but huge money here in Aus we have to travel to Europe to buy anything. Cheers to you all and safe and happy voyages.

Well we looked at several models and just happened on this Amel when on a search in Greece about three months ago. The configuration I think you're referring to was in a Halberg Rassy, Oyster or Colvic.. one of the many boats we looked at and videoed on that trip. I agree it's a fantastic layout but alas NOT available on the Amels. As good as Amels are, the layout options are pretty much 'take it or leave it'.
