We were toying with the idea of doing this, going from New York to london with our 5 year old(would be 6 by the time we do it) I think it would be quite an experience for his first trip to europe. Do you think that would work or is it completely nuts to take a 6 year old on this? I mean would he get bored, are there ever any other children or is it all retired folks? Would they tolerate children?
Tips For Travellers

I wouldn’t recommend this for young kids. There may be some others and he should enjoy the kids clubs but he is more likely to find it boring as the ship and whole experience is very much designed for adults

I was looking forward to this video but was greatly disappointed. I wanted to see the ship, inside and out, instead, we had to look at this guy face over 80% of the time. Not for me. There are so many videos here on youtube were the poster feels to need to feed his ego by having us look at his face.

nonsense, it's a snooze fest. do not believe this guy. it was extremely boring and there is nothing to do. you cannot smoke except on the second floor back section or the 16th-floor cigar room for smokers. it's a bunch of pretentious people trying to pretend they are royalty. this would be a great trip if they did it in the four days. and please remember it's a carnival ship

Any advice for a single man, as in one person, crossing on the QE2. I'm not a nightlife, party, take in the shows kind of person. I like to relax, stargaze, read a book, or listen to a podcast. I'm not much on television or movies. Could I take my meals in my cabin, ala room service?

There are a lot of solo travellers on board and yes easy to do what you want. So room service, Lido etc. There is lots of space about. I would happily do solo

After many cruises, my wife and I finally sailed on Cunard twice last year, once on the Queen Victoria and on the the Queen Mary II. We did not do a crossing in the Queen Mary, but did a 14-day cruise from New York to Quebec and back to New York, with three days docked in Quebec. I think the Queen Mary is a wonderful ship. We had 40 knot winds with 30 foot seas and never felt it. I loved the lectures and the planetarium, which is unique. Also, their library is fantastic. The ship is unusual, but that is part of the charm. As you suggest, I would highly recommend this ship, especially if you don’t mind getting dressed up in the evening, which adds to the experience. It is something you will not regret. I am just watching a lot of your videos and like what you present. With nearly 30 cruises, I am following you for some clues on how to get more variety into our cruises. Look forward to more.

Nice video. I got a real belly laugh out of the reason to go west rather than east. The trip takes the same amount of time, you only have the perception of it taking longer because you turn the clocks back. You could achieve the same effect by turning the clocks back an hour going eastbound and then moving them ahead in a five hour jump when you arrive. If you do it that night, you'll have the perception of wasting less time sleeping and have more time at your destination. :)

My family returned from Europe in 1958 on the Queen Elizabeth in the midst of a substantial storm and goodness, I was so seasick I thought I would die but was afraid I might not. We crossed twice in 1964 and 65 on the original Rotterdam (a lovely ship) but don't remember having any similar problems. In any case you usually get your sea legs in about 24 hours anyway -- at least a ten-year-old does.

Re: Seasickness. I am terribly prone to seasickness, but I love cruising so I go to my doctor a week before I sail and ask for Transderm Scop (tm) patches. Put one behind your ear every three days, and no seasickness!

In 1965 we sailed from Cobh, Ireland on Cunards RMS Sylvania and returned a couple of years later on the Queen Mary. They were filming the movie ‘ Assault on a Queen’.

Base on your experiences what would you recommend as a suitable amount of money such as £1000 or $1,500 USD. Perhaps even lower at £500 or $700. Essential, for couple pints in the pub daily and such. Where you be comfortable and not stressful about ever pound or dollar.
Many thanks for sharing thoughts and suggestions.
Cheers!

I've only made one transatlantic crossing, as an 18-year-old, and my main complaint was that the seas were too calm! I was expecting to experience the huge crashing waves that I saw in Hollywood films. True to your suggestions, it was during the summertime, so now I will plan to make my second crossing during the winter months. Hmm, maybe after they launch Titanic II...

I travelled back and forth on the Canadian Pacific 'Empress of Britain' and 'Empress of Canada' several times, as well as the 'TSS Stefan Batory' back in the early 70s. Loved every moment. I've wondered about this trip but the recent refit seems to have been an attempt to modernise the ship to more closely resemble the (ghastly) floating hotels most cruisers will use. I also wonder about the luggage requirements - the wife would clearly need multiple dresses, even if I only need one tuxedo or good suit - couple that with your day to day requirements and I can see a massive excess-baggage bill on the flight back.

Took it last year from Australia to Hong Kong room quite spacious, but their buffet is quite limited in choice and their fine dining is not as tasty as the Royal Carribiean and the fare is a bit more costly. I hope I don't sound racist but the passengers onboard are much more civilized unlike other cruses where they cut in at buffet lines and speaking loudly.

1 advice is don't go during Chinese New Year everything is closed except McD :( And summer is like sauna 24/7. But the food is heavenly and the enviroment is real safe. The place is choked with mainlanders that you can hardly walk a straight path without bumping into someone. Was there twice once in the early 2000s for work meeting and only spent a day looking around the other was only half a day on a day tour with the cruse ship.

Dear Gary, my wife and I will be on the QM2 for the 13 day cruise to the caribbean. We will be mid ship in Queen's grill. As you suggested. This will be our fifty wedding anniversary.
It was 49 nine years since our last cruise on the Oceanic. Going on the QM2 is my bucket list.
I have over the last few months watched every video you have. Thank you very much.
By the way, since we booked very early, our cruise agent made changes to the cost everytime the price went down for our Queen's suite or offered aspecial discount. They made changes to location since Ifirst wanted to be close to the dining area. I remembered we shouldn't be at the back. We can walk just fine from mid ship and lose any extra pounds that we may encounter during our cruise. Big ha ha! Also we are on the same deck as the Commodore club. Once again, thanks for all your videos. Oh yes Cunard said they will have a special recognition at the first formal get together for our 50th. Signed, another GARY.

I did a transatlantic crossing (NYC to Southampton) on QM2 in 2016. It was a bucket list dream, and well worth every penny. It’s probably the closest one will ever get to replicating the North Atlantic crossing days of the 1930s and before. She’s such an incredible ship! First class from top to bottom. She’s a true ocean liner in the tradition of the Titanic, Lusitania and Ile de France. A mere “cruise ship” she is not! I highly recommend a transatlantic crossing on this gorgeous ship if you ever get the chance!

QM2 is a fantastic ship. I traveled on the Queen Elizabeth 2 many times starting as a child on a 1970 transatlantic crossing. I preferred QE2's faster 5-day crossings but the facilities, cabins and dining options on QM2 can't be beat. On our 4 trips on the ship we booked a Queens Grill grade suite once and a Princess Grill grade mini suite three times. The service and food was always perfect. On the transatlantic crossings the dress is formal while at sea which means a suit or tux/dinner jacket for the men. If you don't feel like dressing up there are other less formal dining options onboard.

Went on QM2 last year, I agree with all of your good advice. It was a wonderful ship and you’d have to be a very difficult person to please if you were afraid of getting bored, there were parts of the ship I didn’t even get a chance to use in 5 days. The complimentary room service was wonderful. The only thing that disappointed me was the quality of the food in the Britannia dining room, I’m not a fussy eater and I had to very politely send a meal back and received major attitude from the wait staff thereafter and no apology, it was basically a plate of sliced fat with gravy over it supposed to be lamb. Not good enough for $900 per day. You do have to take a lot of luggage to cope with the dress code if you don’t want to wear the same thing each evening. Despite all of that I’m going again in February !

Great video explication of the difference between a cruise ship and an ocean liner was spot on.
Please remember fellow viewer that the Queen Mary 2 is operated to make money.
If you write to Cunard Southampton and try to arrange an 80th birthday surprise for a passenger who turns 80 whilst onboard.
Cunard will refuse your request and point you in the direction of the onboard tours available.
Which part of the word surprise was not understood baffles me.

well Mr Buck, being a fan of corn whiskey as well as the south I am not offended by your confederate flag ID. However, I can tell you from my own experience that the QM2 is no more expensive to travel on than most cruise ships. It just has the option of traveling first class. Different ships appeal to different crowds so if dressing formal is offensive to you I suggest you not offend those who enjoy it by booking on another line. You obviously like the Confederate ideal, I would like to direct you to research the idea of a southern gentleman, or southern belle. These were not rednecks nor were most confederates. Manners and class were very important to the people who fought under the very flag you use to identify yourself.

Question as an American am I allowed to bring my carry pistol? Also I want to get a cabin for me and my kids closes to the life boats what cabin do you sugest? Also is it by class still 1st class first in to the life boats, then 2nd class, then 3rd class? Also still women and children first? And as an average American how much would a trip cost me if I was to do 1st class?
David Rimlees
David Rimlees - 6 years ago
Can I believe this comment Itdan459...Why the hell would you want to take a pistol on the QM? This is truly a scary scenario and I'm just wondering why you would want to shoot anyone on board? Maybe it is so you can be first into the lifeboat after we hit the iceberg! This confirms the difference between the Brits & the Americans......

No, you cant take weapons. There is equal and consistent approach to muster drills and lifeboats. In Queens grill the cost per person would range from about $4,000 up to $35,00 per person

Gary, We have booked passage on the QM 2 on the 11/11--11/25/18 roundtrip NY, Southampton, NY sailing. We took your advice and booked a sheltered balcony mid-ship on deck 6. Is the muster held in the public rooms or do you stand on the decks similar to HAL? One person in our party has difficulty standing for long periods of time; is there a place for people who can't stand for long times where they can be seated?

As a very rural country person who only has one pair of khaki pants and one button up shirt saved back for weddings and funerals the talk of dress code was disappointing. I can understand not allowing disrespectful and patently sloppy clothing but I grew up in and around generations of people that had honor, honesty, and decency without having "external trappings".

I guess if my wife and I ever manage to plan a visit to the "old countries" we'll go by air. I'd prefer spending money on enjoyable things to DO on our trip rather than spend half the trip money on a upper tier wardrobe that will never be worn again lol.

You can get a excellent make dark suit for $12 at Salvation Army or Goodwill. Or a new (tuxedo) suit at Men's Wear house for for $100. Get off the farm and explore your shopping options. You probably want to invest in a dark suit anyway for your funeral, anyway. Think of that $12 bucks as an investment that will last forever.

Hi Possumlove I too was concerned about the dress code thing after watching this video so I've done a heap of research and it's clear you can more or less wear whatever you like in several of the less formal dining areas - for men cargo pants and a shirt, perhaps but not strictly a jacket too. The formal dining rooms, on Gala nights only, require men to wear a suit of a dark colour and a tie or cravat. Check out this not-at-all-formal Cunard guide - https://www.cunard.co.uk/life-on-board/what-to-pack/ Although Gary's video its very informative it does lead you to believe that men must wear a Tux and bow tie! No True. I'm now a lot more relaxed about the dress code thing altogether., so hope you are too! :-)

+Possumlove - you will be just fine in jeans but after 6pm they'll expect you to change into something more respectable. Remember, wearing fine clothes is not a smart move if planning to spend time outside. Keeping warm and dry should always be your priority.
Possumlove
Possumlove - 6 years ago
Sweat pants and T shirts fall under the category of patently sloppy do they not? I said I UNDERSTOOD not allowing patently sloppy dress. However there is still a difference between dressing DECENT and dressing UP. You can dress decent wearing jeans and a nice button up shirt/polo. It may be a "informal" decent but it's NOT sloppy. Stylish doesn't mean "more decent". Clean and orderly dress is decent enough.

After many crossings on the QE2 and QM2 I totally recommend the January crossing. It is usually the beginning of the world cruise for the US Passengers. The crowd is great fun, there are many regulars who love the winter crossing. It's an amazing travel experience. This year we left New York late in a snow storm, followed the storm slowly for 2 days, then went flat out to Southampton, arriving only 45 mins after scheduled arrival time. She is an amazing piece of engineering.

These ships are no longer beautiful ships. The old Queen Mary was so beautiful. The interiors of the QM2 similar to the QM1, but the exterior Comparing the beautiful old Queen Mary to the ugly new Queen Mary. It looks like a building lying sideways. All the new ships being built now are no longer long, sleek and graceful ships, but rather tall, bulky, and ugly.

Personally out of all Cunard's ships I like the Queen Victoria one because it seemed to be more traditional with its interior design. The QM2 just underwent a refurbishment and I don't like it. They've replaced a lot of the beautiful wood with chrome and glass to make it more "modernized" but it just looks like the inside of a shopping mall now. Victoria still has the wood and wrought iron staircases and stained glass everywhere.

Could I join a Cunard or other cruise ship at Liverpool if its next port of call was Dublin as a better way to cross the Irish Sea? - currently, as I prefer to (not) fly, I usually get the Irish Ferries "Ulysses" (Cruise Ferry) or the Stena Adventurer from Holyhead to Dublin, but given my Manchester location and the fact that Dublin Port has recently been expanded to take cruise ships, Liverpool Port is more suitable for me despite the 8 hours crossing time (as opposed to 3 hours 15 mins from Holyhead to Dublin) - also I live in North Manchester and my family home is located 20 miles from Dublin, easily accessible from the Dublin Port Tunnel & the M50 Motorway, avoiding Dublin City Centre where my family could easily pick me up from Dublin Port - I do know that the QM2 and other similar ships of these types would have called at Cobh near Cork City in Ireland on thier way to and from Ellis Island in New York
Tips For Travellers
Tips For Travellers - 6 years ago
The Crossings tend to leave from Southampton only though, and don’t call at those ports. Liverpool is being called on but tend to be on round Britain cruises. It is unlikely that any line would sell a leg between two ports unfortunately

Patricia Ireland
Patricia Ireland - 5 years ago
Cunard's world cruise itinerary is one of the shortest in the biz (only 89 to -- at most -- 120 nights). Even worse, I've seen some versions of the itinerary that don't even make a trans-Atlantic or trans-Pacific crossing, and merely sail around Europe, southeastern Asia and Australia, then hit the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean en route back to Southampton. It strikes me as rather silly that the cruise line which operates the only true ocean liners in the world won't cross the oceans on all of their "world" cruises.
Compare that to Viking: 245 nights on a trip that (a) fully circumnavigates the globe, (b) goes as far north as the coast of Norway and as far south as Cape Horn, and (c) even includes perks like a cruise of the Thames, the St Lawrence, and the Amazon.
If you're going to take a world cruise, why not take one that actually goes around the world?

It's wonderful, trust me.
Our inside cabin was large, compared to other ships, remember, there is little to see out of the window in the middle of the Atlantic, it's not like opening your curtains on a cruise and seeing another port. It's a pity one end of each trip is in America.

I had the privilege of spending 52 days of my life on QM2, not all at once, and will probably never get to go back again. However, they've ruined so much of the original ambiance and art of the ship that I'm not sure I want to go back. Where is the ship I knew? I'm glad to see scenes from the early days here like the ship model displayed between the two lifts, now gone, in the grand lobby. And the original carpet design was so much nicer than that shattered coloured glass focal point. Its such a shame to see the original art of deck 7 vanish as if it were never there.

I can't believe the comments about the QM2 crossing being dull. I have done seven crossings on this ship (and many on other ships over the past 43 years) and there is something for everyone. The entertainment covers the whole range from usual pop rubbish that is on all ships right up to classical concerts and sometimes an abridged version of one of Shakespeare's plays - and everything in between, of course. There is fine dining and the ubiquitous buffet/cafeteria. As for the dress code, a tuxedo is not required on the formal nights (three per crossing). The Cunard info clearly indicates that a suit and tie is an acceptable alternative. However, from my experience on three Cunard ships, there have been between 60 and 90% of men in tuxedos in the Britannia restaurant and in the single-sitting premium restaurants (Britannia Club, Princess Grill and Queen's Grill) it has always been around 95%.

W Coyote For what it’s worth I love Viking! But I wouldn’t compare them to QM2 however. They definitely provide the first class and relaxing vacation I love but don’t go crazy with dress codes either! Most of the time it’s simple resort casual, more like a day at the golf course over visiting the Queen. Much more my speed!

I’m sure it’s great! My biggest fear is simply not fitting in! I’m a middle aged business owner and have money but I’m definitely not a high society in all the best social circles type of person. QE2 Lover,
Yes you’re spot on, a fantastic experience at least for my wife and I. A crossing is a romantic, gastronomic and enjoyable experience. If you’re someone who doesn’t enjoy cruising, then you won’t be disappointed. Now however if you have experience or like my wife and I have limited, but are intrigued by the fantasy of cruising you’ll have a fantastic time. The dress code just intensifies the mood of being
in a dramatic environment. Must all travel be reduced to the cattle car affect of plane travel today? Seasickness wasn’t much of problem for our July crossing. I recommend that you try it.You may just like it.
W Coyote
W Coyote - 6 years ago
i have been cruising for almost 40 years, since graduating from college - and I have learned early on is that cruise lines cater to a specific economic or age of cruisers. Companies like Carnival cater towards High Schoolers and the College party crowds, whereas Viking and Cunard lines cater to the more older and affluent types. My first cruise as a young man was on one of those catering to the older crowd, and at Twenty I did not appreciate the laid back, sedentary activities...whereas now at 60, I still do not but my much older friends do. I have cruised Carnival lately and I found them loud and always busy with multitudes of activities - many of which I enjoyed, but sometimes i was only one of few in my age group participating. the point is if you don`t do your research you could end up on a cruise from HELL! :)

Everyone I was expecting more, as in more activities , more clubs and a better variety of food . The Norwegian Escape from the crew, to food is 10 times better. Since The Q M 2 is an ocean liner??????????, the service and variety, should not be as good as The Escape. I believe the problem stems with Carnival Cruises owning The Q m 2. The reason I take The Q M 2 , it is safer and nicer than flying. Many people say flying, is safer than driving, I shall take my chances in a car. I have flown all all types of aircraft , except a private jet.

This is the third or fourth posing of gripes I have read from you Joseph - if you dislike the cultured refinement of the QM2 so much, may I suggest you go for the floating office-block type of cruise ship, where there will be plenty of "entertainment" and a cruise director to take care of your needs. Horses for courses, as they say.
Nuntius
Nuntius - 6 years ago
Joseph Forest - these grizzles point to your falling into the wrong demographic to say nothing of other failings. Most of your fellow passengers are likely to be baby boomers, educated, well-off or reasonably well-off, either retired or nearing retirement. In the main they will be British and North American with a sprinkling of “others”, traditionally Cunard’s staple. As Cunard well know their typical passengers on a North Atlantic voyage don’t require cruise directors to oversee their entertainment and don’t anticipate passengers hankering for rock climbing, bumper cars, water slides and any other Butlinesque gimmicks family orientated cruise lines are constantly dreaming up. You are better catered for by the airlines. So go off and enjoy.

I'd argue that catastrophic failure is always the risk you take, however unlikely, regardless of what vehicle you're traveling in. One stands to survive longer after a catastrophe on a ship than on a plane. Long enough to be rescued, at least before the ship sinks entirely. In addition to the less stressful encounters with the general public unfortunate to be traveling with you. If money and time are no objects, I'd take a ship before taking a plane.

This brings back so many memories. My father ran the photography business on the United States. He was American, my mother was British. They had me but weren't married, a scandal in the early 60's. Because of this my mother had to go back to England every 6 months to renew her visa. I did so many Trans-Atlantic crossings on the Queen Elizabeth, United States and the original Queen Mary. I missed the first week of Second Grade to sail on the maiden voyage of the QE2. I remember watching my parents dress to the nines, me too but I had to eat at the children's table. I remember so many Atlantic storms. A way of life that doesn't exist. I'm so glad I was able to experience it!

Tips For Travellers It really was. That world no longer exists but it was fun to have been a small part of it as a child. I took a transatlantic sailing on the QE2 with my mother in 1985. This ship, that as a child had seemed so vast, was actually so small compared to today's mammoth cruise ships! I absolutely agree that if you can sail a transatlantic voyage don't hesitate, just do it. It's a throwback to a different time and place, even if it's only for a few days!

I enjoyed this cruise more than I thought I would. I had only done 1 and 2 week cruises with Regents Seven Seas before where we have different places to visit each day and everything was included. The food was ok and no where near as good as with Regents except for the French Signature restaurant we went to on one day. The wine was ok and we bought a package to drink with meals which I recommend. We are not used to having the same people for meals at our table and were lucky to have 2 nice couples but can imagine it would have been horrible to be stuck all week if we didn’t get on. The cabin was very comfortable and I liked the tea making facilities which you don’t get with Regents. The shows were not that great as I don’t think they used their on board company enough giving us only one big show, preferring to bring in so called famous acts. However the RADA company were fantastic and I recommend going to their shows and workshops. Loved the planetarium and the talks. The refit was very good and particularly liked the amount of lounges and bars.

What a great video!  Thank you.  I've been on the Queen Mary 2 -for a Caribbean cruise.  I've been on a few cruise lines, but Cunard does it best.  I have a question -I've read that Cunard's current Queen Elizabeth is an ocean liner like the QM2, but that the Queen Victoria is a converted cruise ship.  Is this true?  I love both types, but my fondness is for actual ocean liners.  (I LOVE the Normandie, and the S.S. United States is currently rotting away in my hometown of Philadelphia -in the Delaware River, across from an Ikea store!)  When I was on the QM2 with my friend, I asked the staff what the best sailings were and they all said that the Trans-Atlantic journeys were the best.  They said that they, and the passengers, had nothing else to do but have a great time.  I was impressed by the Caribbean cruise I took on the QM2.  At the time the QM2 was the largest ship of its type in the world, but I never felt crowded.  I was pleased to find that Cunard allowed their staff to go on shore excursions if they could.  My friend and I went snorkeling in the Grand Caymans and were surprised that the bartender from the night before and one of our waiters (we were Princess Grille and had more than one waiter) were on the same snorkeling adventure.  That night we all talked about how much fun it was and how the colorful fish swam right up to us and then darted away.  And then came back!  It was a wonderful shared experience!  I really liked that Cunard allowed for this.  Anyway, this is a great video.  Thank you!

Thanks. Great to hear that you enjoyed the video and also the QM2. Both the Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth are cruise ships built using the Vista Class hull and format. In fact the layout inside is exactly the same! Vista Class was used for many other ships owned by the Carnival Corporation (who own Cunard) like many of the Holland America and P&O ships

Having just done a transatlantic in both directions in Dec 2017, I concur with most what you say. Personally I found the travel to Southampton better as the clocks were changed at midday, but going to New York they were changed at 2am and my body clock didn’t adapt to the extra hour every night the clocks were changed, my body clock was still waking at 8am GMT, so by the time I arrived in NY, I was waking up about 4am New York time and of course it doesn’t help as December are the shortest days! For some particular reason there does appear to be more sea swell off the coast of the British Isles into the North Atlantic where there is more noticeable pitching even though the sea state maybe only a force 3 to 4, I assume this maybe to do with the various currents coming from the Irish Sea, the Sea of Biscay and off the coast of Ireland. However the QM2 sailed through a violent storm force 11 off the US and ship sailed through it as if it was no more than a force 5, so don’t worry about QM2 not being capable of sailing in rough weather, it copes with it admirably. I know I wouldn’t have sailed across the North Atlantic in mid winter in the other Queens!

We spent five days on the QM2 to France and Belgium in November 2016. Fabulous ship, the best I have ever been on, really felt like a liner and not a cruise ship. We got a very good deal and a free balcony upgrade. It would be very easy to spend a fortune on there as the shops were very high end and the bars expensive but we managed not to spend a single penny on drinks, just drinking tea, coffee and fruit juice for free in Kings Court and water at the table. People dressed up every single night not just formal nights but we really liked that, and the afternoon teas were a lovely touch although you did have to queue for a long time to get in. We are hoping to do the Transatlantic Crossing soon but I would rather fly there and sail back - no jet lag or excess baggage for the outlet shopping!

I was fortunate enough to be in my teens and twenties during the "50's and "60's. We traveled on the Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mary, the United States, the Michael Angelo, the Hanseatic, the Constitution, and various Canadian steamers out of Montreal. I never regretted a single trip.

Your videos are very informative and I appreciate all the information. I'm a senior and should have traveled earlier in life but never had the opportunity. Now I have but have physical limitations with my knees, which you never seem to address.

I'd like to take the river cruises but I'm really concerned about all the walking. So how do these Cruise Lines accommodate people who are unable to walk long distances or have physical handicaps?
Surely with many of the cruise lines that pander to seniors you would assume they would also consider health issues.

Are there any travels that accommodate these concerns?
Christine Paige
Christine Paige - 6 years ago
Hello -- I hope that you will inquire and express your concerns to specific cruise lines and find out what amenities they offer to people with limited mobility or just "bad knees" (I have the latter problem!). I did the Atlantic crossing on Queen Mary 2 and I recall that pretty much every place you go on the ship, there are ramps (or alternatively, elevators) as well as stairs. On the other hand, the corridors are very long and if you can't walk very far, that could be a problem. But please, contact the various cruise lines about your specific situation. It would be such a shame for you to miss out on this experience if you can find a ship that caters to older people. I have heard that Holland America Line is very senior-friendly. Good luck!
Tips For Travellers
Tips For Travellers - 6 years ago
River cruising is not great for limited mobility mostly due to the nature of the old villages and towns which have lots of cobbled streets, steps etc. Saying that All will have a gentle walking tour option for people who cannot get around as easily and check if the ship has a lift to move between floors without the steps. Most modern ones do.

Unhappy staff? Where? When? Surely I have yet to meet one. 29 days on Cunard (three cruises, one on each ship) and I have yet to encounter a frown or a reason to complain re: staff.

To compare Cunard to Norwegian is laughably ridiculous.

There are several companies which will send a suitcase or bag home for you at the end of your crossing - that's what we plan to do in October - send a bag full of our formal wear, shoes, and maybe some dirty washing back home to avoid trailing it round New York. (Luggage Free and Luggage Forward are 2 US firms, but Cunard also have a "White Star" service using DHL/Fedex to do the same thing, though more expensively)
Nuntius
Nuntius - 6 years ago
Stuart Lee - the additional luggage can be a hassle particularly if flying to the port of embarkation (and it was!) and it's something you have to plan for. But this is nothing new; formal wear has always been a necessary evil of ocean voyaging. I suggest a dark suit and appropriate accessories.
Tips For Travellers
Tips For Travellers - 6 years ago
Yes, the Cunard dress code will allow dark suits and tie. This is what they say "Formal: Dinner jacket, tuxedo or dark suit with tie for gentlemen.  A range of gentlemen’s formal wear is available to hire on board. Evening or cocktail dress for ladies." I have found most people wear Tux but you are right some prefer suits.
Helen Bowes
Helen Bowes - 6 years ago
I have recently (November 2017) travelled from Southampton to New York on QM2. My husband took a suit and was allowed into the dining room for Formal dinners. There were many men in suits and not tuxedos. They wore jacket and tie for the other nights. Semi-formal dress was adequate for women on formal nights. You don't need to take a tuxedo.

On my bucket list of things to do: Take a trip on a real ocean liner, not a huge hotel that happens to float.
radamik
radamik - 5 years ago
Yes an ocean liner instead of a “cruise” ship - these huge newer ones don’t even look like ships, they don’t even give them real names anymore (the “blah blah of the seas”) - the ocean liners of the 50s and 60s were so gorgeous in their decor, the Italian and French ships especially. Even the original QE2 of 1969 was luxurious sixties mod London. My favorite was the I’ll fated Andrea Doria with incredible murals, an espresso machine at every bar, and in some cabins metallic satin bedspreads. Very cool.

The Rotterdam was one the really great old “ocean” liners of the 50s and 60s with their modern decor and artwork that represented the countries of their origin. For people who love mid century design they are often the best examples of it. When they docked in N Y they were open to the public and I’m sure they were visited by the top architects and designers for inspiration.

Thanks Gary, excellent as always. I have spent many days on QM2 in Queens Grill (very expensive) and I did not care for any of it. Even after the recent refit/smartening up.
People need to remember this is another Carnival Group offering, not British, and costs on board are in Dollars. As if that was not bad enough drinks are expensive and an extra tip of ?15% is added to your bill. The Queens Grill cabin seats were cheap and too firm. The queens Grill cocktail bar and so called private deck area are so poor forget them. The Queens Grill food is ordinary.
Last of all my complaints is that you dock in Brooklyn, not the old Cunard pier downtown New York. On the ship because the lifeboats are located at some height Queens Grill cabins may even look out onto a lifeboat. I think you can tell I did not like the ship!
Nuntius
Nuntius - 6 years ago
What you should have said is “overlook the massive line of lifeboats” but only in the event of finding your view obscured as implied would a complaint be justified.
Peter PeterM
Peter PeterM - 6 years ago
Well Nuntius read my words again. I said "look out onto a lifeboat" what I should have said was massive line of lifeboats. I would post a photo if the site allowed. It was not a good view from one of the most expensive cabins.
Nuntius
Nuntius - 6 years ago
No Grills staterooms have their view obscured by lifeboats. That includes the QG suites on Deck 8 which are positioned well aft of the lifeboats.
Tips For Travellers
Tips For Travellers - 6 years ago
Definitely sounds like you are not a fan. I agree with you that they could have done a better job at having all the QG aspects together. Other lines have crated havens etc which has all the features in one place and more exclusive feeling. I have had better QG experiences on Victoria and Elizabeth

You didn't mention Britannia Club, which has its own restaurant where you can dine when you want and your table is yours for every meal. Also, in my experience, tables for two (if that's what you choose) are allocated to the people who booked earliest as well as cabin grade.
