Norman Boyes and Lazy Days provide some good information. While in Germany pick up a good dial indicator.
That is some thing you should have on your boat as a necessary tool because as others have stated this will not be the only time you will line up the shaft. I provided a link to SV Prism video about the Sigma fitting I don't have any personal knowledge about it. (97) Prism Reviews: Bruntons Sigma Drive - YouTube
It is some thing to research.

Guten Morgan, Hello from Lake Michigan in the USA, Chicago/Milwaukee area, I like your ongoing videos. You did a great job, but as mentioned elsewhere, wow, working in barefeet, you are a tough guy. Having your father and brother to help you brought back memories of working on our family boat with my father. Brought a small tear to my eye, as now I have a larger sailboat, 41' Coronado, center cockpit, and I miss having him around to re-engineer solutions, and fix things. He was a retired electrical engineer, so everything was well thought out and built to overspec, lol. Enjoy your time with your dad and brother. Great video,......Skipper Andy

Nice work, it looks like you installed as close as original motor mounts, I glad to see that as when I had new mounts put in we used what was available at the time, they were more rounded looking, anyway, I could immediately feel the difference, I can feel the vibration of the engine under my feet. Bummer, wish I had insisted on the original mounts. Enjoy your trip home.

After 50(?) years running for how many mileages, do the engine still run strong? Rebuild? Like 4WD vehicle, theoretically, regular maintain or some repair is not that difficult but labor intensive. (Engine or transmission or transfer case rebuilt need some solid experience.) Your whole family like team come help. That's great! After everything installed and mount, maybe show us how things function or look, before and after.

Alignment specs are that there is to be no more than a .003 space at any point between the faces of the transmission and prop shaft flanges. The alignment must be done with the boat in the water, and should be redone if the boat is taken out of the water and relaunched as the hull shape changes slightly when the boat is in the water versus out. Also - I would recommend a flexible coupling as it will reduce vibration and strain on the prop shaft and transmission as slight variations in the shaft angle take place as the hull flexes when underway. The result of incorrect alignment over a period of time can be a broken prop shaft where it meets the flange, plus unnecessary wear on the cutless bearing. My qualifications for this comment: I worked in the sailboat building business for 16 years and am familiar with all phases of construction and many maintenance recommendations. However, I would still verify my comments with the yard mechanic. Good Sailing!!

What about that flexible coupling? Something to think about on Vacation. Consider it Homework, young man.

Nice job. The engine looks good. I am pretty sure you will get the alignment right when it comes time to do so. You are determined and that counts for a lot.

You really are amazing! I am sure a project like that would have cost you thousands if done by a "professionall". Thankfully you know which end of a wrench to hold! Loved that you used WD-40 as lube. We here in the states would call that "Yankee Enginuity"! Enjoy your trip to the Bahamas and home. I looked like your were in Santa Barbara harbor, yes?

Funny i just put my 500lb new yanmar in my boat yesterday solo. Using my boom. I have a hard dodger and had to cut a small 2 inch hole in it to get a come along chain on it.then getting it into the companion way and hanging 7 feet from the engine mounts.
I was shitting myself . Saw pictures of sv prisims old engine crashing down the companion way imbeding itself into the boat floor. Crazy.
My answer to the engine alignment was simple . Buy a new sigma drive and get it close and call it a day.
Im not done yet but i put new engine in and took old engine out yesterday.
Drop in replacement. But still only after 11 years 15,000 hours most things even not rusty at all had to be cut off. Like shaft coupling and cutlass bearing. , getting the propeller off was crazy hard.
So i realize there needs to be a more taking apart more often and cleaning and lubricating.
Check out prisms blog and look at there engine installation blog and see how lucky they are to be in one piece and still floating. also watch there video on the sigma drive. It convinced me. But its not 500.00 its 675.00 with shipping
Worth it.
Thanks for sharing. Great stuff.
