Ah, two great nations divided by a common language. Ed, if ever you come over to the UK, be sure to look up the meaning of 'fanny'. That said, taking the American interpretation of the word actually makes fannypit non-sexist, so you're right!

hi guys, is everything ok to continue your adventure? I have a question (may be it is not the right moment...). I am really courious to know if you did some videos on your trip to reach the Indian Ocean. Did you cross the Suez canal and the Red sea? Or you circumnavigate Africa? I wish to have some informations on the best route to get to Madagascar, from the Mediterranean Sea. Your advices, opinions and experience. You said you were in Turkey before to reach India and Southeast Asia, so how did you plan your next destination? Sorry it is more than a question! Thanks, peace and love. Fair wind el venesian P.S. if anybody else has such experience and knowlege please get in touch.

Check out our website, www.followtheboat.com, for blogs about life in Turkey and the passage from Turkey through the Red Sea to India. We made the trip in 2010, so some of the information will be out of date. We also have a series of podcasts which we made during the trip which are full of information. One thing we would recommend for a passage through the Red Sea is Morgan and Davies "Red Sea Pilot". It's probably old now, but the anchoring information will still be relevant. Peace and fair winds! Iโ€™ve heard On other sailing channels that some of them still have to deal with paying taxes through their home countries. So how does that work if there is no fix address? Because even being out there you need to have some form of income coming in and the local government of said country that you live in would always want their cut.

Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
At sea you're on your own, and have to put all those new skills you've learned into effect! If it all goes wrong there might be a coastguard boat which can assist. Offshore you can may day and be lifted off... Liz

"A sailboat is a lot of work".ย  So is living on a small farm with 2 barns, pastures, horses, weeds, a house, vehicles, a tractor, a mower (all of which need to be maintained), housework and cleaning,ย and keeping aย fulltime job - while saving money and trying to learn how to sail so you can tell "The Man" to piss off in a few years.ย  A boat takes work - until you think about all the crap we have to do just to maintain a job and a household.ย ย A Jabsco rebuild on a sexy ketch a few times a year seems like a good trade for a 9-5ย job.ย  :-)

Do u ever get cabin fever, and how do u deal with it ??
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
No, not really. Occasionally the boat can feel a bit small when there are tools everywhere (like now!) but most of the time we feel at our free-est on board. Marinas are shitty to be in, and being stuck in a dull anchorage can get wearing, but we get away as soon as we can. We'll usually take the dinghy ashore, which allows a little time away from the boat. Liz

For months, I was weighting the pros and cons of owning a sailboat, then, I read this quote, and...I bought a boat.

A father to his son : "I could give you many reasons why not to buy a boat but they would be pretty much the same reasons not to have a child. And you're my greatest joy."

This could be a good quote to end your (spot on) video, btw..:D

Words to live by... Now while I didn't share your reasons not to buy a boat with my spouse, I will indeed share this one with her!
All good reasons. Also, it can be cheaper to live aboard than to live ashore. And the people, the cruisers you meet are pretty cool people. Just don't buy a boat and sit it in a marina and forget about it. Use it. Boats can be holes in the water you throw money into, and leaving a cruising boat sit around for months or years at a time will be just that. Buy it and use it.

Wonderful video guys. As usual you got all the big things spot on. I loved that your first comment was about food. In my 70 years I've sailed 220,000 miles, been to 96 different countries (not all by boat), sailed out of one marriage and, literally, into another, fathered 3 great kids (and now am blessed with the great joy of 6 grand children), truly enjoyed a long and satisfying career and remember the first tastes of new and exciting food from all my ports of call. From Boothbay Harbor in Maine, US where I learned boats and sailing at my grandfather's knee and ate my grandmother's clam chowder like mother's milk to my recent return to Cuba, where we used to sail to in the '50s and happily can visit once again, and food I remember from my childhood, it's amazing how evocative food is in stirring old memories. I'm sure you will find great joy in Japanese cuisine which varies profoundly from it's southern semi-tropical flavors to the Szechuan like heat of Hokkaido's cuisine. Happy sailing and adventurous eating.

Well done!!! I agree with you.I really like your style of putting such an issue. Syntetic, clear and understable (as the other blog, 5 reasons why not to buy). On this matter i wish to have your advice. I was born in Venice 64 years ago, my eyes and my mind were always facing the sea. Space, sense of freedom, travelling, looking for unknow and remote places on this planet and imagination, dreams and so on. So i started to sail around from the age of 15. From many years i own a ferrocemento kech (Endurance 37). I decided to sell her for many different reasons. She is a fantastic blue water boat but i am getting old and she requires a lot of agility and fhysical work. Actually i am looking for another boat and after a long search on internet i found two types that i consider suitable for me (consider that most of the time i am a solo sailor) not more then 12m. lengh. One is a Westerly OceanRanger 38/39 ft. and the other one is a Sweden Yacht 38 ft. Please when you have time just give me your opinion. Thanks a lot. P.S: the t shirts of Esper are very nice! how to buy it and what is the cost each one. Fair wind el venesian

Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
Hey Riccardo. Both Westerlies and Swedens are solid boats. If I had to make a choice I'd go with a Sweden on paper, but the reality is there are many factors to consider. I can't help you on that because I haven't seen either boat so you'd need to sit down and thrash out the pros and cons of each. By that I mean the condition of each yacht. T-shirts are available in our shop! http://www.followtheboat.com/shop Fair winds to you and good luck with your purchase. Let us know how you get on!

50. comment for 5 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD BUY A BOAT! Sailing Followtheboat Q&A 25

Ron Hunter
Ron Hunter - 6 years ago
Yes, I cannot wait. I have been giving it alot of thought. Not only the boat but what I can physically do, the very strong possibility of needing permanent crew, and how I will deal with it. Until I got hurt, I lived the life of what alot would consider a loner. I lived alone, and alot of my work was alone. I either was on a crew or ran a crew but almost always I was the guy out working alone. I liked it that way. But, that is no more. I'm going to have to find someone to take me out open water sailing to see just how limited I really am. Then as Liz told me, go find a Nordhavn Motorsailer. It's funny, I was already looking real hard at them. It's looking like I will be able too look seriously and purchase my new to me boat by middle of summer. Hopefully my boat of choice is still for sale then. Thank you for all you do. Be safe!

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Itโ€™s a very insightful summary of the esoteric benefits of owning a boat. Again very well done!

If I may I will build on your thoughts by adding cruising is therapeutic. For the most part sailing in active conditions bombards the senses to the point it washes the stresses and concerns of the day out of your mind. With all of your senses, sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste, activated by the forces of Mother Nature and the motion of the ocean, there is little room for anything else, especially negative thoughts, to take residence in your mind. Now this may apply more to part time cruisers still holding on to the traditional daily grind and the baggage that goes with it, however may still apply to the long term travelers such as yourselves.

For many years I toured North America on motorcycles and felt the same therapeutic effect while riding the bendy bits of a mountain road as I do cruising around the gulf islands of British Columbia. Itโ€™s absolutely exhilarating.

We used to say you never see a motorcycle parked in front of a psychiatrist's office. I think the same could be said of sailors.

I'm no longer on active duty in the Navy (for almost 50 years now) but I know what you mean by being out on the open water. I feel it calling to me also and I am trying to answer the call, looking for "THE BOAT" is one of the hardest jobs I have ever done but a great pleasure at the same time.

Have to eat crow .. must say another good video. I was bit surprised by your first starting with learning skills. Heard this plenty before, but as first point was interesting and different. I have a question though. IF most sailors say they love ocean crossings the most, how come it seems like most do not do more than day at time hopping around so much? I know going around and seeing everything is also great and understand why so many do that as well. But my times in the navy, which seen very little port time, just learned to love being out on the open water. Something I miss greatly and look so forward to getting back to one day.

Just watched RNLI video of a friend being rescued after dismasting of coast of Ireland some time back ! He's still
sailing his 27ft Vega so it can't be all that bad can it ?

Actually he was coming back from the Azores and was 40 miles from Ireland when it happened ! After
the rescue he rigged a mast from two lengths of 4 "x 2 " that's 2" x 4 "wood for your American watchers, and sailed back to Scotland ! Big shout out to the RNLI they made it all possible.

At present I have three an Arden 4, Westerly 25 and Macwester Wight II ketch. The latter on a whim because I could,
our weather is enough to make you run away to the Carib, Med or sunnier climate. However our dreams must sometimes
remain exactly that, raising a family and the commitments of buying a home taking priority. Later on time and health
play their part in constricting your horizons, this doesn't mean your not having a life ! Enjoy what you have be it dinghy,
kayak, pair of binoculars, if we all had wishes come true would the oceans become cluttered I don't think so. As for
Follow the Boat it's an example of what can be if you make the right choices, so go ahead choose !

If you remember my previous comments, this video resonated again. Not interested in sail yachts, only motor. Your lifestyle is really what I desire. Apart from being land-lubbers (now), this is how we live. Clothes?, meh (my shorts have a big hole as we speak), product? meh, liquid soap and shampoo is it. Convention? Occasionally when we have to, however running a small business from home means we rarely have to do the corporate thing. We are the worst gays ever. Your videos more than any others are creating an itch that has to be scratched. If health and wealth persist, the clock is ticking. Thank you for that. Your vistas and appreciation of remote idylls are a pleasure to watch. Unfortunately a lot of the world is dangerous for us, so we will never see some of the places you have been, but we can live vicariously and see the rest ourselves.

First thing I would say is that you guys are cheating! You said "5 reasons to buy a boat" and there are like at least 6!!! Maybe even more!!! Now I know on wich side you are! Haha! But anyways, let see if I'm elligible to be a "liveaboard"... 1) New skills: I can do a lot by myself and even some electricity but I dont like diesel engines! Maybe one day Boats will have electrical engines... So I get 1/2 point there. 2) New language : No problemo there... English is not my first laguage and I learned some spanish with just a book. I can even talk with my hands and body... 1 full point there! 3) Nature : oh yes! I love little birds and just about everything! I have always thought that if we wanted to live on another planet, we would want to take all of the fauna and flora that we have down here on earth with us! Except maybe for the mosquitoes...O.o = 1 point. 3) Relationship : 32 years with the same woman... If she falls overboard, it will just be an awfull "accident"... bad joke... But if I fall, same thing... Ye, we both get a full point there! 4) Boats allow to be You : well... thats an easy one. Actually it is the reason why I got in so much troubles with JUST ABOUT ALL OF my bosses... 1 full point. 6) Boats set You free : yes, but Im allready free... 0 point! Total 4.5 points out of 6! I think Im doing pretty good! Now, I need a boat! It might take some times for different reasons, but yes, one day. In the mean time, here is one of my favorite quote : "Eternity is a very long time, especially towards the end." +1 for You.

Hmm again great things about living on a boat well just knowing if you dont like your neighbors you can just move...the other good thing its mine.....all mine. Well my wife might have something to say about that. When it rains there is no flooding i am in a boat. Everything comes with me and really its the most comfortable living situation going. I really could go on and on but i would say just have a crack dont buy a too big boat unless you have a plan for it learn as much as you can then learn it again and i can say teach your wife everything also because its an experience you can both enjoy and remember for the rest of your lives. P.s disclaimer no wives where kidnapped or forced to live on our boat...

I really liked this video. I would respectfully submit that if someone was talked out of boating by your other video, then they might not be compatible with your lifestyle. I've seen OCD type A people fail miserably because they couldn't stand the unstructured lifestyle. Oh, speaking of sayings, (I'm sure Jamie knows this one but maybe it's a new one for Liz). Do you know the difference between a sea story and a fairy tale? A fairy tale starts out with, "This happened a long long time ago". A sea story starts out with, " This is a no Shi**er..". Be safe. Can't wait to see you in the northern climes. And on a serious note, attributes to look for in a boat, what are your thoughts on looking for a boat that can be single handed by the smallest, least physically built person in the crew? I'd seen that in other publications but would appreciate your take on it.
Sailing followtheboat
Sailing followtheboat - 6 years ago
I think sailing can be both regimented and unstructured... but maybe that's just me! Not sure I completely understand your question... can you send me an email with more details? Happy to answer if I can.

Haha, and there is millions other reasons too! I like that the other one got a bit of controversy to it...
