Mentioned changing zincs to a guy in the yard last week.
He asked, "What's a zinc?"
I replied, "Anode."
Furrowed brow.
I explained, then listed all the zincs his centerboard auxiliary has, including the engine heat exchanger. Not an idiot, he just had no idea. Lucky he found out while still on the hard.

I second the penetrating oil. Aka engine lubricant in a spray. Wd40 evaporates quite quickly. It’s a good start, but need to be followed up with a penetrating oil. Since the prop is a write-off, you can use a grinder on it. The vibration will help loosen things up (the goal is not to cut it off, but to dislodge the corrosion).

That chain is cheap! About half-price for the same from a UK swindlery. Could you please post a link to the Italian supplier? Enjoying the daily videos -- cheers.

Great stuff you 3! Hey - that rhymes with its only 50 p lol

As far as your prop goes, to be positive, the current prop is amazingly secure :)

Did you try combining the puller, a hammer and reducing the friction?

very good,, not enough people state the prices of gear when they are fitting them,,, dont bother too much about toxic fumes whenn working out side , just keep your nose away from any fumes and the wind will do the rest,, or just grind the whole prop off..

Well done Chris!! Great video for sailors. Can't help unfortunately with any idea but I am curious about how you are going to solve the problem. Thanks for sharing!

You need to put marvels mystery oil or that atf mix in the cylinders days before you start her to preserve the pistons and rings as she hasnt been used for so long

Your video is ‘strangely’ compelling for all manner of reasons, not least for its honesty. A sort of confessional on the calamities of life aboard Britaly. Thanks for sharing.

I am just wondering - why galvanized instead of stainless chain? Thanks for making this video in your crazy day :)
Jeffrey Wood
Jeffrey Wood - 6 years ago
Thank you...Everyone I know uses stainless but this makes a lot of sense :)
Robin Rouwen
Robin Rouwen - 6 years ago
Stainless is more expensive, less strong with specific abrupt breaking/snapping point. Therefor heavier at same strenght. These negatives mean that galvanised steel is the lighter, stronger and cheaper option. Even if you consider the slightly more corrosion issue.

Jeffrey Wood that's a great point. It must rub off eventually, right? Let me know what you find out in your search of galvanized vs stainless : ] cheers mate
Jeffrey Wood
Jeffrey Wood - 6 years ago
Good point...my question is actually quite specific, given the amount of abrasion a chain receives won't the galvanizing come off or is it a safe alternative given the average life of anchor chain?

Jeffrey Wood - I remember Bernard Moitessier talking about his preference of galvanized over stainless. Even using galvanized cable for his standing rigging. It's quite a proven material.

Use a 50/50 mix of Acetone and ATF fluid. To remove the prop, oh ATF is automatic transmission fluid. Let it sit overnight, and make sure that it doesn't get on anything else, period. Better than a torch.

Just removed a stubborn prop this weekend, try penetrating oil like PB Blaster, heat the hub up with a small torch after wiping off the penetrating oil as it is flammable and then crank the puller as tight as you can and hit the end of the puller or the hub, mine finally shot off once the bond was broken. As noted earlier make sure to lap the new prop onto the shaft taper to ensure maximum contact.

Penetrating oil might help you remove that prop. Spray enough on both sides over a couple of days to give it time to soak in, and then tap around it. Just don't use a blow torch with the penetrating oil because the fumes are toxic. Good luck!
Jeffrey Wood
Jeffrey Wood - 6 years ago
He is spraying it with WD40 (penetrating oil), maybe he soak it more?...good tip on the blow torch though, I did know that -and it would be my next step in his shoes. Thank you.

What Mark said. Make sure you get it really hot and then quench it with cold water.
Mark Bernier
Mark Bernier - 6 years ago
Don't know what you mean by a blow torch, but an oxy-propane or oxy-acetylene torch should do the trick. You have to cycle the heat a number of times and as the prop is junk hit it with cold each cycle to break the corrosion. Also, tension up the puller and then judiciously belt the centre pin, again providing shock loads. Once it is off, you will probably have to lap a new prop onto the taper. Make sure it is not cheaper to just scrap the prop shaft and bearings rather than do all the work disassembling corroded stuff. Lapping takes time and may not be possible on that sort of drive. On a big outboard, prop shaft replaced for certain.
