Yeah the green light on your compass is a marker you placed pressing r with compass up should delete. Its purpose is to quickly get your bearings in the direction you wanted

The glowing green/red is an azimuth that you accidentally locked onto by pressing the Middle Mouse Button. Press 'R' while holding up compass to erase it.
