A great informative video- Thanks Patrick, Have Subscribed. Some really great work and ideas there, your boat looks amazing. Hanging out for your next video- I’m waiting to hear what you did with your Aluminium tanks as we are facing a similar problem with old water tanks!

Hi Patrick
Nice job adding detail improvements to your V40. Especially the titanium chainplates. I'm quite familiar with the design--- actually owned a yacht building business that occupied the factory where your boat was built and employed several old boys that worked for Valiant back in that era.

Three suggestions:
1- The hinges and particularly the hasp that closes the cockpit locker are mickey mouse. Should you ever seriously have the spreaders in the water it is likely that it will be ripped off--- and then you will have a serious flooding problem.
2- Since you've converted the fo'c'sle into a storage space, it's time to move the windlass and chain locker back where it really belongs--- alongside the fwd bulkhead of the head.
3- Throw away the CQR. It always was nearly useless, so why use it to weight down the bow? If you want a second anchor get a 75# Spade or Mantus that not only works but can be broken down for storage.
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 5 years ago
1- Correct. I did change the hasps to something a little more robust. The structure the hinges are attached to is not that robust anyway. 2- At a marina in Reunion island, in the Indian Ocean, I saw a boat with the windlass mounted just forward of the mast. The owner was never around so I could not explore just where or how the chain was stored below. The run from the bow roller to the windlass was padded for the chain to drag over. It all made perfect sense and I can't understand why no production boat manufacturer has incorporated a similar design. The snag on a Valiant-40 is the inner forestay is in the way and so is the forward hatch. It needs ro be thought out in the design process, well before the boat is built. 3- Without getting a larger boat, we have no place to store an anchor down below. Twice in 12 years we hurriedly deployed two anchors and one stored down below would have been the same as not having it at all. I would like to dump the CQR over the side but there is a good chance we will one day be in the area of
Tierra Del Fuego and just might need a second anchor, even a CQR. After
that, freedom from that otherwise dead weight. Thanks for your knowledgeable comment.

I'm a little nervous about the crowded bilge. When all hell breaks loose, that bilge will fill up with wet paper scraps and everything else that you can think of... blocking pump....not sure how you can make it a better set up.

Patrick, i am new to your channel, and noticed your stern had Middletown on it and was wondering if that was in Rhode Island, and sure enough with a little google search, i see you are from my home town! I grew up there and lived on Walcott Ave on Eastons point pretty close to Second beach! Really enjoy your channel, and am planning to do a lot of sailing in the future. I used to sail J24s out of ida lewis.

Patrick Childress Sailing - 5 years ago
Hi Michael, I lived on Aquid. Is. for about 20 years. I know Walcott Ave. pretty well and ,for a few years, lived on S. Crest St.. Rather than J24s, Rebecca and I did the 22s at Ft Adams. Lots of fun times in Newport. Don,t know if we will ever get back as we keep hearing of new areas of the world to explore, like here in Tanzania, on the east coast of Africa. Keep at it as there are a lot of great sailing opportunities in the Npt. area to prep for crossing oceans.

Great tour. I’m 100% with you on bilge pumps. I like that Edson pump and will get one of those. The high capacity electric pump is also a great feature I will install the same. I’ve decided to instal an interior end to end sea water supply line to cut down on the number of through hull fittings. I can reduce 4 to one and improve its function with better filtering and monitoring. I love the gangway grate. I thought that through for a boat I was designing, but having bought a boat instead...thanks for the reminder... will instal one in the new boat. Your use of PVC and PE sheet as a build material is spot on too.

+Patrick Childress Sailing I have my eye on a classic MCGRUER 31ft 7.5 tonne full keel skeg or a Bermudan sloop 28" (I read it is forgiving) It will be my first boat and with very little experience I plan to live aboard full time within a year of purchase. Im willing to fly across the globe for a bigger cheaper boat.

Very true, one needs to be keep issues of privacy close to heart.
Youtube like any advertisement system only can work with information, hence present them with the logic of things, in careful chosen words , as now your video shows the adverts of Grammarly....in the form of a video... So..I click and you should see that in your monetization
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 5 years ago
Yes... a little disconerting inviting a few thousand eyes in to your home. But as Patrick used to say about writing, and now says about his videography...anything for a good story :) - Rebecca. We are still learning the monetization thing bjt it seems like Youtube has more control then we do ;)

+Patrick Childress Sailing To click the adverts brings an higher award to the video channel. I have seen only a banner on this video not a starting video or other. The default setting of the upload one need choose the right options , also the tags , and references to product in the video blurb to attract high-end advertisers , and yes obvious have the viewer watch the whole video is the most important part, so the catch of a secret at the end of the vid keeps me sitting watching.. anyhow, this video was great.. loving it

Thanks! In the intro we should say "Please help out and let the comercial run all the way through." It has been taking 2-3 hours to produce each minute of video. I finally clicked the monitize button to make whatever beer pittance You Tube pays.

What about a vented loop on your bilge pump? Also, what about more Lily in your video? Thanks
Alan Sugarman
Alan Sugarman - 5 years ago
I replaced by bilge pump which had been mounted high in cockpit locker with a submersible bilge pump, but forgot to install either a check valve or an anti-siphon loop - one not being needed with the prior set-up. I then had siphoning into the bilge when my stern sank lower when under power. First I put in a check valve - but am replacing with an anti-siphon. I am not a fan of check valve since they can become clogged. Also, Rule uses 1 1/8 hose and fitting are not hard to find. I jury rigged a Whale 1 1/4 using tape and shrink wrap, but, hose clamps did not hold. So, found a 1 1/4 anti-siphon and purchased it and then afterwards located a 1 1/4 check valve. Am going to just use the anti-siphon. Looking forward to seeing Lily.
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 5 years ago
A vented loop would be a very desireable thing to have, but in my special situation, with the check valve on the hand pump, the vent is not needed. Both Lily and Rebecca make special appearances in the next video.

South Jersey, Great story of survival. Just like our old Furuno, GPS is still there and working, there is no reason to remove such a good piece of back up equipment like the SSB.

While not as useful as they once were, I've been in 2 serious situations where the sat phone wouldn't get a signal and one of those times could've been life or death when we hit submerged sea can and holed the boat. Had we not reached someone we'd have been in the raft counting on the Eprb in the North Atlantic. Thankfully we reached a Russian Naval vessel via SSB and they had a pump that saved our ass and boat. They where going to Boston of all places and stayed with us long enough to stabilize the boat and make sure we'd make it to port. Needless to say I was damn glad I kept our SSB. Funny thing was when we went to return the pump (I don't think they expected us too) the ship was tied up near the USS Constitution and security was pretty tight. But they let us through with the pump and 10 cases of Jack Daniels,15 cartons of Marlboro ciggs and about 300 boxes of Tastycakes courtesy of the boats owner. I thought it was a cheap price to pay for saving our butts although the owner wasn't too pleased when he realized it all went on his credit card lol. But I would've paid it if need be because it was worth it to get invited on a Russian Frigate docked in US waters.

No it is really goingb the way of the cassette stereo and Radio Direction Finder. Satellite coms like Iridium Go are replacing SSB.

Just wondering if you’d consider talking about (since you were a delivery capt) what a potential cruiser should buy/look for. I love Robert Perry’s Bw cruisers....but age...so many variables. I debate with my brother about “deals” that have been sitting for years vs paying a little more for a boat that’s had a recent refit. I know the debates are endless but any insight in future videos would be invaluable. Btw, not talking unlimited funds but in the $50k to $100k range...or what you think is reasonable for a bluewater cruiser...before spare parts, etc. One more??? Excluding your beautiful boat, what would be your next boat? Sorry for taking his time Rebecca :)

+James Outerbridge james, i am using a tiny tablet keys with a poker stick while far inland in Tanzania. Thanks for questioning the braided one.

James Outerbridge - 5 years ago
+Patrick Childress Sailing Sorry about that Patrick, looks like i confused that braided clear hose line as the bilge line, just a thought perhaps some hose and valve labeling to add to an upcoming video as a safety feature thing, like you say its always the obvious things we all miss. Safe travels In Tanzania. best Jim.
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 5 years ago
Jim, Hopefully others will read this and understand that Rebecca ani are deep inland in Tanzania on safari for a couple weeks so will be lax responding to comments. I have to poke this tiny keyboard with a jabber to type. Jim, you had me worried as there can always be something that which is obvious, could be missed! The main electric bilge discharge is not shown. The white discharge hose is the hand pump discharge and because of the poor lighting and shutter blurr , the hose clamp on the discharge thruhull is hard to see. But I probably should have pointed out that that is the hose which used to come straight out then down to the hand pump. Thanks for getting my heart rate up without exercise!
