Thanks, Clay. Finally....., Rebecca has come around. In the interior vid to go up not this Friday, but two weeks after that,  she will show the electronics, many of which she installed, at the nav. station. More than a cameo, but it is a start. Hopefully I can get her to do the outro for the same vid. We will be away into central Tanzania for a while so these vids will be set to auto release.

Did you have to get a special permit for Chagos?
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 1 year ago
Yes, it is not like the old days. The permit can be obtained on line through BIOT, British Indian Ocean Territory. It cost $75 per week for a maximum of 28 days. Also, a yacht must have wreck removal insurance. We have been to so many atolls in the Pacific that the only reason we stopped in Chagos was because it was on my bucket list, like Bikini atoll, Galapagos Is., Rodrigues island, Reunion etc . Otherwise, there is nothing special about Chagos.

6000 miles with no wzter maker, seriously how did you do that?
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 1 year ago
Frodo, Fortunately I was able to sail around the world starting out in 1979, long before RO water makers and chart plotters were thought of. Certainly, sailing is a lot easier these days. We get water from clear streams, clear wells, catch rain, from water faucets ashore. A speck of chlorine does a lot of good. Watch my video "Water, What's In It" and you will see how I test water. I have found city water can be cleaner than the water from many RO systems on sailboats. But be sure to add chlorine to any city water in Thailand.....City water in Malaysia is good. Rain water always needs a little chlorine to keep the airborne mildew and bacteria from growing.

Just wondering if you have internet on your boat? Here in the Philippines I use Windy TV for plotting wind, rain and such with google earth as back up, works great for predicting Typhoons and such, that said love your channel, just found it...thank God you dont babble like many on the sailing channels...BTW I love your out of the box thinking...

We have internet only when we are near shore and cell towers. At sea, we get weather updates on our Predict Wind over Iridium Go satellites. Iridium Go is not faster than the Single Side Band and Pactor 3 modem but far more reliable. I really like the Predict Wind for the out in the middle of nowhere ocean current information. I don't know where else to get that information. Thanks for the positive comment.

Marsello! Great to hear from you. I cannot count the number of times I have told officials in other countries how hard the Board of Tourism in Sangihe and Indonesia, work to make the place desirable for tourists, suggesting they should do the same! Certainly Sangihe is one of our favorites. Thanks for watching the video. This is something new to do which is proving to be fun work. Surprisingly, there are cell towers along this stretch of the desolate Sri Lanka coast so we don't exactly know when our link to civilization will be cut...certainly today sometime. Hope to see you again! Thanks if you can click on the "Subscribe" button.

Have a great passage. What is "better than Gribs"?
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 2 years ago
Hi DIYSailboatGuy and Nick, ,
Thanks DIY for the good comment about what is better than a GRIB. In my haste to get out the video before sailing away from Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, I did not do well explaining what I meant by having something better than a GRIB. Nick did see my thoughts and expressed them well. After uploading the video, I kicked myself for not pointing out the Iridium GO! box which is the square, black, box on the wall just below the Vespermarine AIS and to the right of the Raymarine chart plotter. Because of that satellite connection, which works 24 hours a day, in any weather condition, anywhere in the world, we no longer need the Pactor 3 modem. The Pactor is now as antiquated as a cassette player or a sextant. Here in the Indian Ocean, there are no Sailmail stations, unless I am missing something, there is only one in Bruni, way east on the island of Borneo, and one in South Africa, making for very tenuous connections, if at all. It is surprising how many yachts out here have PredictWind and Iridium Go! Those stuck with only SSB and the Pactor are always asking those with the newer electronics for weather updates. Of course we do share. The only use out here for SSB is for talking to the other cruisers at “net time”.
It took 15 days to get to Chagos, where we spent nearly a month. It took another 8 days to get to Rodrigues….so we have been out in the boonies, away from the internet, for a while. The internet in Rodrigues is incredibly slow but I will try to upload a new video late tonight when the internet might be a little faster. That will be video #14. In video #15, there is something more about our passage to Chagos and getting ocean current information through PredictWind. Having that information proved to be equally as valuable as weather information. In the region of the equator, the currents were very strong and difficult to deal with as they were flowing to the east, we needed to sail south west. Having updated flow information, we were able to play the currents south of the equator and grab some helping currents to get us to Chagos. Again, on the passage to Rodrigues, updated current information was invaluable to play a large rotation and set us up into helping currents. If you have ever sailed between Rhode Island and Bermuda, you will know how valuable up to the minute current flow information is.

Sure you can get free weather, that a government has paid to produce. We have what we think is the best mix and in an easy to use way. We have a free service which includes the ECMWF, you just get more features in our paid versions. I would be interested to know where you get ECMWF gribs for free?
SailingKayode
SailingKayode - 2 years ago
Nick Olson Disclosure is important. Ask Sean Hannity. You have nice software but free sources of Gribs are available. If you look at the historical weather for the route from Sri Lanka to Chagos you will see the bad stuff never happened according to ECMWF or GFS and nothing bad in the near future. I get ECMWF for free.
Nick Olson
Nick Olson - 2 years ago
I work for PredictWind so can correct you on a few things about PredictWind. The only free weather model we redistribute is the GFS. We run full global models for our proprietary PWG and PWE models every 12 hours (this costs money to do) and pay a lot of money for the rights to distribute the ECMWF in our software. I guess indirectly you are paying for free data with your $250 a year sailmail subscription which floats saildocs.
SailingKayode
SailingKayode - 2 years ago
Nick Olson You can get Gribs by Sailmail request from the following sources.
US National Weather Service (NWS) – a part of NOAA,
US Navy
Canadian Met Service
Météo France

I agree that PW packages it all nicely but they do not provide any enhanced forecasting ability. They are resellers of free data in a nice interface.
Nick Olson
Nick Olson - 2 years ago
Grib is just a data format. I believe the reference was in relation to getting a weather fax which only shows the GFS model. What is better is being able to get 4 models in grib format via PW and the Iridium Go. In the video the GFS did not show the system developing near Chagos, but the other models did, hence having more than one model to reference.
SailingKayode
SailingKayode - 2 years ago
Nick Olson Isn't PredictWind just a fancy way of displaying Gribs? They don't have forecasters on staff optimizing any forecasts. The routing feature is great but Gribs are Gribs.
Nick Olson
Nick Olson - 2 years ago
I believe the comment was in relation to using PredictWind Offshore and having access to gribs from 4 models and using the weather routing function. I believe they will be out of contact for 4-6 weeks. cheers.
