CRUISE SHIP CAUGHT IN A BOMB CYCLONE (Norwegian Breakaway)

The New Year's Cruise carrying over 4,000 passengers was caught in a violent winter storm on the way back from the Bahamas. The ship was constantly rocking for 3 days! Although the ship is capable of handling such a storm, we saw some people sleeping in the hallways because of water leaking into their rooms from the balcony doors (or because some thought the ship was going to capsize.) We even saw a family walking around with their life jackets. UPDATE: For those who are interested in knowing what NCL is doing for compensation:

Thank you for choosing Norwegian Breakaway for your vacation at sea. We appreciate your patience as we reviewed the feedback from the voyage.

We sincerely apologize for the discomfort and inconvenience you may have experienced as a result of the effects of winter storm Grayson. The safety and security of our guests and crew is our top priority, and we are sorry that the enjoyment of your last few days onboard may have been affected.

Your patronage is very important to us and we understand that your experience during this cruise may have fallen short of your expectations. As a genuine indication of our concern and as a gesture of goodwill for your understanding, we have arranged for a future cruise credit of 25% of your cruise fare paid. This credit may be used on a future sailing, so that you can return to have the cruise vacation experience that you originally intended. Please contact your travel professional or our Reservation Department at 1-800-327-7030, and refer to your original reservation number at the time of booking.

Please note that this cruise credit is non-transferable, has no cash value and is valid for sailings within 12 months from the date of this letter. It cannot be applied to government taxes and fees, airfare, insurance, hotel packages or other add-ons. It is not combinable with other cruise credits or fare reduction coupons.

We do hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back in the near future.

So this will only benefit those whom can afford to go on cruises and not those whom saved for a once in a lifetime trip. Would be fairer to give nothing or return some of the cost already paid.

Yeah, I'm 50/50 about this.....it's true that it's not the cruise line's fault that a storm came! Just be happy all y'alls asses came back home safe and sound!! This is what happens when dummies book New Year's cruises! There's no guarantees of sunny skies in the caribbean, so this is a chance you take! BUT....i do feel that a 50% credit would've been more suffice to ensure loyal patronage, as we all know this is how you survive the cruise line wars! My favorite will ALWAYS be Carnival Cruise Lines, even with their recent episodes, I always enjoy myself with them.

You built a crappy ship. It leaks. People couldn't sleep in their own flooded staterooms. A 100% refund and a free cruise is all that would suffice You built a crappy ship that leaks and floods out public and staterooms. Seriously? Where's SOLAS? Where's pride in creating a sturdy, beautiful ship? Ever since you've unceremoniously dumped the classic Norway/France, you've been under a curse.

You may be that DENSE but RedCurtainEnt sure as hell aren't and know this and that's why it was offered!! They're losing DIDDLY because I'll bet any money not even 25 % of the 4000 passengers will take them up on it. So shove your greedy people comment up you ass where it belongs as that's where your fucking brain is too! smdh!! Just can't fix stupid!

BFD. So a ship hit some weather in the middle of winter and people are upset. My gosh somebody might have actually..........Puked!! You would have thought they sailed into Halsey’s Typhoon by the amount of bitching and crying. That ship was never in any kind of danger. Stay at home next time if your so damn scared.

That seems a bit overboard for this particular issue. While weather is of course out of their hands, if your flight is grounded do to weather, or the amusement park is closed due to emergency, they don't just keep your money and say you're out of luck. People shell out a ton of cash for these trips, it's not out of the question if the trip is a no go that they get something for the issue other than "spend more money with us in less than 12 months and maybe we'll give you a break." People sometimes save for years for these cruises. That said, we also do not know how much of the trip was ruined. This could have been on the last day, or one day into it. I would be nice though for a company that's all about the customer experience to show a little compassion. But that's my opinion of course.

You say to "please research before making a statement" but how much research have you done to find out why NCL chose to proceed the way they did? As dumb as it may seem to those onboard I would think it would be highly doubtful that it was not an educated decision even if some do not agree with the outcome.OPC Statement:"In the end, the storm’s minimum central pressure plunged by a whopping 59 millibars in 24 hours, making it one of the fastest-intensifying storms ever observed off the East Coast. Such a rapid drop in pressure caused air to rush inward toward the center, as if filling a growing void in the atmosphere. This resulted in powerful winds measured at 80 miles per hour over land. Waves as high as 51 feet were observed in Nova Scotia, though the waves that affected the Norwegian Breakaway were likely far lower in height, closer to 15 to 30 feet. "     I was on the Norwegian Getaway in April this year and the Norwegian Escape April last year (They are exact same ship as Breakaway) and both times we ran in to a storm which had 15-20' waves and going directly into the wave on a ship this size there was very little movement on either ship. The issue they encountered was obviously the waves coming every direction because of the cyclone.      In NCL's response to why they decided to take that route they stated they left Great Stirrup Cay early to attempt to beat the storm, they knew there would be 15-30' waves which is a little rough but not a big deal but the cyclone was "one of the fastest intensifying storms ever observed off the East Coast" so it is true that with all the weather instruments available there would be no possible way they could have known ahead of time enough to reroute and change course.

Why would you go on a Smaller boat, those are decades old, cruddy, and outdated... Ive been on both smaller cruise ships and larger ships... I was on Anthem of the seas not too long ago and all the cool advanced technology and activities to do was well worth it! Not even that, larger ships are also usually the same price as smaller ships, if not cheaper.

I had just been on a cruise to Jamaica on NCL EPIC and then saw this. My brother has taken severAl cruises with them and this was my 2nd. He said he's done with them and I know I will never do a spa package again. It's nothing more than a fancy used car sales lot. Any service done comes with.the pressure to buy their stuff. I asked the beautician Brittney for a root touch up to my light Brown hair and got super blonde with most of it falling out. She did not listen and did what she wanted, then sells me the cheap to fix it!!! It's my fault for having hair done on a cruise but she dis not know what she was doing so just a word of warning for any other seafarers! Plus that particular ship holds 4100 people which meant massive lines and crowding everywhere. NCL ... stick to smaller ships. You would get 1 star from me if ratings were available.

You cannot help the weather, especially when cruising in the winter! The ship took a serious battering but held up and kept everyone safe even with the discomfort that was inevitable from that level of storm. An offer of 25% off a future booking is a lovely gesture, and in no way necessary as the cruise company where in no way at fault. A real nice good will gesture in my opinion

Cruise ships change plans, divert or skip a destination or two to avoid dangerous waters. Weather forecasts are almost very accurate due to technology. We ended up in the Cayman Islands instead of the Bahamas in October of 2016 due to a big one, (on our way to Colombia & Panama). I am guessing the company saved fuel by taking a shorter route, the rerouting was appreciated and no one complained about missing the Bahamas. No one expected a refund or discounts on future cruises. I bet NCL made the offer & gesture to keep the greedy lawyers away, more than anything else.

and then if they would have docked somewhere and you got home a day or two late you would still be crying and looking for compensation. These companies can't win... and you wonder why the price keeps going up and up for everyone else. For the people that had water in their room, compensate them. For everyone else, you lost the luck game, sorry. No matter where you go on vacation you are in mother nature's hands when it comes to weather. You happened to lose this time around.

Anthony Parker I 100% agree with everything Anthony Parker said! He knows what he’s talking about because he was in the Navy. And people are so greedy asking for 100% refunds. I was on the cruise the week before this happened and if I had been stuck in the storm I would not expect any refund because you sign a paper saying that it’s not NCL’s fault if you run into weather problems! And cruises are cheep. If u wanted u could go on a cruise every month of the year in a basic room and probably even get upgraded to a nicer room if your a latitudes Member. I get it if you paid a lot for the room like if you were in the haven like I was but still it’s not at all the Cruise company’s fault for the weather, and to all the people who complained about NCL service on the boat if you ask me the service was pretty good for the price. Also what do you expect if you are going on a cruise leaving from New York in January! Hello Open Your Eyes!

Yes they have satellite,Doppler radar instruments that detect pressure changes in the atmosphere they just Ignored ALL THE WEATHER CHANGES BECAUSE THEY WOULD LOSE MONEY IN FUEL GOING AROUND EVERYONE KNOWS THIS!!! I HAVE SPOKEN WITH PAST EMPLOYEES WHO WERE AFRAID TO BE ON THAT SHIP BECAUSE OF HOW THEY OPERATED!!!!THIS SHIP NEEDS TO BE REMOVED FROM NEW YORK AND SENT BACK TO ITS HOME COUNTRY PERMANENTLY!!ITS A CONCORD DISASTER IN THE MAKING!
Anthony Parker
Anthony Parker - 6 years ago
yes they have all the technology for the weather but if they are on a particular course which is set out by the company and the weather was given as clear and trouble free and suddenly a storm appears on radar which does not give the captain much time to chart a new course (which can happen as i should know serving in the navy)then neither can the captain or company be held responsible for sailing into the storm as the captain would not have sailed into this storm also it depends on what strength was given of the approaching storm as in this case it looks like everyone concerned was caught out, the weather warning may have given out information for a small and weak storm front there are many factors to take into account about this but you cant blame or hold the cruise company ultimately responsible

yes they are responsible for the well being and safety of all its passengers during any kind of weather but they are responsible to keep their passengers satisfied whilst onboard during a storm as that's impossible as they have to priorities safety over everything else and if that means passengers dissatisfied so be it what would they rather have a company to safe guard their safety of keep them satisfied during storms they cant put on entertainment to keep the passengers satisfied or calm as they have to take safety in to account first
Anthony Parker
Anthony Parker - 6 years ago
why should it be more as the ship or its company aren't responsible for the weather people who are saying that the 25% is inadequate are you actually trying to say the company arranged the storm and should therefore offer more i agree more should be given to only those who had to sleep in the corridors because of leaking rooms from the windows/portholes i would assume as they are nearer to the ocean and the fact they offered every passenger 25% was quite generous on their part but they could have done it a bit different by offering those worse affected i.e leaking cabins more than the 25% and those who only suffered from the continuous swaying movement of the ship the 25% then there wouldn't be all this moaning my opinion

Isn't this ship now named the "Pacific Dawn"? It was also completely refurbished not too long ago, maybe due to the damage the cyclone caused. Does anyone know if the Pacific Dawn used to be called the Norwegian Breakaway?

People seem amused by this, and, I suppose, if they have no fear I'm happy for them. But as the Costa Concordia almost proved the day is going to come when four or five thousand people are not going to come back from what will be unquestionably the "cruise of a lifetime."
I hope it doesn't happen, of course. But the fact is, had the Costa not been pushed by the wind (or, was it the hand of God), it would have done the "Poiesidan."

In Australia we clipped the edge of a cyclone and it ended up exactly like this, water everywhere and wind whistling, the best part was that they still let me ride the Segways in 50 kmh winds, and my god that was fun, you just have to live with no brakes and an immense tailwind

What was the captain thinking, leaving a safe port to sail into the teeth of a strong Nor'easter to meet a destination time! (airlines with hotel layovers can be comparatively economically rescheduled)

There was a freighter that sailed into a Bahamas hurricane a few years back where the ship and crew were lost That captain was ordered to sail by very obvious landlubbers in the office.

If the captains right of refusal to sail into jeopardy of: ship, crew & passengers has been over-ridden for monetary reason, someone needs to awaken Lloyd's of London to the fact before we loose the big one.

WAKE UP CAPTAINS AND DO, AND STAND BY YOUR RIGHT, TO DO YOUR JOB, WHICH IS TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC FROM MARITIME MISHAP!

The food service seemed to be unaffected during the storm. It was actually fascinating watching some waiters in the restaurant impressively carrying a stack of plates with one hand while the ship was shaking and leaning to one side. I have to say, the crew did a wonderful job trying to keep everyone happy.

Being on the ocean during a storm wouldn't be the bad part. Being on a cruise ship with idiot passengers would be hell on earth dealing with them puking and carrying on like they just went through something scary and catastrophic, when it really wasn't.

The cruise line should not have to compensate people for weather that is out of their control. It's nature. It's not something the cruise did wrong. If anything, passengers should be grateful to the ship's crew especially the captain for keeping them safe in that because that looks not only terrifying but life threatening as well.
HotelMikeBravo

PaulyG Speaks No one, no modern instruments can accurately predict weather. They can estimate what would be the weather. Weather patterns are always changing. It is not static. A low pressure area may form without warning, evolving into a storm.
Ted yellowstone
Ted yellowstone - 6 years ago
You're comment is uneducated and completely retarded. Neither you or your "friend" have any idea how a ship or weather works. The ship was in NO danger and that storm exploded in the Atlantic and they didn't have any "warning" that was going to happen. Welcome to the Atlantic in January. Calling the captain stupid is such a lazy comment from someone with no maritime experience. Thank god you and your "friend" are such experts!
PaulyG Speaks
PaulyG Speaks - 6 years ago
Kamila J Lol they shouldn’t have been cruising in that weather in the first place. They knew there was a storm in the way, just underestimated how brutal it would have been. My buddy worked in a cruise ship for 8 years and when I showed him this he said the Captain was stupid for cruising into this. I would have demanded a refund as well. There are practices and tons of technology put in place to avoid these nightmarish incidents.

While I empathize with the passengers and their perception of the ordeal. I do think that 25% overall compensation (and possibly more to those who had greater affect) is reasonable. This is a ship going through the ocean during winter weathers this is to be expected as it is part of the calculus. Those looking to profit off this ordeal make it quite mor expensive for future cruisers. At the end of the day the cost will be passed on to further cruisers. Also the contracts will become alt more stringent as to forecast these possible claims.

I see people claiming medical disabilities and disorders from a less than 24 hour event. (Time of ship going through the storm).

For a 7 day cruise and Only 1 day ruined and all got home safely. Some of the complaints are outrageous.

Then why else would they go into a storm they want to stay on time to pick up the next group. To keep the money coming if it wasn't about the money then why would you risk it knowing the storm was coming. You made no sense with your response. They out the ship and all lives abroad in danger instead of staying in port where it was safe. So if its not about money then what was the sense of going out
?

One can easily understand the overturned deck chairs & damaged goods/furniture, but there was no reason for the ship to leak as much as it did. The Breakaway is quite a new cruise ship, and there is no reason for the ship to be leaking water the way it did. Poor construction. That’s it. There have been a multitude of other cruise ships that have gone through similar to worse storms and none of them leaked water to nearly that degree. Poor construction on an almost brand new vessel. Disappointing Norwegian

WOW so where do the staff wipe the water to? Even it's a big storm AMAZING that ships of that size hare leaking from the TOP of all places. Makes one really hesitate to go on a cruise! AS designer I would imagine that decorative railings in the center of the larger hallways would be helpful. So much for "sliding" doors. Why not have extra door outside with hermetic closing? It's all about weight I guess. But still the cost of the water leaks compared to extra hermetic doors must be minimal.

This Norwegian cruise vessel should be decommissioned and the staff fired. Its unbelievable how poor made was this vessel, water leaking from sealing due to water infiltration. Surely they'll blame the weather and the ocean, not considering the fact that they operate in harsh water conditions. Next time choose a vessel constructed by Damen Shipyards...

To me, that was a little storm.. Having spent many days at sea in the US Navy on destroyers, a MUCH smaller ship, I can tell you what this ship endured was nothing but a rain shower and light seas in comparison to the North Atlantic. Stop it with the fake news term "bomb cyclone". You leave in the winter from NEW YORK, you deserve what you get. God, more fake weather tards. You people crack me up. BTW, did you bother to read the disclaimer and other little tidbits in your travel contract? No, you didn't. Thinking the ship was going to sink? LOLOLOLOL. I've been in some fun storms on these ships. We taped beer cups to the floor and let the ships motion determine how many drinks we took when the ball wobbled to the cup. Be careful. You have to anticipate the rolling of the ship so you don't hit the 3 cup. We had a blast, unlike the pussies on this ship that were looking to cash in for their mental impairments.

My family and me were on the Norwegian Gem from jan 3 to jan 13, departure from NYC, so we were in the same storm at the same moment. (we were heading for the Carribean). We saw on the ship's channel that the path of the ship have been deviate, we understood a little later that it was probably to avoid the worst of this storm. We had high waves of 27 feets high for almost 30 hours, winds blowing at 142 km/h (a little more than 88 miles/h)... so it was a cyclone category 1 if we look on the Saffir-Simpson scail. We didn't had those flood, but it was little paper bag festival.

It’s funny becaus the people paid $1,000 or so for a balcony, that’s why I like the window that’s are literally eye level with the water, and the cruises during hurricane season are the best because of the rocking. The swaying of the ship make me not regret paying for the cruise.

And still people want to risk their lives paying for a cruise on a passenger liner. I went on a princess cruise once, 20 some years ago. And the swells were over 10ft. Rocking side to side.Leaks as these people are witnessing, NEVER again. No matter how safe they claim they are, take it with a grain of salt.. Bad maintenance , They forge safety check paperwork.. I know a few safety check workers for some cruise lines. If they don't follow the rules set by the company. They risk being fired. They don't ever do a full safety check. Only what is necessary to pass an inspection. There never is a wet test performed for leaks. Where they have company fire fighting tugs that spray the top of the ship to search for leaks.. Now with this video proves my friends correct in that aspect.. Never trust any passenger cruise lines. I have to question the captain's ability. With the technology we have today. They know when bad weather is close. And there are warning signs that alert when the pattern changed. He or she took a chance and place all 4000 peoples lives at risk. I wonder out of all that witnessed the leaks everywhere, that, that water runs down to the bow of the hull. And from the video. That's a lot of leaks. Sometimes it takes storms to prove to others the dangers of taking a trip on one. This trip could of turned out worse than it did. Thank god it didn't. I hope in the future you make the right choices in trusting any cruise line company. There best interest isn't your safety. There best interest is how many rooms they fill.

First of all, IMHO that's a helluva poor choice for the name of a ship.

Second: Is such flooding of the interior of the vessel expected during such stormy weather or was it the result of poor manufacturing at the shipyard?
Matt Ghormley

Bet that ship is full of rats I mean just rats by the hundreds or thousands
Renzu ZG
Renzu ZG - 6 years ago
During port visits quarantine officers inspect ships. If there's a single sign of rodents inside the ship gets quarantined, all crews taken out, and she ship is fumigated with a gas that will wipe out all life forms inside that ship for a couple of days. After that, it's ventilated and inspected for the dead rats collect it, and then given a clean bill of health.

In order to prevent inconveniences, we seafarers prepare certain deterrents like rat guards on mooring lines so those rodents won't be able to enter the ship in the first place.

Michelle Scott, no its not apart of carnival. I had a good time, they had massive amounts of food and entertainment, they had a kids zone. But it was just a weekend cruise to nowhere... Just for a quick getaway. The boat left the dock friday 6pm sharp, and returned sunday 8am. I love cruises because you really get your moneys worth. You have a place to sleep, unlimited food, unlimited entertainment and you get dropped off to spend time at an island or two.

Tiara Rivera ok. I didn't make any of the reservations. My cousin did. I guess I'll be able to learn more if I do it myself. So how was the one u took. Norwegian? That's not apart of carnival right??
Tiara Rivera
Tiara Rivera - 6 years ago
Michelle Scott, if you make the reservation for 4 people they will accommodate you. I took a weekend cruise with norwegian and four of us shared the cabin. There was a bunk bed, a twin bed. Under the twin bed there was another twin mattres on wheels you can pull out. I'm sure carnival has the same accommodations. As far as minors bunking without someone at least 21 years old, I highly doubt they would allow that.
Michelle Scott
Michelle Scott - 6 years ago
Tiara Rivera YES! CRAZY EXPENSIVE!! But I'm sure it's make wonderful memories. And that's the only thing I don't like about carnival. I think it can only be 3 to a room right?? And it has to be at least 1 person either 21 or older in each room is my understanding.
Tiara Rivera
Tiara Rivera - 6 years ago
Michelle Scott, I researched Disney cruise vs. Carnival on YouTube, and the woman who made the video did say, " you can take three trips on carnival cruise with a family of four, for the price of one trip on Disney cruise line for a family of four." Now I alway knew Disney was expensive, but I never realized it would be that expensive. But Disney world is great too.

Michelle Scott, No I didn't take any children with me. My teenage daughters don't like boat rides at all. But i did see lots of children of various ages on the cruise. They all appeared to have had a good time. Would you consider a Disney or Nickelodeon cruise for the boys?

aR Bemo i don't think you know how cruise ships work and look like. cruises are beautiful, and massive. i went on one over the spring for the first time; i was stunned. i even got lost in the ship, it took a while to find my room. they've got everything; it's like a moving hotel. you take stops in the cruise, and you can leave it to explore the city you're in. then the next day, the cruise moves to another destination and you explore that city. at one point, i didn't even want to leave the cruise; it was just too welcoming and made me want to stay.

to wrap it up, you are going to a location if you are in a cruise for several days. in fact, you're going to be in MANY locations

What a world we live in, people save up and plan for a vacation and spend the entire time with their faces firmly planted in their cell phones. Yes, this wasn't the greatest of experiences, but I know there are about 20 million people in sub-human conditions and actually starving to death that would happily take your place on a ship filled with food and a few waves.
