Chak Matay would rather sink than be a trawler...So sail her (Ep. 33 ~ Bums on a Boat)

We again attempt to leave Boot Key Harbor and of course things go wrong immediately. This time we just keep going. One thing after another tempts us to turn back and even call it quits but persistence pays off. We successfully sail from Marathon to Miami and overcome ongoing issues. Luke Baruch, the boys, Lucy and Julia save the day once we limp in and we are now in position to cross over to the Bahamas.

lol I love how you don't edit out the mistakes you make, that's what makes you my favorite sailors! There is always more to learn but, a simple checklist will make it easier for you before you leave safe harbor. I don't like to give advice it's just what I try to do to prevent disaster lol...paper charts & a compass worked for 100's of years for much less educated than you. Great video! keep em' coming you help me keep the dream alive brother! Until we meet...Adios......GRUNT

Buy a Yanmar Mon! That Volvo won't even make a suitable mooring! New engine, no worries.

Someone slipped you some bio diesel. Perfectly fine as long as it does not sit in the tank. It sits and bacteria & algae grow in the fuel. You have to get the fuel treatment truckers use to clean the fuel tank & fuel lines.
Bums on a Boat
Bums on a Boat - 6 years ago
Yea copy that. We did get some marine diesel treatment and plan to use it from here on out once we clean it the tank.

Joel, have you considered picking up an inexpensive GPS capable android tablet? You can load Navionics on it and use it as a back up GPS. I believe "A Sailboat Story" used their Ipad with Navionics exclusively while sailing the Bahamas. We bought an inexpensive 10.1 Fusion Android tablet for $99.00 on Amazon an loaded Navionics on it for a back up to our Raymarine chart plotter. We haven't needed it as a back up but it's nice to use in the cabin while at anchor to check out our next passage or anchorage. Another app that you might like is called "FindShip" it's an app that shows any ship in the world that is transmitting AIS, it's description, course and speed. It has a free trial version and we liked it so much we bought the paid version. It doesn't transmit your location but it's really useful to keep an eye on the traffic in the area. Down side is when you are out of cell service you won't get real time updates.
Bums on a Boat
Bums on a Boat - 6 years ago
Actually that is what got us through a tough part in the dark approaching Miami. Michal had an blackberry and she had the Navionics free trial. It didn't appear to work when we lost service. It would be worth buying BTC just to use that though. Thanks for the other recommendation. We will look into it.

The brown muck is algae. A little water/moisture gets into the diesel and algae loves to grow in it. You need a bottle of diesel algaecide and you will have to change the fuel filters a lot until you get it all out of the tank. Any fuel dock or marina will have it. This is pretty common.

Never a dull moment with you. I bet for once you would enjoy a dull moment on the boat. Get some spare filters ( about 5 ) and an impeller for the water pump, spare oil etc. Did you find where that piece of metal came from? Water outside boat , good. Water inside boat not what you really want. Make a checklist that you go through every time you make you move.
Bums on a Boat
Bums on a Boat - 6 years ago
Uncle Muir lol a dull moment...hmm yea that actually does sound nice. Okay we have 3 more filters but I'll grab more. That metal was a pin that reinforced the forward stay. Yes we could do without another moment like that. Water out not in. Checklist for sure.
David Smith
David Smith - 6 years ago
That filter and belt was horrible. Have you replace the oil filter, impeller, and other maintenance? I know you are a good mechanic from your past videos. What about a dedicated starting battery and house battery? Overall you are doing great!! Wish I was sailing to the Bahamas!!! Enjoy and keep posting.

Yes sir we have replaced the oil filter and impeller recently. Also we do have two battery banks. One to start the engine and the other for house. We have 4 12v wired in parallel.

You guys rock. Just seriously get Tow Boat US. NOT Sea Tow. Tow Boat US will come get you out to 75 miles. Get the gold unlimited plan, if you don't have it, get it now. No I'm not affiliated with them, but I own an old boat and they have saved my butt and at the same time saved me thousands of dollars. When I tried seatow... laughable by comparison. It really helps with peace of mind and real safety.

Bums on a Boat - 6 years ago
Wow that's not good. Yea the said the tow boat in our area has a 50 mile radius and anything outside would be at our expense. We have had great experiences with Tow Boat US in the past and yea it's worth that $200. Until now. No service here in the Bahamas.
Gypsy Tinker
Gypsy Tinker - 6 years ago
You sure that wasn't Sea Tow? SeaTow wouldn't come out just a couple miles to get us on a super calm day. We went down the east coast last year and had nothing but great service from Tow Boat US in like, 5 states, lol. We got towed maybe 9 or 10 times, believe it or not. Twice in one day! Gold Unlimited plan, was under 200 bucks I think.
Bums on a Boat
Bums on a Boat - 6 years ago
Thanks we actually have Tow Boat US and considered using it to get to Miami after the second day but we were out of range and the bill went through the roof. We decided to see how close we could get and call them worse case...and hey we made it on our own:)

Remember, when it comes to diesels, 90% of problems are a result of fuel issues. And old fuel tanks are full of shit...sediment, biological growth, etc...and when you go out to sea and start splashing around, that gets stirred up and winds up in your filter. You should carry lots of filters in your spares locker, and you should flush your fuel tank first chance you get. Fair winds.

Re: Fuel Filters There are 3 Sizes; 30 Micron, 10 Micron and 2 Micron. You would use a 10 Micron  as your primary filter in your fuel/water separator.  A 2 Micron is real tight and will clog quickly.  Keep on sailing!

Thanks Uncle Bob great to know. Helps me feel a little better that maybe gunk didn't get through the 2 micron into the engine.

100% it sat with a full tank of fuel for about a year after Cuba in extreme heat and moderately cold temperatures. The condensation definitely caused a lot of water to collect on the bottom and there may also be fungus growing. It's at the top of the list.

Brother,
You have a blowboat, forget the engine people crossed oceans for eons before internal combustion engines.
Stay safe, good cheer, and as Capt Ron said if its going to happen its going to happen out there.
THose that wait for everything to be perfect, never leave the dock and its always tomorrow.
Trust your sails, forget the engine, get a good oar and go.....
Bums on a Boat
Bums on a Boat - 6 years ago
Exactly and wow they were in another level. Marathon showed me the truth in that...many are waiting for hints to be perfect and most likely always will. Captain Ron knows.

OMG dude that was the worst fuel filter I ever saw, I can only image what has got passed it the filter and plugging things up in your motor. Seriously why not get a job while living on the boat and start replacing all of your worn out junk on the boat. Most of your stuff is worn out from many years of use or from no maintenance. Ask your buddy Stan the man what he would do with your motor before leaving sight of land on that boat of yours?
Bums on a Boat
Bums on a Boat - 6 years ago
Yes embarrassing for sure. Believe it or not I've worked many jobs during this process and spent it all on the boat. Our inexperience constantly catches up to us. That wasn't a lack of money or a job but knowledge. We learn through just going for it and messing up.

Joel, I have to give you credit. I'm not going to let you off the hook with those "user errors" that just didn't get done in the past two months, but when the crap hit the fan these past few days, you thought things thru and used common sense to make the best of whatever rotten situation popped up its ugly head. You've come a long way since "the three" of you made this trip the last time. Sometimes its just a lack of extra money that delays some routine maintenance, but you're getting better :) And... you not only take the advice of friends that post on here, but you're also smart enough to know when its time to drop anchor, and call in the calvary for help :) You've also been getting much better with the sails !! I wish I knew about the GPS issue because its probably fixable. Electronics just wear down with all the SALT, humidity, temp and exposure to water. Last ---- I feel a LOT better seeing you working out on deck wearing a harness and actually using the jack line. What's the chance of hooking up with someone else that is crossing at the same time, so you "guys" could be "Buddy Boats? Wishing you a safe and enjoyable trip to the Bahamas !!
Bums on a Boat
Bums on a Boat - 6 years ago
Bruce you have been there from day one. Call it like you see it my friend. Always failing always learning by wouldn't trade it for anything. Bahamas water is great for scraping lol just got her squeaky clean yesterday. Michal did most of it in Miami before we left.
Bums on a Boat
Bums on a Boat - 6 years ago
Yea Bruce trust me it wasn't a proud moment. The filter and the bottom job were just lack of motivation...being a BUM lol. And we have recently discovered that the alternator has never worked since we first purchased the boat...the solar we installed is all the power coming in. The gps is the first thing to go when the batteries drop. We did find a buddy boat and in fact have already crossed to Bimini. Tomorrow we should get the alternator back and then t will be a whole new ball game. Thanks for the encouragement. It isn't easy showing people how stupid you are haha. Hey just keep getting better eh.
