Cold Weather Sailing - We're Not in the Tropics Anymore! (MJ Sailing -Episode 93)

Getting into harsher conditions in the north isn't going to stop us from island hopping. We're still ready to make the 95 mile open water sail between Terceria and Sao Miguel. We'd been lucky to have many pleasure cruises between these islands in the summer and into fall, but now cold weather conditions are kicking it, and it's getting harder to find windows of calm seas and no winter storms. So when we find the first usable window to Sao Miguel, we take it. These colder temperatures have us completing a few other small projects, like finally inserting a plexi glass side into our door. Up until this point it had been a mesh screen, and things started getting a little too cold at night! But, since we came back to this island to explore...we rent a car for two more days to visit a few more places we had not seen, including the highly rated hike of Lagoa do Fogo. Much love from the Azores! Jessica, Matt & Georgie Thank you SO MUCH to our Patrons. These amazing supporters help keep us on the boat, our camera equipment up to date, and the videos coming. We would have set the drogue instead of dragging just fenders, but in my wisdom -before we left the Canary Islands, I took the drogue out and stored it in an easy to access location on the boat.... which I couldn't find when it was needed. It wasn't until we were safe in St. Martin that I found that I laid it under the mattress of the v-berth (for some reason). Lesson learned.

The Sailing reminds me of a summers day sailing the south west, West and North West Irish coast.
Nice Seas tad bit of rock an roll a bit of sun, wind and rain yes an Irish summers sailing.
I remember you saying in a previous episode that you maybe coming to Ireland if you do I would suggest getting a diesel air heater ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rE6B7vRlS6E ) as you may not have shore power in enough place's for your electric one.
Keep up the Good Work
As to the heating glad to hear you have it covered... I have a forced air heater on my own boat the German one not the Chinese... What can I say it was fitted when I bought the boat have since help an uncle fit the Chinese one on his boat and may actual prefer the controls on his one over my own. Plus the parts of mine cost nearly as much as his whole system cost...
I would advice you to have it fitted before setting sail to here, even an Irish summer can get a cold enough Night to need it sometimes hope you don't need it while you are here but have it installed just in case...
The normal time's I need it during the summer is when you've gone to the pub on a lovely sunny evenin and had Mother Nature Take a P*ss on you on the way back which normally means the wind picks up a small tad the evenin gets cool & You get soaked down to the unmentionables... So you get back to the boat needing a towel, heat and a warm cuppa. Or a tad wee bit of the strong stuff ;-)
Regarding heating...we've got two. One diesel drip Sigmar and a cheap Chinese diesel forced air. Neither are totally installed due to us still being in a mild climate.
The drip takes a lot of space in the cabin, so only gets put up once it is needed (takes an hour to get in place). The forced air still needs some holes cut for the ducting and I haven't decided exactly what direction to take around the cabin.
But, finishing the install is on the top of the list of things to do when we get back to the boat in a few weeks.

My wife and myself come from Denmark, and live on the south coast just outside Ponta Delgada (near Populo beach), and just like You, we fell in love with the islands and settled here for good 10 years ago. Strange, but this little island have so much to offer and You will experience later too ! - We follow You - and Thank You.

Was that aqueduct part of an irrigation system? How old, etc?
I like the pot with the removable handle. I need at least one. You do know that you can make a tomato based pasta sauce with raw ingredients e.g. tomatoes, garlic (lots), capers, anchovies? Not a criticism, just a friendly hint (and a bit of a tease :-)). You should taste the pizzas I make using packaged pizza sauce from the supermarket. Some years ago, we had a young, American doctor doing an exchange year. He explained to his parents that Australian supermarkets "don't have food. They just have ingredients." Well ... that was too tempting :-)

Wonderful episode Jessca. As I was working a couple of hours before you posted. I was lamenting how crazy and busy everyone is and the need for a slower life style.
Then I watch you both and it’s like everything slows way down. Thank you for what you bring to all of us each week...
Good Health to you both...
San Miguel is magical.Cant wait to visit.
