Odd. I would loose the jib entirely so the main pulls the stern around. Better still, you could drop everything but the mizzen if it where a ketch. Guess it all depends on what's on your port side. The reason this seems dumb to me is that he's "demonstrating" the most obvious course of action. Of course you can just turn the damn thing the other way. Show me how to force that tack when I have no other option and I'll be impressed.

The boat here is not heaved too - the jib is on the regular downwind side of the boat and yes it has happened to me and others with the main up as well. It happens only in very light wind conditions and when you have some one heavy handed at the helm who has turned the wheel all the way over which causes the boat to almost stop and have little headway. If the boat has headway then you can turn it but if it has lost it then you can get yourself in trouble.

No it wont. As long as a boat has headway, with a main up, it will go up wind. Especially modern day fin keeled boats. That boat could have easily tacked with a main. But you basically had the boat heaving too. An improvement to that lesson would be to mention that the problem occurs under headsail only. Something a lot of cruisers may expect to happen. But you presented it with the boat heaving too under headsail only.

HUH? of the boat didnt go up? It only had a jib up. Under main.. no problem. I find it difficult to really understand the lesson. Perhaps you needed to mention the main. But its bad advertising with something as obvious as that.

I used to do that alot on the Hobie 16 I learned to sail on.
