The formula A squared plus B squared equals C squared for a right triangle and a pair of binoculars while on the shore of a large lake is all anyone needs to understand what the curve of a 24,959 mile sphere should look like and test it. One can do this or remain ignorant it's your prerogative.

New battery and super capacitor technology will have been more than good enough and Yes I agree, covering the boat in solar panels isn't a solution which is why I'd personally utilise vertical axis magnetic bearing turbines so all concerns of corrosion on the bearing system can be forgotten.

Granted you also need wind for turbines but when they're charging your boat for near enough free minus the price of the unit and for people who aren't in a hurry and just want to travel almost continuous then definitely turbines and electric are a great step in the correct direction.

If you know any creative engineers then of course you could design detachable units that can be put in the sea with a water sock and if there's water flow then it will be charging.

I think people can work really well with electric with some good creativity, nothing on any boat should only have one use, I think when peoples creativity and eye for integration kicks in there will be all manner of very great points for switching to electric not just to get away from petrol or diesel.

Fuel is only going to increase in price, if you're on a SAIL BOAT think outside the box and think what else that free wind and water flow can be doing for you.

The water only stops flowing at slack tide and if you're anchored over reasonably shallow ground then the water flow will be even greater and believe me sea currents can get pretty powerful.

I can't wait until I can afford to buy and modify a sail boat myself, she will be converted to run electric only.

The only reason I'd leave a sail on it is to have the more stable hold over for sleeping on the move.

I really like your boat and seeing your journey with your dad across the pond, it's a shame you can't keep her but hopefully she's off to a new family that will love and cherish her.

Great video and all the best for your racing.

Hugo ??!

People can believe in a flat earth, but the power of their personal conviction doesn't validate nonsense. Facts are more valid than beliefs. For example, you can confidently say that flat earthers are fucking idiots, because that's a fact. Anyone who puts their personal conviction behind an unbelievably huge global conspiracy theory that achieves nothing is an idiot, that's not controversial to say.

It's within their personal ability to test the shape of our planet. Get on a boat and go east or west. The only thing left to doubt at that point is a compass. But if a person can believe the Earth is flat then they can believe anything, so why wouldn't compasses be just another tool in a vast pointless misinformation campaign?

I know a flat earther. Sure, she's a nice person. She's also a complete idiot who pulled her kids out of school to save them from being brainwashed by 'the state.'

Glass isn't a liquid, glass is an amorphous solid. It hasn't formed any crystals, so it's kinda like a liquid in that sense but it really is a solid.

If you do your own research it becomes obvious the earth is flat. No motion or curvature can be or has ever been detected. Observing Polaris for a week will also prove that it’s the stars moving, not us. Also try googling pictures of the earth from space, you’ll find they are all cgi and not one looks the same. Go to the beach and watch a boat disappear then take out your zoom camera and it comes back into view, proving it didn’t disappear beyond the curve. Why do you have to hold a compass flat for it to work? Watch this vid for more proof. https://youtu.be/nfLzBVvwcRA

I agree you, but glass doesn´t influence the enviroment chemical in any way as plastic does. Glas Bottles on the seabed look not very well but they are also spots were sesile animals can find a place to attach and little fishes and shrimp use it as hidding place. If you throw them in the water they do not float around they go straight down to the seabed and stay there and begin to be covered with sea life. I never heard a mamal or fish died, while eating a glass bottle. And of corse at home I am collecting all glass bottles for recycling+krispycreme98
krispycreme98
krispycreme98 - 5 years ago
Peter Fehringer Glass is made from sand, but it is in no way similar to how it was before humans process it. It would take years to break down and be an unnatural piece of rubbish on the seabed for creatures to navigate. It is not a particularly difficult material to recycle and is better to reuse these bottles etc as opposed to taking more sand to create more glass to put back in the ocean in an unnatural form. Cans are the same as glass, it doesn’t take much to recycle these materials and is far better environmentally to do so as opposed to extracting new raw materials from the earth. It’s not too difficult to find a recycling depot once in a while and is far better for our dying environment. Just my two cents ✌️

I have watched your video and ask that you think again about the rubbish you chuck over the side of your boat. It is not just about whether something will degrade or not and how long, but also about rubbish that chokes and kills sea life. You are right not chuck plastic over the side, but other materials could also have a detrimental affect on sea creatures that try to eat your discarded waste materials and unfortunately kill them. I would have thought all organic material is fine though.

Catamarans are not goodsailing in heavy seas and in strengthening winds can turn over if you have too much sail up. A monohull with a relatively heavy keel beneath the water does not have this problem.
Peter Fehringer
Peter Fehringer - 5 years ago
I sailed about 25000 Sm on a Monohull and now I own a catamaran same length, sailed it for about 5000 Sm, I would never change back to monohull. If you have to much sails in strong winds you are stupid on monohulls and on catamarans, rief when you think first about it. Catamarans don´t heel, much more space, faster from half wind to downwind. And your glas stands on the table were you put it all day long
Noah Rondou
Noah Rondou - 5 years ago
It's not that easy, some organic material can be way worse than glass or metal. But I agree, rather not toss anything overboard.

Hey there, about electric engines while there is wind blowing, I found these motorbike electric motors that are 8kw but at 48v 80A continuous they use about 3840w at 700rpm. With a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine that is 4m Wide x 4.2m High spinning at 40rpm in a 20nt or just over 23mph Wind with 952.428 Nm force which is plenty to drive section A vee belt pulleys 2 stage 40rpm 10" to 2.5" with 11" to 2.5" 704rpm to the motor's shaft it will produce 3,920 watts. That power is then fed into another motor which will spin at 700rpm & then using section A vee belt pulleys with a single stage mounted from the motor shaft 700rpm 12" to 2.5" pulley mounted to the propeller shaft giving 3360rpm. There would be some ingenuity needed to make a vertical spinning stainless steel tube sit on a 4 point frame with a sealed bearing for the spinning tube to rotate on plus a way to make the 3 horizontal C shaped wind turbine blades able to lock in at 120 degrees from each other & also unlock to rest all next to each other.

If you can work out a motor controller for 48v 80A such as maybe getting one for that motorcycle motor then the whole setup could be very cheap. The 3 blades can be made out of thick truck plastic cover sewn onto stainless steel tubing where the 3 blades could be mounted in a way where they can be unlocked from mast that they are on & tied up together when not in use. Each 96V Electric Bicycle Brushless Dc Electric Wheel Hub Motor 8000W cost $295 USD plus shipping.

If there is no wind then you could use a petrol generator with 48v charger to 4 car batteries to temporarily get the boat moving until you found wind to take over. This whole concept is to work with the sails so that you can go faster on the water perhaps up to 30nt's.

Surprised that you throw so much overboard, why not flatten the cans, and save the paper and glass? If you had room to store it when full, then flattened should take up less space no? Glass won’t implode if bottle is open, and if closed it is just floating along being pollution and an eyesore, just asking but I think you took the easy way out on flat earthers, why not stand up for science and the scientific method rather than kooks?

+Mike Hensen Even life will go on without us, even with all we can throw at it. It's just that we're killing ourselves, which is not so fine in my opinion :(. Metals and glass can hurt wildlife, but that is not "so" bad. The problem is that it can be recycled completely which is why you should not toss it in the wrong garbage bag.
Imagine spending a lot of energy making transparent glass and then instead of molding it into something new for cheap letting it become sand again and then spend a lot of energy to make it again.

Our planet dissolves everything and sea does it best - as for glass - have you found small transparent round 'stones' on sea shores? those are pieces of glass rounded and polished by sea - when the bottle gets to the bottom it will be moved (sometimes violently) against seabed, rocks, corals etc and eventually it will become small round stones and then friction will slowly turn it to sand... organics (and paper is wood) and metals will dissolve in saltwater very very fast... just look what is left of military armored ships sunk during WW2 - you can dive to them in many places - so all in all, forget the 'mighty human endangering nature' myth - in 50 to 100 years (which is a blink in terms of Earth the Planet) all human 'technologies' such as concrete, alloys, ceramics - all be reclaimed ) humans can in no way 'harm' the Planet...

David Christopher I agree in that the sailing community is tiny, compared to the crap put out by countries, it was more of a philosophical point, I’m afraid of the slippery slope towards throwing the wrong stuff overboard, but you’re right, it’s minuscule

You're a great one to answer questions of the inexperienced. Seems there's always new initiates for the life of sailing and the learning never ends.

Yes, the Q&A is great. It shows more of your personality and allows you to be honest about your opinions.
Your channel is interesting as we see you alone, with friends, and meeting new people. The sit down sessions are a great change of pace and you pick good questions.

What will come of the channel when you travel back for hurricane season? Do you have backlogs, or do you think there will be a break in the videos?
