Ep 10. Internet and Weather Maps for our Leopard 45 Catamaran | Sailing Sisu

We are preparing our Leopard 45 Catamaran to sail around the world. We want to visit off the beaten tack places and need to prepare for ice bergs, storms, heavy seas, as well as nice tranquil tropical waters...follow us as we discuss how to get Internet and weather maps on board to assist us in our adventures. We watch Delos and the Wynns for internet solutions, but could not remember if la vagabonde ever discussed this? Thank you for all our subscribers! Listened to your blog on internet / weather/ text, etc. connections and think you missed one , which is SSB radio. I got licensed in the United States so I could use this. Nice to be able to send a text or short email 5000miles. Thoughts.

I will add the SSB then to a very near future video ;-) petro allowed me one more tech video and then she wants to do some girlie vids :-)

thank you, Lk! we actually covered ssb, but then the video length would have been 20 minutes, so i cut it from the final clip...not sure if the viewers are ready for longer videos?

i wouldn't worry about it. its obvious to me that yours is the nav light sectors with your cat and silhouettes of you two. nothing like an old wooden wheel. its your channel. do what you like.

Sure - but the lesson here that that you need a logo, your own logo, not rip someone else's off. Be different and be original - that is the only way you will stand out from an ever increasing number os sailing vlog's positioning for our Patreon support

Electric boats are all held back by battery development. But that is changing. Imagine a battery you could build out of notebook paper, a couple pieces of plastic, and Robert Murray Smith's graphene ink (which you could make yourself).

Satellites are coming too. And the new, lighter, high performance carbon fiber cruising cats are also coming. But everything is about 5 years away.
Sailing Sisu
Sailing Sisu - 6 years ago
thank you, in the SSB part we cut out, we actually asked the question whether the new tech did not surpassed the SSB... i so want to go for electric, but i actually do not see any cruiser cats beyond 2015 using it? all the electric motor videos are very old?

there is a channel, Sail Life,, with a person called Mads, and his boat called Obelix, and he already tested a WiFi booster in the hardor area, and had lots of problems with it, you may want to look his channel up,

Hoisting a phone up the mast is a pretty odd solution, especially for Delos because the guy used to be a IT guy. A better solution is to get get an omni directional antennae, either individual ones or something like the Glomex IT2000 which takes a collection of antennas and bring them to a single N connector (there are many alternatives as exterior antennas are quite common for offices which can act as faraday cages). You then terminate that N or other connector at a booster and switch to individual 4G/LTE/3G and WiFi modem adapters. You can then swap prepaid cards as locally available. This will give you much better range than any phone antennae and makes swapping out devices very simple. Pricing would range from $80-$400 for the antennae and cable, with multi-mode modems like the Huawei E5776 ranging from $70 - $200.

you are absolutely correct and myself have 5 degrees in electronics and IT, but you have to admit....cellphones are designed for just that ;-) line of sight is basically the limit of these high frequency signals so, it does not matter how good the signal booster is, granted, a good gain antenna will boost a weak signal 100% and i agree fully with your statement so, don't get me wrong here :-) there were many times that I threw my super koowl iphone out of frustration with bad connections and a proper setup will avoid this absolutely...but it is still koowl to hoist a $50 phone up :-D

I am planning on living on a boat that is full of tech. I am very happy to follow another person (you) who is not only tech savy but not locked into the past. Great video and I am looking forward to following all your videos. My boat will also need high speed internet. I am very happy I stumbled across your channel.

I'm looking for the same as you. And I had the same problems with frequency. I found a solution that looks interesting, but I did not find someone who used it.

What's the origin of the phrase 'Standing on the shoulders of giants'?
The best-known use of this phrase was by Isaac Newton in a letter to his rival Robert Hooke, in 1676:

"What Descartes did was a good step. You have added much several ways, and especially in taking the colours of thin plates into philosophical consideration. If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants."

Standing on the shoulders of giantsNewton didn't originate it though. The 12th century theologian and author John of Salisbury used a version of the phrase in a treatise on logic called Metalogicon, written in Latin in 1159. Translations of this difficult book are quite variable but the gist of what Salisbury said is:

"We are like dwarfs sitting on the shoulders of giants. We see more, and things that are more distant, than they did, not because our sight is superior or because we are taller than they, but because they raise us up, and by their great stature add to ours."

The phrase may even pre-date John of Salisbury, who was known to have adapted and refined the work of others.

If you’re going to go for any type of 4G LTE system, I’d go for something like the Hubba X-4-Duo, it can handle pretty much every areas SIM card you’ll ever need, it can take 2 SIMs so you’ll have double the speed, it can use onshore WiFi as long as you have the password, and importantly it is VPN configurable.

https://www.buzzconnect.co.uk/hubba/

Apart from that, until SpaceX launches its satellites, or Iridium NEXT comes online, it’s going to be between 3 to 5 years before we have blazing fast, very cheap worldwide satellite internet.

As for the weather, I’d stick with the Iridium satellite portable system you mentioned at the start, others use this and it seems to be one of the best, there is also the Garmin system that is great for messaging, and predict wind gets my vote for weather provider.
